Dear Colleagues,

It will be an honour for us to welcome you inIstanbul for the ISPD 2008 bi-annual Congress.

The main goal of the 12th Congress of ISPD willbe to pave the way for a scientific environmentwhere recent developments in peritoneal dialysisare reviewed, the results of research are discussedand ideas are exchanged. During the Congress, regional and global aspects of social, political andeconomic issues related to Peritoneal Dialysis willbe discussed. We look forward to an excitingmeeting where many new discoveries will bepresented and challenging discussions on currentcontroversies will take place.

The congress venue, Istanbul Convention andExhibition Centre (ICEC), is located at the heartof the city’s business, cultural, gastronomic andcommercial districts and is also within walkingdistance of 18 quality hotels that will beaccommodating about 3400 guests.

During the ISPD Congress, we will do our best toensure that the social program will be as impressiveas the scientific program. Because of its location, infrastructure and the facilities it provides, webelieve that the ICEC Centre will be just the rightchoice of venue for social activities as well.

Istanbul is the only city in the world built on twocontinents. It stands on the shores of the uniquelyappealing Bosphorus strait (Istanbul Bogazi) wherethe waters of the Black Sea intersect with those ofthe Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn estuary.Istanbul is a city meant to be a capital and hasindeed been the capital of three great empiresRoman, Byzantine and Ottoman which dominatedthe world. The city is also a meeting place of peoplefrom many different religions and cultures whocome together and live in peace. Today, it housesthe precious remains of these civilizations andstands with all her glamour and mysticism as aharmonious link between East and West, antiqueand modern. It is one of the most outstanding, enchanting and lively cities of the world.Furthermore, it has an atmosphere of its own withits life-style, people and numerous attractions.

We are sure that Istanbul will be an excellent venuefor the ISPD 2008, and will endow us with manyprecious and long-lasting memories to cherish.

We look forward to seeing you in Istanbul in 2008.

Dr. Cengiz UtaflPresident of the Congress

“Positioning PD towards the Future”

The 11th Congress of the ISPD in August 2006, HongKong was a huge success. It attracted over 2500participants from all parts of the world. They witnessednot only the success of the Congress, but also thesuccess of peritoneal dialysis therapy. Leaving theCongress, participants were convinced that PD is asuccessful renal replacement therapy and should playa more important role in renal replacement therapy.Unfortunately, due to various factors, PD therapywas not very well received in many parts of the world. The message is clear: we have to further improve PDtherapy and care, and win the advocacy of thenephrology community and CKD patients for PDwith better results.

The motto of the 12th Congress of the ISPD“Positioning PD towards the Future” is veryappropriate in this context. The year 2008 will be theright time for us to display the latest results of PDresearch and development, to define the superiorityof PD therapy and its role in renal replacementtherapy. The Congress will carry the energy andmomentum in developing PD further.

Istanbul is a city of rich culture and history, locatedat the ‘bridge’ between the East and the West. Holdingthe ISPD in Istanbul symbolizes the exchange of ideas, concept, effort and dedication in the development ofPD from all parts of the world. The Turkish nephrologycommunity has been very active in research in PDwith lots of scientific publications of great impact. Iam sure that the Congress, under the lead of Prof.Cengiz Utas and the participation from internationalrenowned PD leaders, will provide us an excitingCongress with an informative and stimulatory program, helping PD development towards the future.

I welcome you to join us in Istanbul 2008, both forits being one of the most attractive cities in the world, and for the development of peritoneal dialysis andthe benefit of our patients.

Yours sincerely

Dr. Wai-Kei LoPresident ISPD

On behalf of the Turkish Society of Nephrology(TSN), I am pleased to welcome you to Istanbul, thecity of timeless treasures, and to the ISPD 2008Congress to be held there on 21-24 June, 2008.

The foundation of TSN in Istanbul in 1970 coincidedwith that of many of the Western European NephrologySocieties. TSN successfully hosted the 15th ERA-EDTA Congress in Istanbul in 1978, earlier than manyEuropean countries. On 4-7 June 2005 it has hostedin Istanbul once again the 42nd ERA-EDTA Congressthat broke prior records for abstract submission andparticipation.

Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis was first introducedto Turkey in 1964 and was used for many years as animportant treatment modality for ARF and even forselected cases of CRF due to the shortage of HDfacilities. During the late 1980s modern CAPD wasintroduced to the country and from the early 1990son it has developed into a major treatment modalityfor suitable CRF patients. On the latest ERA-EDTARegistry report on the web (2004), Turkey is foundto possess the 3rd largest peritoneal dialysis populationin Europe. At present in 2006, 4994 CRF patients(4523 adult and 471 pediatric) are under treatmentwith either CAPD or APD at 101 active PD centres(73 adult and 28 pediatric) throughout the country.

TSN has been actively interested with PD ever sinceits foundation in 1970, and the subject was treatedas a separate panel, symposium or course topic inalmost all past TSN National Congresses. Since l995,the TSN National Registry yearbooks have constantlydevoted separate sections to Turkey’s adult andpediatric PD data and statistics. This situation hasalso helped in recent years to stimulate the numberand scope of ongoing clinical and experimental researchon PD in Turkey. A joint study group on PD (TULIP)that works in close collaboration with TSN, has alsoembarked on national and international joint multi-centre studies that have already resulted in a numberof international publications in peer-reviewed highimpact journals in the field.

As members of TSN, we all look forward to welcomeyou to share with us an enthralling scientific andcultural experience in Istanbul on the occasion of theISPD 2008 Congress in June.

Dr. Kamil SerdengectiPresident of the Turkish Society of Nephrology

of this congress is:“Positioning PD towards the Future”.

We will focus on four important themes:

Research – New insights and new treatments

Practice – Sharing clinical knowledge

Education – Tomorrow’s best practices

Patient care – Improving quality of life

The face of time changes rapidly and newgenerations of doctors are coming into existence, together with new generations of patients. Inthe scientific programme of the ISPD 2008congress we strive to enhance an exchange ofknowledge between you, the doctors, the clinicaland the scientific, the old and the new, the eastand the west; therefore, together we will bepositioning Peritoneal Dialysis towards theFuture.

Aiming to attain these objectives, the ISPD 2008will provide a rich, diverse program on PeritonealDialysis and Nephrology. It will address allaspects of diagnosis, treatment and researchinto kidney disorders:

- Postgraduates courses- Conferences- Symposia- Round table sessions- Meet the professor sessions- Free communication sessions- Poster discussions- Nursing sessions- Satellite symposia organised by industry

Postgraduate courses will take place on June20th. The congress will then run between thedates, June 21-23. Sessions where abstracts willbe discussed are included in the program togetherwith the main sessions performed in 2 parallelhalls. In the poster discussion sessions, whileposters are exhibited in the poster area, selectedinvestigators for discussion will be asked toprovide active presentations.

The ISPD 2008 Organizing Committee will awardselected presentations and awards will be givenat the closing ceremony.
