Description: A trifold brochure promoting a bike tour in Washington D.C.Programs Used: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoshopDate: March 26, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, newlogo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least fourquality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.

Process: I did a trifold so that the brochure would resemble a map. My logo was abike, that says “DC” on the tires, and I used that image of the bike throughout thedesign to create unity. I created the design in Illustrator using the curve and pen tools. I used text wrapping with my image of a helmet. I edited the helmet imagein Photoshop to get rid of unwanted parts of the image and the white backgroundusing the selection tool. I then placed the image in InDesign. I used paragraphstyling with my headlines and text to have continuity throughout my whole design.

logosDescription: Logo for a bakery.Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: Febuary 21, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Create three completely different, original logos to t a company orpersonal image that will appeal to the audience. Use only the Illustrator tools tocreate and draw your logos. No Illustrator pre-fabricated ares, symbols, etc.

Process: This project was so fun to do! I took a vote and most people liked this one

because they said the “B” was memorable. I didn’t like the look of having a wordinside of the bread, especially since it was one of the main words. I decided to takeout the word “bread” so the design could look more sleek. I then played around with the sizes of the bread, and manipulated the corners of the last design which was all in of surrounding white text.

Event adDescription: A full-bleed event ad to promote an air event using only Microsoft Word.Programs Used: Microsoft WordDate: January 31, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scanand import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Learn to use only Worddesign features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process: I scanned the photo of the airplane from a magazine. I put my title text with a

gradual ow toward that center of focus that drew attention to the airplane wings andstrong visual elements. I added the purple tinted translucent boxes that helped with the ad’s gestalt by giving it a cloud-like look, contributing to the yer’s airplane theme. Ichose the font for “air show,” because it reminded me of a militant/air force theme.

Process: I picked a gray background to go with my background, giving a goodcontrast to every element of the logo. For the other side of the business card, Imaintained a lot of the same information from the letterhead. I added the logo of the book, but eliminated the text, to show the book from a new perspective, and to convey the idea that the client is an “open-book.” I added the purple dots toadd cotinuity with the letterhead.

Description: A spiritually themed montage made by the blending of two or moreimages, and the use of typography.Programs Used: Adobe PhotoshopDate: February 13, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual messageLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image.

Process: I rst added the forest photo, and the with the layer tools I erased the women’s gure, and then placed it on the forest photo. I wanted to nd a way tohide the outline of her feet to make it more natural, so I added in the smoke. I then played with the opacity levels to make the smokey fog the way I liked. I thenadded the scriptures over my image and then lowered the opacity of the image to 5%. I then inserted a quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Description: Graduate Leadership Conference Flier in Black and White.Programs Used: Adobe IndesignDate: January 23, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic ier layout.

Process: After sketching a few designs, I used this one because it incorporated the best alignment with the black blocking “L” to tie all the elements together.

Using Adobe InDesign, I contributed to the proximity by grouping the visualelements together (logo, image, and QR code), which led the design through alogical ow. From an advertising standpoint, I decided to incorporate a QR code which will help more people actually visit the mobile site and register for theevent. The logo, image, and text was provided for me.

Description: Incorporating a color scheme into a good photograph to display my skillsin Adobe Photoshop.Programs Used: Adobe PhotoshopDate: February 6, 2016Course: COMM 130: 02Instructor name: Ben Pingel

Objective: Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, thenincorporate the colors into the layout. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop theimage, then place on an 8.5 x 11 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating

    graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process: I rst looked in the Visual FOCUS textbook and chose a triadic colorscheme. I went around my apartment nding things that seemed to t my colorscheme. I then decided my audience would be for children and was inspired by thestory of the Ugly Duckling. I had my roommates help me hold a few lamps, and Iused my Samsung NX2000 camera to shoot the photo. I then brought the photo intoPhotoshop and used these specic editing techniques: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I used the eye dropper tool to make my blue a more teal color, and then I smoothed it out with the brush.
