De “gezonde hap” a “healthy bite”
18 maart 2010
Project
“A healthy bite”
“A healthy bite”
Offered in co-operation with the “Zuideramstel district”Start march 2009
What we want to achieve
To create an opportunity for vulnerable citizens to get in contact with their neighbours. To stimulate inclusion
Other achievements• to be more aware of a healthy lifestyle• to make it more easy to participate with other activities
in the neigbourhood• to stimulate contact with each other• to enlarge independance• to be more responsible
Characteristics of the targetgroup
Single, isolatedWithout “normal” workA limited social networkSome of them are in care of a institute for mental illness
(GGZ)Fellow neighbours without mental healthcare
Progress after a year
A steady groupe of 8 to 10 participantsRegular new guests A solid and steady group Tasks and responsibilities divided in the group Some people make other appointments . They go together
to other “dinnertables” or other activities. Some started as a volunteer
Results
More focus on healthy foodNumber of participants meet each other on other occasions 1 participant started with art-history course in the same
community center1 participant is a volunteer at a cafeteria provided by some community centers1 participant has given a salsa dancing workshop in one of
our mental health clinics
Obstacles at the start
It was difficult to find a suitable place / community-centre in
the neighbourhood. Especially a place with a good kitchen. At last, we decided warm welcome and the other possibilities we experienced in “the Brug” were more important for us. It took a lot of work to find and motivate the participants. At the start it took some time before the participants felt at
ease. A lot of attention was necessary to get some group cohesion.
Evaluation of the group
Written questionnaire:
Rating: 8.1 average report markIt recommends "the healthy bite" to others
Conclusions
The running start of the group took much time: finding a suitable location was not so easy.
reaching and motivating the right participants is something that
needs continuous attention. Some of them needs weekly support to
come. Boundaries of the district are a limiting factorA permanent coach is very importantThe participants approached as local residents (not as GGZ
Clients)Continuity is important to ensure participants keep on
coming, even during holidays Returning stimulation to undertake other activities.
Important to invite participants to remain active, some participants
called weeklyThe attention to group dynamics, taking into account the
underlying mental health problemsAttention to any inflow into care“The healthy bite” is different from other lunch groups,
because it requires an active involvement of the participants
