From Your Governor

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year. With the New Year comes a new challenge! We have been challenged as a District for each individual Club to end the year on June 30 with a plus one in membership. This means that any Lions you have lost for any reason this year, you should find a replacement member for and then add one more. Please remember that membership isn’t just numbers and it isn’t difficult to achieve. It literally is looking at those you interact with on a daily basis and if you think they possess traits of a good Lion then ask them to join. One mistake we make as Lions is sometimes we see family and friends often but we don’t think to ask them to join our great organization. Our goals are based on numbers many times but the individuals you ask are what truly make your Club great. Now is the time to ask to make your Club even more outstanding! First Vice District Governor Richard Delp

Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that we have entered the second half of our Lions year. Don’t forget to keep spreading the word about Lions and finding new and enthusiastic members to join your club. Zone chairs are starting their sec-ond round of Zone meetings, give some thought to attending one in your area. It’s a great way to meet some new Lions and learn what other clubs in your area are doing. The 3rd Cabinet meeting has been moved from February 23rd, to March 2nd. This is a great way to see what’s going on all over the District and what awesome

things are being planned. It will start at 1pm, in downtown Lanark, at the Heritage center, right across from the Public Library. District Governor Elect training is in full swing for me and my fellow DGE council members. We have been attending training at Council Meetings, and come February we are set to spend a week in St. Charles for some pretty intensive training. Don’t Forget! The District convention will be on March 8th and 9th in Historical Downtown Freeport at the Masonic Temple! There is a lot of fun in store so make sure you don’t miss it. Keep your eyes out for a general itinerary and the registration form! Also remember that ads for the Convention Booklet need to be in by February 1st!

Hope everyone has a great time at their upcoming Loins activities and have safe travels!

AMBOY LIONS 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW

Under the leadership of Lion President Roger Wittenauer, the Amboy Lions Club enjoyed a busy and pro-ductive year. The Club began the year with the chartering of the Leo Club at Amboy High School. The Leo Club was up and running with 27 members under the leadership of its’ first president, Kaitlyn Ortgiesen. The Lions Drop Box for eyeglasses, hearing aids, ink cartridges, Christmas lights and keys, painted by Lion Brian Florschuetz of Sublette Auto Body and lettered by John Morley of Morley Signs of Dixon, was installed in front of the Amboy Food and Liquor Store and has been used this year by many residents. Scholarship appli-cations were made available at AHS for the 2018 senior class. The Club welcomed new members Patti and Greg Ohlendorf. Lion Jake Leffelman reported that the Amboy Lions Face book page has been a big success with hundreds of people viewing it on a weekly basis. Plans were begun for the first Community Health Fair to be held in the fall. In mid March, preparations were finalized for the Cliff Walter Easter Egg Hunt. On a cold but sunny March 31st, close to 200 youngsters scrambled through the park in search of Easter Eggs. Rose Day was held in late March and thanks to community support, over 700 dozen roses were sold. On April 15, the five Lee County Lions clubs and the Amboy Leo Club worked together to cook breakfast for the Mabley Center residents and their families. This event was organized by the Amboy Lions and all five Lions Clubs helped to fund it. The Club purchased two AED’s and donated them to the Amboy Community Center and the Sublette Community Center. In May, the Club presented five Amboy High School seniors with scholarships at the annual Honors Night. In early June, the club donated to the Honor Flight to send a local area veteran to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2019. With the start of summer, the club began planning for the 39th Annual Depot Days Parade. They donated $3500 to the Amboy Veteran Park to help purchase flagpoles and lighting. On July 23, Lions Club scholarship winners and their parents were honored at the scholarship dinner meeting held at the Amboy Community Center. In August, Lion D-1 District Governor, Barb Stewart, installed the Amboy Lions 2018-2019 officers and inducted new members Mary Mays and Josh Nichols. On a hot and humid August 25, the 39th Depot Days Parade went off without a hitch and was well attend by an estimated 3000 spectators. The following day, Lions Club members helped to park cars at the Amboy Car Show. In September the Amboy Lions Club lost long-time member, Lion James Braida, who fought a valiant battle against cancer. His service and dedication to club events will be missed. On September 8 the Amboy Lions and Leo club members volunteered to help at the Pulling For Ryon Fundraiser to help offset medical expenses for area resident, Ryon Richardson. The Amboy Lions Draw Down was held the following weekend. This event which is the main fundraising event for the Club was well attended and supported by the community again this year. On October 20, the Club held the first Community Health Fair. The Health Fair information was viewed by over 3300 on the Lions Face book page and was very well attended. In the fall, the Club donated cases of water to the Amboy and Sublette Fire Departments. The Amboy Lions sponsored a new Cub Scout Pack in Amboy Central School with Lion Wittenauer serving as the liaison.

This group is now being formed. In early December the Club received a donation from the Amboy Car Show Committee to be used to purchase additional AED’s and to help fund other Club projects. Other donations throughout the year were presented to: Amboy Education Foundation, Amboy Student School Sup-plies, Baptist Food Pantry, St. Patrick Food Pantry, Center for Sight and Hearing, Amboy Fire Department Christmas Bas-kets, Diabetes Awareness, Vision Specialists, the Sublette Toy Show, and the sponsorship of a young person to attend the Lions summer camp for hearing and vision impaired, and. As we conclude 2018 with the hanging of the wreaths on the Amboy Welcome Signs and the singing of Christmas carols at the Mabley Center, we wish the community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Oregon Lions

Oregon Lions made a donation to the VFW in Oregon at their meeting on December 13th. Oregon Post Commander Bob Coulter accepted the thousand dollar check from Oregon Lions President Dr. Carri Anderson and Lions Vice President Mike Hoff. This donation helped make it possible for the members of VFW Post 8739 in Oregon to distribute Christmas Baskets to needy folks throughout Ogle County. Oregon Lions are proud to have formed a partnership with the VFW in Oregon and are happy to continue to support this Annual Christmas Event. Oregon Lions Sort Glasses in Sycamore Have you ever wondered what happens to the eyeglasses you donate to the Lions? Many of them are shipped to the Lions of Illinois Foundation Building in Sycamore, Illinois, where they are stored and then sort-ed by Lions volunteers. Oregon Lions have pledged to sort eyeglasses once a month at this location. Why is this an important task? Thousands of eyeglasses in hundreds of boxes need to be sorted before the frames are sent off to be melted down to raw material.

Oregon Lions involved in the last sorting session are from left to right: Jim Hoff, Chuck McCourt, Grant Afflerbaugh and Duane Moser

LCIF Update First of all, at our last cabinet meeting on December 15th 2018, we did a pledge drive to support Campaign 100. I would like to thank all those cabinet members who participated in the campaign by either contributing to or pledging to Campaign 100 to the tune of $710.00. Below is a brief explanation of a couple types of grants available through LCIF.

Disaster relief We will deeply engage in disaster relief efforts and in preparing for, and responding to, natural disasters whenever and wherever they strike, providing for short-term relief and long-term recovery of our communi-ties around the world. Natural disasters can be profoundly destructive, leaving in their wake a trail of injury, death and economic loss. Today, approximately 90,000 people die each year, and another 160 million are negative-ly impacted, as a result of natural disasters. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction anticipates these numbers will only escalate, with 15 percent more disaster events occurring each year. From 1970 to 2017, we invested US$112 million in disaster-related grants, and we will continue to empower the service of our Lions, who help communities recover, by: A. Supporting current and expanded disaster relief activities with key partners and organizations expert in the disaster relief sector. B. Participating in different phases of emergency management, including disaster preparedness, immediate aid, community restoration and long-term reconstruction. C. Using major catastrophe and discretionary grants to respond strategically to disasters, including by estab-lishing humanitarian aid depots in pilot regions.

A little known grant: Community Recovery Grant Community Recovery grants are intended to aid districts interested in supporting short-term clean-up and repair efforts in situations where other organizations have already addressed immediate needs. The objective is for Lions to focus on select groups with specific unmet needs where gaps in relief services have been iden-tified in the community. To apply for a Community Recovery grant, the District Governor must submit a proposal with the following information: A. Detail the extent of damages, number of people impacted and the needs within the district. B. Explain what relief services have been provided in the community by Lions and non-Lions. C. Describe the unmet needs the Lions plan to address within the community. D. Outline the Lions’ plan of action including a full project description, details on the project area, the num-ber of people who will benefit from the project, a timeline, a budget (with cost estimates for all goods and services to be purchased with grant funds), and details on the active involvement of Lions and any partners. E. Explain what type of publicity is planned for this project and how the Lions plan to record these activities.

Childhood cancer

We will strengthen medical and social services, increasing the global life expectancy of children living with cancer, and enhancing the quality of life for them and their families. Every two minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer. The average age for diagnosis is six. While the survival rate in high-income countries is 80 percent, children in low- and middle-income countries, which represent roughly 60 percent of children with cancer worldwide, may have survival chances as low as 10 percent to 20 percent. Over 90 percent of deaths due to childhood cancer occur in low-resource settings. With Campaign 100 as the catalyst, we will focus on areas in which there is a stark need for healthcare infrastructure development and human resource capacity building. We will also expand successful projects such as genome mapping to increase diagnosis, treatment and overall survival rate of those afflicted with childhood cancer. Specifically, we will empower the service of Lions through investments in: A. Improving or establishing child oncology services in developing countries through long-term infrastructure development. B. Major medical and laboratory equipment for pediatric cancer screenings, treatment and research.

1 Mobile cancer screening units. 2 Construction and expansion of pediatric cancer centers. 3 Vehicles enabling Lions to provide transportation to families for medical appointments. 4 Construction services and equipment for patient guest house or other communal lodging facilities families can use day treatment, and for camp facilities serving pediatric cancer patients and their fam-ilies.

As always, I would be honored to visit your club to share with you the potential of the power of LCIF grants in making our world a better place. You can reach me by phone (815-745-3339) or email ([email protected]). PDG Duane Shaw District 1-D LCIF Coordinator

Membership There are currently 1,789 Lions in our District. So far this Lions’ year, we have a net loss of 42 members year-to-date. Membership numbers may sound gloom and doom but we are making headway in that we are getting more new Lions and the losses are greatly in part to death and mov-ing. DIAL IT UP! We have been challenged! Every Club in the District has been asked to end this Lions’ year at a plus one. This means that if every Club replaces with new members any Lions you have lost and then get just one more, you have met this goal! Please spend the last six months of our year looking to your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers for those who have a Lions’ heart and then be sure to invite them to your next Club meeting!

Service Service Reporting District 1-D is currently ranked #1 in our Multiple District for Service Reporting! We have over 85% of our Clubs currently reporting on MyLCI their activities! There are still 10 of our 54 Clubs that are not reporting. Our goal for the year is 100% reporting. If your Club needs assistance with reporting, please reach out to District Administrator Marcia Meyers at [email protected] as she can help. Service Provided So far this Lions’ year, District 1-D has reported 20,826 hours of Lions service that we have provided to our communities. Keep up the great job Lions!

Leadership GAT SUMMIT All District Global Action Team (GAT) members which include our District Global Leadership Team Coordinator Paul Lindstrom, Global Membership Team Coordinator Gary Meyers and Global Service Team Coordinator Ron Fruit along with DG Barb and VDG Richard will be attending a Summit in late February. This Summit will be held to brainstorm and share ideas between Districts. If you have any thoughts that you would like passed along or considered, please contact one of them!

District 1 D Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind Trip

LAST CALL!

The District 1 D Lions bus trip to Leader Dogs for the Blind is a GO! There are only SIX seats remaining and you have ONLY till January 25 to join the fun. After the 25th no requests will be honored. The cost for the trip is $210.00 for a single and $320.00 for a couple. The coach has filled enough that anyone that paid the adjusted price will be receiving a reimbursement during the trip. The coach will be leaving Leaf River at 6:45 Thursday morn-ing and arrive back the next evening around 9:30, if all goes well. Your additional cost would be your meal during travel times out and back. We eat at Cracker Barrel going to Leader Dog and at a Bob Evans on the return trip. A second pickup point in Rochelle is possible if enough interest is shown in the southwestern area of the district. Please respond to Paul Lindstrom at 815 738 2761 or email him at [email protected]. Over half of those signed up to go are non-Lions and are really looking forward to this trip.

District 1 D Lions Night at Ice Hogs Game March 23, 2019

Mark your calendars for this year’s Lions Night at the Ice Hogs for Saturday Night March 23, 2019. Game time will be 6:05 that evening and they play the Milwaukee Admirals. Tickets will be the same as last year at $15.00 per person with our District receiving $5.00 for each ticket sold. If your club wants advanced tickets to have for selling please let me know and I’ll get them out to you as soon as I can. Advanced tickets are not necessary but some like to present the buyer with “proof” of their purchase. DO YOU REALLY NEED TO WAIT, get your responses back to me as soon as you can for names and head count. Again, all I need is the NAME of the person that will be picking up the tickets and how many tickets they need. Money is not needed at this time but will need to be paid by March 1, 2019. This has always proven to be a fun night for those that attend whether you are a hockey fan or not. It’s just a great Lions social event! (and it even makes some money for our District)

For your questions or ticket needs contact Paul at 815 738 2761 or email me at [email protected]. Your timely response and cooperation is greatly appre-ciated. Let’s have another big Lions turnout this year!

Genoa Lions The Genoa Lions have adopted a local family again this year to make sure that Santa doesn’t miss them. In conjunction with Kingston Elementary School, a local family with at least 3 young children has been selected to receive presents and a Hy-Vee gift card this Christmas. The gift card and presents total over $300 worth of toys and winter clothing for a deserving local family. Merry Christmas to all and don’t forget to spread your cheer when you can! Pictured presents were acquired by super-shopper Mary Cravatta, lion Greg Cravatta’s ever helpful wife.
