     EDITORIAL...✍

Please fulfill Promise of Temple Reform as a Service to Almighty!

On May 17th 2016 when almost all Exit polls predicted loss in the assembly elections

a message was sent through a staunch devout supporter of Temples Protection Movement

and a family friend of Hon’ble Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithareading as follows. “ It is

interesting to read the June 2011 editorial titled ‘Surprising but True’ on the victory

in last election. Since there is still hope of Divine miracle (Almighty’s decisive vote

can be cast till the last moment ) it is worth while for powers to be to ponder on

the fact that the unfulfilled promise of Temple Reform is a sure way to please Him.

As a reference also including VAK May 2016 issue where we have covered BJP Manifesto

which can be a template for the reform process. Hope you can get this message across. We

pray that the person who believes in GOD wins the TN elections.”

Hon’ble Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalitha as widely reported in the media has thankedthe Almighty for her surprising victory in the 2016 elections against almost all Exit Poll

predictions. It may be a result of her efforts and personal commitment towards devotion

    in Tamil Nadu Temples.

In this context the following is the excerpt from VAK June 2011 Editorial titled ‘Surprising

    But True’

The results of Tamil Nadu Elections have surprised the most experienced pollsters.

They could not predict the scale of the mandate and the subsequent analysis in the

Press of the result has also missed the impact of this important election issue i.e.,

“Temple”. It is our firm belief that the commitment given to eminent devotees bythe top leadership of AIADMK that they would reform the Temple System through

amendments to the Endowments Act and setup a DharmikaParishad created this

silent wave through the grace of the Almighty. There is a clear pattern; where this

issue has silently, played a major part in the results of AP Elections in 2004, Karnataka

Elections in 2008 and now the Tamil Nadu Elections in 2011. The commitment for

Temple reform is a sure way to win the grace of the Almighty and He being the inner

controller of every voter can create a silent wave, recognition of which is beyond

the scope of material tools available to the pollsters and analysts….We now request

the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu SmtJ.Jayalalitha on behalf of crores of

devotees of Tamil Nadu and rest of the world to take up reformation of the TempleSystem as the topmost priority of her administration. We request the Hon’ble Chief

Minister to work towards amendments to the Tamil Nadu Endowments Act on the

lines of similar amendments in AP and Karnataka so that very soon we can have a

DharmikaParishad with eminent people overseeing the administration of Temples

    in Tamil Nadu.

On behalf of Crores of devotees VAK appeals to the Hon’ble Chief Minister Selvi

    J. Jayalalitha to fulfill the promise of Temple Reform in this term as a service to the Almighty.

SPARKLING SHOOT OF SHAFTSSri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama - 183

It is the Seventeenth of May 2016.I am busy in search of the appealing way of presentingthe anecdote for the 183 rd  name of SriVishnusahasranama, with the tension of receivingthe telephone from the office of VAK reminding onthe same. For VAK has given me the seventeenthof each month as the deadline for sending the anecdotefor the successive month.I was toying with various ideas of presentation. .Iwas still not satisfied .It was elusive.I felt a small diversion might help. I took the Hindufor the day and as is my want I turned to the pageon Sports. Amitabha Das Sharma had reported onthe IPL 2016 Match between Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) and Royal challengers Bangalore (RCB) onthe previous night at Kolkata.Sharma had started his column with the sentence“Eden Gardens switched its loyalty to the brillianceof Virat Kohili as the Royal Challengers BangaloreCaptain anchored the visiting team to an emphaticnine- wicket victory over host Kolkata Knight Riders.”The message I got from this was that brilliance ofone person is easily proved when those in the oppositecamp switch their loyalty to him.

The Lord alone had absolute brilliance in all the fields. These Virats have a trace of the same by His Gracein their fields making them to cause shift in loyaltyof the onlookers.Even in the field of sports there are ample incidentsto prove how enchanting his acts have been. In His incarnation as Rama, an ideal human being,He showed how enchanting His Archery could be.He was there before the roaring ocean on the Southerntip of Bharath. Sugreeva, His friend, the king of Monkeyswith an ocean of monkeys was by His side.Vibheeshana, younger brother of Ravana and his four

companions was also there after having taken asylumat the feet of Rama. The army had to cross the ocean at that point witha width of one hundred “yojanas”  if it were to reachthe northern gate of the fort of Lanka to seize thefort and liberate His queen Seeta.Various alternatives to take the army to the othershore of the ocean were discussedThe suggestion from Vibheeshana that Rama mighttake asylum at the feet of Samudra Maha Raja asking

him to show a way to cross the Ocean was appealingto the Lord.Rama spread “darbah” grass and laid on it facingthe ocean seeking its grace and was on fast.Three days passed. There was no indication of anyresponse from the King of waters-Samudra Maha Raja.It was the fourth day.Rama, tired and feeling hungry decided that enoughwas enough. He felt insulted. Evidently Samudra Maha Raja hadtaken Him for an incompetent dud.He said “Let me teach him a lesson”

“Lakshmana!” He called His younger brother.” Fetchme the bow and arrows as cruel as the venomousserpents. I will shoot those shafts that would producethe fire during the time of dissolution of the universeand evaporate the ocean so that the monkeys wouldcross the ocean by foot on the bed of the ocean.”Lakshmana brought the bow and arrows as instructed.Rama took the bow andtightened the string. Then He placed the arrows Onthe string pulled it to such distance as if it were touchingHis ears.Next second! .

Trembling with Fear there stood a group of Goddessestouching by their hands the auspicious thread tiedaround their neck indicating they were married andtheir husband who tied the thread was still alive. Behindthem stood a bald- headed deity.Rama had to stop release of the arrow as they allfelt at His feet. The lady leading the deities still herhand touching the knot of the thread on her necksaid:“Oh! Child! I am the goddess of River Ganges and Iam your great grand aunt as my foster father is thegreat emperor Bhageerata, your ancestor. He broughtme from the heavens by his penance. He let me flowin the pits dug by his sixty thousand grand fathers-the sons of Emperor Sagara who had completed onehundred “Horse – Sacrifices”. Thus was the creationof this ocean. These deities are various rivers like Godavaree, Krishna,Kaveri, who also fall in the ocean. We are all thereforerightly called the wives of the Ocean and the personbehind us is the deity in charge of the ocean. If theocean is dried by your arrows then he won’t be there. We all will become widows. Please therefore forgivehis lazy response for the sake of me”

At this, the bald deity came to the front seeking asylum.“Please do not shoot the arrows on me. I will tellyou a method by which the stones placed on mewill float and you can easily build a bridge enablingyour army to cross the ocean to invade Lanka”

“Thank you. But then “said Rama “You are a bit late.Having placed the arrow on the string, as a righteousarcher and sincere student of toxophily, I do not withdrawthem without providing them the prey”“You want only a target for them.”“Yes”“There is a beautiful Island called Drumakulya in thenorthern portion in the centre of this ocean. It is asfamous and enticing as you are. But there are a fewcruel ugly sea robbers who pollute the place. Youmay kindly shoot the arrows at the island to finishthem and purify the area.”Rama shot the arrows at Drumakulya, annihilatedthe robbers removed the pollution. He then blessedthe area to be an attractive tourist spot.”As He was shooting the arrow, the grace of shootingwas so enticing that all those on the side of SamudraRaja who were in the camp opposite to Rama tillthen switched their loyalty like the spectators in theEden Gardens shifting their loyalty as reported bythe correspondent of the Hindu. This is just one instance of the glowing shoot of arrowsby the Lord in His incarnation as Rama. There aremany more like His war with Moola Bala, Ravanaetc..

In His incarnation as Krishna such a sparkling shootwas exhibited in burning the Khandava forest, warwith Baanasura etc.Because of these sparkling shoots of arrows the Lord,an envy of toxophilites like Arjuna of Mahabharata,

is called Maheshwasa -  the one with enticing shootof arrows.Veda Vyasa could not avoid recalling the incidentof His conquering the Ocean for the sake of Seetaas Rama as Maheshwasa  (name 183) after describingHim as Mahadridrith , (name 182),the Tortoise thatbore the mountain Mandara during churning of theocean another adventure for the sake of getting HisConsort Goddess Mahalakshmee.

Nirukti  simplifies this enticing explanation to thisname Maheshwasa  by Sri Parasara Bhattar by givingthe literal meaning in a prosaic pattern that He iscalled Maheshwasa because He is the one adornedby the mighty bow called Kodanda when it says

      Madhura Vijayam - 56

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part – II

Story so far: The story based on the 14 th  century

incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved by four Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim invaders. After several adventures the two boys, with the help of Chenchu tribes found the idol along with one Kodava who protected the idol for more than eighteen years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri.Lord Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that place patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas.Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the Vijayanagara’s mulvoy province reaches Tirumala in search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which enabled Vallabha break his fast unto death. Vallabha and Datta turned to Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety of Manjari with her neighbors after the death of Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an

impending attack by Vijayanagar army. The disguised Vaishnava leader was no other than Camphor merchant who revealed that he was the head of Intelligence army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the Vijayanagar men managed to kill all their pursuers and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which Sambuvaraya’s fort exists where at the behest of Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescue Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace and ensure here safety.Meanwhile, as a first step the Vijayanagar army mission

was undertaken to conquer Sambuvaraya of Rajagambhira. Kancheepuram was conquered and Kampana Raya’s army advanced to Rajagambhira mountain. conquered it and killed the Raja Gambhira king. The Madurai princes was rescued. Later,Vallabha and Datta are entrusted with the task of escorting Princess Madhurangini to Pandya kingdom.During this long journey, Vallabha expects a heart- to-heart chat with the princess to express his love....Since the princess addressed him as “brave man!””Veera” and expressed her desire as partly desire

and partly an order, Vallabha was disturbed. ‘Has

the Princess distanced herself from him?’ was hisquestion for which he had no answer so far. In thenight he had a painful state of mind. ‘What is therebetween me and the Princess? Why should I botherabout her?, why should I worry about what shesaid to me or not?’. ‘May be it was my mistake.I have created an expectation for my self. I washaving a feeling about her affection towards mewhich I never confirmed with her. Without knowingher position, building up my own palace of desiresis not a good thing for me. And, now, when I amexperiencing a situation which is opposite to myexpectation, I am sad. Why this situation for me?Why have I brought myself into this position?’ Hetried to console himself in many ways. He felt thatlike other men and like the description of manypoets in many famous works, feelings of love occursto all and hence has occurred to him also. Likeother men facing hurdles to realize their love, heis also facing. All this feelings are happening tohim like those happening to the other heros of poeticworks and like them he has to keep it totallypersonal within his heart, within his mind and withinhis soul. He cannot let his feelings out as it maylook awkward. He will have to silently cry within

his soul like the other heros.‘Tears are the best friends for love’. He read thissome where and he is feeling the same way now. Therefore, he came to a conclusion that whetherthe princess thinks of him or not, loves him or not,he will think of her and build a passion and lovefor her. He will cry for the love in the heart of heartsand he is experiencing a type of joy in crying forhis love and shedding tears for her. Yes, this cravingfor love is creating sorrowfulness in him, makinghim shed tears, but it is an enjoyable sorrowfulnessin which he would like to continue to dwell for ever.

Next day’s journey was also without any event.Third day, Vallabha was suffering from high fever. The party soon chose a good place and hit thecamp tents there for stay in the evening and night. In the night Vallabha lamented and blabbered infever. He was getting the vision of his brother Chinna-Kulasekharan at times and at times he was gettinghis mother Vasanthika in his vision. “Vallabha! Didyou do all I had asked you to do? You have notreturned yet! Have you strayed in your way?” askedhis mother in his dream.

“No mother! No!” blabbared Vallabha in high fever. He woke up, opened his eyes. He did not seeDatta. He may have gone for security work. “Water!”asked Vallabha as he was feeling thirsty. He couldfeel the heat of his high fever. A divine damsel

was standing in front of him. He was surprised. He had not seen a divine damsel before. Feet ofdivine damsels are levitated. In fever the figurestanding in front of him appeared diffused andlevitated.“Who is this? Is this a divine damsel?” enquiredVallabhaVallabha was looking at the damsel examininglyand sharply. He cleared his eyes and saw again. His eyes became clear and broad. ‘who is standingthere?’. ‘ Have my love hallucinations not yetstopped?’ ‘How can this be true?’ ‘How can PrincessMadhurangini come into this tent of mine? ’ ‘if thefigure standing in front of me does not belong toMadhurangini then who is this standing in frontof me?’That girl quickly went out, came with a pot of waterand handed over a glass of water from it to Vallabha.Vallabha was surprised to see. ‘who is this?’, ‘itlooked very familiar’ ‘ the smile is also familiar’.‘who is this?’ thought Vallabha for a moment inhis mind.“Please drink the water. Don’t you recognize me?”said the sweet voiced lady.‘Is she the princess?’. ‘How can this be?’’ How

can she come into my tent? ’“Are you the Princess?” “Am I not hallucinatinghere?” asked Vallabha.“If the water you have drank just now is true thenI am also true” replied the princess.“No Princess! I am hanging between dream andreality. Not only you, but even your speech alsois as if in dream for me” responded vallabha.Soon, Vallabha again closed his eyes. His eyelidswere hot and it closed the eyes. His whole bodywas burning with high temperature and fever. Hewas getting mixed voices of the Princess, Chinna-

Kulasekharan and his mother Vasanthika. He gotdrowned in a huge depth of confusion and becameunconscious. After a long time, he slowly openedhis eyes. The same figure was sitting beside himwith concern in her eyes.“Oh! Princess! Are you in front of me?” “Is thatyou princess?” enquired Vallabha. “Yes! It is meonly!” responded the princess.“I am unable to believe” said Vallabha.“Why?” enquired the princess.“You are like the queen. How can you come here?

Your private attendant Anthahpura kariyam will notaccept” replied Vallabha“If I have some personal desires, can anyone stopme?” responded the Princess.“I am more than grateful Princess!” said Vallabha.

Vallabha’s fever reduced in two days and he becamefit to travel again. After this the caravan again startedits journey. Because, it would be tough for Vallabhato travel on horse, he was given a palanquin. Vallabhaslept in the Palanquin for half of the time and forother half he was awake. On the forth day everyonereached the town of Mulvoy. When they reachedthere, they took Vallabha to the hospital next tothe temple. The head physician started treating himin the morning. It took over a week for Vallabha tobe completely alright. After Vallabha became completely alright and startedto move around like before, he called Datta andsaid “Datta! I want to know about an item if it istrue or false. I am unable to judge. Will you helpme?”“Ask Vallabha!” said Datta.“Enroute, when we camped for my fever to reduce,I felt like the Princess came to my tent and talkedto me. Is this true or my hallucination?”  askedVallabha.“You look crazy! You think the Princess, who hasthe status of the Queen would come to visit youin your tent? She is not an ordinary lady. You mustbe dreaming. Just because she had talked to us

while in trouble does not mean she will come andtalk to us like equals”. Responded Datta.Vallabha was startled.“Datta! All what you said is right. Have you not seenher enter my tent at all?”  enquired Vallabhaunbelievingly.“No” replied Datta.“Has anyone else seen?” re-enquired Vallabha“When it has not happened how could some onehave seen it” responded DattaVallabha became perplexed and speechless. He was very happy to think about the sweet memories

that happened with him, with the princess enteringhis tent, giving him water and watching him recover. And now, lo! He felt all that fortress of sweet memorieshad to be demolished as imagination which he wasnot prepared for. He felt helpless.May be what Datta said is true. If someoneexcessively loves some one and had sweet feelingsin loneliness, he will have to face all these feelingsof real items becoming hallucinations andhallucinations becoming real. It is a must for everyonein the state of Vallabha to go through this.

Vallabha said to himself ‘there is no use in thinkingabout all these items. Let me concentrate onwork at hand’. At the time when he thought thathe should focus on work in his hand he heardthe voice “Hai, ha ha hai hai hai! ” . a beautiful

palanquin carried by many people approachedthe entrance of the hospital.Vallabha expected the beautiful princess to alightfrom the Palanquin. But to his chagrin, a palaceservant approached him from the side and said“Sir, the Palace Karyam (palace service head)has sent th is palanquin for you to v is i tSathyamangalam.Vallabha became pale and deceived. For loversone can see how even small deceptions becomebig set backs. Vallabha did not show his feelingson his face.“Why do I need this palanquin?” asked Vallabha“No Sir! You are recuperating and hence shouldnot take undue trouble. Therefore they have madethis arrangement”. What did he mean by theyhave made arrangements? Could he have not saidstraight that Princess had made the arrangements?Any how, Vallabha felt it was not proper to askwho had made the arrangements for him. Heaccepted and said:“Ok! Good. Thank you!” and sent away the palaceservant. Later, he went inside the hospital halland sat for some time.“mm! lets start. Time is running out”  said Datta

which started to energise the otherwise passiveVallabha. Both of them started. When he came out he was startled to see 20armed horsemen waiting to escort him.“why do we need so many people. Are we notgoing to Kongu kingdom? Is that place still notpart of Madurai Sultan? The people there arepaying taxes to sultan. Under these circumstancesif Vijayanagara armymen are seen will it notbecome a reason for a fight?” enquired Vallabha. The commander was head down, silent for a while

and then got strength to answer the query ofVallabha.

“Sir, don’t you know what happened here recently?”asked the commander“what? What has happened?” enquired Vallabha“   As soon as they heard the news thatSambuvaraya was defeated, the Kongu satraps

have announced that they have no more allegiancewith Sultans and they will accept the suzeraintyof Vijayanagar and will give their taxes to theVijayanagar king and not the Sultan any more. The message regarding this development has beensent to Rajagambhira kingdom where our kingis currently camping. Even before that the localVijayanagar representative of Mulvoy has acceptedour proposal and hence all the Kongu provincesare part of Vijayanagar now” said the commander.Vallabha was very happy. He asked with enthusiasm “Oh! Commander sir!Is this true? Is what you say true! ”“Yes sir. We have the royal emblem of Varahaand wherever this is accepted on the way, allare our land belonging to Vijayanagar empire. ”Replied the commander.“Aha! Has my country also become independent?I feel proud about this” said Vallabha.“We are also happy, sir. And for security reasonswe wanted to postpone this journey of the princesby a few more days” said the commander.“Why? Why do you want to postpone the journey?”enquired Vallabha.“Since the Sultan had lost Thondai mandalam

and kongu we don’t know what his reaction willbe. Considering the security we are planning tobring in a portion of our army for security of thisplace. Also we would like to inspect the routefor security and if secure, we now don’t have toreach south of Pandya kingdom via Malayalaprovince. We can reach via Kongu provinces inshort route” said the commander.“Ok. That is also a good idea” responded Vallabha. When he said that he felt as if the Princess isvisiting Sathyamangalam and meeting his motherVaasanthika. He felt as if his mother is welcoming

the Princess. After some amount of hallucinations,Vallabha started to leave with others.  (to be continued)

NEWS PURI TEMPLE ROW BRINGS RELIEFTO NAVEEN BUT REDEMPTION LIES IN RESTORATION

When Biju Patnaik shot off a letter to Narasimha RaoIn 1992 when two stones fell from the main temple roof, the then CM Biju Patnaik shot off a letter to PM Narasimha Rao seeking protection of the temple. Within two days, ASI DG

reached Puri. Repair work started in three weeks and sanctum sanctorum was handed over by May-end the next year.ASI spent only L9.38 crore on shrine in 30 yearsThe whole issue is symptomatic of the deep-seated indifference of ASI towards the shrine. It has been in charge of conservation of the shrine since 1975.According to information available through RTI queries,it has spent barely about Rs 9.38 crore in 30 years (between 1985 and 2014).........With the annual Rath Yatra drawing close, attention ofthe entire the State now stands shifted to the conservationof the holy monument at the hands of the nationalarchaeology body. While the ASI has invited sharp criticismfor its apathetic attitude, the BJD Government also facedflak for sitting pretty, prompting the CM to shoot off a letter

to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 13, two daysbefore Mitra put in his papers. Mitra’s resignation led toimmediate outrage  —  he still has not disclosed whattriggered the decision eight years after he was made amember of the panel  —  but the sheer timing sure hassaved Naveen the blushes as his party was at its wit’send over how to take on a unified Opposition. With UnionMinister Dharmendra Pradhan taking up the matter withMahesh Sharma, his counterpart in the Culture Ministry, the spate of events has taken a new turn.A Central team, led by Union Culture Secretary, has visitedthe Puri Temple to take stock of the situation. On his part,Naveen also held a telephonic talk with the PM beforemaking an on-the-spot assessment of “Jagamohan”  tosilence the critics. Mitra’s claim that the “Jagamohan,”main prayer hall of the shrine, is waiting to crumble ifimmediate repair and restoration measures are nottaken has grabbed the centre-stage with all politicalparties now making a beeline to the temple. The whole issue, though, is symptomatic of the deep-seated indifference of ASI towards the shrine. It has beenin charge of conservation of the shrine since 1975 andwell aware of the stress the 900 year-old structure hasundergone. According to information available throughRTI queries, the ASI has spent barely about `9.38 crorein 30 years (between 1985 and 2014) which speaksvolumes of its disinterest. The ASI had formed two teamsin 2006 — a 14-member technical committee to assessthe damage and suggest restoration measures apartfrom a six-member core committee to supervise thewhole process. The core committee has not met evenonce. On the other hand, the technical panel, as perMitra’s own admission, was allowed to inspect the“Jagamohan” only last year during which it came acrossthe cracks on the beams and columns. Its suggestion toinstall stainless steel frames to support the structurewas apparently rejected by the ASI which had alsorequested another team from IIT, Madras to suggestremedial measures.Last year, when the expert panel headed by its permanentchairman Prof AP Gupta, a former Head of the Departmentof Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, inspected thetemple, it had detected major cracks in the inner roof of

“Jagamohan”  and on the north east beam and supportcolumn. It had then suggested that ASI must carry outrepairs to bring structural stability to the main prayer hall. What took the ASI so long to act needs a thoroughinvestigation. There is nothing new about the decayingstructural stability of the Puri temple which is thronged by

millions of devotees every year but the ASI has long beenat loggerheads with the State Government and SriJagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) over therestrictions the latter imposes during restoration worksin view of the multitude of daily rituals. This has to besorted out by taking the servitors’ bodies on board beforethings get out of hand. The 12th century shrine is one ofthe four “dhamas” of the country and an emotive issuefor both Odias and crores of Hindus. The fallout of ASI’s actions will not only be under publicscanner but could also snowball into a major politicalissue. Besides, the “Jagamohan”  is nothing less thanan architectural marvel given the fact that the pyramidstructure (Pidha Deula) of the main prayer hall has beenbuilt without use of mortar. The State administration must

also take equal responsibility by mounting pressure onASI instead of passing the buck onto the Centre whichhas been a pattern with it. In 1992 when two stones, weighing about a tonne each, fell from the main templeroof on August 13, the then CM Biju Patnaik shot off aletter to the PM Narasimha Rao seeking immediateprotection of the temple.Within two days, the ASI DG reached Puri. The repair andrestoration work started in three weeks and the sanctumsanctorum was handed over to the temple administrationby May-end the next year. Why similar measures cannotbe taken up now is beyond logic.

(The New Indian Express 23-05-2016)ARCHAKAS URGE CM TO APPROVE SERVICE RULES

Leaders of the A.P. Archaka Samakhya and Temples’

Protection Movement on Friday urged Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu to expeditiously approve “The AndhraPradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions andEndowments Hereditary Archakas Qualification andEmoluments Rules, 2015,” which is pending with himsince December 2015.The approval of the service rules would benefit thousandsof hereditary archakas, who are bogged down by non-clearance of retirement benefits, succession rules andtheir service issues, Temples Protection MovementConvenor C.S. Rangarajan asserted at a meeting at thePrathama Nandi temple in Nandyal in Kurnool district.Tax on donationsThe government was not granting a pie to temples, butthey were functioning with the contributions made by

devotees. Ironically, the State government is levying a taxof 21.5 per cent on donations made by the devotees totemples and utilising the taxes to pay the salaries ofemployees right from the executive staff to theCommissioner of Endowments, Mr. Rangarajan stated. However, the temple employees were being treated assecond-grade citizens, he lamented. Major demandssuch as implementation of PRC, regularisation ofservices of non-muster roll workers and compassionateappointments were pending for long, he said.A.P. Archaka Samakhya organising secretary P. Rambabu, secretary K. Srinivas and others were present.

Nookalamma temple awaits woman priestAt a time when women's entry into temples has beenrecognised as a fundamental right, here is a classic caseof a woman priest at Nookalamma Ammavari Temple atKakinada, who was baulked by the authorities to succeedas a temple priest. Strange as it may sound, but it’s true.

Nookalamma Ammavari Temple (NAT) has the customof appointing women priests ever since it wasconsecrated in 1975.In line with the tradition, Endowments officials atRajahmundry and Kakinada submitted a report soon afterthe passing away of Kasi Ratnam, a woman priest (Asadi),stating that her younger daughter, Madada Kanchana, beappointed as the ‘Asadi’  on compassionate grounds. Anappeal was made to the Endowments authorities thatKanchana had all the qualifications to be appointed as‘Asadi’. She had passed Class X and cleared the requiredDevatha Agamamana Examination. She had experience of performing all liturgical rituals byway of assisting her mother. Ch Hanumantha Rao,deputy commissioner, made an appeal to the

Endowments Department to appoint surviving daughteras priest in place of her deceased mother. The reportdetails the practice of appointing of ‘Asadis’ since 1975.First ‘Asadi’ appointed was Bade Appayamma, daughterof Pikki Adayaa. She was succeeded by BadeKodandamma, daughter of Pikki Adayya. After the demise of Kodandamma, Bade Kasi Ratnam, daughter of Gandha Polayya, was appointed. It clearlyshows that persons belonging to same family have beenappointed as Archakas at the NAT. The temple was alsohaving sizable income. For the Assessment Year 2012-13, the income of the temple was Rs 7,60,219. It rose toRs 8,23,467 during the Assessment Year 2013-14. Thetemple posted an income of Rs 6,07,513 during theAssessment Year 2014-15.

Bade Kasi Ratnam had worked in the temple for a periodof 20 years and was drawing a monthly salary of Rs6,000. She passed away on January 20, 2015. Theemployee ID of the deceased was 499 and the temple IDis 10888. (Metro India 24-5-2016)

Ghanapatis’ children in search of their roots“Kramapati”, “Ghanapati”, “Somayaji” and “Vajapayee” aresome of the highest degrees in Vedic education and thosewho have achieved them will be honoured by adding thetag to their name. Delta areas in East and West Godavaridistricts are not only popular for paddy production, but alsofor the rich Vedic tradition for more than 500 years. The Vedic scholars settled down mostly in Agraharams(specially designed lanes) like Peruru in Amalapuram

rural mandal, Nandampudi, Vyaghreswaram,Vakkalanka, Gangalakurru and Tondavaram villages inAmbajipeta mandal of Konaseema region in EastGodavari and the most popular village Iragavaram inWest Godavari. Ganti Lakshmana Somayajulu, GantiPurushothama Somayajulu, Nemani SomasekharaAvadhanulu and Nemani Jwala Narasimha Avadhanuluare popular in Peruru and Amabjipeta mandals.According to Nemani Sriramachandra Murthy, Head ofHDFC Bank, Raichur, many of their families have settledin Nagpur, Mumbai and Chennai about two generationsago for livelihood, particularly in Railways, though they

had learnt conducting Yagnas and Homams and werewell-versed in Vedic sastras. This happened in the 1950s and then in my generationyoungsters started going to Bengaluru and Chennai forsoftware jobs as Vedic rituals would not earn bread andbutter, he added.

“But, there was a sea change since the last one decadeas the youngsters started looking back to their roots. They are coming to Agraharams. Every year during thesummer they are coming with families and spendingalmost a month here to learn daily rituals like ‘SandhyaVandanam’  from their grandfathers,” Mr. Murthy added.Pidaparthi Sivarama Sarma of Sri Dattatreya Veda VidyaGurukulam, Rajamahendravaram, said though the youthwere getting attracted to Vedic culture and learning rituals, many scholars were not encouraging them to enter theirown profession or learn the Vedas.Dr. Gullapalli Dattatreya Ghanapati, who had doneresearch in Vedic literature and head of the Gurukulam, said once the number of institutions went up, the nextgenerations would automatically carry the torch of theVedas to the masses.Like Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi, the young generationof the Agraharams wants to preserve the Vedic culture inthese districts, says Nukala Bapanna Somayajulu.Maha Mahopadhyaya and Vedic adviser to SringeriPeetam Sri Sri Viswanatha Gopalakrishna said the Eastand West Godavari districts were the only places whichwould continue to produce hundreds and thousands of

    Vedic scholars. (The Hindu 25-5-2016)

Consequently, the ordersissued in the references 1st  to 6th  read above will come into force.2. The Commissioner, Endowments shall take necessary action accordingly.

(BY ORDER AND IN THE NAME OF THE GOVERNOR OF ANDHRA PRADESH)J.S.V. PRASAD

    PRINCIPAL SECRETARY TO GOVERNMENT

The Andhra Pradesh Government through the above orders has withdrawn the abeyance order on severalGOs issued due to pressure from certain section of the Endowments Department Officials who were obstructingthe much needed reforms. The fact that the Government could overcome the pressure from the DepartmentOfficials is a welcome sign for future. The key initiatives which will now come into force are :-

    1. More Powers to Dharmika Parishad in recruitment and promotions of Endowments Department Officialsat various levels. The GO 337 gives such powers to the DharmikaParishad which if implemented willensure that Endowments Officials with Dharmik mentality and knowledgeable on Hindu Dharma alone

are appointed a key reform initiative.2. Rationalization of Contributions is another much needed initiative which was proposed in GO 927 but

was again kept in abeyance due to pressure from Officials. This GO orders that the contribution to EAFfrom which Endowments Department Officials salaries are paid be reduced from 12 % to 8%. Simultaneouslythe GO proposes the increase in contribution to Common Good Fund from 5% to 9%. This increasedcontribution should be utilized for undertaking much needed renovation of ancient temples and also toprovide funds for Dhoopa Dheepa Naivedyam in low income temples. Further the GO orders that 2%of the CGF contribution should be used for Hindu Dharmik activities targeted to propagation of Hindureligion reducing conversions.

One other important aspect of the GO is complete exemption from contribution for low income 6C categoryinstitutions. Enabling them to use the save money for better pay towards employees and also for otherDharmik activities.
