The year 2009 was filled with panic that the recession would affect theIndian telecom industry too, though we had predicted otherwise. In FY2008-09, equipment vendors' revenue grew by 20% (Rs 1,14,526.9 crore)defying the recession. Service providers' revenue also grew by 20.7% (Rs157,542 crore) almost equal to the growth of FY 2007-08.

The year was certainly an eventful one in many ways, changing the marketdynamics for operators and equipment vendors altogether. Rajat Mukarji,

chief corporate affairs officer, Idea Cellular observes, "The year gone by washighlighted by important events such as new operators entering the market, price wars due to overcapacity, further decline of ARPUs due to dual SIMusage, delay in spectrum allocation and 3G auction, etc, changing themarket dynamics. Due to the intense tariff war, price is reaching anunsustainable level for network operators. The year also saw urban areasachieving 100% teledensity

  • 8/9/2019 Telecom Sp

    46/62

It is true that almost all the verticals felt the heat of the sweeping global recession, but the telecom industry showed resilience. As Jayant K Rastogi, country head &area sales director, Indian subcontinent, Enterprise Mobility, Motorola says, actually there was no impact of recession on the Indian telecom industry; it wasonly a sentiment that hit the industry and companies adapted various reactionaryand precautionary measures, cost-cutting being the overused measure. In fact,

many milestones were witnessed by the industry in 2009.

A Nokia spokesperson says, "Telecom is perhaps one of the sectors that defied themagnified impact of the global slowdown in India. In fact, we have surpassed the500 mn subscriber mark, and seen increased consumer propensity to experienceservices. The mobile Internet growth has nearly doubled. We have also witnessedforeign investments to the tune of Rs 9,815 crore during April-October 2009 in thesector and robust local manufacturing growth. For a lot of companies includingNokia, local manufacturing facilities are emerging as global hubs." While theslowdown might have dampened immediate infrastructure expansion plans forsome, at an overall level, the industry has enjoyed significant growth in India.

  • 8/9/2019 Telecom Sp

    47/62

In our forecast on the trends and expectations in 2009, only two things did not happen;number portability and full-fledged 3G, thanks to the government's slow action on thesefronts. But in 2010, MNP will get implemented for sure, and 3G is set to become a reality too.As Dileep Kumar of ADC Krone says, the biggest disappointment has been the inability of the

government to translate the interest around 3G into a reality falling behind China, Pakistan,Sri Lanka and even countries like Vietnam. A Nokia spokesperson says, "We feel that 2010will probably be the first year that the Indian telecom consumers will experience 3G, and weare looking forward to building the necessary ecosystem and keeping it ready by the time 3Gservices are rolled out."

  • 8/9/2019 Telecom Sp

    48/62

Thus, 2010 will be a significant one for the Indian telecom industry, but notwithout challenges. The huge challenge in front of the operator now is decliningARPUs. In the current scenario, the margins and return indicators may come underpressure as ARPUs continue to fall. According toGartner, the revenue per voiceconnection will continue to fall as consumers carefully watch their spendings.

Consumer cost-saving pressure should lessen in 2010, and we expect voice revenueto decline by approximately 5% each year thereafter. Also, competition will be

intensified among operators with market liberalization and new entrants. But, forthe new entrants doing business may not be easy and they should be capable ofrolling out in shorter time. A longer rollout time could mean loss of substantialmarket share to other operators.

In a nutshell, it is clear that quality of service will take center stage and theproverbial 'customer is the king' will be witnessed once again. The result is: moreservices, more quality, but with less cost for customers. But for operators, it will be

a challenging task to offer this deadly package to their customers. Vendors willalso gain as network operators will be forced to strengthen their infrastructure andadd new technologies.
