From 18th century Quakers who wouldn ' t take o ff t h e i r hat s to KingGeorge unt i l modern journal is ts who dared to expose the faults of thehighest off ic ia l s in the land, the American ideal has been tha t a l lpeople a re c re ate d equal . But sometimes we carry the idea that "nobody'sbet ter than me" too far . U.S. News & World Report said that a frequentcause of stress in people today is the diminished loyalty to one 's monarchor leader. We become cr i t ica l of everyone and slow to honor anyone, evenGod. The Bible however commands us to "outdo one another in showinghonor" (Rom. 12:10, alternative reading).

Chinese Chris t ians , xdio are immersed in the count less Confucian rulesof politeness and piety, are helping me learn the ar t of "showing honor".For example, I jus t re ce iv ed th e below l e t t e r , not addressed to me butsimply t i t led , "Prayer to the Heavenly Father".

Dear Heavenly Fathers DATEDWE praise a l l tha t You accomplish in our midst.WE are grateful to You f or a ss en ti ng to our pet i t ions;for graciously helping? 1. church offerings exceed fl,000 inOctober and $1,400 in November; 2. our bro thers and s i s t e r shave the vision of being a self-sustaining congregation;3. Brother Peter Wong and Sister Holly Ho to be husband and

    wife ; ... 5 . L i f e ' s Batfic Conf l i c t s Seminar to be he ld inHong Kong again; 6. Sister Chan to have enough strength tocomplete her examinat ion .

    WE now for the brothers and s i s te rs , fr iends and familiesof th e church earnestly beg, Father, that you graciously help:1. Brother W. H. Chan in the temptations that he meets in hiswork; 2. Sis t e r S. I , Law's health and church l i f e ; 3. Mr.Anderson's pioneering work in Tuen Mun; 4. th e spiri tual needso f bro the r s and s i s t e r s

WE also for the church work earnestly beg, Father, thatYou graciously helps 1. the church board's work; ... 3. toa rrange each'Sunday 's speaker s; 4. the Sunday School teachers;. . . 11. Tuen Mun, Mei Foo and Wong Tai Sin congregations;13. open a door of evangelism into China ...Respec t fu l ly ,

Y o u r ChildrenRather than a chatty newsletter, they glorified God and expressedtheir dependence on Him, The reader could thus take part in worshippingGod with them. I recently received another Chinese letter asking me to

speak . It s a id :D e a r Sirt. . . We have always admired the ardent preaching of you,our most excel lent peer, a reputed in te l lectual , so we usethis special lat ter to cordial ly inv ite you to honor us withyour presence is the evening speaker a t the appointed time ...delicate distinction in choice of words and intonation is all that

separates f lat ter and honor. Flattery reveals hypocrisy, bu t showing honorreveals love. So le t us not shy away from "outdoing one another in showinghonor" Just because there are a few f la t te rers ."Qlve me l i be r ty o r dea th"

Yesterday morning shortly before Xarrived ft Ou tei^^llage tohold services, some village children vent detm lfo tl^i %eaeftithey discovered a body th^t had washed onto the shore* One boy said I t wasthe third one he had seen* The beach is a two-to-three mile s^o from thenearest point in Oommunlst Chin*' Three more bodies and a h^lfdo8eiiskeletons were found today on a small is and farther out* Scores of people, maybe even hundreds die the same way eve y year in the waters around HongKong*Last week twelve people hijacked a Communist lunk and foroed I t to ta i lto Hong Kong* They landed about 200 yards from our home*Two weeks ago 100 people took a large Junk from CoBaunlst China to thedock about a qwipter^of anntla froffl'our home* ilO of these ware captured byHong Kong police. The others must be hiding here and therei trying to findfood, clothing, Jobs and to establish local identities*Today 34 more were captured across the street from our house ^ l l et ry ing to sneak in to Hong Kong*

I^m not sure how bad condi t ions In China under Communist tyranny are ,but obviously they are bad enough that this year 10,000 to 20,000 peoplewill abandon their families and belongings and run the risk of losing theirlives in order to t ry and reach Hong Kong* I would probably do the same Int h e i r s i t u a t i on*Three -fourths o f Hong Kong* s people escaped here from China or aredirect descendants of escapees, but the Hong Kong government (not democratic)doesn*t welcome refugees any more* I f escapees are caugh t, they are immediately deported, and any local citizen who helps them can be punished witha s t i f f fine and two years in Jail*Yet Hong Kong*s people are resis t ing these laws* Only one In tenescapees are ever caught* The rest

Mei Foe Christian Church, where Wayfull Jew pastors, put on a Christmas concertfor the villagers of Lung Gu Taan. Over 80 people attended including several hecklers.Afterwards some of the choir members mentioned that they were prepared for a negativeaudience but didn't expect the hostility to be so open. They said that now they knewbe t t e r how to pray fo r us.

About 12 children regularly attend our Sunday school, but Chinese New Year fellon Sunday this year, and the drivers who normally take us to the village took theday off, so we had no way to get there and hold services. All of the Christian young people who helped us start these services have quit

helping expect the leader Ng Ful who says that he will be satisfied if a churchdevelops in two or three years. I praise pod for his faithfulness. We plan to add regular youth meetings soon and also start a Bible study in our

home to rea ch those around us .CHINA IS CHANGING

English spellings of all Chinese names are changing so that pronunciationmore closely matches spoken Chinese. For example, Peking will be Beijin.173 more Chinese words (characters) were just simplified, making a total ofover 2,000 that are easier to write and learn than the traditional script used inHong Kong and Taiwan. Thus, someone can write the same amount of information as aHong Kong Chinese in half the time. Unfortunately, they won't be able to read anything written in traditional script. So all Christian literature has to be resetand reprinted, and we have to learn how to read the new script.China plans to send 40,000 of its best students to U.S. universities over

th e n ex t ten ye a r s .Foreign technicians can work and live inside China.Overseas Chinese and foreigners can even own land on a limited basis inside

Ch i n a .ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE GATHERED BEFORE HIM: AND HE WILL SEPARATE THEM FROM ONE ANOTHER. . , THEN THE KING WILL SAY TO THOSE ON HIS RIGHT, "COME, YOU WHOM MY FATHERBLESSES, ...FOR I WAS SICK, AND YOU VISITED ME.

Karl Menninger said of Menninger Psychiatric Clinic, "The patients in thishospital .are here either because they have never been loved, or have never learnedto love, or both."Recently I visited a patient in the minimum security ward of Hong Kong s mainpsychiatric hospital. I met an overworked doctor and saw many listless patientswith nothing to do all day, every day. Several patients wanted to talk to me. Onepatient was a tall, handsome, young man. He had gone to a fine school. I asked b^wlong he had been there. Over one year. Did his family ever visit him? Never. Thi^i t hit me that in this 80-man ward, I was the only visitor. If I hadn t gone, theywouldn't have had any visitors that day. I wonder how many days are like that...

That same week, a f ine leader a t Mong Kok Church o f Chr is t had lung surgery inanother hosp i ta l . He however was surrounded by Chris t ian love. When the churchmembers vis i t ed him, the hospi tal s t a f f exclaimed that never had so many peoplewanted to v i s i t one person before . St i l l , he would appreciate your prayers , for heis not out of danger yet , and he has a long road of recovery.THEN THE KING WILL SAY TO THOSE ON HIS LEFT, "DEPART FROM ME, DOOMED ONES, INTOETERNAL F IRE . . .FOR I WAS A STRANGER, AND YOU DID NOT TAKE ME IN:"

Crammed together on an old f re ighter for 28 days in unsanitary condi tions onra t ions in the middle of winter , 3,400 babies and inf irmed e lder ly , expectant mothersand army co lonel s, ch il dren and lawyers, shopkeepers and doctors and even the re la t ivesof Americans were kept a t bay outs ide Hong Kong while the n atio ns o f the world rummaged around for excuses to keep from taking them in . Final ly , these unwantedpeople wrote th is p et it io n to the ship's captain:

"We escaped from the cruel communist regime of Vietnam, and on our voyage werefortunate enough to have been rescued from cer ta in death by you and your brave crew.During th e past month, you and your crew made great sacr if ices , and even shared yourfood evenly with us. We made good our escape, mas te r, and we will never forget yourhelp . ' '

" . . . For the sake of the 3,000-strong refugees on th e sh ipto a l lev ia te ourpains, which could not have bben further deepened, we again ask you to give us morehelp and make your greatest sacrif ice. Please sa i l the ship into Hong Kong!

". . .possibly you wil l be given the severest penalty. I f you are willing tosacr i f ice yourself because of your noble character, a l l we refugees on board wil lshare the burden of the worst consequences. We, with our names and even our l ives ,give you this pledge that we would shoulder a ll the charges on your behalf . . .

" . . .F inal ly , we offer you ou r greatest respect. . . . Now we are also kneeling onthe deck to pray to God for you, and to plead for God's help to save us from destitution.Signed by 600 heads of refugee families, 1/17/1979.As of this writing, another ship s i t s in a similar predicament in Manila's harbor.I t ' s useless to point the f inger and say what other nations responsibil i t ies to theserefugees are. The issue i s : As Christ ian Americans, what are your and my responsibi l i t ies?The Consul General in Hong Kong informed me tha t Congress l imited the number ofIndo-Chinese refugees who may enter America to one million, and they are afraid therewill be more refugees than that . So i t seems to me that they are slow to take refugeesso they can keep under one mill ion. Surely Christ ians have a responsibi l i ty to ask

Congress to lift t h a t l im i t .The major re l ief organ iz at ion said that the big problem is finding wil l ing org an iz at io ns in America who wil l sponsor refugees, which often includes paying the i r

plane fare . Most organizat ions are f inancia l ly hard-pressed. Surely Chris t iansought to conscient ious ly as s i s t such organ iza t ions .AND THESE WILL GO AWAY INTO ETERNAL PLmSHMENT, BUT THE RIGHTEOUS INTO ETERNAL LIFE.

mm RESt J^^nuMI was memorizing th e Eas te r story in Cantonese during Easter week. ThatWednesday was the day Chinese tra^tionally pay homage to their deceased ances

tors (a f i t t ing prelude to Easter) . So I went to Lung Gu Taan in hopes o flearning more about the make-up of the vil lage and the i r bel iefs . And indeedI d id .Thou^ they are a l l related, they do not a l l worship the same ancestor. The vil lage is divided into dis t inct factions. In fact , pract ical ly a l l thosewho attend our services are frcm jus t one faction, descendants of one ancestor.

Moreover, ancestor worship in th is faction has degenerated considerably.Adults didn ' t bother to go to the grave. They paid the children and young peopleto go. No one seemed to know the name o f the ancestor or his relat ion to themeven t hou^ he had only been dead a few decades. Only a half-hearted effor t wasmade to c lea r weeds off the grnve; and as they paid honage, they indicated hows i l ly they thought it a l l was. Yet none appeared ashamed of thei r behavior. Theyhad performed the r i tua l r ight , no matter what t he i r at t i tude was. The r i tua lwould still have its des i r ed e f f e c t .This confi rmed what some have said o f present-day Chinese paganism. I tlacks bel ief in the supernatural . Oh, they belive in a world fu l l of sp i r i t s ,^ o s t s and demons, hut they regard them as weak and s tupid , who can be deceived, cajoled, threatened and given the scraps frcm the table even as a na\j^ty boywould t rea t a dog. So they don 't r espect anything as being greater then themselvesexcept maybe Death.

The n i ^ t before Easter vMle I was teaching English in the vil lage, afoijrth-grader ran in and said, "P^torl There's a corpse on the beach!" Again,Easter morning before dawn (the t ime when Christ rose frcm the dead), a. bleary-eyed second-grader came and sa t by me as I washed ny face. "Pastor," she said,"have you ever seen a corpse? I saw it and I wasn't even scared." Howcould I t e l l her she was too young to be afraid . Death was so conmon to themt ha t they didn ' t even fear it . The demons of th i s world have blinded t he i r^e s . Oh, that they would open their hearts to the God of resurrection.

Stevie i s walking now. Sandi however i s always asking what the Chineseword fo r this or tha t i s . And Joyce i s busy making clothes.Several local Chinese pastors were allowed to tour China and vis i t Peking, and the Catholics have been allowed to reopen a school in China.

coast had been a terrific week. Then, just as the Friday evening service began, Joyce started watchingthe time. Two and a half hours later we drove out ofthe camp fol lowing Wy Summers, our Pharmacist fromLebanon. It 's 105 miles back to Lebanon CommunityHospital, so we looked neither to the right nor theleft. Joyce checked into the hospital at 12:45 a.m.,August nth, and l e s s than 30 minutes la te r DavidAugust Anderson weighed in at s ix pounds and one-halfounce a t 1:13 a.m.David was the first baby ever to be born duringWinema Week of Missions. So, all those attending weresurprised to hear the news Saturday morning. Naturally,I spoke on "The Family, God's Blessing" from Psalms127 and 128 that Sunday morning morning at SouthsideChurch of Chris t in Lebanon.Joyce and David are both doing fine, but as a precaution to the health of our family as a whole, Joyceand our children will probably not be doing anymoretraveling until we come down to San Jose for the lastfew weeks before we fly to Hong Kong. So, our forwarding address is s t i l l the best place to contact us.

I win be traveling quite a bit, however. At present, my schedule looks something like this:August 16 -Portland, OregonAug. 17-21 -Puyallup, WashingtonAug. 24-27 -Tucson, ArizonaAug. 29-Sept. 5 -Bloomington, IllinoisSept. 9-14 -Boise, IdahoSept. 15-17 -El Rio & Los Angeles, CaliforniaSept. 20-0ct. 5 -Northwest School of MissionsOct. 6-7 -Scappoose, OregonOct. 9-28 -San Jose, CaliforniaOct. 29 -Back to Hong KongLiving-Link

After prayer and much discussion,Eastview Christian Church in Bloomington, Ill inois, has invited usto be their living-link missionary family, and wehave accepted. This means that they will be our largest singlesupporter. However, they aren't in a position to provide all of our support, so we all hope that this new

relationship doesn't cause anyone to immediatelywithdraw support from this work.Eastview moreover will guarantee financial assistance in the event of an emergency. They willalso handle the printing and mailing of our newsletters from now on (so we'll make a special effort to get them out on time). In return, we will spend a larger proportionof our furlough time with Eastview and continue tomaintain close contact with them.A living-link relationship between congregation and a missionary is often helpful to both. Both sides are able to get to know each other bette r and to get more involved in each other 's act ivit ies. The missionary'sfamily has a more stableplace to stay, and he doesn't have to worry so muchabout the financial s ta te of his mission.

We are very grateful to Eastview for offeringus this opportunity, and we're looking forward toa growing relationship over many years.Churches, Notice Changed Format:

So as to make i t easier for congregations toinsert our newsletter into their Sunday bulletinsor weekly newsletters, we've changed the style. Soi f you want us to send them in quantity to yourchurch office, or increase the quantity we are already sending you, then please write to Eastview. The new style should also make the material easierto r e ad .

Mission Slides in ReverseI t has always bothered me that we missionariestake pictures and slides of our adopted countryand the people in it;we often do not tell the peo

ple why we are taking their picture or le t themsee a copy of i t , and yet we take i t and show i tto thousands of you a ll over America. I havesought to remedy this situation through severals t ep s .First, as often as possible,I give them a copy of the picture .Second, I try to make a point of telling them

  • 7/28/2019 Anderson-Gary-Joyce-1979-HongKong.pdf

    10/18

that I am taking the picture so I can show my friendsin America who I work with.Third, if they give any indication that they donot want me to take their picture or to have a copyof i t , I won't do so, no matter how much I want it."Finally, I take picutes of you, your homes, yourchurches and your countryside, then I take them backand show i t to my Chinese friends and t e l l them whoyou are. . I sn ' t that fair?CHINA IS NOW CHANGING VERY FAST, PLEASE PRAYTHAT GOD WILL SHOW ALL OF US HCW TO RESPOND PROPERLYTO THIS .

aA TributeThe past five months have undoubtedly been the

busiest in our lives. For Joyce, i t meant taking careof our two pre-school children and our newborn whiletraveling or away from home.As for me, I have never t raveled so much before(24 plane trips), spoke so often (about four times aweek), or visited with so many wonderful people. Wegot back to Hong Kong November 5th, and although thewhole experience was very exhi 1ara t i ng , I am a b i tweary r ight now.We are eternally indebted to countless generousand hospitable people, among whom are many of you, whoopened up your churches, your homes, your earthly resources, and especial ly your l i v e s and hearts to us.Through your compassionate love we were more than adequately taken care of. You t reated us as one of thefamily, eventhough we were often strangers in strangeplaces.I am particularly gra te ful to all of you whoconfided in us about how God is working in your lives. If I were to record your many d i f f e r en t accounts ofGod's work in and through all of you (and I wish Ihad), i t would fill a large volume. Finally, many of you are l e t t ing God's burden

  • 7/28/2019 Anderson-Gary-Joyce-1979-HongKong.pdf

    12/18

for China find a special place in your hearts. Your compassion has moved you to action: Many are moved to regularly pray for China; others are moved to give o f theirmeans; and some have even determined to concentra te t he i rown futures on the saving of Chinese Thank you! Thankyou very much. The Burden Of China

Indeed, God must surely be deeply concerned aboutChina. For He does not want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Yet there are almost as manypeople in China who do not confess the b le s sed name ofJesus Chr i s t as there are in a l l o f North and South America , Africa, Europe and Russia combined!Surely God must also be deeply concerned becausemost Chris t ians do not see the ser iousness o f th is s i tuation. To i l lustrate this point, close your eyes and useyour imagination to draw a circle around the one-millionpeople living nearest you. Chances are that more trainedChrist ian workers are in tha t c i rc le than in a l l o f China. There are also probably more Bibles, Christian books andchurch property in that circle than in a ll of China. Oh,pray that more Christians wil l realize the absurdity ofthis imbalance and endeavor to correct i t through God'ss trength.

Our Par tAs for US, we are now seeking God's guidanceand resources for several projects t h a t we have l is ted

below. We covet your prayers as we solve these problems:1. What kindergarten can we put our daughter,Sandi, in so that she will adequately learn Chinese? Thismorning Sandi got out 32 Chinese flash cards and asked meto go through them with her.2. How to advance the evangelism of the village ofLung Gu Taan where we have had a chapel for a yea r now?So fa r there have not been any converts.

    3. What vehic le would be suitable for us to purchase? Living with three preschoolers 20 miles from theheart of Hong Kong makes a car almost a necessity even-though regular gas costs $1.40 per gallon and other costsar e increa sing.4. How to develop a weekly radio program to broadcast to mainland China? Gospel Broadcasting has made a ll

  • 7/28/2019 Anderson-Gary-Joyce-1979-HongKong.pdf

    13/18

of the arrangements fo r us to be on the a i r andare will ing to cover a ll of the costs involved i f wecan jus t produce the programs.5. How should we respond to Mainland Chinese,from-the People's Republic of China, when we come incontact with them? We don' t want to bungle any God-

given opportunity to guide them to an appropriaterelat ionship with God.6. Wherecan we f i nd su i t ab l e off ice spaceaway from our home, preferably in th e heart of Tuen

Mun? Doing off ice work is a stra in on everyone whenwe have to do it in our home. At the same t ime, wewant to provide a place where of f i ce personnelin businesses and factory workers can l ea rn aboutCh r i s t .

    7. How should we evangelize the people thatwill be moving i n to the housing complex across thes t ree t from us? The complex should have already beenf i l led with 11 ,000 people, but t he re seems to havebeen quite a b i t of del ay while we were gone, perhaps because of s t r ikes .

    December, 1979

PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE PERSONALLY EVEH-TH0U6HIT IS A PRINTED LETTER.I wish I had time to write many of you personally about adesperate situation that has been on our minds ever sincewe returned to Hong Kong, namely: Iridochinese refugees.63,000, Biostly of Chinese descent, are being stored inHong Kong right now, and another flood is expected ina couple of months. Unfortunately, perhaps as many asha lf o f the boats t h a t leave Vietnam never reach safety.I'v e visited two refugee camps here and talked with personnel from both Hong Kong and Thai camps. The situationin Hong Kong is by no means rosy, but the IS Thai campsof Canfcodians and Laotians are almost a holocaust. Tnedead, starving, maimed and dying are everywhere and thenunber is growing every hour. Nearly 400,000 are fleeingto the canps now. How many will make i t is uncertain.Basic survival supplies do not seem to be i n as big alack as the extreme 1ack o f workers . Almost any able-bodies person could save l ives daily, especially a doctor or nurse. I f you are Interested either in donating tiiie or money write to:

Fellowship of Associates of Medical EvangelismBox 623Colunfcus, Indiana 47201

If you could donate a month or two, great! But up to twoyears would be better. Start applying for passports andv i s a s now.The refugee camps however are not a f ina l so lu tion tothese people 's needs.

First, the conditions in the camps continues to deteriorate even-though thousands of dol lars of society's resources are pumped into them daily.Second, camp 1 i fe t ragical ly wastes human resources .Tens of thousands of children who ought to be in schoCT-who ought to be exercising t he i r bodies and minds--whoought to be developing their characters-are left sittingidle nearly all day every day during the most formativeyears of their lives. Men and women with talent and theabili ty to work, and even some with bril l iant minds andhighly-developed skills , are thwarted from doing practically anything worthwhile. And f inally, the worst tragedy of all is t h a t they haveall recently experienced intense hatred and inhumanity, the loss of all family and homeland t ies , and nearly allearthly belongings. They are a fert i le seedbed for Satanto sow seeds of b i t t e r n e s s , hatred and a l l kinds ofevil. But they are j u s t as ready to respond to realChristian love. I t would be the greatest tragedy of alli f we le t evil fes ter and blossom ra ther than overcomingi t with good. Now like never before they are responsiveto God's love. In fact , thousands have a l r eady madesome decis ion fo r Chr i s t .Settling these people in new countries is the only lasting solution. U.S. resettlement focuses on local sponsors befriending the refugees to help them find ini t ialhousing, employment and adjustment to American l ife.Christians have never rea l ly done much to evangelizethese countries. Now God is br inging the mission f ieldright to our doors. From among the refugees that Christians sponsor now will rise up the front line of evangeli s t i c th rus t back into those coun t r i e s 5 to 10 yearsfrom now, and they wil l teach many of us how to helpevangelize their people, too.How can we neglect so critical a ministry? Many of youhave the ability to eternally help these people. Wouldyou personally take a big step of faith and love by con-

Usually she is able to ride to and from schoolwith one of the neighbor boys. Frankly, she doesn't enjoy i t very much yet, partly because i t ' s every dayand not just when you feel like i t , and partly becausei t ' s entirely in Chinese. We hope she will be able topick Chinese up quickly. We are enjoying getting acquainted with a couple ofnew missionary fami 1ies in our area, the Ken Smythsand the David Polings.I am in the midst of a f a i t h - p r om i s e conference a tHong Kok Church of Christ. Their conference last yearwas the f i rs t one ever in Hong Kong. As a result of i ttheir giving during the past year was almost four-times as great as before.China has been completely revamping the i r legal systemwhich has gone so far as to constitute major changesin their constitution over the past year. The resultis tha t the i r laws are a lo t more jus t . A person nowhas right to legal defense. A person cannot be convicted on trumpted up charges without real evidence. Andto be a Christian is no longer synonymous with being areactionary or anti-revolutionary subversive. The needs on the following page need prayer:
