Young talent timeA host of Victoria’s most talented male and female footballers at both under-18 and under-16 level have given an insight into the future of our game while representing Vic Country and Vic Metro on the national stage recently. The NAB AFL U18 Championships wrapped up two weeks ago at Etihad Stadium with Vic Metro falling to South Australia in what was eff ectively a grand final, while the AFL Women’s U18 Championships and AFL U16 (boys) Championships were completed on the Gold Coast this past week.
The performances of players at this national level will greatly inform the opinions of AFL and AFL Women’s clubs when they come to make selections at the draft s later this year, and Victoria has had a consistently outstanding strike rate in producing AFL draft ees.
Last year, for example, the TAC Cup produced 43 of the 78 total selections in the NAB AFL Draft (55 per cent), including top-10 picks such as Cameron Rayner (Western Jets), Paddy Dow (Bendigo Pioneers) and Jaidyn Stephenson (Eastern Ranges) who all distinguished themselves in the 2017 AFL U18 Championships.
Will we see the likes of this year’s Vic Metro MVP Bailey Smith (Sandringham Dragons) or Larke Medal winner and U18 All Australian captain Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons) – who stood out in Vic Country’s spirited but ultimately winless campaign – as top draft picks in 2018?
Or will highly-rated TAC Cup Girls (and now Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s) players like Madison Prespakis (Calder Cannons/Melbourne Uni) and Jordyn Allen (Dandenong Stingrays/Casey Demons) emulate the deeds of AFL Women’s rising stars Chloe Molloy (Collingwood) and Monique Conti (Western Bulldogs) next year aft er their turn in the U18 Championships this week?
If Victoria has anything to do about it, the future of our game at the national level is in great shape.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 15With the six teams placed fourth to ninth on the ladder all holding records of 7-5, games in Peter Jackson VFL Round 15 should prove important in the run to finals. Meanwhile, 11th-placed Sandringham’s September hopes might be on the line against Geelong – we talk to the club’s senior coach Aaron Hamill.
SANDRINGHAM vs GEELONG – Sunday 2pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval
V
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 2 @ GMHBA Stadium: Sandringham 9.10 (64) d Geelong 9.8 (62)
FORM COMING INSandringham (11th, 5-6-1) has been unable to win back-to-back games since Rounds 1 and 2, enjoying a big victory over Port Melbourne in Round 13 but only drawing with Coburg last week. Geelong (3rd, 9-3) went two games clear of fourth position aft er notching a sixth straight win in Round 14, by 70 points against Frankston.
KEY QUESTION What can the Zebras learn from Round 2? Sandringham scraped home against the Cats earlier this season thanks to contested-possession and clearance control. David Armitage led the way that day, and even if he isn’t present this time around, the likes of Kade Answerth and Brede Seccull have the ability to impose themselves on contests.
KEY STATThe Zebras might see their finals hopes snuff ed out if they can’t break down Geelong’s defensive web. The Cats have conceded an average of just 44 points per game across their current six-match winning streak and are the VFL’s second-ranked team in terms of fewest total points conceded this year.
COACH’S PERSPECTIVE
Sandringham senior coach Aaron Hamill on the team’s season so far:“We’re developing. I think we’ve improved defensively as the season has progressed, we’ve been really solid and consistent in contests and our ball use is a work in progress. Being number-one in contested possessions and clearances (per game) and number-two in tackles is going to hold us in good stead as the season progresses. That’s certainly our brand of footy – we’re tough and aggressive inside the contest.”
On the players that have impressed him this season:“I think Brede Seccull has been a standout for us. He’s walked straight in to the club and had an impact. I’m not surprised by what he’s produced because of the way he prepares himself; he likes to think about his footy a lot and he’s a worker. I’ve been rapt with his performance on the field but also off the field with how he’s been able to have a significant influence on the group. Kade Answerth, Myke Cook, Jack Noone and Dylan Weickhardt form the
nucleus of our leadership group and they’re certainly setting the standard for our younger players coming through like Hayden McLean, Jonathan Haidon, Beau Bailey, Luke Verma and James Sziller.”
On some of the keys to victory against the Cats on Sunday:“I don’t view this as a crunch game; I view it as a chance to compete and improve. We know Geelong is a really good defensive unit – you just need to look at how their AFL team sets up defensively – and they’re consistent through the stoppages. We’re going to have to bring the contested brand of footy that has won us games this year, but it’ll also be about what the Cats are doing outside stoppages and how they set up defensively. We’re going to have to use the ball against them better than we have been.”
Brede Seccull has made a big impact in his first VFL season with Sandringham

RICHMOND vs NORTH MELBOURNE – Saturday 2.10pm @ Holm Park, Beaconsfield
[LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 6 @ Etihad Stadium: Richmond 21.13 (139) d
North Melbourne 7.9 (51)
FORM COMING INRichmond (1st, 10-2) followed up victories over the
Northern Blues and Box Hill Hawks with a 32-point
defeat of top-four opponent Essendon last week. North
Melbourne (10th, 6-6) suff ered a setback in its quest for
a top-eight spot in Round 14, scoring only seven behinds
in a 37-point loss to the Casey Demons.
KEY QUESTIONHow will the Kangaroos respond to last week’s
performance? When Sandringham produced the first
goalless VFL/VFA performance in almost 100 years
four weeks ago, it responded with a 54-point defeat of
Port Melbourne. Now North Melbourne is in the same
situation – except it hasn’t had the same benefit of a bye
and is facing the ladder leader.
KEY STATThe wind and rain at Casey Fields last week made
finding the ball in space diff icult, but the Kangaroos still
only recorded a remarkably low total of 73 uncontested
possessions (the Demons had 209). Hard-nuts like Nick
Rippon and Nash Holmes may enjoy the contest, but a
better balance is surely required against a Tigers outfit
always up for the fight.
BOX HILL HAWKS vs PORT MELBOURNE – Sunday 2pm @ Box Hill City Oval[LIVE on 3WBC radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Qualifying Final @ Box Hill City Oval: Box Hill Hawks 11.11 (77) d Port Melbourne 9.10 (64)
FORM COMING INThe Hawks (5th, 7-5) had suff ered four losses in their last five games before an important 43-point victory over Footscray in Round 14. Port Melbourne (8th, 7-5) jumped back into the top eight with a 33-point win against Williamstown last week following back-to-back defeats.
KEY QUESTIONIs this a proverbial ‘eight-point game’? The Borough is in the top eight by just nine percentage points while Box Hill is three positions higher by only 13 more percentage points, meaning this clash is crucial for keeping pace in the finals race. Considering these teams have missed September twice combined since 2009, the reputational stakes are high.
KEY STATAft er a down patch of games, the Hawks regained control of the ball against the Bulldogs, smashing their own VFL-leading averages for uncontested possessions (by 15) and marks (23). The Borough ranks in the competition’s top five in both of these categories though, so winning in the contests will be critical to each team’s plans.

V
WERRIBEE vs ESSENDON – Saturday 2.10pm @ Avalon Airport Oval
[LIVE on Channel 7]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 3 @ North Melbourne Recreation Reserve: Werribee 14.13 (97) d Essendon 9.20 (74)
FORM COMING INWerribee (12th, 3-9) has lost back-to-back matches to top-eight opposition, a 58-point loss to Collingwood last week following a defeat at the hands of Geelong. Meanwhile, Essendon (4th, 7-5) has suff ered back-to-back losses to top-four opponents aft er going down to the Casey Demons and then Richmond by 32 points in Round 14.
KEY QUESTIONHow important is this game to the Bombers? The answer is: Very important. Aft er failing consecutive tests against the top two, Essendon is only percentage ahead of ninth position and has dates with fellow top-eight teams Collingwood, Port Melbourne, Geelong and then Footscray aft er this game, meaning a victory here is crucial for keeping pace.
KEY STATThe Bombers struggled with ball in hand in the face of pressure from Richmond last week and won’t get a let up against Werribee, which laid 101 tackles in the wet against the Magpies in Round 14. Pressure machine Dominic Brew recorded almost a fift h of that total with a huge 20 tackles – more than the AFL record for tackles in a game (19).

* ROUND 15 BYE – Collingwood
CASEY DEMONS vs FOOTSCRAY – Sunday 2pm @ Casey Fields[LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 9 @ Casey Fields: Casey Demons 10.15 (75) d Footscray 9.8 (62)
FORM COMING INThe Demons (2nd, 10-2) extended their winning streak to eight last week with a 37-point defeat of North
Melbourne in which they kept the Kangaroos to just seven behinds. Footscray (9th, 7-5) had a four-match winning
streak snapped by a 43-point loss to the Box Hill Hawks in Round 14.
KEY QUESTIONDo the Bulldogs have enough avenues to goal to win? Casey boasts six players to have kicked 11 or more goals
this season – led by Cam Pedersen (20), Harley Balic (16) and Sam Weideman (15) – while Footscray has only two,
in Angus Monfries (16) and Fergus Greene (11). Overall, the Bulldogs average 15 fewer points per game than the
Demons.
KEY STATFootscray has benefited from a three-pronged ruck division of Tom Campbell, Jordan Roughead and Tim English
for much of 2018 and is ranked first in the VFL for hitouts per game and second for clearances. Casey, meanwhile, is
ranked last for hitouts and 11th for clearances and may need to bring its trademark pressure to make up for those
gaps.
V
NORTHERN BLUES vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Sunday 2pm @ IKON Park
[vfl.com.au LIVE VIDEO STREAM / VFL Live]
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 6 @ Williamstown Football Ground:
Williamstown 12.6 (78) d Northern Blues 5.5 (35)
FORM COMING INThe Blues (13th, 2-9) couldn’t quite back up their victory
over Collingwood, losing to Footscray by six points last
time out before a bye. A three-match winning streak for
Williamstown (7th, 7-5) was ended by a 33-point defeat
at the hands of Port Melbourne last week.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Blues disrupt a finals quest or two?
Northern’s upset triumph over Collingwood in Round
12 was characterised by tackling pressure and taking
chances in front of goal. The Blues may rank second-last
in the VFL for disposals per game but the likes of Tom
Wilson and Sam Fisher give their all without the ball and
could surprise a complacent opponent.
KEY STATBoth of these teams have had issues with finding the ball
in space, with Williamstown ranking 13th and the Blues
14th in the competition for uncontested possessions per
game. Last time they met in Round 6 though, the Seagulls
dominated that count by 85 as well as the contested-
possession count by 32 to post a comprehensive victory.
V
COBURG vs FRANKSTON – Sunday 2pm @ Piranha Park
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 6 @ SkyBus Stadium: Frankston 16.13 (109) d Coburg 8.12 (60)
FORM COMING INCoburg (15th, 0-12-1) continues its search for a first win of the season aft er coming heartbreakingly close in a draw with Sandringham last week. Frankston (14th, 2-10) lost its sixth consecutive game – all by margins of 47 points or more – in falling to Geelong by 70 points in Round 14.
KEY QUESTIONLet’s ask again: Is this the week for the Lions? Coburg looked set to break its 2018 duck last week but had to settle for a draw. Last time these teams met, the Lions generated eight more inside-50s but conceded eight more goals, so being able to better seize opportunities in front of goal might get them that long-awaited win this week.
KEY STATLuke Bunker’s return to Coburg’s line-up in Round 10 aft er recovering from a knee injury has given the Lions a boost around stoppages and helped off set the loss of Liam Hunt. In five appearances since, Bunker is averaging a team-high nine tackles per game and is second in clearances behind only fellow young gun Marcus Lentini.

So close for CoburgCoburg came agonisingly close to its first victory of 2018 last week, ultimately drawing with Sandringham in a dramatic finish at Piranha Park. The Lions had charged home from a 32-point deficit
at three-quarter time with six straight goals – four
to Peter McEvoy – to take a six-point lead with 26
minutes on the final-term clock.
However, Zebras player Doulton Langlands won a free
kick with seconds remaining and then received a 50m
penalty when a Coburg trainer ran through the mark
on their way to help an injured player. Langlands’
resulting kick aft er the siren ensured the premiership
points would be split.
Coburg had lost 13 straight games since last winning
against North Ballarat late in 2017 and hasn’t beaten
a current VFL team since knocking off Sandringham
22 games ago.
Ladder logjamSix teams from fourth to ninth on the ladder all hold records of 7-5, promising an intriguing last seven rounds in the run to finals.Sitting at least two games behind the top three of
Richmond, the Casey Demons and Geelong are
(in ladder order) Essendon, the Box Hill Hawks,
Collingwood, Williamstown, Port Melbourne and
Footscray.
Some key games involving this group in coming
weeks include Sunday’s clash between Box
Hill and Port Melbourne, as well as Essendon
vs Collingwood (Round 16), Williamstown
vs Footscray (Round 16), Port Melbourne vs
Essendon (Round 18) and Box Hill vs Collingwood
(Round 18).
Tassie VFL planThe AFL last week announced a provisional licence for a Tasmanian team to play in the Peter Jackson VFL in 2021 under a plan to rebuild the strength of Tasmanian football.A Tasmanian team previously competed in the VFL
from 2001-08 under the ‘Devils’ nickname, making the
finals from 2003-05 and producing a joint J.J. Liston
Trophy winner (Ian Callinan) in 2005.

GEELONG CATS vs SOUTHERN SAINTS –
Saturday 1pm @ Deakin University, Geelong
FORM COMING INThe Cats (4th, 5-2-1) suff ered their second loss in a row when they travelled to Darwin to face the NT Thunder last week, ultimately defeated by 65 points. The Saints (6th, 4-3) lost their third match this season in Round 9, the Casey Demons downing them by 11 points at Casey Fields.
KEY QUESTIONWhere has Geelong gone wrong in the last two weeks? The Cats dominated opponents early in the season but have suff ered a misstep or two over the past two weeks. In Round 8, they failed to apply as much pressure as the Western Bulldogs, whose strong kicking and marking out-matched Geelong’s running game. In Round 9, the Cats had a tough assignment against NT, but the Thunder were better by foot and proved more accurate against a Geelong outfit that recorded more disposals but for a much smaller return. The Cats have been missing ball-winner Renee Garing for the last three weeks but welcomed the return of Richelle Cranston last week, who was a crucial out from the clash with the Bulldogs and proved she was a vital part of the line-up with 20 disposals and one of her team’s two goals against NT.
KEY STATLauren Arnell was one of the standouts in a lacklustre Southern Saints outfit last round, with the Brisbane AFLW recruit finishing with a hard-fought 24 disposals and 11 tackles in the loss to Casey.
V
DAREBIN FALCONS vs NT THUNDER – Saturday 12pm @ Preston City Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 1 @ Preston City Oval: NT Thunder 12.14 (86) d Darebin Falcons 5.2 (32)
FORM COMING INDarebin (5th, 5-3) failed to topple an undefeated Collingwood side in Round 9, losing by 30 points at Victoria Park. Aft er suff ering their first two losses of the season, the Thunder (3rd, 6-2) got back on track last week with a 65-point win over Geelong in Darwin.
KEY QUESTIONHow can the Falcons match NT’s attack? The major weakness in Darebin’s game the last time it faced the Thunder was an inability to attack inside 50. NT had 52 inside-50s to 16, and while the Falcons did well to finish with seven scoring shots from those limited chances, they couldn’t compete with the Thunder’s relentless attack. Darebin didn’t name ruck Lauren Pearce and midfielders Nat Exon and Elise O’Dea last time around, and having all three playing together will be a good starting point for winning this time.
KEY STATNT’s Jessica Sedunary was on fire against the Cats last week, finishing with four goals from 17 disposals. The Thunder forward has played five games this season and her latest goal haul added to previous bags of three against both Melbourne Uni (Round 4) and Carlton (Round 6).

WESTERN BULLDOGS vs ESSENDON – Sunday 1pm
@ Henry Turner Memorial ReserveFORM COMING INThe Bulldogs (7th, 4-4) continued their winning ways in Round 9 with a fourth victory in as many weeks, beating Melbourne Uni by 21 points. Essendon (13th, 1-7) celebrated a historic first VFLW win last week, knocking off Richmond by eight points.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Bombers gain any momentum in a tough fixture? Essendon finally sung the team song in Round 9 but the road forward looks tough. The Bombers will play the in-form Bulldogs this round and then three of the competition’s top-five sides in the Darebin Falcons, Collingwood and then the Geelong Cats – with three of these four games on the road.
KEY STATHaving being crowned the AFLW leading goalkicker in 2018, Brooke Lochland was back at her best in the Bulldogs’ VFLW side last week, booting three goals against her old VFLW teammates at the Mugars – this haul coming aft er kicking only two majors from her previous five games.
CARLTON vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Sunday 11.30am @ IKON Park
[vfl.com.au LIVE VIDEO STREAM]
FORM COMING IN Carlton (10th, 2-6) lost a sixth straight game – narrowly going down to Melbourne Uni by six points in Round 8 – before sitting out last week with a bye. Williamstown (12th, 1-7) was in prime position to upset second-placed Hawthorn in Round 9 but fell at the last hurdle to lose by four points.
KEY QUESTIONWhich team can overcome their fadeouts? The Seagulls started their Round 9 clash against the Hawks with a bang – kicking four straight goals to lead by 16 points at quarter time – but failed to maintain that intensity across the remaining three terms and lost the match. In comparison, Carlton booted 5.2 in the opening stanza against the Mugars in Round 8 to lead by 20 points at the first change, but the Blues were only able to add a single major to their goal tally in the third quarter and ultimately lost narrowly.
KEY STATCarlton AFLW defender Nat Plane has been having a consistent season for the club’s VFLW side, averaging 13 disposals and six tackles from her five games. The 21-year-old had one of her best showings against Melbourne Uni in Round 8, finishing with 24 disposals and six tackles.

RICHMOND vs CASEY DEMONS – Sunday 2.30pm
@ Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo
FORM COMING INRichmond (8th, 3-5) experienced its
second loss in as many weeks in Round
9, losing to Essendon by eight points.
Casey (9th, 3-4) avenged its Round
3 loss to the Southern Saints with an
11-point victory over the same side last
week.
KEY QUESTIONWill the Tigers have a ‘home ground’
advantage? Aft er close losses to
Hawthorn and the Bombers over the
last two rounds, Richmond will be
looking to rebound in a familiar setting.
The Tigers were big winners in their only
other game at Queen Elizabeth Oval,
beating Melbourne Uni by 29 points in
Round 6. They will now have much-
needed experience with the change
to their pre-match travel and routine,
though the Demons have proven
themselves competent away from home
with two of their three wins coming
away from Casey Fields.
KEY STATIt was Casey’s ability to mark in wet
conditions that set them apart from the
Saints last week. With clean skills an
important trait in wet-weather footy, the
Demons won the mark tally 27-14. Over
half of that number came from three
key players: Bianca Jakobsson (seven
marks), Taryn Orgill (four) and Lorianne
Lowerson (three).

@ Melbourne University Main Oval[LIVE on WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]
FORM COMING INMelbourne Uni (11th, 2-6) failed to get any traction from their Round 8 win against Carlton, going down by 21 points to the Western Bulldogs last week. Hawthorn (2nd, 7-1) is on a roll with four wins in a row and followed up a triumph over Richmond with a come-from-behind victory against Williamstown in Round 9.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Mugars lead from the outset? Melbourne Uni has failed to start well over the past two rounds. The Mugars trailed the Bulldogs by 26 points at the first break last week – failing to kick a score themselves – before producing a better fourth quarter (four goals), but couldn’t reel back the lead. Against Carlton the previous week, they conceded 5.2 to the Blues in the opening term before turning things around to win in the end. Melbourne Uni will need to get into a winning position early this week, as the Hawks have proven they have the ability to fight back from deficits themselves.
KEY STATHawthorn midfielder Rebecca Beeson proved the match-winner against the Seagulls last round. With the Hawks heading into the final quarter trailing by nine points, Beeson kicked a goal in the 12th minute to reduce the margin to two points and then sealed the match with her second major in the 18th minute of the term.

Kicking Goals In Two FieldsCasey Demons’ pocket-rocket forward Aliesha Newman has a lot to be excited about.
With two AFLW seasons under her belt, she’s now looking to add her dream career to the mix.
“I’ve always wanted to join Victoria Police,” Newman said.
“I never had anyone in my family who was a police off icer, so there’s an incentive to be the first. It was just something I always wanted to do from when I was a kid.”
The sporting all-rounder admits knuckling down on study was a shock to the system, but she was determined.
“It’s been years since I really sat down and studied so it will take a bit of time to adjust,” she said.
“I actually applied before in 2016 and I failed three components of the exam. I was going to re-sit but got a double concussion and missed the timeframe so had to wait 12 months to apply again.
“I feel more confident going in this time knowing a bit more what to expect.”
Newman appeared on the Marngrook Footy Show earlier this year to run through the Victoria Police fitness test as part of the organisation’s commitment to recruit more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members.
“So I know I’ve got one thing sorted – the fitness test,” Newman said with a laugh.
“I always wanted to be at the Victoria Police Academy and it was really humbling to be asked, I loved every minute of it and I’m looking to help other women, especially indigenous women, to join.”
That confidence is also translating to her game.
Despite Casey’s lack-lustre start to the season, the VFLW competition is giving Newman a good grounding in the sport she only took up aft er hearing of the AFLW draft .
“I saw something about AFLW on Facebook and went down to a come and try day,” the former state-level athlete and soccer player said.
“My best friend and I nominated for the draft and didn’t get picked but I got a call two weeks aft er asking me to come down for a session and I got the last spot with Melbourne.
“I was working as a postie at the time and I literally fell of my bike getting that call, I asked so many times ‘who am I talking to again?’.
“I only played 4 games in 2017 but was able to play all games this year so I felt really confident coming into the VFL this year and I’m trying lots of diff erent positions, I’m trying to be versatile and it’s good to get the knowledge from across the ground.”
Newman said she saw a lot of parallels between her sporting and working lives, including the leadership, team work and communication both foster and rely on.
“I’d like to maybe get into the detective side of policing, I find that stuff really interesting but I’d just be excited to get in,” she said.
“And I can’t wait for 2019 with the Dees – it sucks we have to wait so long between seasons! We’re building something really special and with the two new AFLW teams you just don’t know what to expect.”
With a great starting salary, generous leave and the opportunity to help your community, you’re more suited than you might think for a career with Victoria Police. Visit policecareer.vic.gov.au for more information and to apply.

Had ‘the talk’
