Setting up the PodcasterSetting the sound level correctly

The first step in setting up your recordingenvironment is to get a good Sound Level on

your equipment. This is done to ensure thatyou do not exceed the level of sound that yourequipment can handle before it distorts thesignal and at the same time, ensuring that thesound is not too low and indistinguishable.

By adjusting the recording volume slider youshould be able to set a reasonable level veryquickly.

The way to do this is to set the Podcaster up infront of you and raise the slider control whileyou are speaking at the same level you will use

when recording. (see pages 6 & 7 for operatingsystem control, or refer to your applicationdocumentation for native instruction).

If your slider control features a graphic levelyou will be able to gauge an appropriate level

slightly below where the level reaches anoverload (typically red).

Your recording will now be set at a useful level.Experimentation with this will allow you to finetune your recordings over time.

    Talking in to your Podcaster

The Podcaster is an end address microphone. This simply means that to get the clearest

sound, you must talk directly into the front ofthe microphone as shown below. When you aretalking into the microphone you should be ableto clearly see the green status LED.

Setting up the PodcasterPositioning your Podcaster

You will find that where you position yourPodcaster will alter the quality of the sound.

Environment and background noise will varyevery time a microphone is moved to a differentlocation. The most successful method tooptimise the sound you want is to try variouspositions and isolate the recording environmentfrom external noise sources as much as possible.

Proximity ef fect is an increased bass responsewhich happens when you are close to themicrophone. This can be used in a positive wayto enhance the quality of your voice, but becareful as being too close may increase the bass

response too much which will distort the sound.

    Connecting headphones to your Podcaster

A unique feature of your Podcaster is thein-built, high level, headphone amplifier.

Simply connect the 3.5mm jack from yourheadphones, and adjust the volume control onthe microphone and you have direct monitoringof the sound from the microphone.

The advantage of connecting the headphonesdirectly to the microphone is that you are ableto hear exactly what you are recording before itis recorded. This allows for more accurate finetuning and should reduce the need to re-record

as problems can be detected earlier in therecording process.

Setting up the PodcasterMounting the Podcaster

The Podcaster comes with a stand mount thatwill allow you to connect it to a microphone

stand or Anglepoise style arm such as theRDE PSA-1.

The mount comes with a 3/8 brass insert thatcan be removed. Once removed the internalthread of the mount is a 5/8 thread. This allowsthe mount to be used on either a US 5/8 standor pole or a Euro 3/8 stand or pole.

Also on the mount is a thumb screw which whenloosened will allow the mount to rotate to enableyou to angle your microphone to the mostappropriate direction.

To mount the microphone into the clip follow thesteps below.

Remove the locking collar from the base ofthe microphone.

Slide the base of the microphone into thehole in the stand mount.

Screw the locking collar back into position tocarefully secure the Podcaster to the mount.

Now, loosen the thumbscrew on the standmount and adjust the microphone tothe desired angle. Once set, tighten thethumbscrew to secure the microphone inplace.

Setting up the PodcasterUsing the PSM-1 mount (optional)

For additional vibration isolation, the Podcastercan be fitted to the optional PSM-1 spider

shock mount. The PSM-1 is a recommendedand useful addition to any recording facilityas it significantly reduces unwanted noisetransmission to the microphone.

First screw the PSM-1 shock mount ontoyour mic stand, boom arm or Anlgepoisestyle arm. If youre using a US 5/8 micstand or boom, remove the 3/8 insert.

Remove the locking collar from the baseof the Podcaster and store it away in a safeplace where it will not get lost.

Install the Podcaster into the PSM1 by fittingthe microphone into the center of the weband onto the bottom mounting plate.

There is a captive locking collar in the centreof the shock mount which will screw onto thethread on the bottom of the Podcaster.

Rotate the captive locking collar to securethe Podcaster firmly in the shock mount.

Loosen the thumb screw on the PSM1 shockmount to adjust the angle of the Podcasterand position it to the desired location.Once set, tighten the thumbscrew to securethe Podcaster in place.

Note: Be careful not to over tighten thethumbscrew as this could cause cross threadingand the mount will not maintain the correctangle if this occurs.
