VI/. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions

Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either

become extinct or have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once

roamed the jungles in vast numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is

estimated that they will become extinct.

What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have

been caused almost entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested

in material gain but in personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is

contribution to the problem of extinction. Animals such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other

endangered species, are valuable parts of the world's ecosystem. International laws protecting

these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival - and the survival of our planet.

Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some

countries in an effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal

reserves. They then charge admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and

they often must also depend on world organizations for support. This money enables them to

invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals. Another response to the increase in animal

extinction is an international boycott products made from endangered species. This has had some

effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from being hunted and killed.

VII/. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions

While most desert animals will drink water if confronted with it, for many of them the

opportunity never comes. Yet all living things have water, or they will expire. The herbivores

find it in desert plants. The carnivores slave their thirst with the flesh and blood of living prey.

One of the most remarkable adjustments, however, has been made by the tiny kangaroo rat, who

not only lives without drinking but subsists on a diet of dry seeds containing about 5% free water.

Like other animals, he has the ability to manufacture water in his body by a metabolic conversion

of carbohydrates. But he is notable for the parsimony with which he conserves his small

supply by every possible means, expending only minuscule amounts in his excreta and through

evaporation from his respiratory tract.

Investigation into how the kangaroo rat can live without drinking water has involved various

experiments with these small animals. Could kangaroo rats somehow store water in their bodies and

slowly utilize these resources in the long periods when no free water is available from dew or

rain? The simplest way to settle this question was to determine the total water content in the

animals to see if it decreases as they are kept for long periods on a dry diet. If they slowly use up

their water, the body should become increasingly dehydrated, and if they begin with a store of

water, this should be evident from an initial high water content. Result of such experiments with

kangaroo rats on dry diets for more than 7 weeks showed that the rats maintained their

bodyweight. There was no trend toward a decrease in water content during the long period of water

Page 8: \376\377\000D\000e\000&\000D\000a\000 …i.vietnamdoc.net/data/file/2016/01/30/bo-de-thi-thu-thpt-q…  · Web viewTRƯỜNG THPT LÝ TỰ TRỌNG (Đề thi có 04 trang) ĐỀ

VnDoc - Tải tài liệu, văn bản pháp luật, biểu mẫu miễn phídeprivation. When the kangaroo rats were given free access to water, they did not drink water.

They did nibble on small pieces of watermelon, but this did not change appreciably the water

content in their bodies, which remained at 66.3% to 67.2% during this period.

This is very close to the water content of dry-fed animals ( 66.5% ), and the

availability of free water, therefore, did not lead to any “storage” that could be meaningful as a

water reserve. This makes it reasonable to conclude that physiological storage of water is not a

factor in the kangaroo rat’s ability to live on dry food.

BIRD FLU

There has been a(n) …(41)… of avian influenza, better known as bird flu in Asia recently.

The first …(42)… died two weeks ago in Vietnam and there have been cases reported since in

Thailand, and there are some suspected cases in Cambodia …(43)….

Wild birds are affected by a large number of flu viruses, just as humans and other animals

…(44)…, but they are normally exclusive to birds. If the viruses manage to mutate, they can jump

the species barrier and infect human beings. The first case …(45)… someone died was in Hong

Kong in 1997.

There are several different forms of bird flu, raging from mild to very …(46)…

infections, which spread rapidly and kill many of the birds they infect. It is spread by …(47)…

birds-ducks, in particular – which carry the virus, but aren’t killed by it. They can spread the virus

to farm birds through …(48)… contact or by contaminating water supplies.

World Health Organization officials have attributed the spread of bird flu to human contact

with the droppings of infected birds and …(49)… sanitation. There was no evidence at first that

the virus spread from person to person, though there has been a …(50)… of this happening being

investigated by scientists.

V/. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer

ACID DUST

Calcite-containing dust particles blow into the air and combine with nitric acid in polluted

air from factories to form an entirely new particle-calcium nitrate. These nitrates have optical and

chemical properties that are completely different from those of the originally dry dust particles.

Due to this, climate models need to be updated to reflect this chemistry. Calcite dust is common

in arid areas such as Israel, where this past winter scientists collected particles for analysis.

Working from a mountaintop, the team collected dust that had blown in from the northern

shores of Egypt, Sinai, and southern Israel. The particles had combined with air containing

pollutants that came from Cairo. They analyzed nearly 2,000 individual particles and observed the

physical and chemical changes at the W.R Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.

An important change in the properties of the newly formed nitrate particles is that they

absorb water and retain moisture. These particles can scatter and absorb sunlight-presenting

climate modelers, who need to know where the energy is going, a new wild card to deal with.

Other studies of dust samples from the Sahara and the Saudi Arabian coast and loess from China

show that the higher the calcium in the mineral, the more reactive they are with nitric acid. In

fact, once the particle is changed, it stays that way.

51. What is the main idea of the passage?

VI/. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer.

Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing provided, of

course, that an illness or accident does not kill it prematurely. The most familiar outward signs

of aging may be seen in old people, such as the graying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin.

Page 16: \376\377\000D\000e\000&\000D\000a\000 …i.vietnamdoc.net/data/file/2016/01/30/bo-de-thi-thu-thpt-q…  · Web viewTRƯỜNG THPT LÝ TỰ TRỌNG (Đề thi có 04 trang) ĐỀ

Signs of aging in a pet dog or cat include loss of playfulness and energy, a decline in hearing and

eyesight, or even a slight graying of the coat. Plants age too, but the signs are much harder to detect.

Most body parts grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently during childhood.

They reach their peak at the time of maturity, or early adulthood. After that, they begin to decline.

Bones, for example, gradually become lighter and more brittle. In the aged, the joints between the

bones also become rigid and more inflexible. This can make moving very painful.

All the major organs of the body show signs of aging. The brain, for example, works less

efficiently, and even gets smaller in size. Thinking processes of all sorts are slowed down. Old

people often have trouble in remembering recent events.

One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the arteries, the blood vessels that

lead from the heart. They become thickened and constricted, allowing less blood to flow to the

rest of body. This condition accounts, directly or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged.

It may, for example, result in heart attack.

Aging is not a uniform process. Different parts of the body wear out at different rates.

There are great differences among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells of the body differ in

the way they age. The majority of cells are capable of reproducing themselves many times during

the course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and muscle fibers can never be replaced once they wear out.

Gerontologists - scientists who study the process of aging-believe this wearing out of the

body is controlled by a built-in biological time-clock. They are trying to discover how this clock

works so that they can slow down the process. This could give man a longer life and a great number

of productive years.

61. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. Signs of aging are easier to detect in animals than in plants.

B. Aging occurs in every living thing after it has reached maturity.

C. Not all signs of aging are visible.

D. The outward signs of aging may be seen in old people.

A. Soon after reaching adulthood B. During childhood

C. Early adulthood D. Past middle age

homogeneous in custom and race, with a strong family or clan structure and highly developed

rituals. Order is maintained through sanctions based in the religion or family, and interpersonal

relationships are strong. Tradition is paramount, and change comes infrequently and slowly. There

is relatively little division of labor into specialized duties. Rather, each person is expected to

perform a great variety of tasks, though duties may differ between the sexes. Most goods are

handmade, and a subsistence economy prevails. Individualism is weakly developed in folk cultures,

as are social classes. Unaltered folk cultures no longer exist in industrialized countries such as the

United States and Canada. Perhaps the nearest modern equivalent in Anglo-America is the Amish, a

German American farming sect that largely renounces the products and labor saving devices of the

industrial age. In Amish areas, horse-drawn buggies still serve as a local transportation device, and

the faithful are not permitted to own automobiles. The Amish's central religious concept of Demut,

"humility", clearly reflects the weakness of individualism and social class so typical of folk

cultures, and there is a corresponding strength of Amish group identity. Rarely do the Amish marry

outside their sect. The religion, a variety of the Mennonite faith, provides the principal mechanism

for maintaining order.

By contrast, a popular culture is a large heterogeneous group, often highly individualistic

and constantly changing. Relationships tend to be impersonal, and a pronounced division of labor

exists, leading to the establishment of many specialized professions. Secular institutions, of control

such as the police and army take the place of religion and family in maintaining order, and a

money-based economy prevails. Because of these contrasts, "popular" may be viewed as clearly

different from "folk". The popular is replacing the folk in industrialized countries and in many

developing nations, Folk-made objects give way to their popular equivalent, usually because the

popular item is more quickly or cheaply produced, is easier or time saving to use, or lends more

prestige to the owner.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Choosing a career may be one of the hardest jobs you ever have, and it must be done

with care. View a career as an opportunity to do something you love, not simply as a way

to earn a living. Investing the time and effort to thoroughly explore your options can

mean the difference between finding a stimulating and rewarding career and move from

job to unsatisfying job in an attempt to find the right one. Work influences virtually every

aspect of your life, from your choice of friends towhere you live. Here are just a few of

the factors to consider.

Deciding what matters most to you is essential to making the right decision. You may

want to begin by assessing your likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Think about

the classes, hobbies, and surroundings that you find most appealing. Ask yourself

questions, such as “Would you like to travel? Do you want to work with children? Are

you more suited to solitary or cooperative work ?” There are no right or wrong answers;

only you know what is important to you. Determine which job features you require,

which ones you would prefer, and which ones you cannot accept. Then rank them in

order of importance to you.

The setting of the job is one factor to take into account. You may not want to sit at a desk

all day. If not, there are diversity occupation – building inspector, supervisor, real estate

agent – that involve a great deal of time away from the office. Geographical location may

be a concern, and employment in some fields is concentrated in certain regions.

Advertising job can generally be found only in large cities. On the other hand, many

industries such as hospitality, law education, and retail sales are found in all regions of the

country.

If a high salary is important to you, do not judgea career by its starting wages. Many jobs,

such as insurance sales, offers relatively low starting salaries; however, pay substantially

increases along with your experience, additional training, promotions and commission.

Don’t rule out any occupation without learning more about it. Some industries evoke

positive or negative associations. The traveling life of a flight attendant appears

glamorous, while that of a plumber does not. Remember that many jobs are not what

they appear to be at first, and may have merits or demerits that are less obvious. Flight

Page 34: \376\377\000D\000e\000&\000D\000a\000 …i.vietnamdoc.net/data/file/2016/01/30/bo-de-thi-thu-thpt-q…  · Web viewTRƯỜNG THPT LÝ TỰ TRỌNG (Đề thi có 04 trang) ĐỀ

attendants must work long, grueling hours without sleeps, whereas plumbers can be as

highly paid as some doctors. Another point to consider is that as you mature, you will

likely develop new interests and skills that may point the way to new opportunities. The

choice you make today need not be your final one.

Ever since humans inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of

communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form

of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished

unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only

joking. A nod signifies approval, whileshaking the head indicates a negative reaction.

Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be foundin Braille (a system of raised dots

read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology at

college and zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree

in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked

most of her life.

Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wild, was published in 1941. It received excellent

reviews, but sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year she published The

Sea Around Us, which provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface,

emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imagery and

language had a poetic quality.Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She

had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field.

In this era of increased global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must

begin to put a greater priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately,

there are a number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost- effective

and earth – friendly. Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power.

Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet

the needs of worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily

harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight to electricity. In

theUSalone, more than 100, 000 homes are equipped with solar electric systems in the

form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the world, including many

Page 45: \376\377\000D\000e\000&\000D\000a\000 …i.vietnamdoc.net/data/file/2016/01/30/bo-de-thi-thu-thpt-q…  · Web viewTRƯỜNG THPT LÝ TỰ TRỌNG (Đề thi có 04 trang) ĐỀ

developing countries, the use of solar system is growing steadily.

Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is

geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the

earth. Hot water and steam that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the

surface and used to run a generator, which produces electricity. Geothermal energy is

50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel resources and as

with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A

prime example of effective geothermal use in Iceland, a region of high geothermal

activity where there are over 80 percent of private homes, are heated by geothermal

power.

Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to

conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and

use of alternative energy on global scale.

Question 49: What is the main topic of this passage?

A. How energy resources are tapped from nature.

B. The benefits of solar and wind power over conventional energy sources.
