May 20, 2020

To the Good People of St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church and School:

I write this third pastoral epistle during the pandemic on my thirty-first anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Thanks to

everyone at Mass this morning who tooted their horn in my honor at Father Roy’s request! Those who were with me 31 years ago

have said that none of us would have predicted 31 years later, that I would offer my anniversary Mass outside the Church in the

middle of a pandemic!

Speaking of outdoor Masses, a daily Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot has been offered and for the most part, all has gone well. I

am grateful to our staff: Father Roy, Christine Brandt, Bill Scherf, Kevin Callahan, Frank Fosbre, Ed Dunbar and Connor Peterson, and

volunteers: John Fleming, Bill Casian and Frank Rovani, who are instrumental for the smooth offering of the Mass. Inevitably, we

learn from experience. Therefore, the following are changes to receive Holy Communion:

1. On windy days, please do not extend your hand out the window. Rather, extend your hand inside your car and Father Roy

and/or I will place the host in your flat hand. Yesterday and today, there were three occasions when the wind caught the

consecrated host. All three hosts were retrieved, but this is a risk we cannot afford.

2. In anticipation of more parishioners attending Mass on Saturday evening (5:30 p.m.) and Sunday morning (8:00 a.m.,

10:00 a.m. and noon), we will have two or three Communion stations when leaving the parking lot. Please follow the

directions from the parking lot attendants.

As you may know, I have been asked by Bishop O’Connell to serve on the Post Pandemic Task Force for the Diocese of Trenton. This

ten-pastor committee is chaired by Monsignor Gervasio, Vicar General, and I am pleased to serve as secretary. We’ve been having semi

-weekly meetings to create guidelines for each phase of returning to the normal offering of Mass inside the Church. The phases are:

1. Parking Lot Masses where parishioners remain inside their vehicles

2. Parking Lot Masses where parishioners will be permitted to be outside their vehicles

3. Masses inside the Church with restrictions

4. Masses inside the Church with lesser or no restrictions

The timeline for these phases will be decided by Bishop O’Connell, after receiving advice from the Governor’s Office, with which the

Bishop is in frequent contact.

At St. Mary of the Lakes, all continues to go well. I am so very grateful to those who have been faithful in supporting our parish

financially and with your prayers. Father Roy and I are thankful for the steady flow of food that has come our way.

I encourage those who are struggling financially to take advantage of our St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) food pantry on Jones Rd. during

these hours: Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. If you are in need of food or financial assistance, it would be best

to call SVdP at 609/953-0021 to make an appointment before you come.

Let us continue to thank Almighty God that we have the gift of faith to rely on during these stressful times. I close this letter with the

following prayer I found online:

May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when our schools close remember those that have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love during this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other. Let us find a way to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbor. Amen.

Assuring you of my prayers, and asking yours in return, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Dan

Pastor

Private Prayer in Church

Please Observe These Directives •The Church is open for private prayer every day (see above box) from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

•Only 10 persons are allowed in the Church at any given time.

•Everyone 2-years-old and older must wear a mask.

•The Parking Lot Entrance is the only door to be used.

•Social distancing of six feet is to be observed.

•After a pew is used, leave the kneeler down so staff knows the area needs to be cleaned. Do not sit in a pew above a kneeler that is down.

•The public restrooms are locked.

•Please do not gather outside church, or in parking lot.

These directives pertain to the reopening of Church for private prayer. Other plans regarding Mass will be communicated when they are developed.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation! Father Dan

Outdoor Parking Lot Masses Please observe the following directives if you choose to attend

1. Outdoor Masses will be offered weather permitting. 2. All those in a high risk category are asked to stay home as Mass will continue to be simulcasted. 3. Please bring a mask for each person in your car. 4. When you enter the parking lot, you will be greeted by a parking lot attendant (usher). Please follow

their direction to a parking spot. 5. Cars will be parked every other spot to observe social distancing. Do not park in a spot where there is a cone. 6. You may roll down your windows but you are not permitted to get out of the car unless you are sick. If you get out

the car, the Mass will stop and Father Roy or I will direct you from the sound system to get back into your car. 7. On Sunday, the collection will be taken after the Mass. The usher/s will be standing at least six feet before the priests

who will be distributing Holy Communion. 8. Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass. Follow the direction of the parking lot attendants. 9. Holy Communion may be received only in the hand. 10. When you approach the priests (Father Dan will be on one side of the car, Father Roy on the other), please wear your

mask and extend one hand (flat) out of the car window. After you answer “Amen,” remove your mask and place the host in your mouth and then drive away after the last person in your car has received Holy Communion.

Vacation Bible School Update

Vacation Bible School 2020 has fallen victim to the pandemic. We have made the very difficult decision to cancel for this year. We all really look forward to VBS each summer; it is a labor of love involving an army of volunteers of all ages who devote a great deal of time to make this a truly wonderful experience for the children of our Parish. Hopefully, we can resume this much-loved program in 2021.

Members of St. Mary of the Lakes parish delivered the

Operation Yellow Ribbon donations to a Rose in

December and then extra non-perishable food items

to LUCY.

In Challenging times- it’s great to have supports like you!

Sheltering in place? Imagine if you had no place in which to shelter. Right now, with (as you know) our

host congregaons shut down and most of our volunteers and staff staying home, we are sll doing our

best to honor our commitment to homeless families with children. Our most recent family just moved

out into transional housing and we are in the process of selecng a new family in their place.

Your very generous donaon of $500 means more than you can know, and will bear good fruit! Thanks

to contribuons from our concerned community faith congregaons, companies and individual donors,

we are able to connue by using some new and innovave methods. Extraordinary mes call for extraor-

dinary measures. As you know, we will be using this donaon for motel shelter, as I doubt we will be able

to go back to our normal rotaon before May, if then.

IHN: serving homeless families with children since 1997. Four hundred and thirty-one families to date,

and as many more as we are able! Thank you!

Keep well and thank you again for thinking of the less fortunate at a me when

we could jusfiably be concerned only with ourselves and our families.

A PRAYER FOR GOING DEEPER O Divine Presence,

I do not enter the deeper realm all by myself.

Always you are there with me, as a guide to protect and direct me,

as a loving companion to embrace and support me, as a wise One to provide both challenge and solace.

O Divine Presence, as I go deeper to discover my roots,

wrap me in your love. Strengthen me as I face fear and insecurity,

surprise me with hidden treasures waiting within me. O Divine Presence,

when I feel shaky and uncertain from seeking and searching,

assure me often that I am always rooted in your love.

Remind me often that I am always rooted in your love.

Remind me often that your love never leaves me,

even when I lose the road to my inner home. O Divine Presence,

You desire my wholeness. You would never lead me anywhere

that would destroy me. Here is my life.

I place it in your care as I commit myself to going deeper.

Amen.

St. Mary of the Lakes This Week

All ministry and extracurricular activities at SMLCCS are cancelled.

A Coronavirus Prayer Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and

villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at

risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. May victims regain their strength and health

through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear. Stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Hear our prayer, O Divine

Physician. Hear our prayer.

Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my

soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Parish Office Drop Box Just a friendly reminder to please use the Parish Office

Drop Box next to the Rectory front door for drop offs and

church envelopes.

Thank you !

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE

Corona Marian Prayer O clement, O loving, O sweet

Mother Mary, we, your children of every nation, turn to you during this pandemic. Our troubles

are numerous; our fears are great. Grant that we may, with confidence, place them

at your feet as we take refuge in your Immaculate Heart. Bless us with peace, healing,

rescue, and timely help with all our needs. You are our Mother. Pray for us to your Son.

Amen.
