Tourist pedestrian signage
Kortrijk needs new pedestrian signage as a result of its
dynamic evolution and urban development. The objective is
to welcome tourists in a trendy fashion and provide clear and
unambiguous signage to places of interest. We show them
the best Kortrijk has to off er on the way to their destination.
Many attractions are within walking distance in Kortrijk, which
off ers a great advantage, but sometimes places of interest are
hidden or are diffi cult to fi nd. Therefore the city centre will be
divided into 5 districts:
• Historic centre
• Buda Island
• Shopping area
• Leie riverbanks
• Music and theatre district
Each district will be allocated its own colour and symbol.
This is how the posts will look:
• The top of the post will feature the colour, name and
symbol of the district in which you are located.
• Underneath you will see arrows that direct you to a
diff erent district. The arrows depict the colour, name and
symbol of the district they direct you too. They will also
indicate the average number of minutes needed to walk
to that particular district.
• Underneath you will see the arrows that direct you to the
places of interest in the district in which you are located.
• The Grote Markt and Tourism Kortrijk appear on each post.
• Major places of interest will also have an information
board providing more details about the building or
function.
The signage will be erected before the summer.
The above plan already shows the diff erent districts with
their corresponding colours.

01 Broel Towers
These medieval towers,
together with the Artillery
Tower, are all that remains of
the city’s old fortifi cations.
The southern ‘Speytorre’
was constructed in 1385 to
control traffi c on the Leie.
The northerly ‘Inghel-
burghtorre’, dating back
to 1415, served as a
weapons depot. The Towers
are part of the distinctive
Kortrijk city silhouette.
02 The Grote Markt, the Belfry
and the City Hall
The Grote Markt in Kortrijk has
something to suit every taste.
Right in the middle of the square
is the Belfry (UNESCO World
Heritage Site), a remnant of
the medieval cloth hall. At the
top are the famous bell strikers
Manten and Kalle, and the spire
houses the 48-bell carillon.
The Grote Markt also features
the City Hall, in late Gothic
Renaissance style. The façade
features statues of the Counts of
Flanders. Inside, you will discover
the splendid aldermen’s hall and
council chamber with sculpted
mantelpieces. The Gothic hall
houses a modern mural on the
Battle of the Golden Spurs by
Jan van Imschoot.
03 The Béguinage site with the experience centre, the Artillery Tower, the Church of Our Lady and the Saint-Martin’s Church
The Kortrijk Saint Elisabeth Béguinage, founded in 1238, is a city
within a city, an oasis of peace and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
You can stroll past the small houses, the Gothic Saint Matthew’s
Chapel, with the oldest organ in the Low Countries, and the house
of the ‘Grand Dame’.
In the brand new Experience Centre in the Saint Anna Room
you will be immersed in many centuries of history in a remark-
ably dynamic manner. The Béguinage was inhabited by strong,
independent women, who were not bigots but feminists before
the term was even invented. Three ladies with character, all once
elected as the ‘Grand Dame’, whisk you off and provide you with
a glimpse into their world. You discover the elements of their
daily life, you see the Béguinage evolve and you can admire the
Béguinage’s treasures. An audio guide for use during your visit to
the Béguinage and the experience centre can be obtained from
the Visitor Centre, located just outside the gate.
The Artillery Tower is one of the few remains of the city’s medieval
fortress. This tower dates back
to the 14th century and was
originally used as a tower for
drinking water.
The fi rst bricks in the Church of Our Lady’s long history were laid
in the 13th century. In 1370, Count Lodewijk van Maele had the
Count’s Chapel built as his personal mausoleum. You will also fi nd
a touch screen there that provides more details about the history
of the chapel, the stunning wall paintings of the Counts of Flanders
and the statue of Saint Catherine (a recognised masterpiece!).
Today the church contains a number of important treasures such
as ‘The Erection of the
Cross’ by Anthony Van
Dijck.
The Saint-Martin’s
Church dates back to
the 12th century and
has been repeatedly
rebuilt and restored
over the centuries.
Inside you can fi nd
precious works of art.
The church tower
houses Kortrijk’s fi rst full
19th century carillon.
04 The Battle of the Golden Spurs
Kortrijk 1302 tells the tale of the most signifi cant battle in the history of Kortrijk, the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, in which an army of Flemish peasants defeated a force of heavily armed French cavalry. A little further, on the Groeningekouter, you
will fi nd the Groeninge Monument
where you can admire the statue of the Virgin of Flanders. She is trying to restrain the Flemish Lion, which has broken free of its
shackles. The Groeninge Gate, from 1908, which bears the inscription “1302 - Groeningheveld”, leads onto ‘t Plein, formerly the training ground of the 17th century military.
05 ‘Metamorphosis of the city’ city walk
The new city walk doesn’t just take you past the city’s historical
centre but also pays tribute to the metamorphosis that Kortrijk is
currently undergoing. There is a handy map including a brief
description of all the places of interest you encounter along the
way. You can download an audio version of the walk for your
smartphone from www.toerismekortrijk.be. It reveals some
interesting facts and amusing anecdotes. The route is indicated
by rivets on the ground.
06 Texture / Museum of Flax and river Lys
TEXTURE tells the story of the fl ax and linen industry. A story about
strong roots, about craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, about
daring innovations and constantly re-inventing oneself. In three
rooms, in an authentic fl ax depot (1912) on the banks of the river
Lys, you can learn about the
revolutionary development
created by the fl ax industry
in this region. The past will
surprise you, while the stories
of the present, will amaze and
inspire you. For centuries,
Flanders has been famous
for its textiles. A new industry
sprung up along the banks
of the Lys and went on to
conquer the world: fl ax
processing. ‘Courtrai fl ax’ soon
became renowned as the
best fl ax obtainable and still is
eagerly sought internationally.
Three rooms,
three stories
You use fl ax every
day, probably without
knowing it and at places
you would not expect it.
Designers, scientists
and entrepreneurs
leave no part of it unused. Discover, try, feel and test it all in
The cabinet of Curiosities. The Leie room brings to life the story
of fl ax processing in the Leie region. This story is one of mixed for-
tunes, of people who without outside assistance repeatedly found
the resilience to overcome major crises. It’s a fascinating history
with thinkers, darers and doers in the leading role. Beneath the
golden crown you will fi nd the Treasure chamber. This is the place
to marvel at the beautiful damasks, laces, handwork and fi ne fabrics
07 ’Occupied Kortrijk between 1914 and 1918’
You can visit the ‘On
the Trail of a Spy’
exhibition in a wing
of the Kortrijk 1302
Museum. What hap-
pened in Kortrijk during
World War I? Located
within a single day’s
march from the front,
our city was an impor-
tant point of supply for
the German troops. The
city was in the grip of regulations, requisitions and
billeting. Fighter pilots and bombers made the skies unsafe.
Privileged and less privileged citizens tell their stories. And a spy lurks
around every corner. You can also follow the WWI trail. You cycle
or walk past places that played a special role in The Great War. The
soldiers’ club (Soldatenheim), the pigeon prison, where confi scated
racing pigeons were locked up to prevent them from being used for
spying, an airfi eld complete with its bunker, the prisoner of war cells
that were secretly bugged... And you can use your tablet or
smartphone to play the exciting City Game about espionage.
23 May - 25 September
08 ’ K in Kortrijk’ and the shopping streets
‘K in Kortrijk’ is the new and prestigious 34,000-m² shopping centre.
The complex puts Kortrijk back on the map as a pleasant shopping
town. K in Kortrijk sits alongside the city’s shopping streets. Here
you can fi nd every kind of shop imaginable, from major chains to
unique boutiques. In short, shopping in Kortrijk has something for
everyone!
09 Buda Island
Buda Island lies between the arms of the river Leie, off ering
plenty for artistically-minded visitors to the city. This district of
Kortrijk includes such
distractions as the Buda
Tower; a platform for
artists of all sorts to do
what they do best. The
Budascoop cinema off ers
the chance to enjoy the
best non-commercial fi lms
and Broel 6 off ers a varied
exhibition programme of
contemporary visual arts. In
the summer of 2015 it will
display the FLUX art trail.
In the Budapark, people of all
ages can relax in the beautiful
setting of the Leie river. In the
summer, the Buda park turns
into a beach with a sunbath-
ing area. The Buda Factory
is an impressive venue where
designers, entrepreneurs,
artists, students and active
citizens work side-by-side. The
architectural fi rm of the Flemish
Government Architect Peter
Swinnen took charge of the old
building. A pentagonal section
was added along the streetside
to make the building’s façade more visible. The building’s 3,000
m² provides space for exhibitions, workshops and studios. There
is a prototype lab with 3D printers, laser cutters and lots of other
machines for creative people.
10 The banks of the Leie and ‘De Grote Verleieding’
De Grote Verleieding (the
big temptation), cele-
brations in Kortrijk and
throughout the region
following 20 years of works
on the Leie. The extensive
works have given Kortrijk
a facelift and the city now
boasts a widened Leie,
seven new bridges and
riverbanks with spacious
paths, delightful parks and
a renewed relationship with the water.
The seven newly designed bridges aim to further reinforce the
city’s own individual character. Each bridge is unique and can be
used to get one’s bearings. They are all suspended seven meters
above the surface of the water. The Westelijke Ringbridge, the
Dambridge, the Groeningebridge, the Collegebridge, the Noord-
bridge and the Budabridge have been completed while the Reep-
bridge is still in the design phase. Time for a celebratory project.
The Leie is the main artery of the Belgian art scene: literature,
architecture and painting. In this context the FLUX art trail unites
contemporary artists with amazing installations, intriguing photo-
graphs and new paintings. The artistic journey of discovery starts
on 4 July in Broel 6 and takes you past special places along the Leie.
De Grote Verleieding also focuses on the Leie’s numerous meta-
morphoses in Kortrijk and
the region.
Metamorfosen XL off ers
residents and visitors an
insight into the historic
and future developments
in the Leie region: urban
development, green spaces,
industry and reconversion
and recreation etc.
