1 | background
Throughout Europe and other developed regions, ideas are
constantly being sought to facilitate the use of public
services in urban and rural environments. Some initiatives
directly point out the particular issue of automation of
urban services. In the overall goal of ecologically-friendly
traffic systems lies the challenge of how to provide a safe,
autonomous environment that serves and stimulates a
growing number of non-vehicular traffic. Cities are often
equipped with the basic needs for cyclists and pedestrians,
but their spatial resources for serving two-wheelers are
limited. Between cities, the steadily-expanding roads that
serve cyclists generally lack the means to provide an
experience beyond the road itself; despite the high
standards of care and planning, ‘snelfietsroutes’ are
usually oriented towards riding from A to B, a daily
race with little or no predestined places for visual
pause or physical relief.

To encourage a growing number of work-and-back
cyclists, and to enliven the monotony of this bicycle-
highway, we introduce an experience that combines the
efficiency of inter-city cycling, the purchasing power of
cyclists and a ready-available technology in one of the
world’s fastest growing markets.
‘Zijwegen’, or Sideways, is more than just a vending
machine. It is a series of drive-bys offering
products, light, up-to-date information on various
levels and a sense of identity and homogeneity
throughout the journey.
Readily accessible to all, the Sideways system stores
items for sale, displays general information and enables
cross-referencing along each of its stations. This is a
mix of technology and experience ideally suited for
frequent users of the public bicycle route.

The Rijnwaalpad is a highway connecting two major
cities, four gemeenten and five villages to each other. It
superpositions a new trajectory on several typologies,
from the urban fabric through agricultural fields to open
landscapes and intersecting roads. Zijwegen sees the
potential of highlighting these bits of land by incorporating
their produce into the path.
Not just distances, but extras such as recreational
routes, tourist spots and local ‘streekproducten’ are
represented on one or the other side of the lane, in
accordance with agreements between municipalities
and the commercial entities involved.
In 2020, an estimated 170,000 people will be living in the
area between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The layout, variety
and 24-hour accessibility of Zijwegen certainly anticipate
this growth.

Zijwegen’s quick-stop system works as a network
and individually - all stations fulfill certain basic
common needs, and the contents of each individual
station are up to the local provider or endorsing retailer.
The purchasing system is completely cash-free, relying
on previously charged smart-cards for daily use. This
ensures a quicker transaction, discourages break-ins and
monitors users if necessary.
The basic quick-stop is a prefab concrete module, the diverging form representing the branching of two routes. The
side facing the approaching cyclist encases the vending machine and other hardware. The other side includes a one-
man seat for a brief pause under the shelter of the roof and a larger info-panel displaying time, temperatures and other
information. A low-profile rack for one bike completes the overall image.
Near the middle of the route on trajectdeel 5 (Kattenleger), a big rest area is envisioned. Unlike the common quick-
stops, it invites cyclists to experience the highway from without, that is - lock their bikes, buy a cup of coffee, magazine
or snack and take a break from the journey on a bench facing the view.
Applying off the grid fuel cell technology, also used to
power low-emission land vehicles, and solar-powered
energy will eliminate the need to connect the 17 km
network to electrical infrastructure.
The signage and information system network
throughout the route will comprise sources as GPS-
based data, local newsfeed, user-generated content
etc.
Another technological advance, interactive
monitoring, can be applied to the stations.

Monday, 7:30 AM: after waking up, brushing teeth and
eating breakfast, Annelies mounts her pedelec in
Nijmegen to get to her job in Arnhem’s WTC. It’s a
workday and she must welcome an important guest in
the office at 8:30. The usual travel time at 25 km/h is 40
minutes.
Driving slower than usual due to a rain shower and
sudden gusts, Annelies‘ umbrella doesn’t take the strain
and breaks around the 8,000 meter milestone. The
previous personal accessories stops were located at
14,000m, some 15 minutes behind, and she has already
passed the midway station. She should approach the
next one at 5,800m. She arrives at 8:05, slightly soaked.
Pausing to stabilize her bike, Annelies purchases a rain-
cape and a clean shirt, taking advantage of the
processing time to text that she may be five minutes late.
Placing the shirt in the rear carrier, she dons the cape
and moves on at 8:10. reaching work at 8:25, Annelies
briefly changes her shirt and adjusts her hair before
turning up at 8:35, (almost) as expected.

Every other Sunday, Hans from Elden takes his wife
and two children on a weekend cycling trip. This time
their destination is De Hoeve, six kilometres away.
Hans plans the trajectory from Knooppunt number 7 to
number 2. Since they have grown, both children are
proud to keep up with their own bicycles at a leisurely
9 km/h.
After some local sightseeing, the family rides back
through KP 8, past the Lingewal and through Bredelaar
to rejoin the Rijnwaalpad near the 8,000m milestone.
After this detour the kids are thirsty and their parents
need to use a bathroom. In the midway station Hans
has led them to, there ‘s soft drinks, advocaat and jam
for from a farm on Rijkerswoerdsestraat, besides a
clean WC.
It’s time to head home. Hans opts for cycling the
remaining way in a direct route and leads the 5 km
journey to Elden along the snelfietsroute, pausing
briefly at the 3,000m junction to buy flowers. It’s a
Sunday after all, and quick-stops are always open!
