FUST-OCEAN: 20 Jaar Steun aan UNESCO Science Programmes
International Cooperation Programmes at Universities in Flanders, Panel:• Deepening scientific understanding of natural coastal and marine
ecosystems’ in the context of the FUST cooperation• Broadening the science basis to encompass social and economic sciences• Role of academia to strengthen capacity development in UNESCO IOC
context• Opportunities to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation in
future FUST context (training, data, research planning)
SPINCAM: - establish an integrated coastal area management
(ICAM) indicator framework at national and regional level in the countries of the Southeast Pacific region (Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru)
- focused on the state of the coastal and marine environment and socio-economic conditions, to provide stakeholders with information.
The SPINCAM week in Flanders 16 to 19 February 2016:• Ostend, 16-17 February 2016 : SPINCAM and
OceanTeacher workshop on ocean governance and sustainable ocean based economy
• Ostend, 18 February 2016: Interaction between SPINCAM and Flanders research community
• Brussels, 19 February 2016: SPINCAM high level meeting with the Government of Flanders and European Commission
UN Decade of Ocean Science
for Sustainable
Development
Importance of Research infrastructures as hubs in Decade Roadmap
Crucial platforms for acquiring knowledge, instrumental for connecting research communities(ESFRIs such as LifeWatch, EMBRC, Research vessels, satellites, marine robotics)
UNDOSSD as a catalyst for a true inter-multi-disciplinary approach and collaboration aroundconcrete societal challenges
UN Decade helps to set the focus on ecosystem-based research-> connecting disciplines andavoid competition; Promote thinking ‘beyond’ the impact factors: societal value, ethical andequal rights standards (re-thinking academic impact); Promote Sustainability and ecosystemthinking in research/research programmes
Developing collaboration/partnerships with industry
develop win-win situations ; e.g. (co)funding of monitoring activities relevant for science andthe blue economic sector(s); co-design of research infrastructure and monitoring schemes
UN Decade: Consultationpotential contribution fromFlanders Marine Research Groups
Capacity development!
• Means of increasing equal access to opportunities, equal access to training and resources, useof crucial research techniques (remote sensing); Equal level playing field, sharing expertise, promoting gender equality
• Sustained support and sustainable finance mechanisms with special attention for SIDS andLDC (small island developing states; low development countries); recognition of regionaldiversity and different needs, capacities, priorities
• UN Decade provides the framework for capacity development strategy for the transfer ofmarine technology (IOC Strategy for Capacity Development 2015-2021)
Ocean Literacy
The UN Decade promotes translating research results to policy and informed decision-makinge.g. local authorities. Science Communication makes science communicators
Flanders marine research community can contribute: help making the roadmap more concrete, translate into concrete research actions, at different spatial and governance levels (Flanders, federal, EU, sea basin scale,.)
• IOC Capacity Development Strategy: Ocean Teacher Global Academy (FUST), Summer school exchange programmes, mechanism for transfer of marine technologies;
