Over Jacques Slegers (1936 - 2000)

Jacques SlegersIn 1955 begon voor Jacques Slegers zijn wonderlijke levensloop vol successen, toen hij als student werd ingeschreven aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kun-sten te Tilburg, vrije studierichting. De opleiding duurde 4 jaar, maar het bijzondere talent van de jeugdige Jacques werd al snel onderkend en in 1956 kon hij zijn opleiding afsluiten, want, zei docent Nico Molenkamp, “ik kan hem niets meer leren”.

Later ging hij naar het Nationaal Hoger Instituut te Antwerpen en kreeg hij een beurs van de Franse re-gering en studeerde in Parijs. Daarna vertrok hij twee zomers achtereen naar Salzburg om bij Oskar Koko-schka te studeren. Van de eerste zomercursus kwam hij terug met een werk waarop de Oostenrijkse groot-meester had aangetekend: “Excellent, you paint like a tiger!”

PrijzenOp 21-jarige leeftijd sleepte hij de Culturele Prijs van de Stad Eindhoven in de wacht, een jaar later in Salz-burg de Oskar Kokoschkaprijs, waarna, bij hoge uitzon-dering, directeur Edy de Wilde het Van Abbemuseum openstelde voor een solo-tentoonstelling.

Werken, werken, werken…Wat doe je als je zo jong al zoveel lof krijgt toegezwaaid, het “enfant chéri” in de schilderkunst bent? Werken, werken en nog eens werken, luidde het antwoord dat Jacques Slegers aan zichzelf gaf. Hij ontwikkelde zich explosief als gedreven schilder en tekenaar, zeldzaam veelzijdig, uitbundig en onstuimig. Expressionistisch gebruik van kleur, van directe penseelkracht en schrif-tuur gingen samen met composities die zowel abstract als figuratief leesbaar waren. Hij werd getypeerd als een koppige eenling, een bezeten en veelzijdig kunstenaar.

In het woonhuis van het gezin Slegers opende hij en zijn jonge vrouw in 1965 Galerie Slegers en richtten daar exposities in van Nederlandse beeldende kunstenaars. Daarnaast reisden zij samen door het hele land, en naar het buitenland, om het werk van Jacques met intense regelmaat op tientallen exposities te tonen. Veel werk werd opgenomen in collecties van verzamelaars. En de prijzenregen hield niet op: hij ontving de Koninklijke Sub-sidie voor schilderkunst, in 1962 en wederom in 1965.

Gevoelig en intelligent intuïtief kunstenaarIn zijn schilderijen drukte Jacques Slegers zijn verlan-gen naar zuiverheid en gelukzaligheid uit, en zijn so-ciaal engagement. Voor hem was schilderen dan ook dé manier om te communiceren met zijn publiek. “Met mijn

schilderijen vallen alle façades van mij af, dan geef ik mij totaal bloot”, zei hij in een interview. Zijn vrije werk is vol drift, vol felle expressie, het is een picturaal visioen van grote intensiteit en van een gevoelige intelligente intuïtie. Hij werd vaak geprezen om zijn techniek, maar techniek op zich zei hem niet zoveel. Dat de techniek hem in staat stelde over te brengen wat hij wilde, daar ging het hem om. Het aanvankelijk vooral figuratief getinte werk van Jacques Slegers was vanaf de jaren tachtig sterk abstract-expressionistisch geworden. Figuratief, non-figuratief, het zijn termen die de kunstenaar zelf als achterhaald bes-chouwde.

“Ik geloof dat ik een groot schilder ben, ja”.Hijzelf schilderde voort, zijn leven en zijn treurnis. Hij koos voortdurend voor het ‘onbegonnen’ werk, een voorwaarde om nooit tot middelmatigheid te vervallen: “Een schilder is moederziel alleen als hij schildert. Hij is -wat nog erger is- alleen in het meervoud, met zichzelf en al zijn onbekende ikken bij elkaar. De schilder is een denker, die zichzelf van het schilderen tracht af te houden, maar tenslotte altijd weer wordt gered als hij inziet dat hij alleen nog verder kan denken als hij zijn denken schildert. Hij reist door de nacht, eindeloos, de ochtend moet hij zelf uitvinden”. “Ik geloof dat ik een groot schilder ben, ja”.

Jacques Slegers koos dagelijks voor het kunste-naarschap en vond ook dagelijks zijn oorspronkelijke motieven voor die keuze terug. Hij was kunstenaar omdat hij niet de kunst verstond om aan het leven te wennen. ‘He painted like a human being’ dat een wapen had uitgevonden tegen de onmenselijkheid van het leven. ‘De tijger’ schilderde vanuit zijn me-delijden de tegenstellingen waaraan het leven zo rijk is, deed geen vlieg kwaad, was razend van onmacht en in al zijn kwetsbaarheid razend knap.

Op maandag 31 januari 2000 overleed hij op 63-jarige leeftijd te Tilburg aan de gevolgen van een hersenbloeding.

Jacques SlegersOn the 20th of February 1936 Jacobus Franciscus Wilhelmus Slegers -usual name Jacques- was born in the centre of Eindhoven. His delighted parents, hard-working retailers, carrying on ‘Het Simplexhuis’ (mo-ped-shop) and a bicycle workshop, could not suspect that this black-haired little fellow in the cradle would become a ‘painting tiger’.From his earliest years on, Jacques was drawing and painting. When, as a matter of course, time was ripe for Jacques to join his parents’ firm, he firmly resisted: in stead of repairing bicycles Jacques wanted to study at the academy of arts. He was allowed to do so, on the condition that he first would finish his commercial evening class. Just in case......

AwardsIn the meantime, at the age of 21, Jacques pinched the Culture Award of the City of Eindhoven. One year later he won the Oskar Kokoschka Award in Salzburg after which -by way of rare exception- Edy de Wilde, manager of the Van Abbemuseum, invited Jacques for a solo exhibition.

Work, work, work…What to do when you -being the ‘enfant chéri’ of the art of painting at such a young age already- are so highly praised? Work, work and once more work, was the answer Jacques Slegers gave himself. He explosively de-veloped into a painter and a draughtsman, exceptionally versatile, exuberant and boisterous. Expressionist use of colour and direct brush-power went together with com-positions that, often in a dramatical, rebellious manner, were readable both in an abstract and figurative way. Paintings, gouaches and drawings were created with enthusiasm and at full speed and showed a vivid fan-tasy. Jacques Slegers was typified as a stubborn loner, a possessed and versatile artist. Works were bought by art-collectors.And the flood of awards unwearingly con-tinued: in 1962 and again in 1965 Jacques received the Royal Subsidy for the art of painting.

Sensitive and intelligent intuitive artistIn his paintings, Jacques Slegers expressed his desire for purity and bliss as well as his social involvement. To him, painting was the utmost way to communicate with his public.’While I am painting all my facades disappear, I completely commit myself.’, he stated in an interview with Eindhovens Dagblad. Jacques’s free work is full of passion, full of vivid expression, it is a pictorial vision of great intensity and of a sensitive intelligent intuition. He was often praised for his technical skills but Jacques re-garded technique in itself as a side-issue. Main point was

that technique enabled him to communicate his message.Ever since the eighties, Jacques’s initially mainly figura-tive work had become strongly abstract and expressionist. However, in the artist’s opinion ‘figurative’ or ‘non-figura-tive’ were nothing but outdated terms.

“I am a great painter, yes.’In contradiction to former days, Jacques did not exhibit frequently the last years. Rather than being profitable, his initial reputation seemed to be to his disadvantage.He continued painting, his life and his sadness. Continu-ally choosing ‘hopeless’ tasks, a condition to prevent being reduced to mediocrity. ‘A painter is quite alone while painting. Even worse, his loneliness is multi-faceted: he is on his own, accompanied by all his unknown selves. The painter is a thinker who tries to keep himself from painting but who -in the end- again and again is saved when he acknowledges the only way to go on thinking is by paint-ing his thoughts. He endlessly travels through the night; he has to invent dawn all by himself.’Jacques Slegers would have loved to fling himself once again into organizing an extensive exhibition at the Van Abbemuseum but he met up with refusal because, with the lapse of time, the staff’s special interest had developed in a divergent direction. And indeed, this hurt him, but the former child prodigy was not to be put off: ‘I believe I am a great painter, yes.’

Every day again Jacques Slegers chose to be an artist and actually went on re-finding his original motives for that choice. He was an artist because he did not know how to get used to life. He painted like a human being that had invented a weapon against life’s inhumanity. Because of his compas-sion ‘the tiger’ painted life’s numerous contrasts, he would not hurt a fly, was driven to frenzy by his powerlessness and, next to his vulnerability, ex-tremely clever.

On Monday the 31st of January 2000, at the age of 63, he died of a cerebral haemorrhage
