HISTORY

Wadesboro was established as Anson's county seat in 1783 byColonel Thomas Wade and hisbrother-in-law, Captain PatrickBoggan, who offered the land.Streets were laid off and namedfor Revolutionary War notables:Generals George Washington,Nathaniel Greene, Daniel Morgan,and Grifth Rutherford; ColonelsThomas Wade and WilliamWashington; and GovernorsRichard Caswell and Alexander Martin. The town was rst calledNew Town, later changed toWadesborough.

In 1894, George Little, later joinedby his brother, Henry Wall Little,

opened a store on South GreeneStreet. The hardware store, H.W.Little and Co., is still owned andoperated by the Little family. Prior to the Great Depression, the storewas the marketing center for cotton, Anson County's main crop,and kept track of world pricesat the New York Cotton Marketthrough Western Union deliveringa market bulletin every 15 minutes.
