VANDERBIJLPARK. - The environmental pressure group SAVE last week issued a warn-ing that its currently unsafe to swim in the Vaal River or drink water directly from it. This follows after green and dangerous blue algae were spotted at places in the river in the past few weeks. On Saturday February 25, while the international Wake Board Competition was in progress, a parent phoned SAVE, reporting that their child - a participant - had developed a bad skin rash and had to be given antihis-tamine. This prompted an aerial survey by

Vaal water dangerous to humans and animalsenvironmentalist Professor Johann Tempelhoff (see also Sedibeng Ster letter) and a warning by SAVE not to swim in the Vaal River. The aerial survey on Sunday morning (February 26) from about 07:15 to 08:50, found that the rivers water from the Vaal Dam to the Letabo Weir appeared normal, except for some water hyacinth and foam bubbles. The Letabo Weir downstream was pitch-black and, further down, green algae in different shades of green (from bright fluorecent green to dark green) could been seen. The Klip River was pitch black

where it flows into the Vaal River. From the Riviera Hotel downstream there were plenty of green algae. In Lochvaal and 7km upstream from the Barrage Wall the water was very green with algae and what looked like a very polluted Hartebeespoort Dam.

SAVE still regards the water quality as too dangerous for humans and animals to have direct contact with it.

    * Vaalweekblads sister publication Beeld reports that an above-average amount of e-coli was found in the Vaal Rivers water in the past

week. A safe level of e-coli for people who take part in waterssport is 1 000 units per 100 ml water but at certain places it far exceeds the safe level. At an observation point in the Kliprivier at Vereeniging the e. coli count was 2 359 units per 100 ml water. Further downstream at Dickensopark the count was 1 986. In the Rietspruit at Lochvaal, where it debouches into the Vaalriver Barrage, an e. coli count of 1 137 units per 100 ml water was reported.

SASOLBURG. Metsimaholo Municipality is num-ber one in the province and position five in South Africa in terms of financial stability. We are aiming high, making sure that through the assistance of the community we will be able to maintain our high stan-dard, says Executive Mayor Brutus Mahlaku.

Speaking during a three-day Metsimaholo Munici-pal Strategic Planning Session hosted at Maccauvlei on February 29, Cllr Mahlaku said the aim of the session was to review and discuss the budget and performances assessments including advantage and their disadvantages.

He told the media that they reviewed the progress with regard to the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

The five-year budget is the vision of the municipal and is still relevant.

The budget tabled before the communities has to be in line with the manifesto of the organisation. Among the issues discussed and reviewed was to establish a five-year strategic plan.

On the Special Development Frame Work, the mayor said people have to invest in the municipality.

We want to consider all contractors with outsourc-ing services doing business with the municipality.

Chief Financial Officer Motshidisi Mokoena said the new municipality budget starts on July 1 2012 and runs until June 2015.

It is a process to get a clean audit and our audit opinion speaks volumes, she said.

Wakeboarder breaks legDENEYSVILLE. a 24-year-old wakeboarder sustained serious injuries while boarding at the Vaal Dam Nature Reserve in Deneysville.

The incident happened on Saturday 3 March around 11:00 but the cause of the incident is unknown at this stage. The wakeboarder was being towed behind a boat when he sustained the injuries. The bystanders accompanying the man quickly rushed him out of the water.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the man by the side of the dam in severe pain. Due to the injuries sustained and the distance to the nearest appropriate medical facility, on-scene paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene. The patient then received treatment at the scene for a suspected broken right leg as well as suspected back-and-neck injuries. He was later airlifted to hospital for further medical attention - Andr Visser (ER24).
