Reception to Year 1   The main difference between Reception and Year 1 is the

change of curriculum.

Previously your child has been following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and being assessed against the 7 Key Areas of Learning.

In Year 1 your child will progress from these 7 Areas of Learning, to the National Curriculum subjects for Key Stage 1.

The children are taught the National Curriculum subjects in both differentiated and mixed ability groups.

Reading   There are lots of things you can do at home to help your child with

their learning. One of the most important is helping with reading and making sure that they bring their book bags to school every day.

The children will work through different, levelled books that will be sent home in their reading folders. If you read at home or complete the book then please make a note in their reading diary and we will send a new one home the next day.

We encourage children to put their folder in the changing box when their book needs changing and we will send a new book home.

We assess children’s reading when needed, using PM Benchmarking. This takes into account their reading fluency, decoding and comprehension. If they pass the level they will then move on to the next book.

Phonics  Phase 4 - consolidates all the sounds the children

have learnt in the previous phases and helps them to read and spell words with adjacent consonants such as tr-a-p, t-e-nt.

Phase 5 -   Children will be taught new graphemes and alternative

pronunciations for these graphemes.

Vowel digraphs: wh, ph, ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, ew, oe, au

  Split digraphs: a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e

Phonics   Help them with these sounds when you read

together and reinforce the letter sounds from Reception.

Some tricky words (school, said) cannot be ‘decoded’ so need to be learnt by sight to help them build up their bank of vocabulary and help them to become more fluent readers.

In June your child will complete a Phonics Screening Check. It is designed to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra phonics help.

The checks consist of 40 words and non-words (pseudo) that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher.

Spellings & Homework   After half term we will have a weekly spelling test.

Our spelling scheme is taught alongside phonics in KS1.

Children in each ability group will have 5 spellings to learn each week. Spellings will be given out weekly on a Friday to be learnt for a spelling test the following Thursday.

Alongside these spellings there is the Year 1 ‘common exception word list’ (found in the front of your child’s homework book) which all Year 1 children should be able to read and spell by the end of Year 1.

There will also be weekly homework tasks for Literacy, Numeracy or Science/Topic related work, which will be given out on a Friday to be completed by the following Thursday.

General Information   Fruit is provided at playtimes but children can bring

their own in if they wish.

Full P.E. kit is required all year round. Please ensure that it is all named.

Children may bring a colouring book and crayons in for wet playtimes. These can be left in their tray.

Please name/label all cardigans and jumpers. We encourage the children to put them in their tray or bag when they are not wearing them (but they often grow legs and disappear!) Should your child lose any item of clothing we have a lost property bag in our cloakroom.

General Information   Every Friday afternoon in Year 1 we have ‘Show and Tell.’

Each week a Literacy group will take turns to bring in an object, toy or something special that they would like to share with the class. Show and Tell is completely voluntary and there is no pressure on the children to bring something in.

If your child is going to be collected by a different adult or is going home with a friend please let me know in the morning or send in a note.
