FRANKIE AND ALICE(Drama, R, 101 m.). It hasmany of the key ingredi-

ents for a prestigefilm: Oscar winnerHalle Berry, playinga stripper with multi-

ple personality disorder, ina story inspired by trueevents. Too bad it’s such acringe-inducing mess.

LOCKE (Drama, R,85 m.4). In writer-directorSteven Knight’s mesmer-izing jewel of a film, Tom

Hardy isso bril-liant wereadily

watch him drive a car andtalk on the hands-freephone for virtually the en-tirety of the movie. It’s abeautiful film to watch, asthe headlights seem ani-mated in the rain-filteredcolors of the night while a

man drives and drives andmakes life-changingphone calls.

OCULUS (Horror, R,105 m.). Here is a horrormovie that will reach out

and grab thatspot on yourspine thatproduces all

the chills. Thanks to thewonderfully twisted styleof director Mike Flanaganand four terrific young ac-tors playing brother andsister as children andadults, “Oculus” is one ofthe more elegant scarymovies in recent memory.

THE OTHER WOMAN(Comedy, PG-13, 109 m.).This would-be comedy isso tone-deaf, so excruciat-

ingly awful, it’s a mi-nor miracle the stu-dio didn’t confiscatethe original print

and lock it up. None of thestars — Cameron Diaz,Nikolaj Coster-Waldau orespecially the big andbroad Leslie Mann — es-capes this mess with ashred of dignity.

NOAH (Biblical epic,PG-13, 131 m.). One of

the most daz-zling and un-forgettablebiblical epics

ever put on film. DirectorDarren Aronofsky has de-

livered an emotionally in-volving and sometimesloony interpretation of thetale of a God-loving man(Russell Crowe, ferociousand razor-sharp) and hisark. Jennifer Connelly,Ray Winstone, EmmaWatson and AnthonyHopkins round out a stel-lar cast.

DOM HEMINGWAY(Crime drama, R, 93 m.).Playing the title character,

a formidablebrute just re-leased fromprison, Jude Law

at times lights up thescreen with the sheer fero-ciousness of his line read-ings. Pity he’s playing aboor who’s also a bore.

“I was not looking at the pres-ident when I started singing,”said Tedeschi, who will performSaturday in Paso Robles withher husband, guitarist DerekTrucks, and the rest of theTedeschi Trucks Band. “I wasvery nervous in that moment.”

As Tedeschi continued to per-form with her husband, soul leg-end Booker T and blues artist

Warren Haynes at a concerthonoring the blues, the singerbegan to work up her courage.

“Then I looked over atMichelle first,” she said, refer-ring to first lady Michelle Oba-ma. “And she was smiling sothat made me feel confident. So thank you, Michelle. She’s a

It’s confidence, Susan Tedeschi says, that helps herbelt out those powerful, emotive vocals whenever she

sings the blues. But when Tedeschi began singing at the White House

a couple of years ago, that confidence was weakened bythe fact that she was performing just a few feet from thepresident of the United States.

badass; I really do look upto her.”

Eventually, Tedeschi wasable to watch PresidentBarack Obama’s expres-sions as well.

Confident or not,Tedeschi admits there arestill times when she getsnervous.

“One of the scariestthings I find nowadayswhen I perform is when Ising the (national) an-them,” she said. “BecauseI’m all by myself, and it’s30,000 to 60,000 people.”

Luckily, Tedeschi hashad plenty to time to buildher confidence. As a child, she performed in roughly60 musicals.

“I’ve always been intosports as well,” saidTedeschi, who often sings“The Star-Spangled Ban-ner” before Major League

Baseball games. “I wasn’tjust a drama nerd. I was ac-tually a cheerleader threeyears. I played basketballthree years. I did track andfield and other sports.”

While she has alwaysmade her living through

music, Tedeschi comesfrom a family of supermar-ket and convenience storefounders. Her great-grand-father started what is nowthe Tedeschi Food Shops,a chain of more than 200convenience stores in the

New England area.Tedeschi, who lives in

Jacksonville, Fla., typicallydoesn’t see the stores un-less she’s in New Englandon tour.

“But they are awesome,”she said. “They have a

good deli.”However, food sales

were never in her future.Instead, she made her the-atrical debut at age 6 in aproduction of “Oliver!”

While Tedeschi’s motherinfluenced her to pursueacting, she eventually grewfonder of music, leadingher to perform in coverbands as a teen.

As high school wounddown, she consideredstudying acting, music orscience. But she eventuallyattended the prestigiousBerklee College of Musicin Boston.

It wasn’t until after collegethat Tedeschi became fondof the blues. But she was aquick study.

By the time she was 22,Tedeschi, who had record-ed a combination of coversand originals, was nominat-ed for a Grammy Award forbest new artist in 2000,alongside Britney Spears,Kid Rock, Macy Gray andeventual winner ChristinaAquilera.

Although Tedeschi does-n’t think the Grammys nec-essarily gauge who thebest performers are, get-ting that respect was im-portant.

“It made me realize, hey, this is a big deal — don’tfocus on anything else,”she said.

Opening for the AllmanBrothers Band, she metguitarist Derek Trucks, himself a former child per-former. They married in2001.

The performers contin-ued to have separatebands, though, even afterthey had two children.

“It was chaotic at times,”Tedeschi said. “Derek wasalways very calm and fo-cused. He’s a Jedi. I waskind of like that 22-year-oldgirl that was like, ‘I don’ttake crap from boys.’ ”

The Susan TedeschiBand had success openingfor The Rolling Stones,Bob Dylan and John Mel-lencamp.

Meanwhile, Trucks, con-sidered one of today’s topguitarists, continued to per-form with the AllmanBrothers while collaborat-ing with Eric Clapton andleading his own band, TheDerek Trucks Band.

In 2010, Tedeschi andTrucks took hiatuses fromtheir respective bands sothey could form theTedeschi Trucks Band —merging their favoritemembers from the SusanTedeschi Band and theDerek Trucks Band intoone 11-piece group.

“It really takes the pres-sure off any solo artist,”Tedeschi said.

It also makes family life alittle easier. When theirchildren, ages 12 and 10,are out of school, tours be-come summer vacations.

“We used to do zooswhen they were little,”Tedeschi said. “Now we goto baseball games. Or we’llgo on a nature walk.”

In between tours, theTedeschi Trucks Band hasput out two studio albums. Its most recent release —“Made Up Mind,” a crossbetween blues and 1970ssoul — reached No. 11 onthe Billboard Top 200 al-bum list in 2013.

While the songs on thatalbum represented a col-laboration of the bandmembers, Tedeschi saidshe hopes to contributeeven more as a writer.

“I do feel like I need towrite more and maybepresent some of my stuff tothe band more,” she said.“I’m still learning to dothat. I get kind of shy(around the other bandmembers). They’re all soamazing.”
