The par force hunting landscape in North Zealandinscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015
United NationsEducational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization
UNESCO World Heritage In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Danish kings practices a form of hunting, called Par force hunt. It is a brutal form of hunting which requires lots of forests, hunting roads and deer. For this purpose, Christian V creates Jægersborg Dyrehave and Hegn as one large deerpark in 1670.
Many of the forest roads in Jægersborg Forest and Deer-park are the original hunting roads, and the present popula-tion of red- and fallow deer are descendants from this time. In 1734-36, the grand Hermitage Palace is built as a hunting lodge. Here the king hosts his banquets during his par force hunts.
In 2015 Jægersborg Forest and Deerpark, along with Gribskov and Store Dyrehave, are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These unique cultural landscapes constitute the par force hunting landscape of North Zealand. The landscapes are also a symbol of the autocratic monarch’s absolute power and need to demonstrate it to the common people, and to their guests.

Jægersborg Forest and Deerpark
Places to see
Bøllemosen. Forest lake surrounded by a bog of peat moss and birch forest.Skodsborg railway station. Magnificent station building from 1897. Frequently used by Copenhageners because of direct and easy access to the forest from the station.Skodsborg Dam. Beautiful old carp pond from King Frederick VII’s time. Today, you can fish for roach and bream.Ancient monuments. Burial mounds can be found many places in Jægersborg Forest and Deerpark. Mølleåen stream. This is 36 km long and takes its rise from Bastrup Lake. You can navigate by canoe to Strandmøllen mill, where there is a campsite.Raadvad village. One of the earliest industrial towns in Denmark, dating back to the 1600s, when hydro power from Mølleå stream was utilised. Today, the village has an inn, a hostel, houses and a knowledge centre about old trades and crafts.Stag beetles. Stag beetles have been reintroduced to this area. Stag beetles are large beetles of about 8-9 centimetres, which disappeared during the 20th century because of intense forestry.Hvidtjørnesletten and King Christian V’s oak. The place where King Christian V was kicked by a wounded stag during a parforce hunt in 1698. The king died the year after, possibly from the wounds sustained from the kick. Eremitagen (Hermitage Palace). Built by Christian VI, the palace was the centre of the royal hunts. Today, the royal family uses the palace for official purposes.Ulvedalsegen. One of the oldest oaks in Jægersborg Deerpark. It is more than 800 years old.Dyrehavsbakken amusement park. The oldest amusement park in the world came into existence in 1583 as a market place near Kirsten Piil’s spring.Klampenborgporten. Today, Jægersborg Deerpark has 15 red gates and entrances. The gates have been painted red since the mid-1700s.
Welcome to Jægersborg Forest and DeerparkJægersborg Deerpark and Forest are the most visited nature reserves in Denmark.
Areal: Roughly 1.700 hectares. There are 8 km from north to south.
Flora: Jægersborg Deerpark is known for it’s ancient solitary oaks and hawthorn.
Animal life: Around 2.000 red deer, fallow deer and sika deer roam Jægersborg Deerpark. Both forests are further-more rich in species of mammals, birds and insects.
S-train, line C, ends at Klampenborg railway station. The coastal railway stops at Klampen-borg and Skodsborg stations. Find the timetable at www.rejseplanen.dk
See www.rejseplanen.dk
Camping and open fires are only allowed in designated areas.
Dogs are allowed only when on a leash. However, dogs may run free in designated areas. See map on the other side.
Horse-back riding is allowed with a valid horse-back riding pass. Horse-back riding passes can be bought at www.nst.dk/ridekort.
The main paths are generally in good condition.
Parforce hunting was abolished in 1777, but every year the echo of the thrill of the hunt runs through the forest, when the Hubertus riders storm Magasindammen pond in Dyrehaven forest during the annual Hubertus Hunt.
