NO SURPRISE: PORSCHE NO. 1 IN J.D. POWER APEAL STUDY 9TH YEAR IN A ROW

Porsche was the No. 1 brand in this year’s J.D. Power APPEAL study, getting the highest rating in the industry from its own buyers for an unbelievable ninth year in a row.

The Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz brands round out the Top 5 – rivals Lexus and Mercedes-Benz tied for No. 5, coincidentally enough.

APEAL stands for Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout. APEAL studies “things gone right.” The much better-known J.D. Power Initial Quality Study explores “things gone wrong.”

You could say that maybe APEAL isn’t the toughest test in the world. The recent APEAL study asked customers to rate just how much they like the car or truck they just bought within the last 90 days, for 77 different vehicle attributes.

It’s tempting to say that on the face of it, people must have liked the vehicle they bought, since after all, they bought it.

There are other J.D. Power studies that interview what J.D. Power calls “rejectors” and “avoiders.” Rejectors consider a brand and very often actively shopped it, but didn’t buy it. Avoiders never even considered a certain brand. It’s useful for car companies to know what turned people off, and they buy the J.D. Power survey results to find out.

Also, there are so many different product categories in the APEAL study, a brand has to do pretty poorly not to be the best at something. But APEAL isn’t always such a softball.

Just ask Smart, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Jeep, and surprisingly, the Toyota brand. They make up the Bottom 5 scores.

J.D. Power researchers drop some strong hints about what may have tripped up some brands and some models, in the form of consumer tips based on the APEAL data:

“Have realistic expectations about the fuel economy of your vehicle and remember that the city/highway/combined mileage ranges listed on the window sticker are merely estimates provided by the EPA.” That sure sounds like some buyers were disappointed in their gas mileage.

“Before you buy, ask your salesperson to demonstrate all of the audio/communication/ entertainment/navigation features on the vehicle. In particular, ensure the voice recognition system (if available) responds accurately to your commands.” Ditto, some owners must have failed to do this.

“Although exterior styling is an important part of a new vehicle’s appeal for many consumers, consider all aspects of a vehicle to ensure it meets your needs. You want to enjoy your vehicle ownership for many years, not just for a few months.” That implies buyers said, “Liked the styling, but …”

/PORSCHE BOXSTER AND CAYMAN NAMED 2013 WORLD PERFORMANCE CAR/At a ceremony hosted by Bridgestone Corporation at the New York Auto Show this morning, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman were named the 2013 World Performance Car.

The World Car Awards (WCA) are presented annually in four categories – Car Design, Green Car, Performance Car and Car of the Year. Winners are determined by an international panel of 66 automotive journalists from 23 countries. Jurors are appointed by the World Car Steering Committee based on automotive expertise, experience, credibility and influence.

“To be chosen as the winner of the World Performance Car by this global jury is extremely rewarding,” said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “The new Boxster is a serious sports car and has become a worldwide success. Its brother, the new Cayman, is launching this month and has already captivated sports car enthusiasts around the world.”

Since the inception of the World Car of the Year Awards, Porsche has won World Performance Car twice; for the 911 (2012) and for the Cayman (2006).

The third-generation Boxster / Cayman is the latest mid-engine offering from Porsche. Completely redesigned, it is lighter, more powerful and more fuel efficient than its predecessor. A longer wheelbase and larger wheels enhance the driving experience.

Delivering 265 and 315 hp respectively, the 2.7-liter Boxster and 3.4-liter Boxster S are available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche-Doppelkupplingsgetriebe (PDK) automatic transmission. The Boxster is available from $49,500 and the Boxster S from $60,900, not including a $950 destination charge.

The Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter engine with 275 hp; with the Sport Chrono package it accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 3.4-liter engine in the Cayman S produces 325 hp; with PDK and the Sport Chrono package it sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The car will arrive in dealerships next month starting at $52,600 for the Cayman and $63,800 for the Cayman S, not including a destination charge of $950.

/PORSCHE CAYMAN NAMED MOTOR AUTHORITY BEST CAR TO BUY 2014/Motor Authority today announced the Porsche Cayman as the recipient of the “Best Car To Buy 2014” award. This is Porsche’s third consecutive year taking home the honor. In 2013, the Porsche Boxster was crowned, while 2012 saw the Porsche 911 named the winner.

The Motor Authority “Best Car To Buy” award is given annually to the best new luxury or performance car with a retail value of more than $50,000. This year, eight nominees were chosen, including two Porsche models. In addition to the Cayman’s nomination, the Porsche Panamera was also considered for top honors.

/PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 4S NAMED 2013 MOTOR TREND BEST DRIVER’S CAR/Motor Trend has named the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S as its Best Driver’s Car for 2013. The Best Driver’s Car honor is decided after a yearly competition among the top new or improved performance cars available in the U.S. market. This is the second consecutive year that a 911 variant has won the award.

/THINGS WE LEARNED DRIVING THE 2014 PORSCHE MACAN/Road and Track. The Porsche Cayenne has, since its inception, lived up to the crest on its hood. It’s quick, agile, and when lined up against its foes, just better to drive. And its reign may have just come to an end. The new Porsche Macan is smaller, lighter and—thanks to a heavily massaged Audi Q5 chassis—way more fun on a racetrack. We drove both the 340-hp Macan S and 400-hp Macan Turbo in Leipzig and quizzed Porsche’s engineers for new intel. Here’s what we learned.

It’s the First Complete Porsche Built at LeipzigPorsche invested half a million Euros expanding its Leipzig assembly plant to accommodate production of 50,000 Macans a year.

It’s More Porsche than AudiThe Porsche Macan and the Audi Q5 share the same wheelbase, but the Macan is slightly longer, lower and wider.

It Doesn’t Drive like a Q5On Porsche’s 2.3-mile test track just outside the Leipzig factory, the Macan further separates itself from its Audi cousin. Buyers would do well to drop the $1490 on the available Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) rear differential.

Quattro wasn’t good enough for the MacanIf there were one part of Audi’s drivetrain you’d expect Porsche to keep, it would be Quattro. But it doesn’t. Porsche needed a system that could bias more torque from front to rear more freely. In fact, Porsche Traction Management (PTM), which uses an electronically-controlled clutch, can actively send 100 percent of the available torque to either the front or rear tires.

The Macan Turbo isn’t ScarySince the very first Porsche 930 rolled onto the street almost forty years ago, turbocharged Porsches have been some of the most exhilarating and frightening beasts in the world to drive. Both the Panamera Turbo and the Cayenne Turbo feel scary quick, too. But the Macan Turbo just isn’t as extreme. And it’s important to note that all Macans are turbos. The $50,990 Macan S uses a 340-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The $73,295 Macan Turbo simply runs a larger 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing an even 400 hp. Porsche says the 0-60 mph times drop from 5.2 seconds in the Macan S to 4.6 seconds in the Turbo.

The Clamshell Hood Is More Important Than You ThinkOne of the young Porsche designers had a picture of a race car with a clamshell hood open. He asked why they couldn’t do this for the Macan. So the Macan’s rear-hinged clamshell hood is aluminum and weighs just 29.6 lbs. It also works as a built in air-box to divert fresh cold air directly into the air intakes for better turbo performance and efficiency.

Cayenne and Panamera were named Best Resale Value in their respective classes. In addition, the Cayenne SUV is one of the Top 10 cars with Best Resale Value according to Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2013 model-year vehicle winners of the annual Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards recognize current and forthcoming vehicles for their projected retained value throughout the initial five-year ownership period.

Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the Kelley Blue Book® Official Residual Value Guide, determined by a skilled staff of automotive analysts. These awards honor vehicles expected to maintain the greatest proportion of their original Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) after five years of ownership. /PORSCHE 918 SPYDER BEATS OWN BENCHMARK VALUES/Shortly before delivery of the first vehicles, the Porsche 918 Spyder is beating its own benchmark values. Marking the success of the final tuning measures, the Porsche super sports car is now even more capable of putting in a strong sprinting performance. The vehicle now accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds (-0.2 seconds), and with the Weissach package, it accelerates from zero to 124 mph on the track in 7.2 seconds (-0.5 seconds). It reaches the 186 mph mark after 19.9 seconds (-2.1 seconds) on the track.

Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Senior Vice President 918 Spyder, highlights the significance of these results: “We have used all options available up to now to electrify the 918 Spyder, working right up to the last minute to do so.”

The enhancements also bring benefits in terms of the electrical performance delivered by the hybrid super sports car. The electric motors (one each on the front and rear axles) allow the 918 Spyder to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds, without producing any emissions. Such a performance marks a reduction of seven tenths of a second on the previous time. With the Weissach package fitted, this electric sprinting time is reduced to 6.1 seconds.

The 918 Spyder complete with Weissach package currently holds the lap record for road vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, boasting a time of 6:57 minutes. Final U.S. EPA fuel economy estimates will be available closer to launch.
