Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either

become extinct or have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once

roamed the jungles in vast numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is

What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have

While most desert animals will drink water if confronted with it, for many of them the

opportunity never comes. Yet all living things have water, or they will expire. The herbivores

find it in desert plants. The carnivores slave their thirst with the flesh and blood of living prey.

One of the most remarkable adjustments, however, has been made by the tiny kangaroo rat, who

not only lives without drinking but subsists on a diet of dry seeds containing about 5% free water.

Like other animals, he has the ability to manufacture water in his body by a metabolic conversion

water, this should be evident from an initial high water content. Result of such experiments with

kangaroo rats on dry diets for more than 7 weeks showed that the rats maintained their

They did nibble on small pieces of watermelon, but this did not change appreciably the water

availability of free water, therefore, did not lead to any “storage” that could be meaningful as a

ACID DUST

Calcite-containing dust particles blow into the air and combine with nitric acid in polluted

air from factories to form an entirely new particle-calcium nitrate. These nitrates have optical and

chemical properties that are completely different from those of the originally dry dust particles.

Due to this, climate models need to be updated to reflect this chemistry. Calcite dust is common

in arid areas such as Israel, where this past winter scientists collected particles for analysis.

Working from a mountaintop, the team collected dust that had blown in from the northern

shores of Egypt, Sinai, and southern Israel. The particles had combined with air containing

pollutants that came from Cairo. They analyzed nearly 2,000 individual particles and observed the

physical and chemical changes at the W.R Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.

An important change in the properties of the newly formed nitrate particles is that they

absorb water and retain moisture. These particles can scatter and absorb sunlight-presenting

climate modelers, who need to know where the energy is going, a new wild card to deal with.

Other studies of dust samples from the Sahara and the Saudi Arabian coast and loess from China

show that the higher the calcium in the mineral, the more reactive they are with nitric acid. In

Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing provided, of

course, that an illness or accident does not kill it prematurely. The most familiar outward signs

of aging may be seen in old people, such as the graying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin.

Signs of aging in a pet dog or cat include loss of playfulness and energy, a decline in hearing and

eyesight, or even a slight graying of the coat. Plants age too, but the signs are much harder to detect.

Most body parts grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently during childhood.

They reach their peak at the time of maturity, or early adulthood. After that, they begin to decline.

Bones, for example, gradually become lighter and more brittle. In the aged, the joints between the

efficiently, and even gets smaller in size. Thinking processes of all sorts are slowed down. Old

people often have trouble in remembering recent events.

One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the arteries, the blood vessels that

lead from the heart. They become thickened and constricted, allowing less blood to flow to the

rest of body. This condition accounts, directly or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged.

It may, for example, result in heart attack.

Aging is not a uniform process. Different parts of the body wear out at different rates.

There are great differences among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells of the body differ in

the way they age. The majority of cells are capable of reproducing themselves many times during

the course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and muscle fibers can never be replaced once they wear out.

Gerontologists - scientists who study the process of aging-believe this wearing out of the

body is controlled by a built-in biological time-clock. They are trying to discover how this clock

works so that they can slow down the process. This could give man a longer life and a great number

of productive years.

A folk culture is small, isolated, cohesive, conservative, nearly self sufficient group that is

homogeneous in custom and race, with a strong family or clan structure and highly developed

rituals. Order is maintained through sanctions based in the religion or family, and interpersonal

relationships are strong. Tradition is paramount, and change comes infrequently and slowly. There

is relatively little division of labor into specialized duties. Rather, each person is expected to

perform a great variety of tasks, though duties may differ between the sexes. Most goods are

as are social classes. Unaltered folk cultures no longer exist in industrialized countries such as the

industrial age. In Amish areas, horse-drawn buggies still serve as a local transportation device, and

the faithful are not permitted to own automobiles. The Amish's central religious concept of Demut,

"humility", clearly reflects the weakness of individualism and social class so typical of folk

cultures, and there is a corresponding strength of Amish group identity. Rarely do the Amish marry

outside their sect. The religion, a variety of the Mennonite faith, provides the principal mechanism

By contrast, a popular culture is a large heterogeneous group, often highly individualistic

and constantly changing. Relationships tend to be impersonal, and a pronounced division of labor

exists, leading to the establishment of many specialized professions. Secular institutions, of control

such as the police and army take the place of religion and family in maintaining order, and a

money-based economy prevails. Because of these contrasts, "popular" may be viewed as clearly

different from "folk". The popular is replacing the folk in industrialized countries and in many

developing nations, Folk-made objects give way to their popular equivalent, usually because the

popular item is more quickly or cheaply produced, is easier or time saving to use, or lends more

prestige to the owner.

prime example of effective geothermal use in Iceland, a region of high geothermal

activity where there are over 80 percent of private homes, are heated by geothermal

power.

Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to

conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and

use of alternative energy on global scale.
