Zhongguo is haar eerste roman.

Chinatown Amsterdam bestaat ruim honderd jaar.

Rich Mingins (1916-1968) is considered to be one of the biggest tattoo-artists of all time. Not much is known about this enigmatic artist. He was a quiet man, smoking all the time while working in a small room in the back of his house at 59 Redfern Road, Harleston, in London, while his wife busied herself in the kitchen. And yet, Mingins work was extremely popular at his time. His artistic work and custom designs were of high quality, and really stood apart from work of other tattooists.
Mingins’ daughter Margaret donated his legacy (photo books, scrapbooks, drawings etc.) to the recently established Amsterdam Tattoo Museum of Dutch tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher. This first publication is a facsimile edition of a book with photos, collected by Mingins himself, some of them with handwritten captions. Hundreds of people proudly show their tattoos on almost every part of their body. The images provide a wonderful overview of the world of tattoo dur-ing the first half of the 20th century.
The photos are preceded by a short English-language introduction to Mingins and his work. Here, among other things, it is shown that at-titudes towards tattooing changed through time and that these colourful images were not only the ‘ poor man’s jewelry’, but were also appreci-ated by members of the royal elite in Europe as well as women and girls of the higher classes.

Sommige
In
verantwoorde dragers groeit gestaag.

The dream of a better world. And to act upon itTrailblazers, a sequel to Nine Lives, is an odyssey that takes you around the world. It presents stories of eleven human rights defenders whose lives reflect Gandhi’s notion ‘you must be the change you wish to see in the world.’ Nations, like individuals, have their whims and peculia-rities. But what if the cost of those whims becomes unbearable?
These testimonies have one thing in common: the local illustrates the global. The Inuit story illustrates global warming. The Sahrawi story illustrates that totalitarianism is alive and well. The Ecuadorian story illustrates why corporate social responsibility must be taken seriously – all the way to the courthouse. In the end, the truth will come out. Sometimes, the last straw is nothing other than yourself.
Peter Braaksma, author of Nine Lives: Making the Impossible Possible, has worked as an editor in Britain and as a communication adviser and corporate journalist in the Netherlands, focusing on human rights, the environment and (corporate) social responsibility.

The return of cultural and historical treasures touches on a number of political and cultural issues, and often inspires controversy. As the world is changing, the concept of return is changing as well. The shrinking divisions be-tween a poor South and a rich North, colonizer and colonized, and source countries and art and antique market countries impact our thinking about return. How do Dutch heritage institu-tions deal with this new reality, when the return of their objects or collections comes under dis-cussion? That is the central question in this critical book.
In The Return of Cultural and Historical Treasures: The Case of the Netherlands, Jos van
Beurden researches cases in which the Dutch state and Dutch heritage institutions have been handing over cultural and historical treasures that were acquired in colonial times and more recently. He investigates the dynamics of their return practice and gives his analysis extra depth by including cases in which return has not mate-rialized. The most remarkable of these is that of a keris or traditional sword of Indonesia’s na-tional hero Diponegoro. Where is it? In addition to library study, many heritage directors and experts have been interviewed. That makes The Return of Cultural and Historical Treasures: The Case of the Netherlands an indispensable addi-tion to the literature about return by the Nether-lands of Nazi-spoliated art and human remains.

This is the fourth volume of a series of ten books that discuss the Tropenmuseum collections and the histories and the stories that accompany them. The books reveal the often hidden backgrounds of these collections, discussing objects within their original context, social histories and their contemporary meaning. The main emphasis lies on the history of each collection, with their different collecting and presentation practices placed in a particular time and place. Each volume is richly illustrated with objects and photographs from the Tropen-museum collection.
Photographs of the Netherlands East Indies at the Tropenmuseum offers a comprehensive introduction to one of the most important collections of photographs in the world. In fact, none of the other Tropenmuseum collections are so closely tied to the history of the institute itself. Photographs were already being collected in the late nineteenth century and have been continuously supplemented with new images to create the broadest possible perspective of topical developments in the Netherlands East Indies. After Indonesia declared its independence in 1945, the importance of the collection of historic photographs declined and it was consigned to obscurity. Interest in the collection blossomed again later when a large group of people in the Netherlands came to view them as reflecting a lost and increasingly
romanticised society. From the 1980s the collection was increasingly used as a source of historical information and the subject of wide-scale academic research.

A natural history
Hajo BPE Gernaat, Borgesius G. Beckles, Tinde van Andel
Butterflies of Suriname: a natural history is the first book on Surinamese butterflies since 160 years and the results of six years of research by the authors. After introductory chapters on the plants, rainforest and the various habitats of Suriname, the biology of butterflies is discussed and the rich history of their study. This is followed by a detailed description of 150 species from all families. Appendices contain additional information on Maria Sybilla Merian, Pieter Cramer and glossaries of local names of animals and plants, as well as of technical terms. With almost 300 photographs and figures in the text, nearly all especially made in Suriname for this book, and more than 600 photographs on 52 plates, this book should be read by every Surinamese, interested biologist, tourist and other lover of the nature of Suriname.

Setting up a social and environmentally sustainable business is hard work. Most entrepreneurs struggle to raise investment capital and make a small profit. Carbon credits can be a welcome source of additional revenue for those businesses and projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But where do you start? Practical information that is easy to apply to your specific situation is hard to find. The information you can find is often either too general, or full of complicated terminology. Hiring an expert is risky without an indication of whether you will be able to earn the money back. As a result many entrepreneurs are discouraged and never properly explore the possibilities of carbon credits, or get stuck somewhere in the process. This book is a beginner’s guide for entre-preneurs who want to assess whether they can generate additional revenue with carbon credits. It provides a concise overview of the basics of carbon credits with a minimum of jargon, and illustrated with practical examples from real cases. This book addresses these questions in a way that is relevant to a wide variety of project types. Particular attention is given to the challenges of smaller projects in developing countries as well as forestry, agroforestry and biofuel projects.

and what influences these? Who are the different players in the industry, and what do they do?
What are the different steps in the development of a carbon offset project? How do I choose a
certification standard? How can I estimate the amount of carbon credits and revenue I can
generate?
This book addresses these questions in a way that is relevant to a wide variety of project types.
Particular attention is given to the challenges of smaller projects in developing countries as well

The agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa badly needs to find new ways of doing things if agricultural development is to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation. This is not only about introducing new technologies to farmers. It is also, even more importantly, about changes in the way old and new technologies, ideas and initiatives are put into practice – as well as how different actors work (together) to stimulate innovation. This book takes a look at platforms that have been set up in order to trigger such change.
However, little is known about how innovation platforms actually operate. This book brings together twelve stories from the field about creating and working with innovation platforms in Africa. It is the result of practitioners putting their heads together to analyse their experiences, and to draw lessons from them. This joint analysis provides insights into how innovation platforms (can) work and different options available to them, and also offers suggestions on how to deal with their main common challenges.

The agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa badly needs to find new ways of doing thingsif agricultural development is to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation. This isnot only about introducing new technologies to farmers. It is also, even more importantly, about changes in the way old and new technologies, ideas and initiatives are put intopractice – as well as how different actors work (together) to stimulate innovation. Thisbook takes a look at platforms that have been set up in order to trigger such change.
Agricultural innovation platforms were set up to provide space for negotiation, planningand action, by bringing together different stakeholders working towards a common goal– be it for the promotion of conservation agriculture, to enhance market access to oilpalm, or to stimulate the production and sale of local chicken breeds.
However, little is known about how innovation platforms actually operate. This book bringstogether twelve stories from the field about creating and working with innovation platforms inAfrica. It is the result of practitioners putting their heads together to analyse their experiences, and to draw lessons from them. This joint analysis provides insights into how innovationplatforms (can) work and different options available to them, and also offers suggestions onhow to deal with their main common challenges.
The book takes learnings from the different cases to respond to three critical questions:• What are important options for the design of innovation platforms? Practitioners have
shared their thoughts on how platforms can be initiated, how they operate and whatroles different stakeholders can play.
• What can brokers do to bring different stakeholders together and to agree on actions? To catalyse innovation, certain individuals or organisations in the platform have deliberatelytaken on the role of broker. Experiences in this book show that a specific set of skillsis needed for this key function.
• How can innovation platforms contribute to the livelihoods of producers? Measuringimpact is difficult, but the cases show different outcomes resulting from innovationplatforms, and share many lessons on how to make the positive outcomes sustainableover time.
This publication is written from the perspective of practitioners for practitioners. It providesnew information on the performance of innovation platforms in developing countries, offersoptions to policy makers, and gives inspiration to all actors involved in one way or anotherin stimulating innovation in the agricultural sector.

As smallholder farmers switch to producing for the commercial market, they face a steep learning curve. To select a product and to market it effectively, they must understand both their immediate market situation and how the whole value chain works. Individual smallholders probably cannot grow enough on their own, so they have to get organized and sell their produce as a group. That takes leadership, organization, mutual trust and a common vision. They need to access a range of business services: inputs, financial services, training, market information, transport, government support, and so on. And they need to plan their businesses: analyze their potential markets, identify customers, negotiate with buyers and suppliers, work out their costs and expected income, look at their longer term position in the value chain, develop a business plan, and put the plan into operation. How best to help groups of smallholders to gain these skills? This book describes a “learning alliance” approach that combines training, practical assignments to develop an enterprise, on-the-job coaching, and the sharing of experiences among several groups of farmers. The approach was piloted in Ethiopia from 2007 to 2010 with 18 groups of farmers in Amhara, Oromia, the Southern Nations, Nationalities and

How best to help groups of smallholders to gain these skills? This book describes a “learning alliance” approach that combines training, practical assignments to develop an enterprise, on-the-job coaching, and the sharing of experiences among several groups of farmers. The approach was piloted in Ethiopia from 2007 to 2010 with 18 groups of farmers in Amhara, Oromia, the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNPR) regional states. It covered a wide range of commodities, from staple grains to dairy, coffee, legumes, honey and incense.
Where normal training courses impart skills that farmers fi nd hard to apply to their own situation and soon forget, the learning alliance enables them to apply new skills to their own situations, reinforces their new knowledge, and gives them hands-on, guided experience with building their own businesses. That makes a learning alliance a highly effective way of enabling farmers to build their businesses in a sustainable way.
