Entertainment is becoming edutainmentwith the launch of a new project to pro-mote safe sex among teenagers.

On Friday Ravensmead High School wasa hive of activity as singer Rique Nelsoncame “back to school” to launch a partner-ship with Partners In Sexual Health to en-courage the learners to follow their positivedreams.Follow Your Dreams is a project that will

focus on motivating young people to pre-serve and live healthy lifestyles explainedDumisani Gabula, marketing and fundrais-ing manager for Partners in Sexual Health.“The campaign originated from Rique’s

struggles in his young life and how he man-aged to rise in his music career against allodds,” says Gabula.“We are an NGO that focuses on sexual

and reproductive health and rights, thatjoined forces with Nelson to bring positivehealth messages to our youth.“This campaign uses the edutainment ap-

proach where we combine education withentertainment and the underlying theme isto prevent teenage pregnancy in ourschools.”

InspiredHe also pointed out that the learners were

also inspired and motivated because of theinvolvement of former learners who were

making their dreams come true.“Our CEO, Patsy de Lora, is also an ex-

learner from the school and explained tothem the importance of making their sexualhealth a major priority in their lives.“She started this organisation in 2009 and

it has grown into a massive organisationthat runs more than eight projects in vari-ous parts of the country. “According to her there is no greater plan

than to respond to the needs of our youngpeople,who find themselves face to facewithdevastating diseases such as HIV/Aids, andsexual and human rights violations.”The organisation is active in various

schools in the Western Cape, where it is im-plementing HIV/Aids peer education pro-

grammes, sexual and reproductive healthand rights programmes and life-skills orien-tation.“Our presence in these schools goes be-

yond the call of duty,” added Gabula.“There were times where we had to inter-

vene in gang violence, family matters andcommunity issues butwe are convinced thatyoung people will not develop into upstand-ing citizens if their challenges are not ad-dressed.”Another important member of the team is

Monray Lopes, another ex-learner, who isnow brand manager for Nelson.“Along with Rique, we want to emphasise

Scores of Capetonians found themselves onthe wrong side of the law during the Cityof Cape Town’s law enforcement operationsthis past weekend.Several transgressors were arrested anditems, ranging from illegal narcotics to ille-gally poached abalone, were confiscated.The City of Cape Town’s Liquor Enforce-ment Unit focused on problematic shebeensand during a joint operation with the SouthAfrican Police Services (SAPS) issued sev-en written warnings to shebeens operatingwithout authorisation in Kuils River.

City of Cape Town metro police officersclamped down on drunk drivers and drugoffenders. A total of 78 suspects were arrest-ed and two unlicensed firearms recovered.Some 18motoristswere arrested inDurban-ville for drunken driving.Officers also responded to complaints ofillegal street racing in Belville and EersteRiver on Sunday 25 August. One driver re-fused to stop for the officers and a high-speed pursuit ensued. This ended in Glen-haven, but only after the driver had collidedwith two of the Ghost Squad vehicles.

Operation Combat is still on the march inDelft.Within the space of two hours during an

operation last week Delft police recoveredtwo illegal firearms and arrested four sus-pects for the illegal possession of firearms.According to the station commander,

Brig Hendrik Jansen the operation formedpart of OperationCombatwhich focused ongangs and drug activities and the elimina-tion thereof.During the operation on Tuesday 20 Au-

gust, which started at 19:00, several gangand drug hotspots were searched.While at a house in Canberra Street they

recovered a .36 calibre revolver belongingto an owner from Pretoria.“This gun was not reported stolen,” said

Jansen.“Thismeans thatwewill be investigating

the circumstances surrounding the disap-pearance of this gun and if neglect can beproved then the owner will be charged aswell.”Police also arrested two men, one of un-

known age and the other of 27 years.Twohours later police recovered another

firearm, a Glock Austria 9mm pistol, withone magazine and several rounds whenthey searched a group of men.This firearm was reported stolen in

Steenberg in 2011 and a 33-year-old malewas arrested.Jansen added that the seizure is a token

of dedication on the part of Delft SAPS toeradicate illegal firearms in the hands ofunscrupulous and irresponsible people.“We want to warn criminals that we will

be doing more of these operations in the fu-ture to rid our communities of thisscourge.”

Great enthusiasm for libraryBelvue Primary school is truly striving tolive up to its motto, knowledge is light, withthe opening of a new library at the school.

The school opened its doors to a roaringcrowd of enthusiastic and appreciativelearners and educators on Tuesday 20 Au-gust, as they officially launched the new fa-cility.

Situated next to the school’s Reading Ad-venture Room (RAR), the library is another“adventure” itself. RAR is a long-termproject, aimed at improving literacy levelsamong primary school learners.

The project is sponsored by CoronationFund Managers and the special readingroom at Belvue Primary was designed andimplemented by Living Through Learning(LTL) a registered NPO/PBO in the educa-tion sector.

This organisation was established in Jan-uary 2012 and is situated in Wynberg withthe mission to ensure that youth are ableto read and write successfully, that properbasics are trained and instilled at Grade 1or foundation level to educators, parents

and learners and to provide additional as-sistance in technical subjects to learners.

LTL provided the games, books, manualsand other resources for the reading room atthe school.

This approach enables young children tolearn how to read and write step-by-step andin a manner that is also enjoyable for them.

In October, school libraries all over thecountry and the world will be celebratingInternational School Library Month underthe theme; “School Libraries: Doorways toLife” where school libraries get an opportu-nity to showcase what libraries have doneand can do for the learners.

Readers were gathering in Belhar last weekwhen District 4 of the city’s Library and In-formation Services hosted their annualreading competition at the Belhar CivicCentre.Grade 7 learners from various primary

schools represented 15 libraries in this dis-trict and the competition was tough as thereaders vied for the top prizes in the Eng-lish, Afrikaans and Xhosa categories.The history of the competition was the

brainchild of the Valhalla Park library staffback in 2003 to improve reading skills, help

create a literate society and an interest inreading.It targetedGrade 7s because therewas the

feeling at the time that once the grade sev-ens leave primary school they avoided thelibrary and that there was a need to dosomething to get them involved in someform of reading activity to lure them to thelibrary.The first competition was held in 2003 at

Valhalla Park library where the five localprimary schools participated.Since then it has grown into amajor event

on the library services calendar with lots ofexcitement among learners.

The mid-point assessment of the city’shome composting study reflects phenome-nal results showing 12,94 tons of organicwaste being diverted from landfill sites infour months.The City of Cape Town’s Home Compost-

ing Study, which began inMarch this year,has now passed its mid-point. So far, a totalof 45 449 litres (12,94 tons) of organic gardenand kitchen waste has been diverted fromlandfill sites.The impressive results of the study were

achieved by 172 regularly participatinghouseholds located across four suburbs.These are Edgemead, Heathfield, Scotts-ville and Bongweni.“The study came about as a result of the

overuse of the city’s landfill sites for gardenand organic waste which can be compostedand re-used. At present, 95 000 tons ofhousehold garden and organic waste and80 000 tons of household kitchenwaste is di-rected to the city’s landfill sites each year,”said the city’s Ernest Sonnenberg.“On average, a household generates ap-

proximately 11 kg of garden and organicwaste and 10 kg of organic kitchen wasteper month.“We are urging residents to get involved

in efforts to reduce waste generation andtry home composting. Every small effortwill help us to reduce damage to our envi-ronment,” said Sonnenberg.

City compoststudy success

Cape Town’s City Parks Departmentis keeping a close watch on the risinggroundwater table in its cemeteries.The rising groundwater levels are

exacerbated during periods of severestorms or excessively rainy weather– even if it is just for a day or two,amedia release from the City of CapeTown reads.Plans are in place to minimise the

effects of this annual rainy season inthe Western Cape. This may includefamilies needing to sign an accept-ance of limited depth form for burialin their private grave – to allow forthe burial in a slightly shallowergrave.The City Parks Department has al-

so recently provided an above-ground burial system, the MaitlandMausoleum.Furthermore, the new Wal-

lacedene Cemetery (near Kraaifon-tein) is now open for burials andWel-moed Cemetery (in Eerste River) hasbeen extended, with extensive cut-offdrains designed to redirect waterpast the cemetery and to reduce thelikelihood of a high water table re-stricting burial space.Due to religious and cultural pref-

erences, 60 % of Capetonians chooseburial rather than cremation.The highwater table, however, has

an impact on the total number of bur-ials that can take place at any giventime.In shallow, private graves, the lim-

ited depth precludes a second burialon top of the originally buried coffin.The cemetery booking offices are

receiving weekly updates from ceme-tery supervisors on the number ofgraves suitable for burials underthese specific conditions.Under adverse conditions, the
