Father we thank you for all that you are to us and what you’ve done in us, by making us your dwelling place. It’s a privilege not taken for granted and one that ratifies the inseparable union we have with you in Christ Jesus.  We’ve gathered to honour the life lived of Abiola Olamide Aiyenigba, and the many hats donned as daughter, sibling, wife, mother, aunt, relative, colleague and friend. Above all varied roles listed; we are keen to express gratitude for that which has the most significant eternal value and that’s as your daughter.  Your word admonishes us in 1Thessalonians 4:13-15 not to mourn as the world does when a believer dies, which is without hope (having rejected the reconciliation Christ provides) but rather be reminded that Jesus died and rose again, and believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him when he does appear.  Abiola Olamide Aiyenigba slept in the Lord and dwells firmly in Christ Jesus, never to see the corruption of death (separation from God forever) for you are the resurrection and the life. You told the disciples in John 14:1-3 that you’d come back again after the sufferings and receive us to yourself; so that where you are, we shall be also.

Prayers For Abiola Olamide Aiyenigba

Abiola Olamide Aiyenigba slept in the Lord and dwells firmly in Christ Jesus, never to see the corruption of death (separation from God forever) for you are the resurrection and the life. You told the disciples in John 14:1-3 that you’d come back again after the sufferings and receive us to yourself; so that where you are, we shall be also.  So we thank you Lord for her time spent on earth with us and use this opportunity to witness and invite all present here to accept the gift of life in Christ Jesus, so that where Christ is; we also shall be, which plainly put is eternity with him. Everyone who believes in Christ, shall not perish but have eternal life.  Thank you Lord for all you are to us for in Jesus name we pray. Amen

Biography

Abiola started her working career at the Sighthill Medical Practice in Edinburgh, Scotland. She also worked at Nuirhouse GP practice also in Edinburgh. She joined the University of Liverpool’s Sanyu Research Unit not long after it launched in 2013 to start her PhD part-time, and was an important part of the unit’s development. She moved to Liverpool and continued working and looking after her beloved son while also pursuing her PhD. Doing her PhD part-time meant she was a constant over 6 years where she was always quick to offer friendship and support to other short term students visiting from Africa, many of whom were coming away for the first time. With her customary enthusiasm, Abiola created an intervention she called ‘FELICIA’ (the Fertility Life Counselling Aid), named after her beloved mother. The detailed manual for this course is now published (see Aiyenigba et al, African Journal of Reproductive Health 2019; 23:76-91). On finishing her PhD in Women’s Health she started working at the Centre for Capacity Research of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine until her sudden demise. She also wrote a letter on UK fertility interventions published by The BMJ (The British Medical Journal) in 2017. Abiola was described by her colleagues as a bright and warm individual, with an exciting research career in front of her. She is a great loss to the global health community.

Abiola was a loving and caring Wife, Mother, Sister and Aunty. She doted on her family and was a pillar of support to them collectively and individually in so many peculiar ways. She was especially loved by her many nieces and nephews of whom she was exceptionally fond. Abi/Aunty B as she was fondly called was a family oriented woman who loved and cherished her nuclear and extended family alike. She was extremely warm, kind hearted and lavish in her expression of love for her family and friends. Abi was known by family, friends and colleagues for her joyful disposition, warm hugs, expressive gestures, contagious laughter, positive outlook and genuine concern for the welfare and success of everyone around her. She brought light and laughter everywhere she went, was always ready for a good time and there was never a dull moment around her. She never allowed life’s challenges to weigh her down for long, but sought to always put the turbulences of life behind her quickly, while bravely marching on to a brighter future. Abi loved listening to music, dancing, travelling and singing. She was known for her love for colourful African fabrics that she often wore and even sold these as a side business - 'Bold and Beautiful fabrics'. She was a keen collector of African art which she enjoyed collecting as she travelled to and through many African countries for work.

As a devout Christian, she was a highly committed member of Alive Believers Church in Liverpool where she volunteered as a notable member of the choir and other capacities. She was also a volunteer of Light Up Liverpool, an inter-denominational project to bring worshippers together in the city of Liverpool. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Adetola whom she fondly called “Sweerim” (My Sweety), son, sisters, brother, in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces, aunties, uncles, friends, colleagues and well-wishers. Adieu, Abiola Olamide Olatokunbo Aiyenigba - till we meet to part no more. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon our beloved. May your Beautiful Soul rest in perfect peace. Amen

TributesAbiola mi,Olamide mi, it’s so hard to pen this down. To lose you is a

bitter wrench, the pain still cuts through my core. I think of things you used to say and all that we used to do together. You weren’t just a wife but a loving mother, confidant, and friend like no other - my

everything. Abiola mi, Sweeriem, knowing you are gone still feels like a dream my ever loving, tender, supportive, inspiring, nurturing and

forgiving darling. I still miss you as the pain and grief softens. As new memories are made I still miss you.

I know you can feel my tears and you don’t want me to cry yet my heart is broken because I still can’t understand why someone so

precious like you had to die. I pray that God would give me strength and somehow get me through as I struggle with the heartache that

came with your loss. Olamide mi, my mind still talks to you and my heart still looks for you

but my soul knows you are at peace. Sun ré o!!! I would cry you a river if crying could bring you back. Forever in my heart till when I see you

again - I love you.

Adetola Aiyenigba - Husband

Mummy I miss you so much. Your smile and your laugh was what kept everyone going in life. I never saw this one coming at all but.... I know God has a reason for everything. This doesn't stop you from being the strongest woman I know. You were the one who was always there through the good and bad. You were smart, funny and always knew when to get on with work. Dad and I are the luckiest people in the world to have someone like you. The best mother, wife, sister and aunty a person couldn't even dream about. Love you always Mummy  Your Legendary Levi.

Biola!! My super cool sister! I was hoping this’ll be a very bad dream. Never would I have imagined I’ll be doing this. I thank God for the privilege of being your sister, so loving and caring a person! My children are still trying to get used to the fact that auntie Biola is gone. I’m so dazed but I take solace in the fact that God is still good and He knows why He permitted it. I was looking forward to our being together and having fun! Oh! how i looked forward to it! I thank God for the times we were blessed to share! I’m missing you so much already!

Seyi Elaturoti - Sister

Abiola mi. My champion, my voltron, my best best friend, co-mother of my children, cheerleader, prayer partner, encourager, big sister...I could go on and on. I do not understand this, I can't wrap my head around it. I am beyond shocked. I am still hoping this is a bad dream and I'll wake up and call you to pray with.

Abiola I love you, I miss you, the boys are devastated, and I don't know how I'm going to parent them without your ever present wisdom

and care. You were always the first person they wanted to tell even their smallest achievements. They could always count on your loud celebrations and lavish praise and encouragement. Your Seannie

wants to talk to you, tell you how his day went. Your Damstar wants to show you what he's cooking next; that bake/cook off you’d both been gearing up for was not to be. Your Koko baby will not get to

recognise your amazing big love? Thank you for her first bath, first hair-do and first taste of weaning ‘amala and ewedu’ which you did just

days before you left us. How you loved my children and husband. How you loved me. Thank you Abiola. You gave so much, sacrificed

so much, loved us so big, gave the biggest cuddles. You were always so proud of me, never missed an opportunity to ‘hype’ me and tell

me and the kids I am beautiful. You loved my husband like your very own blood, never partial. You are amazing, Abi. We will make you proud. You lived big, loved big, cheered big and served big. You

raised a remarkable young man, Abi. What an amazing life. We love

you always, mama. Sleep well champion. Thank You Jesus for gracing my life with such an amazing love.

My dear aunty, every time an argument occurred you were always there to settle it. I miss the daily phone calls and your nice warm

cuddles. Your love for me and my siblings was unmatched. I still can’t believe what is happening. Your final days you spent with us are

precious and I will always keep it in my heart. Thank You for being the best aunty in the whole world. Your Seannie.

Sean Kuku - Nephew

Biola, you brought inspiration, encouragement, happiness and warmth to everyone who crossed your path. You were just a beautiful soul in every way. Hmmmm...your demise is unthinkable and devastating, but who are we to question God? You have finished your race and gone to be with your Maker, who has called you Home. It's only the Holy Spirit that can comfort us in this period and I pray He should grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and uphold the family you left behind. Biola, you will forever be in our hearts and I will miss you greatly. Rest in peace dearest Sis!

Tope Elaturoti - Brother in Law

‘Aunty Biola’. We can still remember vividly the way we’d call your name when you came visiting. How you bought us gifts and taught us

how to deal with situations. It’s such a sad thing for us writing all of these down because it makes us sad that you’re no longer around, but are we to question God. All we can do is to thank God for all He

has done, for even the Bible tells us that in all circumstances we should thank God. We are all affected by your departure and we just

pray that we would all be comforted. Rest in Peace Aunty Biola.

Dara Elaturoti - Nephew

I cannot even believe I am writing this, you were not just my sister in law, you were my friend, my big sister, my gist buddy, Superwoman,

always supportive ,inspiring and encouraging.  When my brother married you, you completed our family, I would miss

our catch up calls and chats, your advice and listening ears. You were so positive and optimistic, always willing to help even if it meant going out of your way. We had you for a little while but you brought us so much joy. May God grant you eternal rest and comfort Levi,

brother Tola, sister Seyi , your big baby Tope and everyone.  I love you and would miss you so much, thank you for the memories.

Forever in our hearts

Adejoke Etomi - Sister in law

My dearest. To think I will be writing this now, so early in our lives was not what we planned. We even talked about how we will look when

we are old. Who am I to question God but it's so difficult to understand. I look at your pictures and I cannot believe it. I still want

to pick the phone and hear your reassuring laughter...."Friendship me, Ore Bawo ni, So wa...". We went through many life cycles together

from secondary school till now. Over 30 years of knowing you. It was always so easy to make up with you after our petty arguments. So

much laughter shared. The way you just burst into my room shouting my name back in university. Came to see me in Amsterdam and

stayed a while as soon as you heard I was around. So many things to write. I thank God for the opportunity. I know you are smiling from

heaven, cheering me on, telling me I can make it no matter what the

challenge is. Say hello to Jesus for me and dance with the angels. I will miss you dearly.

Odaro ore...we will meet again in the morning.

Abi, Abiola mi....it has taken me a while to come to this point.  Sagamu, Ikenne, Ago Iwoye, Lagos, Edinburgh, Newcastle,

Liverpool....we sure came a long way...... I keep looking at my phone, hoping you would call. We planned I

would make that my Ibo soup you liked with goat meat this summer. You laughed at my funny Yoruba words, but still encouraged

me...who will give me my Yoruba lessons? Biola mi....it’s hard to think I would not hear or see you again...

I will hold onto the memories...your warm, sincere friendship, your boisterous nature and your love for God. I know the Almighty is in

control, so I will see you soon my dear sister and friend. Adieu...Abi May the Lord console the Aiyenigbas, Adelowos and extended

families.

Dr. Nnena Madu - Friend

Hmmmmm....where do I even start from? Is it from over 31years ago when we started our friendship in FGGC Sagamu whilst we were in the

same class and house? Or should I skip those 6 years and move to OSU where we were again together for another 5 years? Or do I skip

those years too and reminisce about how I'd drive from Lagos to OSUTH to see you guys whilst you were still in Med School? Or do I skip

those years and talk about all that happened the day you got married, or when Levi was born or all those times you talked so passionately about your love for 'iwe' and how you would keep

acquiring knowledge 'to stupor' like we always joked about? Or how you tease me on how you're 1week older than me? I recall every

single day of our friendship like yesterday.....our crazy laughters, even crazier fights and arguments especially the ones around food; our

never ending gists and tatafo which was your major! Haaaaaa ......Biola, how do I forget how you tried to hook me up

with...just because you wanted me to be happy and settled? I pray for Tola, Levi, Seyi, Tope and all your other family members and

friends....may we all be comforted knowing you are resting in the Lord! Sun re o..ore mi! Friendship mi! Omo iya mi!! Love you so much!!!

I'm glad you knew that!!! xoxo Funmi Bankole Nee Ogunbayo Fummiebobo! Funmero! Friendship e!

Biola! Vivid memories of our days in Sagamu, Ikenne and Scotland, the shared laughters, the naughty escapades, experimentally

disastrous cooking sessions, being used as makeup lab rats by Seyi, the times we played together, cried together through the deep pains of loss, comforted each other with tears and hugs, spoke about our

hopes and aspirations, teased each other about falling in love, loved and bickered like sisters. You were my sister in charge of “everything- -little- bridesmaid” during my wedding, faithfully discharging your self-

imposed duties with strength, determination and loyalty. Your vulnerability was not known to many but I was privy to seeing that side of you, well masked by your sweet, sweet smiles. My one regret is not voicing all this to you, but I wrongly assumed we had a lot more time.

You left way too soon Biola, way too early, but rest now my dear Biola, rest in the comforts of Our Lord....rest...in peace

Tribute from ALIVE BELIEVERS CHURCH, Liverpool, UK Abiola, it's very difficult to put down in a few statements how much

your homecall means to Pastors, Leaders & Members of Alive Believers Church. Everyone & Every Department have been recalling with amazement how you can leave us when the things we laboured

together for have begun to blossom. We can summarise your memory with the words of our Lord Jesus in Matthew 25: 21, 23 "Well done,

good and faithful servant... Enter into the JOY of your Lord".

My darling Biola my friend turned sister, I remember the first time you were introduced to me by Tola almost 20yrs ago just as you first

started dating, I was jealous cos i taught you were taking my bestie away from me but it turns out you were the best thing ever to

happen. We became best friend/family. We both helped each other through the highs and lows. Witness you give birth to Levi ❤❤ that was

amazing, you were panicking and I was trying to make you and the doctors laugh while mum was praying. I have never seen Tola so

happy and I would continue to say you were the best, you had an amazing soul.

Am refusing to believe you have left this earth, why why why?! There is still so much you had left to do.

My Mrs B rest peacefully in the arms of your mum and dad. Missing you

Josephine Johnson

My sweet Abiola, you have been taken from us too soon. We didn't have time to celebrate our recent victories and accomplishments, I

was so looking forward to the next couple of years of jubilation, cause you were always ready for a party! You were a jewel, one of my

biggest champions, pushing me and Josephine Johnson encouraging me, you were a listening ear, calling me out on my crap when

needed, holding up a mirror for me to see, covering my shame and lifting me up when I was down. Your service in the house of the Lord

was admirable, taking on every activity with gusto…I still can’t believe you are gone, still waiting to hear my phone ring, and hear your voice

with your usual 'Guess what happened?'. You brought light to everywhere you went, and your laughter was so infectious. You have left a void and you will be sorely missed. We will continue to treasure

all you held dear. Rest well in the bosom of our Lord…Funlola Okupe

Hmm Biola. This is a hard one. That I'm writing this is unbelievable. My ever dancing and fun friend. You celebrated me when I achieved

something. You were there during the most trying time in my life.Thank you for your friendship, you encouraged me in my career and

continued to push me to go further. I remember leaving my kids with you at 6am so I could go back to work. You were a real one, sensitive

and dedicated to service for God. You were never too tired or unreachable. I love you, I miss you terribly. The kids miss you , you

spoilt them rotten. We'll keep an eye on your prized possession Levosti. Good night darling, till we meet again

Abiola, I can't believe I’m doing this for you…I can't believe that I am writing you a tribute right now, I can't believe that I will be putting out

your pictures for this reason, can't believe that we won't be seeing you again, so otipari niyen!!!..I thought we were going to sit together for our sons’ graduation like we always say, in fact I believed that on

their wedding day we shall be there reaping the fruit of our labours, in our Aso ebi. Abiola! you went too soon darling. You gave me your

shoulders countless times when situations overwhelmed me! We had cried together, fought, and laughed together...you were so real!! You

were a strong personality my Doctor. 2weeks ago I said to you...I'm happy that my life is sorted. I have a doctor friend,a lawyer friend and a pastor friend, so I know who to call for each situation. Biola you will

be greatly missed; my children will miss you. I want to believe you are with the angels right now, I pray you find favour and rest, I pray your passage shall be smooth with no fear, I

I can't believe I'm writing a tribute for you Biola..I cannot begin to find the words to truly express how I feel, this is so hard for me, I wish this was a post to wish you a happy birthday, you were such a genuine,

kindhearted, generous woman with a heart of gold, you do not judge, you accepted everyone the way they are, always willing to assist, you are the most considerate human being on planet earth,

always willing to sacrifice for others. Haaa Biola you lived, you loved, you served, you left so much behind but God knows best, who are we

to question the one that holds life in his hands. You will forever be remembered and cherished Biola. I know you are in the best place

right now. I pray for Tola Levi and the rest of the family, the good Lord will comfort you all. Rest in peace my darling in the comfort of your

maker, I love you so much and will greatly miss you❤

Fola Orisile - Light Up Liverpool

Each morning coming into work I would bob my head around your door to be greeted by the broadest smile on the planet. You were

always, always smiling. Your hearty laugh was so infectious; I can still hear it now. I admired you on so many levels, your hard work, your

generous spirit, your empathy for other people, your amazing son Levi and the values you instilled in him that makes him the wonderful

person that he is and finally the hard work that you did to improve the lives of other African women. It was hard enough Abiola when you

crossed the City to work at LSTM and I missed those moments of saying our morning "hi's". Your loss is immense, you will forever be in my

heart and soul. I treasure the memories we have shared. Your Liverpool family will always be here for the legend that is Levi. Sleep well my sister, may your soul rest in peace. Love you so much matey.

We were devastated to hear of Abiola’s death. Having first come to the University of Liverpool’s Sanyu Research Unit in 2013 not long after it launched, she was an important part of the unit’s development. Doing her PhD part-time meant that she was a constant over 6 years as other short term students came and went. And she was always quick to offer them friendship and support. When we had visitors from Africa, many of them coming away for the first time, she would be ready to meet and greet them, showing them the local shops and tourist sites. With a foot in both African and European cultures and with her friendly disposition she was the perfect person to do this. And then at the end of their stay, she would assist with assessment and organising the crucial night out at a local restaurant.

Abiola was a wonderful, sunny member of the team. But her own research studies showed that she was far more than that. No PhD is ever easy. But doing a PhD in two countries with very different cultures, whilst self-funding, working as a carer and looking after the wonderful Levi takes great determination and tenacity. At our monthly supervision meetings, she would often tell me of how well she was supported by her friends - both at church and beyond. And as she juggled her various roles we would often find her at her desk over the weekend or coming in with Levi. It was always great to see the warm, unerringly polite Levi who would share with us stories of his life and cathedral singing. And in seeing Levi’s charm and good nature, we also saw signs of Abiola’s love and guidance.

Abiola’s PhD research was to create and test a way of assisting Nigerian women coping with the tragedy of infertility. With customary enthusiasm she set about creating a course she called ‘FELICIA’ (the Fertility Life Counselling Aid) and writing a detailed manual to go with it (now published - see Aiyenigba et al, African Journal of Reproductive Health 2019;23:76-91). She went on to test it in a pilot randomised trial in 2018. She randomly allocated 8 women with psychological distress to use the intervention and 8 to usual care. The intervention was the giving of 6 hour-long sessions conducted by the fertility clinic nurses following Abiola’s self help workbook. And of the 8 who took the course, all but one was comforted and no longer scored highly on the distress scale that we used. In contrast, only one of those in the control group improved. When asked afterwards women spoke very highly of the intervention and how much it had empowered and helped them.

The publication describing this study was in its final stages of drafting to be sent for publication. It is very sad that she will not be around to witness the excitement and interest that this publication will arouse.

Abiola was a bright and warm individual, with an exciting research career in front of her. She is a great loss to the global health community as well as to her friends and family. We are devastated by her passing.

Andrew Weeks

Abiola – I am at a loss of what to say. You were such a powerful and strong lady, so full of life and energy, and I just can’t take it in that

you’re no longer with us. I will miss my desk buddy with your big laugh and even bigger heart; your singing in the office even when you

didn’t know you were doing it that made me smile; hearing about your adventures and the fun you got up to with Levi; chatting about

those feedback emails and how we were full of tough talk of what we would say back; seeing photos of you all dressed up glam with your beautiful friends and family. The world is not going to be the same

without you and I’m going to miss you Abiola.

Susie Crossman

Abiola my dear sister and friend, I am not sure I will digest this sad and unexpected news so soon. A few weeks ago you were cheering me

on and giving me great advice. You always showed a lot of love and empathy for your fellow human beings. I still remember the time spent

together during our field missions in Africa. I learned to rediscover Nigeria thanks to you. You taught me some lovely words of the

Yoruba language of which you were a proud representative. You showed great joy in life and great generosity. You have been a true

friend to me and a good colleague, always ready to help and support. What beautiful memories and a lot of joy shared with us, your colleagues and friends. We are inconsolable, but we will know how to draw from our mind the beautiful memories that you have engraved in us forever. You had a lot of faith in God, I know it. So, I will ask him to take care of your family, to console them and especially your son

I am so saddened by this news. Abiola was such a fun and positive person in the work place and had such a bright career ahead of her. My deepest sympathies to her family whom she spoke of often and warmly.

Abiola, we, your friends and sisters from FGGC Sagamu (your alma mater) are so saddened to hear about your passing. You always had a smile on your face and everyone had good things to say about you since this terrible news broken out. We pray that God grants your husband, son, family members, loved ones, and other friends whose lives you have touched the fortitude to bear this loss.

Clara O - FGGC Sagamu Alumni

I'm still in disbelief as this devastating news sounds so unreal! Abiola was such an optimistic and light-hearted soul and a dear colleague.

Words can't express how saddened I am for her loss. She will be greatly missed. My heart-felt condolences to her family.

It took me awhile to gain courage and strength to write this. I miss you very much Abiola. I may have the left the UK in 2019 but memories of our 3.5 years together will always be etched in my heart forever. Your wonderful bright smile, gorgeous hair and just comforting personality helped me through some really tough days during my PhD. You have a wonderful son and he will be your legacy. I still cannot believe that you have left us but I am sure God loves you very much to keep you closer to him. Sadly, we miss you badly dear. Rest in peace and love

you very much.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Abiola's passing. I wish her family every possible moment of peace and love during this

agonising time. I met Abiola at UofL when we were both at the Women's. When I moved to LSTM, she greeted me with an enormous

smile and hug on my first day. What a wonderful, warm and compassionate person she was. Her work was groundbreaking and so

important for women. This is devastating news, and she will be remembered.

All of us at the Centre for Capacity Research at the Liverpool School of Tropical medicine were shocked and devastated to hear about

the sudden death of our dear friend and colleague Abiola. Only the day before we had all been talking to her on one of our weekly virtual team meetings. She told us how happy she was to be staying with her

sister and her family in London following months of 'lockdown'. She was super-happy because had had the most peaceful and restful trip

to London that she had ever experienced - the train was virtually empty and very quiet. Abiola was such a cheerful, happy person, always willing to help others. Only a month ago she moved into a

new, higher level job with us. She was really excited about this next step in her career and was clearly on a pathway to be an

outstanding researcher. I really admired her 'can-do'; attitude, her professionalism, her determination to achieve everything to a high standard, but above all the way she combined this with friendliness

and thoughtfulness for others. I will miss Abiola very much and it was a privilege to have known her, and to welcome and work with her as a

key member of our team.

RIP dear Abiola. I never really got to meet you much, but you can be so proud of your wonderful son Levi who has graced us with his

wonderful personality, excellent sense of humour and voice in the cathedral choir. You always made sure he was on time, beautifully dressed and well mannered. I feel so sad for your family that you

have been taken so soon, but you can be confident and blessed that you will live on through your wonderful son Levi. I am heartbroken for

him. Much love and prayers to your family. Lee x
