feiten, waarschijnlijke en onwaarschijnlijke situaties.

Je gebruikt de conditional-clause (in het boek if-sentences) voor feiten,

waarschijnlijke en onwaarschijnlijke situaties.

Een if-sentences bestaat uit een hoofd- en een bijzin. In de bijzin

staat de voorwaarde en in de hoofdzin het gevolg. De volgorde maakt

niet uit. Let op! Als je begint met het gevolg, verdwijnt de komma.

3 voorbeelden

If you drop the glass on the floor, it will break.

He wouldn’t have to redo the test if he listened to the teacher.

When you mix blue with yellow, you get the colour green.

Zowel if als when kun je gebruiken. Met when geef je aan dat iets

vaker gebeurd dan wanneer je if gebruikt. Kijk nog eens naar zin 1 en 2.

Deze gebruik je voor feiten (altijd waar).

1 If I have a day off from school, I often chill with friends.

2 When the weather is nice, I walk to school.

3 If you watch TV too long, you get a headache.

Deze gebruik je voor feiten (altijd waar).

Let op! Je maakt de if-sentence for facts met de Present Simple.

1 If I have a day off from school, I often chill with friends.

2 I walk to school when the weather is nice.

3 You get a headache if you watch TV too long.

In formule is dat: [If/When + Simple Present Simple Present]

Je kunt voor likely situations alleen if gebruiken. Logisch, je hebt het over

de toekomst en je weet nog niet zeker of het gaat gebeuren.


If-sentences for likely situations

Deze gebruik je als je je voorstelt wat jij/iemand zou doen in een specifieke

situatie in de toekomst.

1 If it clears up this afternoon, I will work in the garden.

2 They will help you with your chores if you ask them nicely.

3 She won’t bring her books to school if you don’t ask her every lesson.

1 If the movie plays tonight, we will watch it.

2 They will stay at his aunt’s house this weekend if she has room for them.

3 If we finish our work now, we may go home earlier.

4 What shall we do if the swimming pool is closed?

Je kent al veel meer tijden om te spreken over de toekomst, dus naast will kun je

ook can, may en shall of de Present Continuous en to be going to gebruiken.

Niet present simple, dat is voor vaste tijden en dan gebruik je if-sentences for facts!

Let op! Je maakt de if-sentence for likely situations met de Present Simple.

is.

1 I would come to your party if I had more time this weekend.

2 He wouldn’t be playing outside all the time if he had some homework to do.

3 If we no longer had French at school, I would be happy.

4 If I were yoy, I would call him.

Bij I, he, she en it gebruik je in if-sentences for unlikely situations altijd were

in plaats van was. Kijk nog maar eens naar zin 4. let op!

Let op! Je maakt de if-sentence for unlikely situations met would en de Past Simple

Deze gebruik je als je je iets voorstelt of afvraagt wat nog geen werkelijkheid

is.

1 If I had more time this weekend, I would come to your party.

2 If he had some homework to do, he wouldn’t be playing outside all the time.

3 I would be happy if we no longer had French at school.

4 I would call him if I were you.
