appendices.

6. In the same 2010, February, I was chosen to rank universities in Sub-Saharan Africa by

Thomson Reuters International, USA – the body that ranks universities all over the

world. This was not surprising because by 2010, one of the major publishers of my

works: “Journal of Advanced Materials, Covina, USA (A journal publishing outfit which

started in 1944) sold out my works along with others to every known virtual libraries of

the world interested in buying them. Countries scrambled for them culminating in these

works making an overwhelming presence in the internet. They (the buyers), not only

translated them into more than fifteen international languages but they also hoisted them

in endless websites some of which request as much as £9.8 payment to download any

one of these journal papers. This payment can be made by any interested researcher

using a credit card from any point online anywhere in the world.

found two of my novels: The Sin of the Flesh and A Costly Mistake very useful

for their programs which was geared at stirring-up the interest of the youth to

develop reading habit, I was invited to a series of Television appearances in the

Enugu branch of NTA from time to time. These appearances were televised

1(d) Special Achievements/Innovations

As Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNN:

– Launched out vigorous call for alumni funding. With the fund raised, total and

completed renovation of the staff offices and classrooms was achieved. This

involved re-flooring Agbebi IV with titles; replacement of windows with modern

ones; rewiring and ceiling; procurement of new writing boards; teacher-stand;

burglary proofing, painting, students desks, etc.

– Alongside this was the tireless effort to equip our laboratories, renew retired

technical and academic staff to ensure we had enough to face the then approaching

COREN accreditation. Review and production of undergraduate and graduate

academic handbooks and regulation for every student to access a copy was also

taken-up with the Vice-Chancellor. The result was a resounding full accreditation

for the Department.

– Also established a Departmental data bank of results so that in thirty years time a

former student can return to the Department, open that single book and see every

detail of his results and performance. This was prompted by subsequent loss of files

experienced recurrently as Head of Department..

As Coordinator, School of Postgraduate Studies:

– When I came on board, there was no clear distinction between the courses offered

by PGD students and those in the Masters’ Degree cadre. I got the Head of

Department to set up a committee chaired by Prof. C.I. Ezekwe (former Vice

Chancellor, ANSU Uli) and we raised courses separately for PGD students so that

their course contents and titles did not in any way merge or interfere with each

other. I also went online and down-loaded the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology course outline along with those of University of London, Cambridge

and Harvard from where we were able to establish the courses for our students.

As Coordinator, Undergraduate Degree Projects

– Raised specific topics for every final year student of the Department by requesting

every staff lecturer to send in specific minimum number of titles/topics into a joint

pool for distribution to students. The distribution involved pasting these

titles/topics in the students classroom for two weeks so that everyone of them would

Page 16: Engr. Prof. Sylvester Onyemaechi Edelugo › wp-content › uploads › ... · 2 Member, committee on the Review and Development of New Curricula for the Department of Mechanical

16

make a choice of his/her topic of interest. The topic chosen by a student

automatically determines who becomes his/her supervisor. There are two

advantages of this method: (1) It eliminates the opportunity of students lifting topics

done elsewhere and suggesting same to their supervisor – some of who maybe too

busy to raise a topic for them (2) The situation where students chose lecturers who

happen to be their friends and in the process get protected even when they have

done nothing to merit success was wiped out.

– Finally, I obtained the average scores of the lecturers during seminar/defence and

added same to supervisors scores to obtain final figures.

– I ensured that a data bank of all students projects executed in the Department was

kept and that no further repetitions of same topics were allowed in subsequent years

except for cases involving optimization.

– I raised over five hundred titles/topics before I left the office.

2. Teaching/Research
