    Obtain a Birth Certificate for Your Child Many hospitals will help you apply for the birth certifi-cate during your stay. If yours doesnt, or you had a midwife or birthed at home, you can obtain abirth certificate by completing an application on the Service Canada website.

    Apply for Maternity/Paternity Leave Employment Insurance provides maternity and paternitybenefits to individuals who are expecting and having a baby. You can apply for maternity orpaternity leave on the Service Canada website.

    Ensure You Received a Statement of Live Birth From the Hospital or the Midwife All provincesrequire that a statement of live birth is filed. This form should come from your hospital or midwife.

    Apply for Canada Child Benefits (CCB) & Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) You only have toapply once and your eligibility is determined each year through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).You will require the social insurance number of both parents for the application.

    Get a Provincial Health Care Card Ensure you child has provincial health care coverage by obtain-ing a provincial health care card for your little one. You can find the application website for eachprovince.

    Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for Your Child Applying for your childs social insurancenumber early is easily done though the Service Canada website. Youll need a copy of the childsbirth certificate and the SIN numbers of the parents. You will need a SIN number for your child toopen an RESP. You can apply for a SIN online.

    Get a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for Your Child Investing in an RESP is a greatstep in saving for your childs education. The Federal government will contribute 20% a year (up to amax of $500 per year) of your contribution until your child is 18 years old (max: $7200). Opening anRESP also will trigger the Canada Education Savings Program that awards a grant to families basedon the amount contributed to an RESP for the child. The CESG money will be deposited directly intothe childs RESP. For more information on how to open an RESP for your child, and the Canada Sav-ings Program, visit the Canada Revenue Website.

    Adjust Your Car Insurance Phone your car insurance provider and adjust your car insurance plan.If one of the parents plans to stay at home, you may find yourself saving some additional money onyour insurance.

    Update or Create a Will Ensure that in the event that a new guardian needs to be named forchild, that your wishes are clearly stated by having an updated will. Without a will, a court will decidewho gets custody of minor children.
