Stainless Steel Standard Weights The National Bureau of Standards has developed a stainless steel for standard weights. It has the advan- tage of being corrosion-resistant, non- magnetic, and with a density of 8.4 g/cm. 8 It overcomes the problem of tarnishing in brass which results in weight changes. The problem of at- taining the desired density was over- come by use of an alloy of nickel, 32.4%; chromium, 16.2%; tungsten, 9.9%'; manganese, 1.7%; silicon, 1.55%; and carbon, 0.09%». It has a density of 8.42 g/cm. 3 and a magnetic permeability of 1.008. A steel with a density of 8.0 g/cm. 3 has also been de- veloped. The 8.0 density has been pro- posed as an international standard.
