Somnius, het subkamp dat als derde aan de beurt kwam bij Create2Impress, heeft gisteren de lat hoog gelegd voor Magnatio. Eveline (IST), die de activiteit begeleidt, was onder de indruk van de blauwe tribune. “Lundea maakte de beste sketch, maar Somnius heeft een prachtige tafel gesjord. Het wordt moeilijk om dit te overtreffen.”

Onder een levensecht portret van hun superheld, zochten de Somniuzanen verfrissing. Er werd met water gegooid, tot de blauwe superheld arriveerde voor de inspectie. In de blakende zon keurde Somnius de resultaten. Vooral met het vervoersmiddel was hij erg tevreden: “Ik heb nog nooit zo goed geslapen.”

Dat Somnius in het creatieve klassement nu aan kop staat, wordt bevestigd door Clodagh en Siofra (Ierland). “Kijk naar de andere tribunes en dan naar die van ons. We hebben echt een prachtige tafel gesjord, met al onze vlaggen eraan. Ook op ons subkamp zelf staan er supercoole constructies. Elke groep heeft echt zijn best gedaan.” Somnius velde uiteindelijk zijn oordeel: de kleurrijke decoratie en het mobiele bed waren niet te overtreffen. Good luck, Magnatio…

De Nederlandse Somniuzanen schreven een lied voor hun superheld, als een van de opdrachten.

• Joris is considering to shave his head. His hairdresser did a poor job. Please don’t make fun of him.

Avant d’aller dormir, y-a-t’il un rite?

Lander (België)“Meestal zingen wij aan het kampvuur ons avondlied. ‘O Heer, d’avond is neergekomen. De zonne zonk…’ En tijdens het liedje moet je knielen, maar we staan recht in een cirkel, met onze armen voor de borst. Nadien gaan we slapen. Tenzij het verkennersbar is, dan mogen we iets drinken en koekskes nemen. We zitten dan nog even bij elkaar en nadien gaan we slapen.”

Ryan (England)“The flag break. At night, before we go to bed, we take the flag down. We have to salute in a circle, towards the flag.. A leader shouts this the troop salute and the flag comes down. Then we can dismiss but we have to keep quiet. We go to our tents and we sleep because otherwise we pay the next morning.”

I promise…

The Scout Promise is different in all of our countries. Some of the participants will even make their Promise at JamBe 2013. Bruno, Becci, Jarno and François talk about their Promise.

Bruno, 14, Cadiz, Spain“Dans mon groupe, tu peux faire ta Promesse quand tu t’y sens prêt, à partir de 14 ans (en tant que pionnier). Il suffit de le dire à tes animateurs, qui réunissent alors les scouts qui ont déjà fait leur Promesse et les scouts qui désirent la faire pour discuter des Promesses passées et à venir.

Lors de la cérémonie de Promesse, le promettant reçoit un nouveau foulard d’un parrain qu’il a choisi. Le nouveau foulard est différent du précédent, et distingue ainsi les scouts qui ont fait leurs Promesse des autres. Il n’y a pas d’insigne de Promesse dans mon groupe.

Lorsqu’un scout a fait sa Promesse, il se fait appeler d’un nom d’animal (totem), à condition qu’il ait déjà trouvé un nom de totem qui lui corresponde. Sinon, il peut le trouver plus tard. A peu de choses près, tous les scouts qui ont leur Promesse ont donc également un totem. Je crois qu’il y a une ou deux personnes de mon groupe qui veulent faire leur Promesse ici à JamBe.”

Becci, 17, UK“In our group, we renew our Promise in each branch. When we’re brownies (7-11), guides (11-15) and rangers (16-25). With the rangers, I chose to be a brownie leader. That’s where I renewed my Promise.

The brownie Promise has recently changed to « I promise that I will do my best: to be true to myself and develop

my beliefs, to serve the Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the (Brownie) Guide law ».When you take The Promise you reinforce your dedication to being a guide and you say that you want to set and reach personal goals. It’s all about being the best you can be.

Jarno, 14, België “Ik heb mijn belofte bij de welpen gedaan (8-10) en bij de jonggivers (11-14). Je belofte doen betekent dat je de waarden van scouting hoog in het vaandel draagt, zoals respect, vriendschap en broederschap. Ook proberen we te werken aan onze minder goede eigenschappen.”

François, 15, France“Je me prépare à faire ma Promesse Pionniers (15-17 ans), ici à JamBe 2013. Je ne sais pas encore bien ce que les animateurs

ont prévu, mais j’ai déjà eu du temps pour le préparer. D’habitude, en France, on a une journée pour le faire -ça s’appelle une Première Source-, mais ici c’est un peu plus difficile, compte tenu de notre horaire chargé d’activités. J’ai déjà fait mes promesses dans les étapes précédentes de mon parcours scout, et c’est donc tout naturellement que j’en viens à faire celle-ci. Mon

animatrice et moi avons déjà repéré un endroit où nous aimerions faire la cérémonie de la Promesse. Je crois qu’il y a bien 8 ou 9 scouts de mon groupe de 17 qui prévoient de faire leur Promesse ici !”

Sub camp life: teamwork

Yesterday was the first day of August and everyone has gotten used to life at JamBe 2013. By now, the first impressions are behind us, and now it is all about meeting new people. Some groups, however, have decided to take it to the next level. Instead of just making friends, they decided to work and live together! We made a quick tour to look for buddy groups.

At Lundea, we met up with the girl guides of East Sussex and those of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. They have been eating and cooking together since the start of the JamBe. Algee (Saint Vincent) explains: “Our arrival was stressful! We arrived late and didn’t have any food or cooking equipment. The guides spontaneously helped us set up our tent and were happy to share their food. A Belgian group helped us pioneer our table.” The British guides were very enthusiastic as well and look forward to the rest of the camp with their new friends.

Enkele dagen voor de start van JamBe 2013, arriveerden 4 Oekraïense gidsen iets vroeger dan verwacht. Ze bezochten België en kwamen nadien terecht op Chronos, waar ze geadopteerd werden door een groep uit Oost-Eeklo. Robin vertelt ons wat er gebeurde: “Onze subkampstaf vroeg of we het goed vonden om onze spullen te delen. De Oekraïense meisjes hadden namelijk enkel een tent bij. Omdat we een kleine groep

zijn, vonden we het geen probleem. Alles verloopt goed tot nu toe.” Tanya (Oekraïne) is heel positief over haar buren. “Ze hebben ons goed geholpen. Natuurlijk is het niet gemakkelijk om te communiceren. Ik ben de enige die Engels spreekt, maar we geraken er wel.”

Also at Chronos, the Dutch scouts from Scouting Mondriaan share their space and a lot of their camping equipment with scouts from Denmark. Although they didn’t know each other at the start of JamBe 2013, they have been spending a lot of time together. “It’s great to be together on one camping place with these Dutch scouts,” says one Danish scout. “They are well prepared and were kind enough to share their equipment with us.” The Dutch scouts are enthusiastic as well: “This is a great way to learn even more about a different culture, and that’s what it’s all about.”

À Magnatio, il y a un collaboration entre des scouts catalans et des scouts belges. Les deux petits groupes vivent ensemble avec plaisir, mais la communication est difficile. « Le Catalan et le Français ont des similarités », nous explique Marina. « On a essayé d’apprendre quelques mots, mais on parle l’anglais aussi. » Malgré les difficultés, les deux groups sont très enthousiastes et aiment bien leur temps au JamBe 2013.

The acrobats of Magnatio

If you were near sub camp Magnatio yesterday around lunchtime, you must have heard some strange sounds. We went to meet Pablo (17), from Castell de Fels, Catalunya (Spain), who was playing a strange instrument. « This instrument is a gralla. I learned to play the gralla in a local group of gralla players. We play it in Catalunya to accompany castells, which are towers of men, women and children. In my group, we reach a height of 8 people ». Pablo and a friend of his, who both are castellers, demonstrated their impressive techniques.

The castells are registered in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisations) since 2010. Go meet Pablo and his friends, and discover that unique technique !

We hebben ondertussen genoeg aandacht besteed aan andere werkgroepen, tijd om het over de belangrijkste werkgroep van allemaal te hebben: team Communicatie. Vanuit een lokaal in het hoofdgebouw zorgt team Communicatie elke dag voor dit krantje, steekt het JamBe TV in elkaar en houdt het zich bezig met de perscommunicatie. Ondertussen stond JamBe 2013 al in het Nieuwsblad en Het Laatste Nieuws en kwamen we aan bod op VTM en RTV!

Team Communicatie komt doorgaans maar traag op gang. De eerste helft van de dag gaan de reporters en fotografen op zoek naar leuke verhalen, anekdotes, roddels en beelden die ze willen delen met het kamp. Er wordt ’s ochtends gepland wat er in het krantje komt, maar er is natuurlijk ruimte voor iemand die een sterk verhaal wil delen.

In de namiddag worden alle tekstjes en filmpjes uitgeschreven, nagelezen en gemonteerd. De drie cameramannen, Arthur, Micha en Kurt hebben elkaar pas hier leren kennen, maar de samenwerking verloopt vlot. “Met twee Nederlandse collega’s ben ik misschien wel de enige Vlaming die in de minderheid is op JamBe”, lacht Kurt. “Maar we werken uitstekend samen en leren elke dag nog van elkaar bij”, stelt Micha me gerust.

Het fototeam is steeds druk bezig. Uit de honderden foto’s moeten de pareltjes geselecteerd worden die in het krantje, op de Facebookpagina en de website komen. Tussendoor moeten ze natuurlijk nog op pad om al die foto’s te maken. “We gaan vaak mee op pad met een subkamp om leuke actiefoto’s te maken. We proberen onze aandacht te verdelen over

de groepen, zodat iedereen aan bod komt”, legt Pieter uit.

Ook Mathias maakt foto’s. Samen met zijn buddy Kamil staan ze in voor de reportages. Vincent en Chip zien er dan weer op toe dat het krantje ook Frans- en Engelstalige artikels bevat. “Het is immers een drietalig kamp, en daarom maken wij een drietalig krantje”, verklaart Chip. Als enige Franstalige voelt Vincent zich goed in het team: “Iedereen is vaak op pad, maar de samenwerking verloopt goed. Als we allemaal samen zijn, wordt er hard gewerkt.”

Alle teksten komen samen bij Julie, die de lay-out van dit krantje verzorgt. Haar job begint eigenlijk waar de andere eindigen: alle teksten worden samengegoten en opgemaakt. “De eerste avond duurde het tot twee uur voor we konden beginnen printen, maar ondertussen loopt alles heel wat vlotter. Toch zit onze dag er nooit voor elf uur op”, legt Julie uit.

De lijm die het team bijeen houdt heet Eline. Zij houdt zich bezig met alles, ze coördineert de cameraploegen, ze leest de teksten na, schrijft zelf ook wel eens een stukje en beslist wanneer het krantje klaar is om gedrukt te worden. “Ik beslis!”, vat Eline het proces samen. Met harde hand houdt ze haar troepen in het gareel. “Ik krijg er een kick van”, lacht ze, “en tussendoor mag ik woordvoerdertje spelen!*
