Just another year?

Voorwoord

Tijdens dit project ga je lezen, schrijven, luisteren, kleuren, plakken, enz. Je beleeft het afgelopen jaar opnieuw, leest wat er gebeurd is op het gebied van het wereldnieuws, sport, muziek en meer. Over elk onderdeel wordt er een opdracht gegeven. Aan het eind van elke maand wordt je gevraagd ook iets over jou persoonlijk te vertellen. Je kunt je eigen verhaal, zoveel mogelijk in het Engels, opfleuren met plaatjes en/of foto’s.

Schrik niet als de teksten wat moeilijk zijn. Je hoeft niet elk woord te begrijpen. Kijk maar goed naar de vragen. Je begrijpt vast en zeker wel waar de tekst over gaat. En als je een woord niet begrijpt: geen nood, pak een woordenboek of vraag je klasgenoot en daarna de projectbegeleider als je echt niet meer weet hoe het moet.

Als je dit project hebt, neem dan je diskman mee (als dat mag) en gebruik die

als je een luisteropdracht hebt. In het projectlokaal ligt een stapeltje cd’s, die je kunt gebruiken. Wel weer terugleggen, graag!!!!

Probeer alle vragen, als ze tenminste in het Engels gesteld worden, zoveel mogelijk ook in het Engels te beantwoorden. Als er gevraagd wordt een tekst bij een foto te schrijven, probeer dan zo origineel mogelijk te zijn.

Zorg ervoor dat je schaar, kleurpotloden en bijv. reisgidsen, muziektijdschriften, opiniebladen, enz. meeneemt. Die bladen kun je gebruiken om iets uit te knippen of over te schrijven of te kopieren. Wat je maar wilt.

Nearly 400 homes were destroyed in the fires

Authorities in the Australian capital, Canberra, have been accused of not doing enough to protect the city from bush fires which have left four people dead and thousands more homeless. Emergency crews battling the blazes which ravaged western suburbs over the weekend say they have brought the fires under control.

But firefighters have warned the blazes could be whipped up again by strong north-westerly winds and temperatures forecast to soar to 37 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit). The fires, which were sparked by lightning, were the worst in the city's history.

Nearly 400 homes were destroyed and some 2,500 residents forced to flee. Large parts of the city were left without power and there were reports of people looting.

Answers sought

Angry residents said authorities should have done more to stop the fire from reaching the city and called for an inquiry.

The fires raged out of control to the south of the city for a week before they blew into Canberra.

Some people complained that fire crews were overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the disaster and left some properties to burn down.

"We saw a few fire trucks coming down the street. But I think they must have thought, 'That one's a lost cause', and carried on to another house," said Phil Bates, a carpenter.

John Stanhope, the chief minister of the Australian Capital Territory, admitted fire crews could not cope at times.

"There are questions that need to be answered," he said. "And there perhaps are some bitter lessons there for us to learn."

Rules of Standard Play or 501

Players: Two players, or two teams of 8-9 players

Darts: Three for each player

Play:The object of Standard Play is to be the first team or player to reach zero from a starting score of 501. During his turn, a player throws three darts and subtracts his total from his previous score until he reaches zero.

This game is simple, but it becomes tricky as the players near the zero score. To win, a player not only has to reach zero exactly, but also must obtain it through a "double." For example, if a player has 18 points left, he needs to hit a double 9 in order to win. The closer each player gets to zero, the more exciting and difficult Standard Play becomes.

Standard Play can also be started from point values of 301, 601, 801, 1001 and any other value ending in 01. This is a popular game played throughout the world.
