  • One of our long-time team members surprised uswhen she stated this was her biggest fear. She is oftenasked her opinion inside and outside of ourorganization and is terrified that she will say somethingwrong or have a terrible idea and look bad in front ofothers. This fear is about wanting to be viewed asintelligent and not wanting to appear ignorant. PatrickLencioni says that “naked” service providers admitwhen they don't know something. They celebrateerrors because protecting their egos is not as importantas helping others. While discussing this fear, this same team memberfinally acknowledged that some of the best ideas wehave implemented as a company have come fromsome of the craziest ideas and suggestions from ourteam. These ideas created invaluable solutions whenre-evaluated in the right light. Not every idea isnecessarily a good one, but there is always somethingto be learned from them. As recently as last week, Ioffered up an idea and our team shot it down. Theywere right, of course, so to save face I simply said, “Isaid it was an idea, not a GOOD idea!” That’s hard to do,but I’ve learned its healthy to have your team membersnot fear retribution from the “Boss.” This fear is one that, for some reason, our professionappears to struggle with. I have been involved with themedical community for years, and my practice is on thecampus of a spine center. I’ve served as the StaffChiropractor at the VA Medical Center. I've had theopportunity to lecture to pain management residentsand neurosurgery residents at the University MedicalCenter. I have come face to face with feeling inferiormany times, and here is what I learned. 1

Getting Naked – A New Approach to Customer

    Service?

I have no doubt that the title of this article caught yourattention. It certainly caught the attention of our team lastmonth when they were assigned to read the book GettingNaked by Patrick Lencioni as part of their monthly personaland professional development. As one of our teammembers shared, "things are about to get uncomfortable."She meant it as a joke, but as the team discussed the book, they learned that she wasn't far off the mark. In this book, Patrick Lencioni describes an unconventionalapproach to improving customer loyalty: vulnerability. Thebook, a business fable, illustrates the three fears that trulysabotage our success and prevent us from developingcustomer (or patient) loyalty. Although we can all relate toeach of the three fears, each person on our team couldquickly identify which fear resonated the most in their ownlife. This is a fear that we can all relate to. What I hadn't realizedwas that my fear of losing business was getting in the wayof new opportunities.  Ultimately, it enabled me to continueavoiding difficult issues or problems within my practice. Oneof the best lessons from the book teaches that we need tobe focused on helping our patients, versus looking at themas a revenue source. Whether we want to admit it or not(and we don't), we can find ourselves makingrecommendations based on what insurance covers and notnecessarily what our patients need. One example of this is not recommending therapy toMedicare patients because it is a non-covered service. I’veheard it said before that the moment you want the care forthe patient more than they do, you’ve lost your credibilityand they may sense desperation. Recommend the bestcare, all the care you truly feel they need from a clinicalperspective, and let them choose to move forward, or bewilling to dismiss them. That takes guts, especially whenyou need to pay the bills, but it will make you moreconfident in your recommendations and send a clearmessage that you won’t play “Let’s Make a Deal” with theircare plan.

WE underestimate ourselves. Our training and knowledgeare on par or above many specialties when it comes toneuromusculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment. To combatfeeling inferior, we shouldn’t project superior intellectualpride, but we should project confidence and competence toour patients and other health care providers. Each fear discussed in Lencioni’s book is accompanied bylessons on how to overcome that fear. These lessons canshow you how to help your patients and grow your practice.Although this book was not written for healthcareprofessionals, it can easily be adapted to your practice witha little thought and effort. For example, referring to the fearof losing business, one of the principals says to "give awaythe business." Don’t literally donate your practice, but bewilling to share your knowledge and expertise. As one of the most regulated systems in our country, wecannot give free or discounted services to our patients. Thatwould be an inducement violation. However, there are otherthings that we can do. A good friend of mine told me hefrequently gives talks around his community about ways totreat common injuries such as sprains and strains at home.He has videos that show stretches, talks about when to useheat and ice, and always lets his audience know to see theirhealthcare provider if a condition becomes worse or doesn'timprove after a few days. By showing his community how totreat themselves at home, he receives tons of referrals to hispractice from patients who heard him speak or saw hisvideos. Getting Naked is about embracing vulnerability, which is farmore complicated than one would think. Focusing on thetakeaways in this book and adopting a sense of selflessnessin every encounter with your friends, family, colleagues, employees, and patients, has the potential to dramaticallyimprove all areas of your life, both personally andprofessionally. I encourage you to read or download thebook today and start your journey to “Getting Naked.”

  • Our team travelled to Railway General Hospital, inRawalpindi, Pakistan to do this study, and the carethe patients received was a single session of fullspine adjustments of vertebral subluxations thatwere located and analysed through a thoroughchiropractic assessment. The analysis of the data we collected showed anaverage improvement in strength of almost 65%of the affected leg of these stroke patients. The Vwave and H reflex analysis suggested that thesestrength changes were due to changes in the waytheir brain was driving the muscles as opposed tochanges in spinal cord excitability. These findingsare ground-breaking for our profession becausethey suggest that chiropractic care may be ofbenefit to patients with a brain injury! If you wantto read the full study just follow this linkwww.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-39577-5. Our stroke study was a collaborative effortbetween our team from the CCR at the NewZealand College of Chiropractic, and researchersfrom Riphah International University and NationalUniversity of Science and Technology in Pakistan, the University of North Texas Health ScienceCentre, USA, and Koc University, Turkey. We’reparticularly grateful to the wonderful people whomade this study possible by funding the project. The United Chiropractic Association in the UK wasthe major contributor, and their funding wasfacilitated by the Australian Spinal ResearchFoundation, so a big thanks to these great peopleas well. A huge thank you also goes to the HalsaChiropractic & Physiotherapy Group, the RubiconGroup, the Scottish Chiropractic Association, theHamblin Chiropractic Research Fund Trust and ofcourse you, our very own CCR SupportersProgramme members who also provided fundingfor this study!!! This was a group effort indeed! 8

10 May 2019 Dear Members at Colorado Chiropractic Association Thank you for donating to our Supporters Programme atthe Centre for Chiropractic Research (CCR)! We are proudto say that 2019 is off to a great start. The team havealready presented our research internationally at severalkey chiropractic conferences, including ACC-RAC inBaltimore, USA and the WFC Congress in Berlin, Germany. We have also published our stroke study in a high-rankingresearch journal which is a great achievement for theteam. We are really proud of the impact we are having inthe world of chiropractic research… and in a nutshell…without your support we simply couldn’t do this work!Funding is an ever-present challenge, and traditionalfunding sources are increasingly difficult to obtain. Werely on donations from people like you, to help us tocontinue to produce the quality research that we areknown for. It’s really important to keep on exploring themechanisms and effects of chiropractic care on brainfunction, performance, health, wellbeing, and quality oflife. We are committed to do this and are passionateabout the work we are doing. In case you haven’t heardabout it already I wanted to take this opportunity to letyou know about our latest ground-breaking strokepublication that has been making waves around theworld.. Our ‘stroke study’ was recently published in ScientificReports, a high impact factor journal from the Naturepublishing group. This exciting study showed that a singlesession of chiropractic care increased muscle strengthand cortical drive in stroke patients who had muscleweakness.(1) In this study we measured the musclestrength of the ankle plantar flexors in chronic strokepatients before and after a single session of chiropracticcare or a control intervention (sham adjustment). Wealso used electrical stimulations of the tibial nerve to elicitV waves, which can be used to show how well the braincan drive muscles, and to test the H reflex, which tells usabout excitability within the spinal cord.

  • to help people with neck pain, back pain andsome types of headaches, even though in practicewe see so much more. We need to build moreevidence about other benefits of care so we canlet the world know what a huge impactchiropractic care can have on brain/bodycommunication and human performance. Wewant to see a world of people expressing theiroptimal potential, and if we can’t tell them what’spossible with chiropractic care, because we don’thave the research to support what we’re saying, that won’t happen. That is why we are sopassionate about the research we do! As I already mentioned we just couldn’t do thiswork without you. Thank you so much! Yoursupport is making a big difference. Together, through research, we can advance thechiropractic profession by better understandingthe effects of chiropractic care on nervous systemfunction, health, wellness, and humanperformance. We look forward to continuing toserve our profession and the public at large byconducting ground-breaking research studies thatare really making a difference!!! So, getting this study published was a great achievement, but where to from here? There is obviously a lot moreresearch that needs to be done, and we are onto it! Ourteam is currently conducting a pilot clinical trial that isinvestigating the impact of four weeks of chiropractic careon functional and neurophysiological outcomes in strokepatients. We can’t wait to see what comes out of this nextexciting study. You may also be interested to know that we’ve taken thenext step in our line of research that is investigating theeffects of chiropractic care on children. This is obviouslyreally important considering what is going on in Australiawith their inquiry that is assessing whether chiropractorsshould continue to be able to provide care to children. Ournext exciting kids study is underway and is looking at theeffects of four weeks of chiropractic care on behaviourand function in kids with ADHD. Talking about our‘chiropractic for kids’ research programme, I’m also sovery, very proud of Dr Aisha Strand and Dr Jenna Duehr, two of our phenomenal up-and-coming researchers whohave recently completed their master’s degrees. Theirmaster’s projects focussed on chiropractic care for kidswith autism and kids with cerebral palsy respectively. These guys are amazingly talented new researchers andwe hope that we can continue to work with them both atthe CCR for years to come as we move forward with our‘chiropractic care for kids’ research programme. Of course, we’re also continuing the basic scienceresearch studies we’re well-known for, but we’re reallyexcited that we’re now also able to undertake largerscale clinical trials to evaluate longer-term patientoutcomes with chiropractic care. This is so important forchiropractors as we need more evidence - and thatmeans more research - to communicate and market whatwe do. In many places in the world, we can only say thatchiropractic may be able
