Mass Schedule/Communion Services
Today we honor Mary for her “yes” to God. She gave birth to Jesus in rough conditions and raised him with love, dedication, and grace. Mary not only mothered Jesus, she is also our mother. The second reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Galatians speaks of God sending Jesus so that all of us might become daughters and sons of God. Mary and Jesus offer us acceptance and love into God’s family and continue to provide us support in our faith journey. We are encouraged to grow as Disciples of Christ as we follow Mary’s example. This feast leads us to ask ourselves, how can we share Mary and Jesus’ love with all those we encounter?

First Reading — The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27). Psalm — May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67). Second Reading —God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7). Gospel —The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21).

Explore the Catholic Faith We continue to call all adults interested in the possibility of Baptism and full
membership in the Catholic Church. RCIA is also for those previously baptized and who wish to discern the possibility of full membership in the Catholic Church.
There is also a FAMILY RCIA program for families with children of the age of reason (7 yrs or older) who are interested in the possibility of Baptism and full membership
in the Catholic Church. One or more parents attend the sessions with their child. Both groups begin with an inquiry period, followed by preparation for Baptism,
Eucharist, and Confirmation, if so desired by the candidate. For further information, please contact:
Katie Middleton at [email protected] or call 831-624-1271 x216.
Faith Formation had the honor of participating in Bitten Falge’s Christmas present distribution to farm-worker families in the Gonzalez region. Christmas joy was shared all around with the presents and food that were generously provided from our parish
giving tree. Thank you all for your contributions to the Bitten Falge Ministry, year-round and particularly at Christmas!

Volunteers needed for Children’s Liturgy of the Word
We are still in need of volunteers to lead Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:15 Children’s Mass. We are looking to build a team that can co-lead sessions once or twice a month. If you are eager to be involved in the community, but can’t make a commitment for every Sunday—this is the opportunity for you.

Always Forward, Never Back
Thank You for your Stewardship!
It is through your support that Carmel Mission continues its mission of spreading the Word of our Lord.
May God bless you all —Fr. Paul, Pastor (Collection totals for 12/25 will be available next weekend)
January 1, 2017 — The Octave Day of Christmas —Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God The blessing included in the First Reading from the Book of Numbers is one with which most of us are familiar. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you…” In the Jewish culture this has been known for centuries as the Aaronic blessing as it was dictated by God Himself to Aaron. It is important to note that it begins with “The Lord bless you.”
All blessings come from God. One error we make is to conclude that blessings always mean happiness or security or prosperity. God knows what blessings we need, even if we do not. They key for us is to be grateful for whatever blessings we may have. That mind set is at the hub of stewardship — knowing all blessings come from the Lord, and our need to be appreciative of them.
To be “kept” by the Lord is to turn our lives over to Him, to know that He is with us and that He loves us, blesses us, and does indeed “keep” us ever in His care. The truth is that to be blessed by God is one of the greatest gifts we can receive. It is available to all of us without exception.
During this continued Christmas season, it is well to remember and repeat the classic statement by the character Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens’ immortal A Christmas Carol: “God bless us, every one,” for certainly He does.

Docent Corner
On the left side of the altar there is the grave of Fr. Juan Crespi, an explorer, a missionary, a historian and a close associate of Fr. Junipero Serra. He came to the Americas in 1749 with Fr. Serra to help in the Spanish Missions. In 1769, he joined the Portolá expedition to Alta California travelling overland to San Diego. Crespi authored the first written account of actual interaction with the indigenous population. The journals are the primary historical documentation for early California. He also participated in two land expeditions to find Monterey Bay. In August of 1769, Crespi named a lush river valley Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula thus providing a name for what is now California's largest city, Los Angeles. They failed to recognize Monterey, but in one of the great ironies in Western History, they discovered a far greater location in San Francisco. They also discovered and documented the first redwood trees in the coastal mountains. Fr. Crespi continued his travels in 1772 to reconnoiter east San Francisco Bay or the “La Contra Costa” (the other coast) and discovered the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. Crespi suggested settling the bay area on the southern side and, as a result, King Carlos III of Spain ordered the immediate settling of what is now the city of San Francisco. He helped Fr. Serra establish the Carmel Mission and became his right hand man helping to found many more California missions. At Carmel, he focused his attention on creating a self-supporting agrarian society. He grew tomatoes, grain and other staples with mixed success. At the age of 61, Fr. Crespi began to succumb to cardiac and circulatory problems. He died on January 1st in 1782. Fr. Serra's dying request was to be buried next to his life-long companion. They both now lie at the foot of the main altar of the Carmel Mission.
This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.
