Current Studio Project, Fall 2011

Drawings: AutoCADRenderings: Rhino and V-RayGraphics: Adobe Photoshop

Sited in the historical Downtown Galt area of Cambridge, Ontario, is this modest yet elegant hotel and spa.

The indoor pool is embeded in lower spa level. Its glass enclosure rises up above the central courtyard space acting as a glowing focal point at night.

1 Lightwell Block

Design Studio, Winter 2011

Drawings: Ink on mylarModels: Basswood, millboard, and foam

Lightwells and glass floors channel sunlight deep into the lower levels of the archive. Sunlight from the north enters the workshop, while diffuse sunlight from the south is funneled into the lower exhibtion space and atrium. Stairwells are lightfilled spaces.

Orthagonal planes are irregularly placed, thus creating interesting moments and views throughout the archive. Walls are monolithic, but streamlined.

Design Studio, Fall 2010

Model: BasswoodDrawings: Graphite on vellum

Program: A writer’s residence

Circular floor plan and fully glazed facade provide 360 degree views of the valley, creek and forest marsh setting. Occupants control floor to ceiling blinds on tracks that provide shade and privacy when and where desired. Operable windows provided ventilation and can transform space into an outdoor living area.

This suspended viewing platform design is inspired by the beauty and structural efficiency of the dragonfly wing. The seemingly flat surface of the dragonfly wing is actually strengthened through curvature and a high level of corrugation. Furthermore, the delicate form of a dragonfly wing fittingly suggests lift and flight. Extending 10 m out from the cliff side, the boomerang-shaped deck provides breathtaking panoramas of Helmcken falls.

Honeycomb Chair

ECUAD, Exploration of 3D Design, Spring 2009

Model: Corrugated cardboardDrawings: AutcCAD

This chair design mimics an architectural structure with its robust columnar base and frieze across the backrest. The double hexagon link design is modular so that the number of hexagons can be extended to accommodate larger seating arrangements if needed.

Structural Lace CladdingECUAD, Basics of Architectural Design, Summer 2009

Model: Luffa

The fibrous network of the luffa’s vascular xylem, which is strong and lightweight when dry, serves as the foundation of this structural fabric and cladding design. These clothing designs celebrate organic material and suggest a lifestyle that is “at one” with nature.
