The Aprilia MXV 450 entered into the motocross history books thanks to Chicco Chiodi's success in the final round of the Italian Motocross Championships, disputed on Sunday, October 14th at Gazzane di Preseglie (Brescia, Italy). In fact, it was the first time that a twin 4-time motorcycle won an official national motocross championships race. Riding the MXV 450 to success was Chicco Chiodi, the three-time international 125 champion and official rider of the Noale Production House. He did everything right, starting from Saturday's MX1 qualifying sessions (the class for 450cc 4-time motorcycles) where he registered the best time, ahead of David Philippaerts. The Italian pair also confirmed themselves to be the best during Sunday's warm-ups as they earned the pole. At the start of Race 1, Chiodi didn't have a great start, taking the first curve in the middle group. In a couple of laps, he was able to rid himself of the adversaries he had been following and made his way up to 2nd place, aiming for Philippaerts in the lead. This last adversary, however, was able to successfully administer the lead he had accumulated during the initial phases of the race and went on to win the heat. For Chiodi, also the winner of the fastest lap during the race, it was a well-deserved 2nd place, especially knowing that victory was within reach. This undertaking was simply pushed back to the second heat when Chiodi, second at the start behind Philippaerts, passed his rival during the first lap and gained the lead. Both riders immediately stepped up the rythm of the race (Salvini, who finished 3rd, was about 30 seconds behind the top two finishers) but Chiodi was able to contain Philippaerts' attacks, ultimately forcing his rival to settle for 2nd. The checkered flag thus awarded the heat victory (and that of the day) to Chicco Chiodi's Aprilia twin. Thus the year of Aprilia's official reentry into the motocross closes out with a brilliant, national affirmation of the evident progress made by the MXV 450, starting from the second half of the championship.

SUPERMOTO ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: A TOUGH RACE AT CASTELLETTO FOR VAN DEN BOSCH The last act of the Supermoto Italian Championships at Castelletto di Branduzzo (PV) marked the

awarding of the national Italian titles. Thierry Van Den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 450) presented himself in less than ideal shape due to the double fracture of his left hand, injured during the “Supermoto of the Nations”. Ten points behind Bernd Hiemer in the international ranking, he gave it his all in both heats, unsuccessfully attempting to gain points on his rival. Race 1 saw Hiemer take off in command, followed by Van Den Bosch's official Aprilia twin. The Frenchman controlled the leader for half of the race, before losing ground due to an exhaust problem (the posterior meter broke). He was forced to settle for 2nd place. To make matters worse, he was stopped during the phonometric trial by the race commissioners and pushed back to 7th place. At the start of

the final heat, VDB again found himself in Hiemer's wake. The two riders duelled it out at long before, with three laps to go till the end of the race, Van Den Bosch attacked his rival in an attempt to bring home the heat victory. The German closed the door on Van Den Bosch's efforts and, in order to avoid a fall, VDB went off the track and watched Fabio Balducci and Ivan Lazzarini pass him. He finished the race in 4th place, 3rd overall in the championship. Team Aprilia Off Road competed in Italy with Christian Iddon in the S2 class (Aprilia SXV 550) to conduct a series of tests. It was a Race 1 to forget for the Britain, who was involved in a frightening pileup at the first curve. Chris climbed back atop the saddle and made his way from the back of the pack to 13th place. In the final heat, he placed 6th following a normal race. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TEAM SXV APRILIA RACING ENJOY SUCCESS IN NEWCASTLE Team SXV Aprilia Racing headed up to Cameron Park, Newcastle, NSW for a double-header weekend of

Supermoto racing with a clear plan for maximizing points on this tight and twisty track. Round 2 of the Australian Supermotard Championship took place on Saturday with back-to-back Round 3 on Sunday. “This track is definitely too tight to use all 80 horsepower at our disposal, so we’re not getting that advantage here,” said S1 class superstar Josh McFarlane. “But we’ve managed to improve the bike so that it’s now up there with the singles on the dirt and is quicker on the tar so I’m really happy with the progress the team has made in practice and testing. “Saturday was a great day for me with some competitive battles

and a 2nd overall, whereas we had a couple of problems on Sunday and I only managed 3rd on the day. But generally, I’m really happy and we’re getting quicker and quicker as the season progresses so I’m really looking forward to my home round at Ipswich in early November”, Added McFarlane. The team’s S2 class rider Alex Gobert also had an enjoyable and successful weekend with time on the bike and forward progress being the young rider’s main aim. “I really felt practice went well, I set out to maximize the tar and dirt handling of my SXV450 and the bike is definitely the quickest out there on the tar section.” Said Gobert. “I missed out on Superpole on Saturday having qualified in 7th, but thought about things overnight and after assessing my 4th spot on the Saturday I knew I could get more speed out of myself and the bike and I set out to qualify and get the team my first ever Superpole. “I knew my last lap in Sunday’s regular qualifying was fast, but I was stoked to see the time – 2nd with a low 1 minute 10 second laptime. So we were in Superpole and I was determined to do well as this track is tight and very hard to pass on, making both qualifying and the start really important. “In the event, I made a small mistake on my hot lap, and qualified 5th, but even so I knew I could ride faster still in the races. In the end I came 6th and 5th in the races with a 5th overall, with my fastest race lap only 0.4 second slower than my fast qualifying lap. To finish in the top 5 in the premier S2 class is great – now I going to aim for the podium.” Said a delighted Gobert. Team technician Ben Tompsett summed up the team’s weekend saying, “We made a lot of progress with the bikes this weekend. They’re handling and driving off the bends better than ever and both riders put in a big effort on a very tight and technical go kart track. It was especially pleasing to see Josh get a 2nd overall – but we’re aiming for the top spot next time out!” Team SXV Aprilia Racing will next be in action for rounds 4 and 5 at Ipswich Raceway Queensland on 10th and 11th November. In addition to the Team SXV Aprilia Racing riders, several privateers had a successful and enjoyable weekend with Shane Stratton finishing 9th overall on Saturday and 8th overall on Sunday in the S1 class; Gordon Milne finishing 10th in the veterans’ class on Saturday and 8th on Sunday; Greg Hopkins finishing 8th overall in the Novices Class on Saturday and Erin Stevens 7th overall in the Novices class on Sunday. Condolences to Paul Grant-Mitchell who started the weekend well on the Saturday on his SXV550 in the Veterans class only to crash hard in the third race and put himself out of action for round 3. Get well soon Wetty. Congratulations to all Aprilia privateers – we’ll see you in Queensland! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
