Wonderful happenings at Wenty—Harmony Day!

In Week 9 our school and community celebrated Harmony Day. Mrs Gill and her team organised a

marvellous event and it was so pleasing to see so many students participate in the day and celebrate

their cultural heritage. We had two marvellous dance performances by 10 girls doing a Bollywood item

and all of Kindergarten performing a song and dance that Mrs Hatter has been teaching the students

during their Creative Arts lessons.

An excerpt from my 2017 Harmony Day Principal Address …

“…Welcome to our celebration of Harmony Day 2017 at WPS.

Thank you for coming parents and being a part of today – despite the

weather! Thank you students for getting into the spirit of Harmony Day

and coming in your national dress of your country or a touch of orange – Harmony Day’s colour!

In 2017 the theme of Harmony Day is ‘Strength

in Harmony ’. Harmony Day celebrates Austral-

ia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness,

respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

It gives us the opportunity as a community to:

Celebrate our cohesive, culturally diverse

society

Promote inclusiveness

Respect each other’s heritage and

Develop a sense of belonging

We have a community here at school who were either born in Australia or born overseas and now call

Australia home. We have the opportunity to promote respect, exhibit tolerance and develop our

understanding of cultural diversity. We have students / families from 92% Language Backgrounds Other than

English (LBOTE) and we are represented by over 40 languages, with Tamil, Gujarati and Hindi and as the top

3 languages spoken within our community.

This is indeed our strength as a school! …”

ANZAC Day Assembly – A time to reflect and remember

Today we were led by our wonderful student leaders in our important ANZAC assembly here at

Wentworthville Public School. We were joined by special guests and students from each class laid a

wreath in remembrance. It provided us a time to remember those who have served our country.

This is a gift from Mr Brian Furner to the

school. A picture for our school library.

ANZAC day is gaining greater significance

across the nation. Each year the number of those attending ANZAC

day ceremonies across the country is steadily increasing. The

number of ceremonies has increased not just in Australia or Gallipoli,

but across the world where Australian troops are posted.

Next term on the first Tuesday, April 25, will be the day we celebrate

ANZAC day. We will all come back to school on the following day

Wednesday – April 26.

I encourage you to be present at ceremonies or at least watch the Sydney ANZAC march on the TV –

and get a sense of all the people who have gone before us.

Let us remember:

war is never celebrated; and

let us be thankful for those who have bravely served our country and courageously fought for our

freedoms and the things we value in this great country.

Lest we forget

This year Stage 2 will be going to Camp Yarramundi.

This will a two day, one night ADVENTURE! This camp

reinforces programs studied at school and will develop your

child’s social, physical and emotional development. It complements our PD/H/PE

program at school.

Students will be engaged in a variety of activities both outdoors and indoors which seek to improve their

self esteem, independence, leadership skills and appreciation of nature.

Students learn to work as part of a team, develop friendships and develop habits for an active healthy

lifestyle. This will be a memorable and rewarding experience for your child.

Stage 2 teachers are excited about this wonderful opportunity we are providing for every child in Stage 2.

This camp will occur on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th September 2017. The cost of this camp will be

$187.00 per student - all inclusive.

To secure a place for your child you will need to complete the permission note and pay a deposit of

$30.00. If you would like to view the note, please go to the ’School Notes’ section of the school website.

In Week 10 Stage 3 conducted three-way interviews to enable students to set their own goals for the

year. To enable us to improve future three-way interviews we would appreciate your feedback.

Parents of Stage 3 students please go to the link below to complete the survey.

From the Learning and Support Team

The Learning and Support Team regularly get asked by parents “How can I help my child with reading

at home?” This is an excellent question to ask because reading is a fundamental skill that is used

across all key learning areas. Regardless of your child’s current reading level or age we encourage all

parents to read with their children every day. This may include many things:

Reading a book with your child

Reading a book to your child

Having your child read to you

Reading from the internet

Talking with your child about what they are reading

Reading information in the environment on your way home

Visit the local library to explore a wide variety of books

Read in English and in your home language

By taking an active role in your child’s reading activities you are promoting positive reading habits

which will stay with them for the rest of their lives and support continually development of reading

skills. Please read the article later on in this newsletter with some tips for ‘reading with your child at

home’ from the school A to Z website. Please take a moment to read it and enjoy reading with your

child.

This year the support unit staff are taking part in the Walk for Autism to raise funds for Autism Spectrum

Australia. Each staff member will attempt to walk 10,000 steps a day which is approximately 8 kilometres

between the 2nd and 9th of April. The funds raised will help provide support services for young people

with Autism and their families. People with Autism are some of the most amazing people you will ever

meet and we are proud to not only raise funds to support them but help raise awareness of Autism.

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects, among other things, the way an individual

relates to his or her environment and their interaction with other people. As a team we are privileged to

work with students with Autism and see firsthand the inspirational contributions they make to the

Wentworthville Public School community. If you see the team in their green shirts stop by to ask how

they are going and if you would like to donate you can follow this link to Team Wenty.

Thank you for your support.

COMPONENT 2 – Social and Emotional Learning

Each week a useful article will appear in the newsletter to assist parents in

developing their child’s social and emotional skills. This term students have learnt

about the five social and emotional competencies:

1. Self-awareness - The ability to accurately recognise one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and

how they influence behaviour. The ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitations, with a

well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”

2. 2. Self-management - The ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in

different situations by effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. The

ability to set and work toward personal and academic goals.

3. Social awareness - The ability to take the perspective of and empathise with others, including those

from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

4. Relationship skills - The ability to establish and maintain healthy and

rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. The ability to

communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate

social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when

needed.

5. Responsible decision-making - The ability to make constructive choices

about personal behaviour and social interactions based on ethical standards

and safety concerns The realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and a considera-

tion of the well-being of oneself and others.
