Ebenezer 1911
Nine households were headed by people descended from chocolate-maker John Kipling (b
1788) and his wife Sarah Hinkins, via two of their sons Joseph (b1811) and Ebenezer (1814).
John was the son of warehouseman Robert Kipling, whose origins are as yet undetermined.
This is probably the record of John’s baptism.

These are probably his sisters Ann, Mary (who later married George Lambley) and Elizabeth.

It is likely that his parents married in 1777 (note that a John Bird was a witness at daughter
Anne’s wedding)1
St Mary Lambeth, 1777
I have been unable to trace Robert’s death but afterwards, did widow Ann marry a witness
from daughter Anne’s wedding?
1 A Robert Kipling was a tea-dealer at Tower Hill in the 1770s. However, it is possible that this was the Robert Kipling of Bowes and later Ferrybridge, who coincidentally also married in London in 1777 (see ‘The Tippling Dean Kipling’). A Robert Kipling, porter, was tried at the Old Bailey for theft in 1773. In evidence, he is quoted as referring to “his master in Yorkshire” but I have not been able to ascertain anything more about him (see ‘Transported!’).

desertion, and again in September 1872 in Gibraltar.
Later the same year he was penalised twice again for being absent, once whilst drunk.

unknown.

Son Jonathan Edward died in 1905, although curiously he was entered in the 1911 census

living.

1918 at the battle of Amiens (see WW1 Kiplings – 1918).
