Dec. 27-30, 2016St. Louis Community College – Meramec
Happy Holidays,
Welcome to the 2016 Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament. Ameren co-workers are dedicated to powering the quality of life for our customers and communities and we are proud to support this event.
It’s rare to attend a basketball tournament that features such intense competition, yet all players are on one team; our fight with cancer unites us.
Let me give you an update on the score. Today, two out of every three people diagnosed with cancer will survive. With your help, we are aiming to make that three out of three. The mission of this tournament is to increase the odds by raising funds for critical cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
I encourage you to put your best sportsmanship on display and give these players the loud and positive support they deserve. On behalf of those we know and love who are fighting and surviving, and in honor of those we have lost, please do whatever you can to help Coaches vs. Cancer score a victory for all who need a win.
Warmest Regards,
Warner BaxterChairman, President and CEO, Ameren

THIS YEAR’S HONOREE IS DR. JON CLARK, principal of Webster Groves High School, who has battled cancer with grace, energy and determination since he was first diagnosed in 2006. His optimism and grit have been an inspiration to all.
Webster Groves has hosted numerous fundraisers for cancer research in honor of their principal, including a special “100 For Clark” Night, hosted by the school’s basketball team. Prior to coming to Webster, Dr. Clark coached basketball at another school, and when he left, he was just shy of 100 wins. So he was invited to coach a game against Rockwood Summit in hopes of getting his 100th win. The game was sold out and the gym was packed, and when Webster won, the team carried Dr. Clark off the court in celebration.
Dr. Clark is currently battling brain cancer for the second time, yet he continues to inspire others. With his positive attitude and unbelievable toughness, he brings boundless enthusiasm and a solid commitment to everything he does.

Last season, the Cadets notched a 20-9 record and won a District title before their playoff run was ended by Chaminade in the state quarterfinals. Overall, 2015-2016 was a busy season for CBC. They won the D.C. Wilcutt Tournament, took 2nd in the Springfield Tournament, took 2nd in the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament, and took 2nd in Metro Catholic Conference league play. Junior forward Kale Catchings (10.1 ppg/5.2 rpg) should
get even more touches this season as CBC is still feeling out replacements for integral graduates like Jordan
Barnes, Christian Willis and Duane Clark. Another key player will be senior guard and four year varsity player Sam Orf (5.5 ppg). Orf was a member of CBC’s state championship team in 2014, and will add some needed experience to the equation. Catchings is being recruited by DePaul, Austin Peay and Northwest. Meanwhile, Orf has received interest from Drury, Northwest, and Truman State University. “We’re young, but this group has a lot
of potential. Our first priority is getting some experience under our belts,” says head coach Justin Tatum.
“Although there are high expectations for this team, it still is a rebuilding year.”

DeSmet finished last season with a final mark of 13-15 after losing to Hazelwood Central in their District Championship game. It’s been a busy offseason for this promising team. Blake Ahearn, an
alumnus and former professional basketball player, was hired on as head coach, while Brooks Ford, son of new St. Louis University head coach Travis Ford, has also joined the Spartans after
transferring from Oklahoma. Team captain Ryan Stipanovich (14.0 ppg/4.0 rpg), a 6’7 Bradley
University commit, will lead a tough and uptempo Spartan group on both ends of the floor. Although they’ve lost six seniors to graduation, plenty of experience in the form of seven varsity players is returning for DeSmet this season. “There are two things we can control: attitude and
effort,” says Ahearn. “If we handle those things, we will have success.”

The Wildcats finished last season 12-14 after losing in the second round of Districts to Lafayette High School. Eureka returns four varsity letter-winners after losing six seniors to graduation. The
Wildcats’ leading scorer, senior Alex Cleary (10 ppg/3 rpg), returns as the leading scorer from last year’s team. After earning 1st team all-conference honors in the Suburban West as a junior, the 6’2”
sharpshooter should pace a rugged squad this season. “Toughness and togetherness is our style,”
says head coach Austin Kirby. “We expect to play hard every night and outwork the opponent.”

The Dragons, newcomers to the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament, are coming off of an excellent 2015-2016 season in which they amassed a 21-8 record. They won the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Conference for the first time in school history, and also made it to the District
Championship where they lost a close game to Vashon, the eventual state champion. A trio of reigning first team all-conference players: Antonio Burks (15.2 ppg/ 5.2 rpg), Yahuza Rasas (13.2 ppg/6.6 rpg), and Yuri Collins (8.6 ppg/ 7.43 apg) will be the core of this deep, talented squad. Since they lost only two players to graduation after last season, expect their suffocating full court pressure to put even
more heat on opposing teams. “I call this the ‘Big Boy Tournament.’ The competition is tough here,” says head coach Kelvin Lee. “We have to enter each game knowing we have a chance to win. If we come in and compete hard, we’ll surprise some people at the end of the day.”

The Hawks are the returning champions of the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament and were
widely regarded as one of the top teams in Missouri last season. Hazelwood Central also won the Vianney Tournament and posted a 25-5 record before they were bested by a Jayson Tatum-led Chaminade, the eventual state champion, in a heavyweight battle which occurred in the sectional
round. Now, after losing 11 seniors, including now Kansas State University guard Xavier Sneed (20.2 ppg/6.7 rpg), the Hawks are returning only 3 varsity players. Expect junior Shaun Williams (6.8 ppg),
Cameron Williams and Telly Wright to continue the Hawks’ winning tradition. “We will be a very
tough, competitive team that features many new pieces,” says head coach Josh Martin. “We expect to be one of the toughest groups around that can compete with any team on any given night.”

The Warriors will be hard pressed to improve on last season. Jennings was a powerhouse — they notched a 22-5 record, took 1st place in the Kirkwood Invitational, took 1st place in the Lutheran South Invitational and also won the Suburban Central Conference Championship before losing a
51-50 heartbreaker in the District Championship to Riverview Gardens. The Warriors return four varsity players after losing five seniors to graduation. Senior forward Rajea Johnson (10.6 ppg/8.6 rpg) will only build on a monster 2015-2016 campaign in which he nearly averaged a double-double. Meanwhile, Kyle Young (9.7 ppg/1.83 stl), a transfer from Riverview Gardens, is also
expected to make sizeable contributions. “This is the quickest team I’ve ever had. We’ll be special and unlike any team I've ever coached,” says head coach Travis Wallace. “We have the potential to
be one of the top 4A teams in the area.”

Kirkwood posted a mark of 18-9 last season after losing to Christian Brothers College High School
in their District Championship game. The Pioneers also finished 2nd in the Suburban South Conference and appeared in the championship game of the St. Charles West Tournament. They’ll return an experienced team which includes seven lettermen, three starters, and two three-year starters. Senior center Tahj Telfair (11.6 ppg/7.6 rpg/3.15 bka), a Division 1 football recruit and
basketball all-conference/district honoree, will be a force to reckon with in the paint. Meanwhile,
all-district senior guard Sam Gunn (8.5 ppg) will provide experience in the backcourt as senior forward Brendan Sievers (7.1 ppg) sets up behind the 3-point line. “The veterans have gained great
experience in several championship runs a season ago and the newcomers are expected to contribute right away,” says head coach Bill Gunn. “We expect to compete for tournament,
conference, and district championships this season.”

The Lancers are yet another program that had a stellar 2015-2016 season. Lafayette amassed a 21-8 record on their way to being the undefeated champions of the Suburban West Conference, and
won their District before falling to CBC in the sectional round of the state tournament. Although five seniors were lost to graduation, seven letter winners are returning, including three players who saw
significant action. This season, Adam Flinn (11.2 ppg/3.8 apg), a 1st team all-conference and all
district guard, will lead a squad focusing on defending and rebounding. "I'm very excited about this team. We have some good returning talent and some varsity newcomers hungry for playing time,” says head coach Matthew Landwehr. “This group will continue to grow together as the season goes
on to put us in a position to compete for our conference and district championship.”

This Flyers team will feature many fresh faces when compared to the Lindbergh squad that
notched a 14-14 record just last season. A staggering 10 seniors were lost to graduation. Still, 3
starters, all currently college-recruited seniors, are returning for this team that took 2nd place in the Hillsboro Tournament and Lindbergh Tournament before falling to SLUH in the semifinals of District play. Guard Ryan Lacefield (6.5 ppg) is finally back to full strength after a knee injury, Dominic Davis (14.6 ppg/6.2 rpg) was a 1st team all-conference selection, and 6’6” forward Spencer
Levi (8.4 ppg/4.0 rpg) has grown his game over the off season. “There’s length on our front line and pretty good talent as compared to previous years. We’re really looking to develop an ‘attack’ mentality on both ends of the floor,” says head coach Jason Wolfard. “We are looking to improve on last year's record and put ourselves in a position to compete at a high level at the end of the
season.”

The Mustangs ended last season with a record of 17-10 after they were bested by Parkway Central in the District semifinals. Although four seniors were lost to graduation, a whopping eight players
are returning for this program which saw quite a bit of success in 2015-2016. Marquette narrowly missed a conference championship since they posted an 8-1 record in league play, and they also defeated O’Fallon Christian to win the Eldon Tournament. Expect senior guard Nick Bulanda (14.9 ppg/5.2 rpg), a Division 1 football recruit, to pace the Mustangs while senior forward Alex Disanza
(4.8 ppg/5.5 rpg) plays an increased role down on the blocks. This team is all about playing hard and together, especially on the defensive end of the floor. "I'm excited about watching this team
develop as the year continues,” says head coach Kevin Schultz. “We look to improve every single day and take one day at a time."

Last season, the Longhorns posted a 23-6 record and won the Suburban Central Conference before their state championship run was ended by Sikeston in the state quarterfinals. Although this team
has lost eight seniors, four of which were starters, to graduation, the key to their previous success remains: Wyatt Yess (15.4 ppg/8.6 rpg/1.86 blks). Yess, a 6’8 senior forward, is a four year starter with All State honors who plans on attending Yale University to play basketball. With Yess as a center piece roaming the paint and occasionally popping outside, there will be plenty of
opportunity for upcoming players to fill in around him. “We’re coming off a very successful year which sets the bar and excitement level high for this season. We want to play tough defense and
maximize our strengths offensively,” says head coach John Wright. “We’re confident that we’ll improve each day in practice so that we can play our best basketball when districts arrive.”

St. Charles West ended an impressive 21-10 campaign last season after losing to Vashon in the
District quarterfinals. The Warriors sported a perfect 10-0 record on their way to claiming the Gateway Athletic Conference North Championship. There’s opportunity abound for fresh faces to
step up as this season gets rolling. Nine seniors were lost to graduation last season and only five seniors are returning. Look for 6’6” senior center Tommie Whitney (6.9 ppg/8.0 rpg) to anchor a core of sophomores and juniors. Sophomore point guard Trent Champagne inherits a historically
talented role at St. Charles West. He’ll seek to become the third consecutive Warrior point guard to earn a college basketball scholarship at the end of his tenure. “I expect us to be competitive and surprise some teams as the year goes along. This group may have some young parts, but we are very hard workers and will be better in January than in November,” says head coach Patrick
Steinhoff. “Still, we don’t have much experience coming back, so we’ll have our ups and downs.”

SLUH enters this season looking to build upon an excellent 21-10 campaign last year. The Junior Billikens
won the Pattonville Tournament and their District tournament before eventually finishing 3rd in the state
tournament. SLUH will have a plethora of experience to draw from since only three seniors were lost to
graduation after those deep tournament runs. Look below the basket to see senior B.J. Wilson (7.0 ppg/6.0
rpg) patrolling the paint along with senior Brent Smith (7.0 ppg/5.0 ppg). Wilson has drawn interest from the
University of Dallas while Smith has interest from Brown University and a standing offer from New York
University. On the outside, senior Brandon McKissic (15.0 ppg/4.0 apg/ 4.0 rpg) is the man who does it all for
the Jr. Bills. McKissic’s stand out performance earned him All State honors for the second straight year in
2016. Although he received offers from Depaul, Murray State and Missouri State along with interest from SLU,
Wichita State, and Tulsa, McKissic signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of
Missouri-Kansas City. “We’re an aggressive, fast paced, defensive minded team,” says head coach Erwin
Claggett. “We’re looking to build upon our success from the past two years to become the first SLUH team in
57 years to win a state championship.”

The Trojans finished last season with a 15-12 record after falling to Timberland High School in their District Championship game. Troy returns eight lettermen after only losing three seniors from that
squad which also finished 2nd in conference play. Expect junior point guard Drew Deters (6.0
ppg/4.0 apg), already a 2-year starter, to expand his role even further to help senior Brandon Bassham (16.9 ppg/9.0 rpg) shoulder a heavy workload. “We have a group of boys who enjoy competing and making each other better. With three returning starters and many others with experience at the varsity level, we are looking to improve on last year,” says head coach Dan Moore.

Cancer Holiday Tournament in addition to earning 2nd place at the Shawnee Mission East Tournament. They return four varsity players after losing six seniors to graduation. Eric Krus (14.2
ppg/7.5 rpg) boasts inside and outside scoring potential since connecting on 61% of 2-point
attempts and 39% of 3-point attempts last season. Vianney also expects major contributions from returning starting point guard, and starting Vianney football quarterback, Tionne Harris (3.8 apg/1.0 stl). “The Vianney basketball team will continue to be a tough and hard-nosed team who
will be prepared, unselfish, and committed to playing together on both ends of the floor,” says

The Statesmen enter this season as one of the top teams in the area after steamrolling their way to a 26-2 record
last season. Even though Webster Groves’ playoff run was ended prematurely by SLUH in their District
Championship showdown, the Statesmen had an impressive season. They won the Webster Classic, the
McDonald’s Smith Cotton Classic, and the Suburban XII South Conference Championship. Five seniors were lost
to graduation, while seven letter-winners are returning under head coach Jay Blossom. Junior guard Courtney
Ramey (17.7 ppg/8.3 rpg/4.61 apg/2.68 stl) will undoubtedly be a dominant force on both ends of the floor. He is
being recruited by Louisville, Florida, Texas and Iowa State in addition to multiple other highly esteemed
Division 1 programs. On defense, look for senior and fellow guard, Cam Potts (6.1 ppg/3.8 rpg), to lock down the
other team’s best player while Ramey demonstrates his ball hawking prowess. When Vianney transfer Carte’Are
Gordon becomes eligible in January, the Statesmen will be a force to reckon with. “Expectations are high for us
this season with a good balance of returning letter winners and newcomers stepping in,” says Blossom. “A
challenging schedule that includes Vashon, Morgan Park (Chicago, Illinois), SLUH, and Chicago Uplift in addition
to the Webster Classic and Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament should help our guys for postseason play.”
