Maybe El Paso was too successfulwhen it tore down City Halland Insights Science Museum

in the spring of 2013, and by the follow-ing spring the Chihuahuas were playingball in the new stadium. The speed of that project set a standard which veryfew, if any, local construction projectswill ever be able to match.

While Downtown observers wereamazed by the pace at which SouthwestUniversity Park rose from the demolitiondebris, they have been dismayed at theexasperating delays in the San Jacinto

Plaza renovations that began in 2013.To everyone’s relief — from

Downtown businesses that depend onplaza visitors for their livelihood toworkers seeking a place to relax andstroll during lunch to city officials tiredof fielding complaints to the contractorsthemselves who’ve been paying dailypenalties due to the delays — the plaza isnow scheduled to reopen in April. As of the date this issue went to press,

no firm date was set for the reopening, but the project manager indicated that a30-day countdown had started in mid-March in which all finishing toucheswere expected to get done.

You can read more about San JacintoPlaza and its new look in Lisa Tate’s fea-

ture story on Page 23.Hopefully the finished product willsoon erase the memories of the overdueconstruction. We’re optimistic that thenew, improved plaza is indeed “worthwaiting for” and once again will becomethe vibrant heart of Downtown.

“Faith-based” movies are enjoying a bigseason this spring — at the localCinemark, “Risen, “The YoungMessiah” and “Miracles from Heaven”were all showing simultaneously.

Despite my general skepticism of reli-gious movies, I did see “Risen” and“Miracles.” No amount of persuasion

could convince me to see “The YoungMessiah,” since the entire premise of thefilm was based on speculation aboutJesus’ life as a boy.

“Risen” combines fiction with whatwas otherwise a fairly accurate portrayal(at least in terms of the Gospel accounts)of the events following Christ’s crucifix-ion. A Roman tribune is given the taskof tracking down Jesus’ corpse butinstead (spoiler alert!) encounters therisen Christ with the apostles.

The movie doesn’t break any newground cinematically, but it made forgood Eastertide viewing. The acting, ledby Joseph Fiennes as the tribune, put it anotch above most Bible-based moviesI’ve seen.

“Miracles from Heaven” also makes avaliant effort at sticking with an estab-lished story — the true story of a 9-year-old Texas girl suffering from a chronic, incurable disease who fell 30 feet downa hollow tree and afterward was free of her painful illness. Although not serious-ly injured by her fall, she fell uncon-scious and afterward said she visitedheaven and saw Jesus.

Fortunately, the stereotypical near-death experience does not play a majorrole in the film. In fact, the girl’s seem-

ingly miraculous healing is almost anti-climactic. To the film’s credit, it reliesmore on the drama of a loving family —in particular the mother, played byJennifer Garner — dealing with a child’slife-threatening illness.

What made this movie rise above thetypical religious fare is that it backsaway from making special claims aboutthe girl’s inexplicable healing or hernear-death vision. Instead, it points outall the acts of love that surrounded theyoung girl along the way — from caringparents to dedicated doctors to variousstrangers who went out of their way tohelp, like the proverbial GoodSamaritan.

For me, the ideal “faith-based” moviechallenges me with a story that raiseissue of belief but doesn’t hit me overthe head with preaching.

That’s why I will avoid the upcoming“God’s Not Dead 2,” because I have notrecovered from my theological nauseathat resulted from the first film — whichended conveniently with the atheisticantagonistic recanting his disbelief as hebreathed his last breath.
