Vesalian Anatomy and the changing perceptions of our physical body in 21st century Medical Art

One has to delve into the reasons why contemporary artists are turning their attention once again to the subject of anatomy.

But why was Anatomy abandoned from Art in the first place?

Why are artists renewing their quest towards understanding the physical human body?

And how can the body be perceived today, with modern techniques and taking into account our knowledge of limitations of our senses ?

So many mind-blowing discoveries about the human body took place in the five centuries after Vesalius’ work, because he inspired scientists to learn from the bench and the bedside. The macro world evolves into a micro- and nanoworld.

Today a patient is still of flesh and blood, but the blood has become an abstracted body. Blood results can be printed on paper. We discuss with the patient his body function on the computer screen. He not only has a hemoglobin level of 12 gram/deciliter; he ‘is’ that hemoglobin molecule when he leaves the hospital room.
