Dear Parishioners,

The Church celebrates the Holy Family this weekend. For several people, the model of a Holy Family seems an unrealistic model. Too many had or are living a childhood that is disjointed. Some people experience addictions within their family, or the challenges of poverty, maybe some mental illness, a chronic disease. The list can be long, and society and we wonder what can we do?

Jesus as God in human form because of the love to God the Father. What we are called to do is to love as best we can. I am aware of many people who overcame a difficult childhood because someone cared and showed them how to love and forgive. Throughout history there have been examples of people growing up unloved yet learning to God’s love and mercy. No age of humanity has been perfect, neglect and abuse has always occurred.

Imitate the Holy Family in the love you show to others even if it doesn’t get returned.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year for all.

God Bless,

Fr. Dave Why do Catholics honor Mary as Mother of God?

Simple: Jesus is the son of Mary. Jesus is God. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of

God. On this holy feast day, we take a moment as we start our new year to honor

our Blessed Mother, who in her “yes” to God brought our Savior into the world to

redeem us.

Lost & Found Tip: Jesus says on the cross, “Behold your Mother.” As we all jump

into the frenzy of the new year and start attempting to bring our resolutions to

fruition, let us call on the aid of our Mother Mary to give us the strength to draw

closer to her Son every day this year. Catholics Come Home, Inc

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection: December 29, 2019 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph

Sir. 3:2-6, 12-14; Ps. 128; Col. 3:12-17; Mt. 2:13-15; 19-23

Today, as we continue celebrating the Christmas

season, we focus our attention on the Holy Family.

This is a great time to thank God for the gift of family

life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church refers to

the family as the “domestic church,” so today’s feast

is a fitting time to consider the importance of the

virtue of the stewardship pillar of hospitality within

the context of our own domestic churches.

Why is hospitality so important? Well, we can hardly

expect our family members to pray together, study

their faith, and serve others if we have a home where

we are disconnected from each other, or the

atmosphere is stressful and tense. Of course there will

be moments like this. But we must be intentional in creating homes where

everyone feels accepted and important. We want our homes to be the place to get

recharged to go out and bring love to everyone we encounter outside our home.

This is not easy, but we can turn to the Holy Family for help. Lest we think that

the Holy Family is somehow unable to sympathize with our struggles, we see in

our Gospel passage from Matthew that this Family was certainly not free from

trials and stress; quite the contrary. The very life of the newborn Jesus was

threatened by Herod’s extreme jealousy such that the family had to flee suddenly

into a foreign land for protection until Herod’s death. Yet Mary and Joseph

remained united and ever obedient to the Holy Spirit for direction. Who better to

turn to for help and inspiration for our own families?

Please keep the following Parishioners in your prayers :

IN GIVING WE RECEIVE

In the Welcome Center, we see the life-changing

impact generosity has on the lives of our clients. In

gratitude for what they receive, many clients give

back to the agency with the time, talent, and

treasure they gain through our services, thereby creating a continuous cycle of generous giving. In this season of giving, we boldly ask you to

consider becoming a monthly donor to Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Just $50 per month provides food for a family who didn’t

otherwise know where their next meal was coming from. Your gift, no matter the amount, quite literally saves lives. To become a monthly donor

please contact Lynn Lichte, Donor Stewardship Specialist at 816-659-8243 or [email protected].

CCW Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign

In support of the Anti-Human Trafficing Campaign St. Bernadette’s CCW and Our Lady of Lourdes are asking all parishioners to wear blue on January 4 & 5th.

Josephine Margaret Bakhita, F.D.C.C., (ca. 1869 – 8 February 1947) was a Sudanese-Italian Canossian religious sister active in Italy for 45 years, after having been in a slave in Sudan.

She was born around 1869 in Darfur (now in western Sudan) in the village of Olgossa. Her respected and reasonably prosperous father was brother of the village chief. She was surrounded by a loving family of three brothers and three sisters.

Sometime between the age of seven to nine, probably in February 1877, she was seized by Arab slave traders, who had abducted her elder sister two years earlier. She was forced to walk barefoot about 960 kilometres (600 mi) to El Obeid and was sold and bought twice before she arrived there. Over the course of twelve years (1877–1889) she was sold three more times and then given away.

Bakhita was not the name she received from her parents at birth. It is said that the trauma of her abduction caused her to forget her own name; she took one given to her by the slavers, bakhita, Arabic for "lucky" or "fortunate".

In 2000 she was declared a saint by the Catholic Church.

Quotes of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Feast Day: January 4

“Cheerfulness prepares a glorious mind for all the noblest acts.”

“‘Thy will be done’—What a comfort and support those four little words are to my soul. I have repeated them until they are softened to the sweetest harmony.”

“Penance is the purifier of the soul.”

“Be attentive to the voice of grace.”

“If you are to do His work, the strength will be given you.”

“Disorder in the society is the result of disorder in the family.”

“We know certainly that our God calls us to a holy life. We know that He gives us every grace, every abundant grace; and though we are so weak of ourselves, this grace is able to carry us through every obstacle and difficulty.”

“Oh my God, forgive what I have been, correct what I am, and direct what I shall be.”

“The love of talk distracts all the powers of our soul from God, and fills them with earthly objects and impressions, like a vessel of water that cannot be settled while you are continually stirring the earthly particles from the bottom.”

“Does the life of our Jesus animate us? Do we indeed give Him the true service of the heart without which whatever else we give has no value?”

“Our Lord Himself I saw in this venerable Sacrament...I felt as if my chains fell, as those of St. Peter at the touch of the Divine messenger. My God, what new scenes for my soul!”

“Jesus is as a fire in the very center of our souls ever burning. Yet, we are cold because we do not stay by it.”

“Be but faithful to Him with your whole heart, and never fear. He will support, direct, console, and finally crown your dearest hope.”

“Faith lifts the staggering soul on one side, Hope supports it on the other. Experience says it must be, and Love says let it be.”

“The accidents of life separate us from our dearest friends, but let us not despair. God is like a looking glass in which souls see each other. The more we are united to Him by love, the nearer we are to those who belong to Him.”

“Take every day as a ring which you must engrave, adorn, and embellish with your actions, to be offered up in the evening at the altar of God.”

“How sweet, the presence of Jesus to the longing, harassed soul! It is instant peace, and balm to every wound.”

“In every disappointment, let your heart fly directly to your dear Savior. Jesus will never leave you or forsake you.”

“My own troubles will teach me I hope how to comfort others.”

“I will go peaceably and firmly to the Catholic Church: for if Faith is so important to our salvation, I will seek it where true Faith began, seek it among those who received it from God Himself.”

“God is everywhere...but in His Sacrament of the Altar He is as present actually and really as my soul within my body; in His Sacrifice daily offered as really as once offered on the Cross.”

“Afflictions are the steps to heaven.”

“O Jesus, sure joy of my soul, give me but a true love of You. Let me seek You as my only good.”

Thank you to all those that ordered Poinsettias to beautify our sanctuary.

They will be available to take home after the Feast of the Epiphany.

GABRIEL PROJECT~ Use your talents and gifts to help women facing crisis pregnancies. As we work to lay the foundation for this ministry in our diocese, we hope to find volunteers in many areas: parish support to help mothers with specific needs such as car seats, diapers, formula, baby cribs, etc.; professional services (legal, medical, dental, counseling); resume assistance; fundraising…and more. If you would like to lend your support, please contact Teresa Hoeppner at 816.714.2375 or

Trusted Servants Dues are due. In January membership dues of $15.00 are due to the Trusted Servants. All adult parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish are members. You may put your dues payment in the Trusted Servants pink envelope but please mark it clearly as your annual dues payment. Please consider supporting your Trusted Servants with your dues payment. Thank you. The next regular luncheon/meeting of the Trusted Servants will be Wednesday January 8th, 2020 at 12:00pm. If there is inclement weather the meeting will be cancelled and not rescheduled. Parking: As Wednesday's are an early out day for the Three Trails preschool access to the parking lot may be difficult at 12:00pm. However, the northwest driveway on Blue Ridge is available for only parishioners to use at that time. If chained, the chain maybe lowered to drive in. Mr. Sharkey is stationed there to help with access.

Need to receive Anointing of the Sick? If you suffer from a chronic illness, the affect of advanced years or have an upcoming surgery and wish to receive this sacrament contact the parish office at 816-353-2380 to schedule it in advance or make an appointment for a weekday.
