Research Works on Development of the Robotic Arms Adaptive Learning Control for
the Automotive Industry
In automotive industries, intelligent robot is widely used to obtain the utmost precision assembly
operations. Intelligent robot is capable of performing most of the functions and task that are being carried
out by human beings. It is equipped with a variety of sensors with visual (computer vision) and tactile
(touching) capabilities. Much like humans, the robot observes and evaluates the immediate environment
and its proximity to other objects, especially machinery, by perception, and pattern accordingly. Because
of its operation is very complex, powerful computers are required to control this type of robot.
With the intelligent robots in mind, this research will explore the possibility of incorporating
various types of sensors in designing and developing robot devices in the automotive assembly line
manufacturing to ensure the accuracy and precision is achieved. The problem with the current robotic
application in the automotive assembly line, the concept of intelligent robots (use of advanced type of
sensors) is infrequently used. However to substantiate further on the preciseness of task by robots, an
algorithm will be developed coupled with software methods as an adaptive learning control in the real
robotics application.

BRC Grant: RM20,000.00 [Ref. No: 10273]
1. Development of Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) Model for Furniture
Industry. The research involved building and testing FMS modeling for the furniture
industry. Questionnaires were developed to gauge the understanding and the
implementation of FMS by other industries particularly automotive assembly plant,
electrical and electronics manufacturing industry, car components manufacturing plant,
plastic manufacturing industry and furniture manufacturing industry. An FMS model was
developed using Delmia QUEST software simulation which is used to validate the new
proposed FMS set-up and form a basis for measuring the time, productivity, quality and
cost attributes. The physical model developed shows the possible flexibility of the
equipment and the speed to change from one product variant to another. The simulation
result has proven that furniture company could increase their productivity by 100 per cent
if they were to adopt the FMS layout to their plant.
INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND COMMERCIALIZATION (IRDC)

1. Development and Improvement of the Car Seat Polyurethane Injection Moulding
Process. IRDC Grant approved: RM43,970.00 [Ref. No: 10532]. The present methods
and techniques of injecting the polyurethane (p/u) for car seat are still done manually.
Therefore; cost is not minimized, inconsistent product quality, inconsistent production
efficiency and productivity, difficulty in meeting customer’s demands, market variance,
reliable and on time delivery. A research study will be carried out at the car seat p/u
injection moulding plant. The objective of the research study will be to evaluate the
existing methods and techniques of injecting and moulding the p/u for the production of

car seat. A new process and technology for higher productivity will be developed to
attain consistent product quality through layout and line automation improvements as
well as robotic applications. Delmia QUEST software will be used for the simulation of
the new improved process and technology and to determine the cost effectiveness of the
overall project.

pick and place machine that will be made of stainless steel material. The work study method will
encapsulate the overall method improvement and technology development.
MOSTI E-SCIENCE PROJECT (2007 - 2009):
1. A New Computerized and Automated Grading System for Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) in
Palm Oil Mill [Project No: 05-01-01-SF0118]: Head of Project [Completed 8 December
2010]
EScience Grant Approved: RM 236,000.00
Oil extraction rate in the palm oil mill is a critical contributing factor to the mill revenue. Higher
oil extraction rate with less amount of Fresh Fruit Bunch processed is what palm oil millers
aimed to achieve. The oil content in riped palm oil fruits is higher than that of unriped palm oil
fruits. Since the main contributing factor to the maximization of oil extraction rate on the palm oil
fruits is on the degree of ripeness of palm oil fruits, a proper grading system should be developed
to assist the palm oil millers. The normal practice in grading FFB at palm oil mill is done by mill
operators through visual inspection and this is extremely tedious and time consuming which is
prone to errors and inconsistencies in grading results. Thus, modifying and redesigning the
manual grading process to become an automated grading system by introducing a Vision System
which uses CCD camera to capture the image of the fruits to recognize the degree of ripeness of
FFB would help to increase the oil extraction rate, quality and productivity of palm oil
production. This study will also look into computerizing the current manual grading form that is
being practiced by the mill.
2. Anatomically-Corrected-Testbed (ACT) for Anthropomorphic Multifingered Robotics
Hand [Project No: 02-01-01-SF0142]: Head of Project [Completed 29 December 2010]
EScience Grant Approved: RM 255,500.00
With the growth of interest towards humanoid robots, anthropomorphism of robotic hands becomes
a necessary design goal that has been purposely addressed by most research projects such as Utah
Hand (Jacobsen, Iversen, Knutti, Johnson and Biggers 1986), UB Hand (Bonivento, Melchiorri
Curriculum Vitae: Prof Ir Dr. Ahmed Jaffar
10
and Vassura 1992) and Barrett Hand (Townsend 2000). An anthropomorphic placement allows to
easily transferring grasp strategies from a human hand to the robot hand but the different sizes of
each finger and their asymmetric placement makes the construction more expensive and the control
system more complicated. Even though there is so many efforts devoted to designing and building
of anthropomorphic robotic hands but many of it is not anatomical. It could not mimic all materials
and structure of a human hand because human cells are replaced every day to deal with wear and
state of upper-limb prosthesis technology. Upper-limb prosthesis is either hook or hand-shaped and
are actuated by body or external power. The problem is the current devices are lack of degree of
freedom (DOF), heavy and did not have any aesthetic value. This project will focus on improving
the existing prosthetic hand and creating a variable choice of application for the amputation people
depending on their preference.
3. A Novel Corrosion Resistant Cast Iron with Optimized Mechanical and Physical
Characterization [Project No: 03-01-01-SF0117]: Project Member [Completed August
2010]
EScience Grant Approved: RM 136,800.00
Casting is made from metal which is melted, poured into the mould, cooled and solidified.
Cast iron is a ferrous alloy which contains carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus and
sulphur. Cast iron was chosen in many applications because it represents an interesting
class of engineering material due to its structural performance and attractive price.
Recently, there are many cast iron products that suffer from wear due to corrosive
environment. Corrosion deteriorates the intrinsic properties of a material due to
environmental reactions. The surface coating of cast iron proves to enhance corrosion
resistant but surface treatment requires time, labor, equipment, and material handling and
all of these have associated cost. Many chemicals that were once commonly used, such as
cyanide, cadmium, chromium, and chlorinated solvents, have now come under strict
government regulation. This research project is aimed to develop a new corrosive resistant
cast iron. This new developed cast iron can be used as cast product without going through
any surface coating processes. Hence, from this project a greater corrosive resistant
material with equal and/or superior physical, mechanical and morphological properties of
cast iron will be discovered.
