POSITIONS HELD AND ACTIVATES CONDUCTED IN THE DEPT. OF ZOOLOGY
I was responsible for the following activities initiated and carried out for the development of the
Department of Zoology
1.Head - Department of Zoology, University of Peradeniya (2007 – 2010)
8
2. Establishing the Invertebrate Systematic Diversity Facility (ISDF) in the Department of Zoology
(September 2004) I was responsible for preparing the documents for the establishment of the ISDF for approval by the
Departmental Committee /Faculty Board / ADPC /Senate and subsequent setting up the ISDF. The
ISDF holds a collection expert identified insect specimens made available through the Smithsonian
Insect Survey conducted in Sri Lanka (1970-19800) by the late Dr. Karl Krombein. The collection
consists of 3098 insect specimens belonging to 1863 insect species in 14 Orders. I am also the
academic staff member in charge of the facility
3. Establishment of a database on insect specimens in the ISDF Collection - 2006
With funding obtained from the NSF Grant No. RG/2005/Eb/06 awarded to me for a Research
Assistant and with support from the technical staff, an online database of the Insect specimens from
the Smithsonian Survey was developed with digital images and collection details.
4. Conduct of Subject Review in Zoology – July 2008
Preparations (documentation and other) for the conduct of Subject Review were conducted under my
Headship, where much of the responsibility was taken by me with help from academic and technical
staff.
5. Setting up of the Reading Room in the Department - 2008 A separate room in the department was identified and arranged for this purpose. Donations of text
books were sort from well wishers. An initial donation of 690 books by Mr. Rohan Pethiyagoda,
formerly of the Wildlife Heritage Trust helped to start off a library in the reading room for the use of
staff and students.
6. Establishment of a welfare fund for Zoology & Biology Special students -2010
