Girls Basketball Training currently underway for a 1st year league and an under 14 league which began in April - both to be held in the college. Seniors had a friendly match against Kanturk recently. Well done Well done to all the students involved in Football, Hurling, Basketball and Ladies Soccer over the past term.A very successful term was had by all in the sports fields on West Cork. Garda Commissioner presents annual awards A GROUP of students recently presented a cheque for €1,140 to Elma O’Mahony and Richard Jennings from St. Vincent de Paul, Clonakilty. This money was collected during a Christmas carol service in Wilton. Cheque presentation to SVDP THE ‘Time To Shine’ extravaganza opened its doors on Thursday, 28th February, as part of the transition year enterprise programme. The transition year students worked really hard to provide a very professional show for the general public of Clonakilty. The 18 acts from all years played to a full house. It was tremendous success. There were bands, comedians, gymnasts, beat boxers and dancers. Everyone had a fantastic night. Deirdre Archibold, the ‘You’re A Star’ contestant, made a surprise appearance and performed a great version of the old Dusty Springfield track ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’. Once all the acts had performed the audience voted for their favourite act. The audiences favourite were the ‘3 Wingers’, who were three students from Rang Phádraig - Kevin O’Dwyer, Eoin O’Sullivan and Greg Singleton. They wooed the audience with their rendition of ‘Irelands Call’. There were also judges in the audience and their three favourite acts were Shane Doonan, Chris Hayes and John Kingston. All winners received prizes. Many thanks were expressed to teachers and mentors and the community sponsors especially Harte’s Eurospar. The band performed with The City of Cork Male Voice Choir, one of the best choirs in Munster. Compliments have been pouring in from all quarters since the concert, and people are astounded by the high musical standard that has been achieved by the band in recent years. Musical numbers from the band such as ‘Mack The Knife’,‘Jamaican Calypso’ and music from ‘Braveheart’, enabled the band to show what a great repertoire of music the band now possess. Gerard Condon, Musical Director of St. Patrick’s Brass Band, is the man to thank for the success of the band to date. Gerard is a VEC outreach tutor from the County Cork School of Music and his professional commitment to this group of young musicians is outstanding.A very special thank you to the students from the Community College and the other schools in the Clonakilty area, who play with the band, for the many hours they spend practicing for such concerts and events throughout the year. Parents and guardians of band members need to be complimented as well, for their assistance and support of the band over the last number of years.The band is going on tour to Germany in July 2008 and so we wish them all the best with this venture! Team B - Colm O’Sullivan,Conor Hayes, David Ryan and Ruairí Courtney - were placed joint third, while Team A - Sam Kingston, James Horan, Seamus Poillot and Andrew Flynn - came in the top ten out of a total of 45 teams. Well done to both teams on their impressive scores and team performance. Schools’ Environmental Quiz 2008 Further Education College, Clonakilty is offering two PLC courses for 2008/2009 in: 1. BUSINESS STUDIES/ COMPUTING 2. HAIRDRESSING The courses are suitable for those Wishing to return to the workforce Wishing to learn new skills or update existing skills Gap Year students Wanting to meet new people 1. Business Studies/ Computing Runs daily from 9.30 to 1.30, Mon - Fri. Previous experience of computers and/or business is not required. Upon successful completion students receive a FETAC Level 5 and an ECDL Certificate. 2. Hairdressing Consists of three days college and two days in a local salon each week. Certificates from FETAC, City and Guilds and Trades exams. Information booklets and application forms are available from the college by phoning 023/33877. Grants are available to qualifying candidates. At present the college is investigating the possibility of running additional course such as Beauty Care and Child Care , anyone interested should contact the college. ON Saturday, February 23rd, in FernhillHouse Clonakilty, over 250 peopleattended the annual fundraising concertof St Patrick’s Brass Band, Clonakilty.The band performed with The City ofCork Male Voice Choir, one of the bestchoirs in Munster.

Compliments have been pouring in from allquarters since the concert, and people areastounded by the high musical standard that hasbeen achieved by the band in recent years.

Musical numbers from the band such as ‘MackThe Knife’, ‘Jamaican Calypso’ and music from‘Braveheart’, enabled the band to show what agreat repertoire of music the band nowpossess.

• Visits to local Gaelscoil continue - a very positive benefits for students.

• 20 students availed of a full day programme on Web technology at Tralee IT.

• A very successful week of outdoor pursuits was enjoyed by all TY students abseiling, kayaking,hill-walking and camping were just some of the activities involved. Many memories were made.

• Many students availed of Safe Pass course last term.• An FAI coaching course was organised for April.

The course consisted of 8 hours tuition after which students had to demonstrate skills mastered to obtain the FETAC recognised certificate.

• AIB Build A Bank competition took place on March 11th. Well done to students involved.

• Visits continue to our local district court. Students are accompanied by local solicitor and the proceedings are observed.

• We congratulate our TY students on their successful presentation of ‘Time To Shine’.

• A series of lectures which ran for a week,

beginning 14th April, took place at CIT on Science and Technology. Ten of our TY students participated in this popular and insightful event.

• A UDC organised event began in April whereby 20 students were involved in designing and producing a garden in a designated area in Clonakilty.

• Well done to our HOPE volunteers who travelled to help the street children of Calcutta on 5th April - Kate Wilson, Tanya Flynn, Paul Moore & Luke Read.

• Well done to our new tuck shop team this term - Tanya Flynn, Conor Langfield, Michale O’Driscoll and Ian McDermott.

‘Time To Shine’ a resounding success

Enterprise Day a huge successON April 30th, transitions year students PeterLane, Colin Smith, Eanna Tyrrell and GarethBoohig organised an enterprise day. This wasa huge success.

It was held in the Quality Hotel andapproximately one hundred students attendedthis event. Six speakers from various locationsin West Cork two of whom were past pupilscame to speak about setting up their ownbusinesses.

• Kieran White (Java Republic Coffee)spoke about staying focused on yourbusiness and they importance of work/lifebalance.• Kevin O’Regan (Kirby Shoes). Kevinspoke about taking over a business and theimportance of bringing your own ideas tothe business.• Mella McAuley (Mella’s Fudge)explained how she has turned a hobbyfrom secondary school into a full timebusiness.• Alan Kingston (Glenilen Farm) told usabout the importance pricing a product anddeveloping your business from year to year.

• Vivian Fogarty (Davidas Bar) explainedthat of her time spent in Spain and her lovefor Spanish culture was the main reasonsshe set up a Spanish tapas bar.• Avril Allshire (Caherbeg Sausages) spokeabout the importance of sourcing your

supplies locally such that customers haveconfidence in your product.

The money that was raised on the day wasdivided between two charities Marie KeatingCancer Foundation and a past student DeclanMurphy’s Just One, a charity based in Nepal.

THE Green Schools Committee hasbeen very busy in the school this year.The highlight of the year has been theawarding of the school’s third GreenFlag at a ceremony in the Lifetime Labin Cork on Wednesday, March 5th,2008. The flag was presented toEamonn Ryan and Damien Allen, boththird years’ students.

At the ceremony, Teddy Browne whois the litter warden for the West Corkarea, was fulsome in his praise for theschool. He paid particular tribute to thestudents whose efforts at creating abetter environment in the school andthe surrounding areas of Inchydoneyand Owenahincha through their annualcleanup were very much appreciated.

Mr Browne also paid tribute to therole of teachers such as MarianO’Leary and Niall O’Rourke for theirefforts in this regard as well. The factthat the Community College wasreceiving its third flag and had adoptedtwo local beaches won huge applausefrom the large crowd present at theceremony.

An Taisce praised the part thatprincipals in all of the schools play inallowing the development of the Greenschools programme to flourish.
