Welcome to Utrecht!

Judging from the quality and the enthusiasm of France’s young musicians, one would have to agree that the adventure of early music has only just begun.

As the world’s largest early music festival, Utrecht holds the ambition and the responsibility to be the premier stage for research and creativity in our field. The case for French repertoire – still under-valued or even unknown outside its native country – and its many talented performers is one that Utrecht takes on with pride.

From 27 August to 5 September, through over 100 concerts and events, the city of Utrecht will become a French enclave. At the heart of our pro-gramme: the grandeur and the intimacy of French Baroque music, for all to enjoy.

Louis’ daily rhythm

‘Holding an almanac and a watch, one could tell ex-actly what the King was doing, even at a distance of three hundred miles,’ according to Saint-Simon. From the early morning until well into the night, the palace of Versailles was buzzing around its centre: the Sun King. Every day, he moved from room to room, traced by an excited throng of courtiers. In this Festival, mirroring Louis’ daily routine, every moment has its own character.

Skip Sempé, harpsichordartist in residence

Clearly outspoken and radically original: Skip Sempé acquired a unique position within the world of early music. Unafraid to question everything, he has found a broad group of admirers. This comes as no surprise, since his ensemble Capriccio Stravagante has always been able to re-juvenate like a phoenix, operating like ‘a 17th-century atelier, where painters and instrument builders are both in control of the reigns’. During the Festival he will perform in four concerts, including the opening concert with Capriccio Strava-gante – Les 24 Violons, a reincarnation of the eminently virtuoso orchestra of Louis XIV, dominated by the rich colouring of some peculiarly French string instru-ments: dessus, hautes-contres, tailles, quites and basses de violon.

Philippe Pierlot, viola da gamba artist in residence

Philippe Pierlot’s versatility is stunning: not only is he an exceptional performer, he is also a tireless researcher and ad-vocate of unknown repertoire. Often, this leads to some exciting sidesteps, as during the 2009 Festival when he re-vealed himself to be an inventive player of the baryton, a mysterious gamba-like instrument with extra, hidden strings. If it hadn’t been for Haydn’s works for the baryton, he confessed, he would never had taken the trouble to learn this fiend-ishly difficult instrument. As a gambist, also, the hidden qualities of music bring out the best in him. Pierlot plays three concerts: a solo recital highlighting for-gotten masters like Buisson, Machy and Hotman, and two with his own Ricercar Consort playing Couperin’s Pièces de violes and his evocative Apothéoses for Lully and Corelli.

Eugénie Warnier, soprano

artist in residence

She was a shining star in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie with the Nationale Reis-opera, led by Jed Wentz last season: Aricie was one of her first great opera roles and garnered critical acclaim. French soprano Eugénie Warnier possesses everything to please: an amazing voice, plus a keen musical mind. Embraced by the powers that be in early music, but equally at home amongst her own generation, the avant-garde of French Baroque musicians. Learn-ing from experience and expertise, she is one of the voices of the new sound coming from France.

Hemsch harpsichord 1751 instrument in residence

Original, antique harpsichords are for the better part silent. This year, the Festival welcomes the 18th-century Hemsch harpsichord as a guest of honour. Con-naisseurs appreciate ‘the Hemsch’ as one of the premier French instruments – it has a personality, a unique voice, a soul. According to myth, this would even be the instrument that Jean-Philippe Rameau played. Paris-based Jean-Henry Hemsch supplied the instruments for Le Riche de la Pouplinière, the maecenas who took in Rameau and his family. The glorious instrument will be played in six recitals, always with François Couperin as point of reference. Conservator Anthony Sidey will give an introduction, while young profes-sionals will be able to take lessons with the best teacher in the world: an original, 250-year old keyboard instrument, in the best of health.

Recently, the instruments of the 24 Violons du Roy have been reconstructed. The famed string players of Lully’s orchestra – dessus, hautes-contres, tailles, quintes and basses de violon – offer a completely new sound to Louis XIV’s favourite music. This concert will offer opera fragments, orchestral and ballet music by Lully, Muffat, Marais and others.

Franco PavanluteMusic of angels: the French lute

Contemplation and reflection are the keys to our mid-night series of quiet lute and harpsichord repertoires. Franco Pavan, member of Accordone and other groups, will open with early lute music by Gaultier, Gallot and Mouton, whose Paris lute books have re-cently been recovered in Prague. Thus follow after the exuberance of the Baroque feast: intimacy.

Aurélien Delage & Laurent StewartharpsichordMusic for two harpsichords

Louis XIV’s court composer d’Anglebert transcribed Lully’s popular opera music for harpsichord. Aurélien Delage and Laurent Stewart continue this tradition and present some arrangements of their own, next to original repertoire for this beloved combination, by le Roux, Couperin and Rameau.

La Risonanza with Fabio Bonizzoni

Roberta Invernizzi, soprano Le goût italien

Lully is considered to be the founder of French Baroque opera, but before he gained that status, he wrote vocal intermezzi for his ballets still in the warm-blooded Italian aria tradition. Virile music, juxtaposed by Fabio Bonizzoni with Italian-inspired works by French composer André Campra, taken from his L’Europe galante.

PantomimeRameau: Pièces de clavecin en concerts

While Rameau considered his five Pièces de clavecin en concerts (1741) perfectly suitable for harpsichord solo, he clearly introduced a new chamber music genre. Pantomime is the coming together of violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord in equal measure. The path to the classical piano trio was opened.

Thomas DunfordtheorboLe Manuscrit de Saizenay

Nobleman and amateur musician Vaudry de Saize-nay collected late 17th-century lute music into an invaluable manuscript, since it contains more often than not unique copies of French works for lute and theorbo. Young French lute player Thomas Dunford chose music by de Visée and Marais.

Il Gardellino with Jan de WinneCéline Scheen, soprano, Alain Buet, bassCouperin: Petits motets

Perhaps surprisingly, we have no knowledge of any grand motet by Couperin. Apparently, just as in his instrumental music, he stuck to smaller forms like the petit motet. He also took on even smaller gems: versets du motet or selected lines of chant, reworked into pearls of beauty for some of the most exquisite singers of his day.

François Couperin 1668-1733composer in residence

Who else except François Couperin could be called com-poser in residence of a Festival on French Baroque music, especially given the amount of space reserved for keyboard music. As a member of a Parisian family of organ players, he not only inherited obvious musical qualities but excellent contacts as well. It didn’t take long for his exceptional talent to be recognized and for his career to take off. He took up a post as organ player at the Chapelle du Roy and would stay at court his whole life, as a harpsichordist and a composer, even after Louis XIV’s death in 1715.As far as we know, François Couperin never wrote large-scale orchestral works, let alone opera. His strength was in smaller forms, which he improved upon with his own imagi-nation. His keyboard oevre spans four books and 27 ordres, suites after a fashion where the dance movement gradually gave way to character pieces: often sharply defined inter-pretations of noted personalities and events. Couperin’s instrumental music stands out for his perfect fusion of the Italian and French styles. Finally, in his sacred music, he al-most challenges the grand tradition of Versailles by chosing a more minimalist approach. With his breathtaking subtlety, Couperin won universal acclaim.

Baroque gesture, a theatrical sign language to support the vocal part, is a neatly specific as well as an often over-looked feature of the French tragédie en musique. Traverso player and conductor Jed Wentz presents his research in this field later this year, and put together a demonstration for the Festival with soprano Andreanne Paquin to show the remarkable effect of coming music with gesture.

Capriccio Stravagante with Skip SempéJudith van Wanroij, soprano, Benjamin Alunni, baritonePastiches à la française

A pastiche is a show put together with highlights of several operas by different composers. Capric-cio Stravagante and two top-class soloists invite the listener to a feast for the ears, a Baroque emotional rollercoaster with arias and overtures by Leclair, de la Barre, Couperin, Marais and Matho.

For a long time, the viola da gamba was France’s favorite string instrument. Still, much of its repertoire has not been rediscovered. Philippe Pierlot, research-er, advocate and performer of this music put together individual movements to make new suites for this tasteful program.

La Belle et la Bête Le Shlemil Théâtre, Ensemble Contrastewith Frank Groothof directors: Cécile Roussat en Julien Lubek

Enchanting, poetic and funny, that’s the core of this show based on Grétry’s comédie-ballet from 1771, Zémire et Azor ou la Belle et la Bête. Choreographer Cécile Roussat (Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, Festival 2004) together with dancer and mime Julien Lubek created the perfect marriage between music, dance, mime and acrobatics.

Ensemble À deux violes esgalesMusic for two violas da gamba

Two violas da gamba was a favorite combination, and the specialty of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, who left a manuscript with 67 pieces for gamba duo. It also inspired Dubuisson, Hotman and Marais, who in turn get the two players of À deux violes esgales go-ing, who will bring their son Thomas Dunford to play the theorbo.

Israel GolaniguitarLouis’ favorite instrument

During the early 17th century, the French considered the guitar to be a lowly instrument. That is, until Louis XIV picks it up at age five and unleashes a new courtly vogue. This programme shows both sides of the guitar: country dances and courtly suites, as well as anonymous arrangements of opera fragments by Rameau and Lully.

Il suonar parlante with Vittorio GhielmiTombeaux

None other than Virgil taught us: descending into In-ferno is easy, escaping it is sheer impossible. Il suonar parlante touches on the deepest layers of melancholy in their performance of a number of Tombeaux, a favorite musical monument to say goodbye to a loved one, dead or not.

Leçons de ténèbres

The best music is melancholy music – nowhere else is this as clear as in the genre of the Leçons de ténèbres. The basis for these compositions are nine excerpts from the Lam-entations of the prophet Jeremiah, bemoaning the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple and the exodus of the Jews. Traditionally, these texts were sung in plainchant in the monasteries in preparation for Easter, but starting in the 15th century composers begun creating a polyphonic repertoire. Without doubt, their most beautiful incarnations were written in 17th- and 18th-century France, where they became the elaborate Leçons de ténèbres as breathtakingly envisioned by the best composers. And once the services featuring these Leçons were moved from after midnight to the afternoon, they became the society events of month. Each Ténèbres concert will feature a short newly-written composition by Daan Manneke, Bart Visman, Anthony Fiumara, Boudewijn Tarenskeen and Max Knigge.

The Hemsch harpsichord is a unique guest for no less than six recitals during the Festival. But where did this instrument come from, what makes it special, and most of all: who was this Jean-Henry Hemsch? These and other questions will be fully answered by builder Anthony Sidey and performer Frédérick Haas, who will give some sound examples.

With Les Nations, Couperin tried to reconcile various national styles, since he would have nothing to do with one of the French’s most characteristic traits: cultural xenophobia. Couperin, Lambert & Campra

Dutch baritone Maarten Koningsberger was one of the stars in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie alongside Eugénie Warnier last year, in a production led by Jed Wentz. This concert the two men will devote to the French song, starting with lyrical airs de cour by Michel Lambert, to the elaborate and refined Baroque canta-tas of André Campra..

Les Nouveaux Caractèreswith Sébastien d’HérinSoloists: Karine Deshayes, Jean Sébastien Bou, Caroline Mutel, Mathias Vidal Rameau: Les surprises de l’Amour (1748, excerpts)

This joyous opéra-ballet was commisioned by Mad-ame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, who herself took on one of the roles. The libretto is a tangle of confusion, but Cupid always save the day. Les Nouveaux Caractères is an excellent example of the new generation of French musicians, performing this rarely heard music with vigour.

After Louis Couperin’s death in 1661, Nicolas Hotman took over as Louis XIV’s personal musician. His Pièces de théorbe are among the first great works for the instrument in France. Enthusiasm grew through the works of Robert de Visée, who successfully arranged music by Couperin and Lully. In this concert, Fred Jacobs plays a reconstructed théorbe français.

Local and international partners Deciding on the Pandhof as the new Festival centre, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht chose a heart right in the city centre. The garden, surrounded by the Dom, Academiege-bouw and Dom Square are an ideal backdrop for the heritage the Festival stands for. During the Festival, the entrance to the cloists will even get a golden touch thanks to an intervention by visual artists Jan de Jonge and Henk van der Feest, sup-ported by City Marketing Utrecht.

By opening the doors of their Pandhof, Utrecht University, marks the start of a renewed collobartion with the Festival. In the very near future, the relationship will be even closer when the Humanities faculty and the Festival will co-sponsor a yearly fellowship for a promising researcher/performer who will teach and also curate the STIMU sympsium.

Culturesfrance and Maison Descartes are the worldwide keepers of France’s cultural heritage. This year, thanks to the unprecented concentration of French musicians in Utrecht, they have decided to support the Festival as one of their central cultural activities for 2010. Another example how the Festival aims to be anchored: internationally, nationally but also firmly in the province and city of Utrecht.

Made in Holland: showcase early music (in Dutch)

Utrecht may be the world’s biggest and most internation-ally oriented early music festival, quality doesn’t have to be found far away. Wednesday 1 September, Muziek Centrum Nederland hosts a showcase during the Festival Oude Muziek, aimed at programmers, agents and other music professionals. Five mostly young Dutch early music groups show how early music can fit any concert season. To start the afternoon, attendees can take part in a seminar explain-ing how to best include early music, since it’s all in the art of presentation. The showcases and the seminar are free for professionals, and the Festival invites them to attend the Holland Baroque Society concert later that day in Vreden-burg Leidsche Rijn. To sign up, please visit www.mcn.nl.

Even though almost a million Dutch vacantioners visit la douce France every year, both countries have a hard time understanding eachother. In a serious but lively debate, several guests who should know will try to pinpoint the basic differences. Until the sixties, the Netherlands were enamored with France, so where did it go wrong?

The 18th century saw the rise of the salon as a stage for the most interesting musicians of their time. Jean-Paul Fouchécourt is the ideal singer for this especially refined and spirited genre.

Montmartre harbored Paris’ most worldly convent. Here, daughters from the city’s wealthy class received their education. Eugène FerréluteThe lute’s last song

Before the harpsichord won the hearts and minds of the French, the lute was the foremost instrument for intimate situations. Denis Gaultier and his students François Dufaut and Jacques Gallot were the stars of the Paris salons, where their dance suites and free compositions proved a final flourishing for the instru-ment.

Susanne Rydén, sopranoPaulina van Laarhoven, viola da gambaKarl Nyhlin, luteLeçons de ténèbres: Lalande, Manneke

As Louis XIV moved into the Versailles palace in 1683, Lalande became the head of the royal chapel as his favorite composer. The grand motet was his strong suit, and several dozens can still be enjoyed, but of Leçons de ténèbres he left us only three: delicate music for soprano solo showing a different side from this versatile composer.

Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles

Since 1987, France boasts a top-class early music institute: the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV) defends the immense musical heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries, bringing together researchers and performers in an operation to document, publish, teach and perform French music. From the beginning, individual composers have received the most thorough attention, starting with Jean-Baptiste Lully, resulting in music publications, concerts and opera performances and CD recordings. In over 20 years, the oeuvres of Charpentier, Du Mont, Lalande, Campra, Marais, Rameau, Mondonville, Clérambault, François Couperin, Gossec and many others have thus been unlocked.

The centre has as its base the restored Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs, formerly the office of the forces behind the spectacles of Ver-sailles. Often, their own ensembles like Les Pages & les Chantres were the first to present new discoveries on stage.

For the 2010 edition, dedicated to Louis XIV and his family, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht has entered in a close partnership with the CMBV. In this collaboration, resulting in a number of productions, the two institutions have found strong partners in each other.www.cmbv.fr

Ensemble Jacques Moderne with Joël SuhubietteCaurroy, Le Jeune: Masses

Starting with Henry IV, the French kings were born to the grave under the sounds of Eustache du Caurroy’s Messe des morts (1590). This magnificent opus would, however, be the last example of the ‘old’ polyphonic style in France. Soon, less complicated music would be written, like le Jeune’s Messe ad placitum (1607).

After the fall of the Bastille in 1789, proponents and detractors of the monarchy adopted song to vent their feelings, such as the Complainte de Louis XVI to the tune of Père Jacob, and on the other side the Hymne pour le 14 juillet by Philidor. Les Lunaisiens pay a moving tribute to the revolutionary chanson.

Free fringe concerts

Outside of the official programme, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht offers numerous free fringe concerts every day, performed by young musicians, some still in their studies, some starting out their career in early music. These concerts are a welcome addition to the already charged Festival schedule and may be a step towards a concert in the official programme of Festival or Season. The concerts take place in historic venues all over the historic centre and last generally 45 minutes. Due to the often very small venues, free tickets must be obtained at the Festival Box Office (max. 2 per person) on the day of the concert. Afterwards, the musicians will ask for a voluntary contribution. The complete fringe programme will be published on www.oudemuziek.nl, as well as in the August issue of the Magazine and the pocket-sized Festival overview.

Early Music from October through May Can you not wait until the start of a new Festival Oude Muziek? Well, you don’t have to, because our concert season 10/11, starting in October, offers a wide range of repertoires and artists until May 2011. 19 tours will visit some 40 concert venues throughout the Netherlands and Flanders, making a season of 114 early music concerts from Machaut to Schu-mann. The performers can be making their debut, or be world-famous, but al-ways fascinating and of the highest level. We offer, among others, Philippe Her-reweghe’s Collegium Vocale Gent, the Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam and Trio Hantaï. In connection with the Festival, the season has taken on a French Ba-roque accent with performances by harp-sichordist Aurélien Delage, ensemble Au-sonia and Frédérick Haas, Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien and gamba duo Les Voix humaines. For Amsterdam and Utrecht, we’ve put together a day entirely devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as a special series of concerts in five picturesque castles combines a guided tour and a concert.

Hard to believe, but true: only recently, all of Swee-linck’s vocal works have been completely recorded. Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam was praised for the three editions that have so far seen the light. This concert is a colorful selection from the oeuvre of the Orpheus of Amsterdam, ranging from devout psalms and motets to passionate madrigals.

Guillaume de MachautLe Remède de Fortune

Without doubt, Guillaume de Machaut was the most famour composer-poet of the 14th century. Hij wrote his Remède de Fortune to remember a Bohemian princess who had died of the plague. The recording of this piece by these medievalist, a hypnotising perfor-mance, was recently awarded a prestitgious Diapason d’Or.

Playing with light and shadow, Ausonia and French harpsichordist Frédérick Haas will highlight music by two François: Francoeur composed next to his theatre music two collections of the finest violin sonatas that form a delicious contrast with the characteristic pièces de clavecin by Couperin.

Romantic music for windsReicha, Danzi, Onslow, Crusell

Anton Reicha is the godfather of the wind quintet, after he introduced the genre in Paris in 1820. His expressive style was a clear inspiration for his students: Berlioz, Liszt and Gounod would grow to be the avant-garde of the romantic period. Osmosis places this Czech innova-tor among his contemporaries.

Bach en ballesLute music with balls

Bach’s lute oeuvre is just two hours long, but size says nothing. The music is incredibly complicated, and playing these arrangements of music for different instruments asks everything from tis performer. This unlikely duo of a musician and a juggling artist repre-sents the highest level of virtuosity in both fields.

J.S. Bach: Art of the Fugue

In his Art of the Fugue Bach struck a delightful balance between creative erudition and musical pleasure. He just left us the notes: of the instrument supposed to play them he said nothing. Il suonar parlante took up the challenge and performs Bach’s final large work with a quartet of viols and a Silbermann piano – an innovation that pleased Bach at the end of his life.

The Schumanns at the Dutch court Songs and duets

When the Schumanns visited the Netherlands in 1853, they found an enthousiastic and lively audience. In The Hague they tied a friendship with the gifted Madeleine Gräver, a court musician to queen Sophie. The young ladies of Trio Luscinia couldn’t resist and play some of her music, as well as works by Clara and Robert Schumann themselves.

This season, we’re proud to present the new ensem-ble around violin star Sophie Gent. They make their debut with 17th-century English court music by Lawes and Jenkins. The first wrote music as capricious as his short life – he died outside of battle during the Civil War – while the latter reached a very high age, bridging the gap between the Renaissance consort and the Baroque sonata.

In mynen zyn Polyfonie by Alexander Agricola

15ht-century polyphonist Alexander Agricola based his Missa In mynen zyn on one of his own love songs: a craftful work that is a strong match for his inge-nious Marian motets. Capilla Flamenca invited an accordeonist to incarnate Agricola and show how a chanson can grow into a four-part mass through invention, improvisation and composition.

1725, Napels: after the death of the great Alessandro Scarlatti, his final instrumental pieces were carefully collected in a manuscript, which also contained music by two other composers. Masterful music by Sainte-Colombe and Marin Marais, his best student, are paired with works by famous contemporaries.

Et la fleur vole17th-century dance tunes by Ballard, Guédron etc.

Dance tunes are timeless: their contagious melodies, texts and dance patterns have always brought together all layers of society. In the early 1600s, they were a huge influence on the more refined airs de cour, so it is fitting to put the two traditi-ons side by side. The young Musicians de Saint-Julien mix up country and court.

Partnerships

Over the years, our concert season has developed into strong partnerships all over the Netherlands and Flanders. This year, two further partners have been added to the list. The Palais des Beaux-Arts BOZAR in Brussels, as Belgium’s largest concert hall, has been working for years on their early music programming. Offering residencies to Philippe Herreweghe, Paul Van Nevel, Philippe Pierlot and Jos van Immerseel, BOZAR has taken a central position on the Eu-ropean early music stage. Their association with the Festival Oude Muziek and concert season is a token of appreciation and a sign of international engagement. Another partnership has been concluded with the Amster-dam Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. This concert hall promotes a rich musical offering with a keen eye for the current devel-opments. Early music stands proudly next to music from today, a deep relationship that will be confirmed in a lang-lasting collaboration between both institutions.

Subscriptions and seriesIn the Festival, several series are available, as well as a large number of subscriptions per (combined) venue in the season. During the season, it is especially inter-esting to visit concerts in different venues: if you order tickets for at least 4 concerts in the season, we’ll give you a 15% discount (valid for every person ordering 4 or more concerts). When you order online, please use the reduction code to activate this discount. Zones and placingA number of venues has different zones, where ‘Rang A’ offers the best view of the musicians, while ‘Rang B’ are usually the somewhat less attractive seats. In the Festival, most concerts are sold per zone, area and seat, however lectures, workshops, several concerts and almost all concerts in the season are sold without placing. Your ticket will always reflect this.
