"Oktyabrskaya" metro station has been chosen as a model for this project, wh ic h is a an in te rs ec t io n po in t of a fe w ma jor t ra nsport ar te ri es Kol-cevaya and Radial naya lines of metro, Sadovoe kolco and Leniniskiy pros-pect streets. This is, indeed where traffic jams start on the daily basisright to the hear t of the cit y. Once the residents had a chance t o leave theircar, and proceed their travel by metro, such tra nsport issues could be par-tial ly avoided in rush hour.Building site for development is currently a small green zone above the un-derground surrounded by 4 roads. Due to the ecology and lack of at tentionplants and trees are dying. In the end, there is a small island of grass withdying plants, without any clear function to it.The objective became clear to transform this land to a functionaland purposeful space, yet saving the green zone and making it morepublic-friendly. Consequently the green zone is raised to a third storey, leaving all t he space to a parking zone. In addition to that, the plants get a chance of surviving with better ecology and a larger distance from theroad. The existing public green space Kaluzhskaya square, now hasa strong connection with t he roof of the establishment.

Reconstruction of this suburban area i ncudes building social communalhousing, private accommodation, a school and a kindergarten. It alsohas a textile mill founded in the end of 17th century, which is trans-formed into a cultural center, a new attraction that has to bring moretourists to the town.Whole region is stretched along the river, which is not anyhow includ-ed in the daily life of the city. Adding an embankment adds gravity to it.Far away from the roads, it becomes a new pedestrian artery of the city connecting new regions with a h istoric centre. Since both the school andkingergarten have an exit to the embankment, it allows kids to travelto school in safet y, without a necessity to cross any roads.

Main objective of the project was to create a communal building, which woul d m ee t the aest het ic an d funct iona l requ ir ements of the as signment.Primary material used here is reinforced concrete. Outer surface of thefaade has movable wooden panels, which reveal windows. On the back, panels are finished with a material that reflects ray heat, thus reducingthe costs on central heating. Particu lar combination of materials, namely wo od an d st one, is very pecu li ar - it is espe ci all y t yp ic al fo r Russ ia n 18t hcentury buildings, known as podkletnaya izba (wooden living house), wh ic h ha ve a foun da t ion made ent ir ely ou t of st one. Modern Bo rovsk st il lhas a signif icant amount of these kind of buildi ngs, which may be consid-ered as Borovsks distinct ive feature.

School has been designed on the foundation of a previously designed re-counstruction of the region in Borovsk townThe establishment has two entrances one from the road and from theembankment. Thus, kids that are traveling t o school by foot may walk t hedistance th rough the embankment without crossing any roads. The polygon shape of the building is achieved by relat ive layering of two x y panes. First is relative to the town plan, while the second one points to allcardinal directions. The surface of the building by itself is a system of narrow vertical panes, wh ic h co nt ro l the f lo w of da yl ig ht thr ough the bu i ld ing . Pa r t of the ro of is a pedestrian green zone with a great view on the river, separated fromthe road with a taller part of the building. In addition to that, those onthe roof may observe the gymnasium through windows located on itssecond tier perimeter.

Archiectural term club is a term, which outlived itself in the late 80s.Definition of that is a building, specifically designed for certain typesof leisure for certain socia l groups of people. Thus, it has a social dividein its foundation from the start.I have left the space requirements of this assignment and changed itsname to Multi-purpose public center. My target has become to designa building, functions of which will not only satisf y the needs of the localresidents, but to create a universal social platform, which would add vi-brancy to the town and develop cultural progress in the city.Borovsk has been chosen as a city model for this project. This town hasa rich history and t here is a great number of objects of cultural heritage.Despite the fact that Borovsk is only 80 km fa r from Moscow, it seems very distant and isolated from the capital, especially due to the public trans-port difficulties. Since locals cannot easily travel to Moscow, deficiency of cultivation is very v isible indeed.I have been given a choice to choose a region for this assignement, and havedecided to locate it in the historical hea rt of the city, which is easily accessi-ble. I have also, however, placed it in a cozy and qu ite place, where residents wou ld enj oy th ei r wal ks and where one cou ld in te ract wi th th e n at ure.I also found myself striving to integrate the building within the sur-rounding architectural and nat ural landscape. For example, from the side

of the entrance, which is located on the main square, a visitor only seesa small part of the building, whereas the rest of the volume is seamlessly buried within the relief of the landscape. In addition to that, the finish-ing is made of wood, a material, which is used in 75 percent of facilitiesof town, which connects historical culture with architecture. In the ana lyzing process I have noticed that, despite the presence of a riv-er, almost none of the local residents spent time down at the water. Thismay be due to inexistense of an act ual embankment, the shore looks wildand not suited for walking. In the course of time, river has fallen out of everyday life of t he residents, and its historic importance ha s been for-gotten. One of the objectives for me was to reunite the town and the river.River is a reference point for this building, it can be seen almost fromevery chamber. Also, the building has an additional funct ional of a stair- way t o i t. The sha pe of the bu i ld in g a ll ow s people t o walk down to the ri ver

wi th out ent er in g t he es tab li sh ment by us in g t he st a ir s l oc at ed on the ro of .Due to the features of the la ndscape, with an orientation to the river, it ap-pears that all windows are overlooking north. To fill the building witha right amount of sunlight, I deformed the rectangle elements so that the faade is not facing north completely. Problems of illumination aresolved with large glass panes. Considering the Russian climate, such largepane may seem like a very i neffective solution. To compensate that, I usedshutters where one side is finished with wood, and the other with a ray heat finishing. During the night these are closed and so the loss of heat is reduced, therefore reducing the cost of heating. These shutters may also be used during the summer, when protection against direct sunraysis so needed, or during the dayt ime to darken the inside space for specialevents. (for example for a f ilm show).

Hitrovka is one of the central districts in central part of Moscow.90% of buildings at Hitrovka are 2-3-storied houses, some of them arebuilt in in 17 centur y. The only square in the area is Hitrovka Square, but several years ago city administration started to build 25floor businesscenter right on the square. That could totally destroy the district. Aftera series of citizens manifestations, building of a center was cancelled, since then square is closed and nothing is done about its reconstruction. While creating the project I was trying to think of a new cultural centerthat would attract people to t he area, but at the same time would be usefulfor those who live i n the nearby houses. That is why Ive made a decisionto place all the exhibition spaces underground, and to create recreationpedestrian zones on its roof. So far museum project consists of 3 parts:underground exhibition space, small one-storied off ice building for mu-seum workers and narrow 4-storied building, where caf, library, book-store ant the main entrance hall are situated.

"1:1" project is an epitomized sculpture of the terrain. The shape of thecarvi ng itself is not of a random location, but of a particular place associ-ated with my own persona l biography, history a nd memories. The formal solution of the sculpture was designed aft er measuring the land, depleting a method that is often used to create cartographic drawings.I did not make up the form of thi s specif ic work, but "borrowed" it from theactual surface, which it closely represents. Having said that, it was only thesceleton that was taken from a complex multilayered and disordered imageof the nature. Details and distinctions of surfaces, their texture and colorare scrubbed, erased; the object then acquires a geometric purity and homo-geneity. Material and visual qualities deprive the sculpture of the sensitiveelement and leave the mathematical accuracy of technical and intellectualoperations. Its visual features aggressively emphasize the artificiality of things and the fact that it has been indeed man-made.Reproducing the topography on a scale of 1:1, motivated by a plea to un-derstand the terms upon its visual representation I was eager to see if it wi ll af fect me in person, especi al ly my emo tiona l react ion to th at specif iclocation. This is an explorat ion of whether it is possible to define the proce-dures and mechanisms, the use of which in the cultural field allows you tolabel the "source" of subjective perception and assign it as a whole memory.

The main idea of the project was to combine an exhibition with a discus-sion spot in one space thus creating a clea r connection between the worksof art and the discussions behind them. At least 16 artists took part i n thisexhibition, most of which would present video pieces. Large amounts of those videos pushed me to hang the screens in such a way, that t hey split the space and therefore become partitions themselves.

Choices project presents an exhibiton of 5 replicas from the collec-tion of Museum of Contemporary Ar ts. Specator is given a chance to votefor the work he/she likes, which the museum will expose afterwards. My task in this case was to organise the open air exhibiting space and think through the constructive system of displaying the pieces, and the spot for voting.
