Australian Bush Fires
A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales in Australia as firefighters continue to
battle bush fires. Two hundred homes have been destroyed so far. Weather conditions are expected
to deteriorate with high temperatures and strong winds forecast in the coming days.
Here amid the smoky haze of the bush, the heat hits the senses. Temperatures are back in the mid-
30s making the work of firefighters increasingly difficult. Helicopters are buzzing overhead, dumping
water on the nearby fire fronts. They’re trying to stop several fires from merging into one huge blaze
spanning hundreds of kilometres.
In several communities, people are being warned not to try and stay to defend their homes. With
hundreds of houses already destroyed, disaster welfare centres have been set up where families can
start the planning needed to rebuild their lives. Most of the firefighters are volunteers. Many look
exhausted; some have even lost their own homes.
The fires follow unseasonably hot weather; conditions are expected to worsen throughout the week
with dangerously strong winds forecast on Wednesday and little drop in the temperature.

‘Blue Planet’
My name is Christopher, I am fourteen years ol an I have Asperger’s. I go to school in
Swindon, England.
When I got home from school that day Father was still at work, so I unlocked the front door
and went inside and took my coat off. I went into the kitchen and put my things on the table. And
one of the things was this book which I had taken into school to show to Siobhan. I made myself a
raspberry milkshake and heated it up in the microwave and then went through to the living room to
watch one of my Blue Planet videos about life in the deepest parts of the ocean.
The video was about sea creatures that live around sulphur chimneys, which are underwater
volcanoes where gases are ejecte from the earth’s crust into the water. Scientists never expecte
there to be any living organisms there because it was so hot and so poisonous, but there are wholeecosystems there.
I like this bit because it shows you that there is always something new that science can
discover, and all the facts that you take for granted can be completely wrong. And also I like the fact
that they are filming in a place which is harder to get to than the top of Mount Everest but is only a
few miles away from sea-level. And it is one of the quietest and darkest and most secret places on
the surface of the earth. And I like imagining that I am there sometimes, in a spherical metal
submarine with windows that are 30 cm thick to stop them imploding under pressure. And I imagine
that I am the only person inside it, and that it is not connected to a ship at all, but it can operate
under its own power and I can control the motors and move anywhere I want to on the sea bed and I
can never be found.Adapted from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
