2.3. Eddy Current Testing

In eddy current testing electrical currents are generated

in a conductive material by an induced magnetic field.

Distortions in the flow of the electric current (eddy

currents) caused by imperfections or changes in a

material’s conductive properties will cause changes in

the induced magnetic field. These changes, when

detected, indicate the presence of the imperfection or

change in the test material.

Magnetic Particle Inspection is used to identify Surface

and Near Surface Discontinuities in Ferromagnetic

Materials such as Steel and Iron.

2.6. Visual Inspection

The oldest of all the methods, components are scanned

visually, sometimes with the aid of low or high power

lenses, fibrescopes, cameras and video equipment, to

determine surface condition.

Pitting, Cracking, Corrosion, Erosion, Weld, Condenser

tubes, Heat Exchangers and Tubes, Pipelines, Steam and

Power turbines, Pumps, Gearboxes, Compressors,

Boilers, Headers and Valves. Remote Visual Inspection

equipment can be used for condition monitoring,

allowing accurate assessment of defect length, width

and depth.

2.7. Vibration Analysis

A fundamental requirement in all vibration work,

whether it is in the design of machines which utilize

its energies or in the creation and maintenance of

smoothly running mechanical products, is the

ability to obtain an accurate description of the

vibration by measurement and analysis.

Thermography enables the thermal profile of an item,

machine or building to be presented in a graphic, from

which allows a working temperature assessment to be

derived. From this, variations in the material or

component temperature are identified, enabling

working limits or corrective actions to be identified.

3.1. Residual Life Assessment (RLA)

NDT is a powerful tool to collect data to be used for

calculating the Remaining Life of Industrial Components.

An RLA study would recommend the selective

replacement of components close to the end of the

service life in order to extend the useful life of the entire

plant and ensure safe operation.

Ultrasonic oxide scale measurement on boiler tubes,

wall thickness data and operating conditions, i.e.

temperature and pressure, supply the required input to

predict service life using constitutive equations.
