Ullrich wants to continue this winning streak. However, the

challenge this time around is bigger than ever before, with

Audi aiming to become the first automobile manufacturer

to claim an outright Le Mans victory with a Diesel engine.

That this target is extremely ambitious, but in

no way unrealistic, which was proven by Audi in

March when the new R10 TDI won the 12-hour race

at Sebring (USA) first time out on its db ut an

impressive demonstration of Audi TDI Power.

The chance to write motorsport history

Audi has already won the legendary 24 Hours of

Le Mans five times with the R8. If you include the

Bentley victory during the 2003 season with the

Speed 8, for which Audi Sport developed the TFSI

engine, then Audi technology is unbeaten at the

worlds most demanding car race since 2000.

Technical Development ensures the technology transfer

from motorsport to production vehicles and vice versa.

DTM and R10 TDI to run parallel

Every project initiated by Audi Sport so far has

lead to victories or even championship titles.

Trying to be successful in both the DTM and with

the project of the new Audi R10 TDI diesel sportscar

at the same time is not only logistically a big

challenge the double mission also demands

    maximum performance from all employees.

Audi R10 TDI made by Audi Sport

Just like all new Audi race cars the R10 TDI was also

developed by Audi Sport. The Audi Sport headquarters

is located in Ingolstadt, where the majority of the

near 150-member squad works. From Ingolstadt,

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich coordinates the motorsport

commitments of AUDI AG and the Lamborghini and

SEAT divisions, which are part of the Audi brand

group. Since 1993 the native Austrian has been Head

of Audi Motorsport and Head of Audi Sport.

the worlds first diesel engine with direct injection

and complete electronic engine management for

use in passenger cars a five-cylinder TDI producing

120 hp and 265 Newton metres torque. It was the

birth of the revolutionary TDI technology which

helped the diesel to change its image: Slow, loud and

uncultivated were superseded by agile, comfortable

and extremely economical. The Audi TDI brought

TDI Power for racing from the inventors of TDI

That Audi is the worlds first automobile manufacturer

to compete for overall victory at the legendary

24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel engine and is,

as a result, a step ahead of the competition is

almost self-explanatory: Audi is the inventor of the

TDI and therefore the trend setter in this area.

At the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi presented

With the R10 TDI, Audi brings TDI Power to the race track which today can be found in every second Audi road car (the A8 4.2 TDI is pictured)

Sport. TDI-Technology was never pushed to its limits in

racing. Audi is the first automobile manufacturer to have

accepted the challenge. In addition, the Audi R10 TDI

is the first sportscar that was developed in accordance

with the new ACO (Automobile Club de lOuest) LM P1

regulations. Thats why the Audi Sport technicians did not

only have to prepare themselves for the peculiarities of TDI

Technology, but also to exploit the specifications dictated

by the new regulations, in order to set new benchmarks

The greatest challenge for Audi Sport to date

A first glance at the ne w Audi R10 TDI, which

celebrated a victorious debut at the 12-hour race in

Sebring in March, reveals the family genes of the

super successful R8 predecessor. It is not only the

engine in the R10 TDI that is a new development.

Audi went new ways in the design of the chassis.

Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich de scribes

the task of developing a Diesel sportscar for the 24 Hours

of Le Mans as the greatest challenge ever trusted to Audi

The LED rear-lights in the R10 TDI originate from the production line, the aerodynamics were also fine-tuned at the Audi Wind Tunnel centre

to reduce downforce by approximately 15 per cent, the

Audi Sport technicians managed to compensate for the

majority of the aerodynamic-efficiency lost as a result.

The R10 TDI stands five centimetres lower than its

predecessor and has a significantly more pointed nose.

This led to a significant weight saving when

compared with the R8, which is of particular

importance because the V12 engine is longer and

heavier that the V8 power unit fitted to the R8.

    Refined aerodynamics

The R10 TDI aerodynamic configuration is even more

polished. Although the new LM P1 regulations aimed

Full power produced almost at idling speed

Audi demonstrates impressively just how much potential

exists in TDI Technology with the Audi R10 TDI. Audi

extracts over 650 hp and more than 1100 Newton metre

torque from 5.5 litres. As a result, the V12 TDI is the

worlds specifically most powerful Diesel engine.

Audi wishes to increase its advantage in the TDI sector and

accelerate TDI Technology through its Diesel motorsport

programme. With regard to fuel consumption,

    environmental friendliness, combustion process and

other new technologies we expect an enormous push

over the forthcoming years, says Ulrich Baretzky, Head

of Engine Technology at Audi Sport. We have remained

relatively close to the findings of our colleagues from

production, since we have broken completely new

ground for motorsport. Later, I think that we will be

able to repay the production department with the

things we developed specifically for motorsport.

to a total of 17 Le Mans victories. Tom Kristensen,

with seven Le Mans victories to his name and

six in succession, spearheads the team.

Kristensen competes together with Dindo Capello

and Allan McNish, who won in this formation on the

Audi R10 TDI dbut at Sebring. The other R10 TDI with

defending American Le Mans Series Champions Frank

    Strong driving squad

It goes without saying that we needed very experienced

Six established drivers at the wheel of the R10 TDI

Audi aims to achieve its ambitious target as the first

automobile manufacturer to win the legendary

24 Hours of Le Mans with a Diesel engine with a

high-calibre driver squad. The pair of Audi R10 TDI

prototypes are driven by Frank Biela (D), Dindo Capello

(I), Tom Kristensen (DK), Allan McNish (GB), Emanuele

Pirro (I) and Marco Werner (D) each and every one

an established seasoned campaigner, who have all

demonstrated their driving abilities at the wheel ofthe Audi R8 over the course of the last few years.

What do you do in your spare time? Cycling as training

for the races. I really enjoy it. In addition to this come

my hobbies Golf and radio-controlled model aircraft.

Where do you go on holiday? I actually stay at home,

since I travel enough as it is. When we do travel

then its usually in search of sea, sand and sun.

What sort of music do you particularly like to listento? Actually everything that is currently in trend. Im

not afraid of some Hard Rock now and again either.

Whats your favourite dish? Pasta and Sushi.

What would you have liked to have been if

you hadnt become a racing driver? Racing

driver was my dream job. Otherwise I would

probably have been a mechanical engineer.

What do you particularly like and dislike about being

a racing driver? The great attraction is the racing

and the competition, but also developing new cars.

certainly didnt become a racing driver to be the

focus of attention. The media hubbub was, and

still isnt my thing, but its all part of the game.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

I think that my greatest strength is also my

    greatest weakness: Im very self-critical.

Which is your favourite Audi? The new Audi R8 for the road.

I was immediately impressed when I saw it for the first time.

What do you do in your spare time?I spend the majority of

my spare time with my family and doing fitness training.

Where do you go on holiday? To southern Italy, where

there are so many beautiful areas, some of which

I have never visited even though Im Italian.

What sort of music do you particularly like to listen to?

I like Italian singers like Eros Ramazotti or Vasco Rossi, but also the current international Pop and Rock music.

Whats your favourite dish? Pasta with tomatoes!

What would you have liked to have been if you

hadnt become a racing driver? A surgeon.

What do you particularly like and dislike about being a

racing driver?I actually like everything about motorsport.

Sometimes the only thing that bothers me is that I

cant actually spend as much time at home as Id like to

because of the many PR and Marketing appointments.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?Im a

positive thinker, which has helped during difficult times

in the past. One weakness is that I think too much aboutmotorsport and thats why I cant enjoy life so much.

Which is your favourite Audi? The new Audi Q7 is

fantastic, but I drive an Audi A6 Avant which is

the best-looking Audi in my eyes. By the way, Ive

been driving a Diesel privately for ten years.

What do you do in your spare time? Apart from spending

time with my family, I enjoy riding my mountain bike and

other bicycle as well as sports with my friends.

Where do you go on holiday? In winter I take

a sports holiday in Lanzarote. In Denmark

I go to Skagen, in the northern part of the

country. We have a summer house there.

What sort of music do you particularly like to listen to?

In the past few years, Denmark has come up with some

very good rock music. At the moment I enjoy listening

to what the new generation is coming up with.

Whats your favourite dish? While I was in Japan, I

couldnt get too excited about Japanese food. In the

meantime Ive become a real fan.

What would you have liked to have been if you hadnt

become a racing driver? Everyone knows that I completed

a bank apprenticeship. Surely I would have become

the best and fastest armoured car driver in Europe.

What do you particularly like and dislike about being a

racing driver? The best thing is being part of the team,

improving myself and being able to show this to everyone

on the track. Spending so much time in airplanes andhotels is something I no longer enjoy as much as I used to.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? Im

very motivated and enjoy what I do. A weakness is that

people sometimes dont understand my Danish sense of

    humour.

Whats your favourite Audi? The Audi R8 obviously.

What do you do in your spare time? Anything

to relax. However, since 9 May 2005 my son

has absorbed almost all my time.

Where do you go on holiday? Being Scottish, somewhere

where its warmer. However, I also love skiing.

What sort of music do you particularly like to listen

to? I have a wide cross-section of tastes here.At the moment I like listening to the Black Eyed

Peas and the Scottish Band Franz Ferdinand.

Whats your favourite dish? Japanese I

love the freshness and taste of Sushi.

What would you have liked to have been if you

hadnt become a racing driver? An astronaut

but because of my family background I would

more likely have been a farmer or car dealer

What do you particularly like and dislike about being a

racing driver? Its a fantastic feeling to win races. Generally

I enjoy working in a team together with good people

and to be better than the others. This is the attraction of

sportscars. I dont like politics which is not a question at

Audi Sport, but is has been at some stages in my career.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

I know exactly what I want. As a racing driver I

    obviously have no weaknessesBut seriously:

Somebody else will have to answer this.

Which is your favourite Audi? My first RS 4.

of sport to keep myself fit and take care of my

businesses. I also started flying a year ago.

Where do you go on holiday? In the summer to Sardinia,

in the winter in the mountains to Cortina dAmpezzo.

What sort of music do you particularly

like to listen to? It depends entirely on the

atmosphere, but more often than not Rock.

Whats your favourite dish? Pasta, my favourite

is spaghetti with mussels. I also like Sushi.

What would you have liked to have been if you

hadnt become a racing driver? An engineer.

What do you particularly like and dislike about being

a racing driver? I actually like everything about it: the

driving, the technology, the competition, and always

having to improve. I dont see any negative aspects.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

My determination and knowing that you can always learn

something new. My weakness is that Im too polite.

Which is your favourite Audi? The new road going Audi

R8 Ive driven it already and thought it was fantastic.

What do you do in your spare time? When I have time

I enjoy playing golf or spend time gardening.

Where do you go on holiday? To El Gouna in Egypt.

What sort of music do you particularly like to listen to?

Strictly speaking Soul, but since I received a set of drums

for my birthday things are a little more Rock and Roll.

Whats your favourite dish? Italian or Sushi.

What would you have liked to have been if you hadnt

become a racing driver? A golf professional.

What do you particularly like and dislike about

being a racing driver? The best thing is that you

get the chance to drive very special cars that

not everybody can drive. What I dont like is that

things dont run quite as Id like in motorsport.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

I think that my greatest strength is my composure.

Its difficult to throw me off course. However, this

is possibly also my greatest weakness, because

I should have been a little more agressive in

my career to get further up t he ladder.

Which is your favourite Audi? Both have a number 8 in

their names: Im fascinated by the road going A8. And

since I celebrated my greatest and most meaningful

successes with the R8 this is (still) my favourite race car.

Le Mans the Race of the Year

For Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich,

the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the greatest motorsport

challenge and one of only three races a round the

world also known by people who have little or no

interest at all in motorsport. The other two are the

Indianapolis 500 and the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.

Also widely known in the USA

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a worldwide media event

and one of the few motorsport events that not only

boasts broad recognition in Europe and Asia but also

in North America. In the USA, where Formula 1 is still regarded as a fringe sport, the 24 Hours of Le Mans

enjoys a particularly high ranking. The famous film Le

Mans starring Steve McQueen made a worthwhile

contribution to this popularity. The American Le

A special feature of Le Mans and the race series derived

from Le Mans is the fact that vehicles representing

four different classes compete in the same race

but are classified separately. Indisputably, the LM

P1 category is the top class. It allows the engineers

great scope and is therefore currently the most

interesting motorsport category. No other class offers

an automobile manufacturer so many possibilities

to implement new technology and to test these for

    Le Mans celebrates 100th birthday

The 74th running of the 24 Heures du Mans is a very

    Permanently online

When the Audi R10 TDI reels off laps around Le

Mans, it is in permanent radio contact with the

pits. The most important data from the moving car

is transmitted by telemetry and monitored by the

technicians. Theoretically, up to 500 channels can be

transmitted; the readability of data sets the limits. As

a rule, three engineers per car monitor data displayed

on computer screens at Le Mans. During testing

there are almost 100 sensors in the Audi R10 TDI and

between 60 and 70 during the race at Le Mans.

    The telemetry prevents accidents

It is not only engine data that is transmitted by

telemetry, the suspension data is recorded permanently

Every movement of the R10 TDI is transmitted by radio to the pits

The display on the wheel of the Audi R10

TDI is similar to the MMI system used in

Audi road cars delivering all important

    data to the driver

    A very special tyre test

Le Mans cultivates competition also in the

tyre sector. In 2005 five tyre manufacturers

fought for victory. The competition in the 2006

24 Hours of Le Mans will be just as hard.

High demands made of the tyre manufacturer

The demands made of the tyre manufacturer at Le Mans

are particularly high. Apart from the dimensions, the

tyres are free from limiting regulations. This means that,

in theory, bespoke tyres can be developed for every

car. Every tyre manufacturer takes a variety of models

and compounds to Le Mans. This includes special wet

weather rain tyres, so-called intermediates that

are used when the circuit conditions are mixed, and a

whole range of different slick, dry weather tyres.

    Five different slick versions

Michelin, who supplied tyres for the R8 project and is

again an exclusive tyre partner to Audi for the R10 TDI,

remains unbeaten over the last eight years at Le Mans.

Normally, Michelin has five different versions of slick

tyre available for the 24-hour race: a standard tyre

(medium), a hard tyre (hard) for very hot weather,

a soft tyre (soft) which is normally used in the cool

of the night and two so-called qualifiers, which act

as jokers in the fight for pole-position. One version is

Every change must be perfect over 24 hours

Whoever wants to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans needs

a fast and reliable car, the best drivers and a well

rehearsed pit-stop crew, because any time lost in

the pits is very difficult to recover on the track.

Refuelled on average every 50 minutes

Dependent of its fuel consumption, an LM P1 comes

in to the pits approximately every 50 minutes. Over

the 24-hour distance this equates to almost 30

scheduled pit stops, during which the fuel tank is

refilled with Shell V-Power Diesel. Tyres and drivers are

changed as seldom as possible. The ACO regulations

prohibit simultaneous refuelling and working on the

car. Therefore, changing tyres costs extra time.

    Refuelling takes almost 30 seconds

Every pit stop at Le Mans starts with refuelling, which

takes almost 30 seconds until 90 litres are in the Audi

R10 TDI fuel cell. Diesel flows a little slower than petrol

because of different viscosity, which is why the regulations

allow a 38 millimetre diameter Flow Restrictor instead

of the normal 33 millimetre version, ensuring that the

diesel and petrol engine cars take about the same time

to refuel. Pressure assisted refuelling is prohibited.

with his seventh win in 2005

seventh win in the French long-distance classic.

Seven times at the finish, every time a winner

Tom Kristensens list of results at L e Mans is unique: To

date, the Audi factory driver has started nine times in the

24-hour classic, and has reached the finish on seven

occasions every time as winner. Kristensen

is unbeaten at Le Mans since 2000. He scored

four of his seven victories with the Audi R8

An invention for the road. Revolutionised for

the race track. The Audi R10 TDI runs at the

24 Hours of Le Mans under this motto, which

impressively underlines the innovative powers of

Audi in the area of diesel power units. In addition,

the Le Mans programme for the 650 hp Diesel power

plant presents a unique opportunity to convince

new customers of TDI Technologys merits.

Thats why the factory entry at Le Mans is accompanied

by an extensive advertising campaign for TDI Power, which purposely highlights the link between production

and motorsport. Audi invented TDI, revolutionised

this technology for the race track and will extract even

more from TDI Technology in the future thanks to

the knowledge gleaned from the Le Mans project.

As was the case with quattro drive and TSFI Technology

the Audi customer benefits once again from involvement

in motorsport. The technology transfer is represented

in a particularly interesting and vivid manner in a

TV advert for TDI Power, in which an Audi R10 TDI is

borne from an Audi A4 in time-lapse photography.

More than 25 years of success in motorsport

To implement such an ambitious project like the worlds

first diesel-powered sports car, which can fight for

overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le M ans, a high-calibre

team is required. For more than 25 years, Audi Sport has

guaranteed that Audi races from victory to victory and also

demonstrates Vorsprung durch Technik in motorsport.

    Every project a winning project

The Audi R10 TDI, developed in conjunction with

trusted and proven partners, is also completelydeveloped by Audi Sport under the direction of Head

of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. His squad

of 150 employees are principally responsible for the

development and testing of the racing cars. Every

project previously undertaken by Audi Sport was

rewarded with a victory or championship titles.

    From motorsport to production

For Audi its motorsport programme is more than

a marketing instrument: The AUDI AG motorsport

successes were always linked with ground breaking

developments, which were later adopted in to mass

production. The best examples of this are quattro

drive, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary

and revolutionised the rally world at the beginning of

the 1980s, and TFSI technology which was used for the

first time in the 2001 24 Hours of Le Mans and remainsunbeaten in the French long-distance since then. In

the meantime, TFSI is just as likely to be found in

Audis sporting production models as quattro drive.

    The Audi R10

    TDI builds on the

    success of its

    predecessor. The

    Audi R8 has won 62
