GET PAST THE MEAT GET PAST THE MEAT GET PAST THE MEAT GET PAST THE MEAT

Remembering the delicious foods of Egypt, the people complain that they want meat. Moshe takes their words to heart; he doubts his own ability to carry the burden of leadership. In response, God tells Moshe to gather 70 elders who will share the burden with him.

Ramban asks, “Why does ‘hiring’ new prophets in anyway limit Moshe’s burdens?” Would they have meat with which to meet the people demands? And even if they did – would the people stop complaining to Moshe? The buck would still only stop at the top, with Moshe.

The Ramban answers that when many people shoulder leadership, the frustration and anger is calmed by distributed accountability. Multiple leaders can address people’s hurts through personal caring interactions, even if they cannot solve the complaint. These interactions themselves resolve the need; they guide the people to reassess who they are and whether meat is really the problem.

The Ramban’s answer reflects a diRerent understanding of the leadership problem that Moshe faced. It was not a technical problem of providing meat. It was an adaptive problem of people growing above the need for meat. Harvard University Professor Ronald Heifetz distinguishes between technical challenges and adaptive challenges. A technical challenge is one where you have a problem and someone else has the solution. Adaptive challenges are diRerent. They arise when we are part of the problem. We ourselves must change. Moshe gathers the 70 elders together to oRer leadership that will help people grow: they will engage in social learning, innovation, and change. Perhaps it is for this reason that Moshe compares the leadership demands upon himself to that of a nursing mother. Like a mother nursing her child, adaptive leadership helps people develop and grow.

In applying this lesson to our own lives, we must acknowledge that people don’t like this type of leadership because it is slow and demanding. As Ronald Heifetz writes, “In times of distress, people yearn for technical solutions that require the minimum of personal or collective responsibility and disruption.” Yet, if we are to cure what ails us as individuals and as a society, we must put aside hopes for magical pills (and similar technical fixes). We must join the elders in acknowledging hurt while building up better souls.
