kennistechnologie, design en sport streeft naar excellente prestaties. Ook op het gebied

van kunst en cultuur is eindhoven ambitieus. Onder de naam ‘2018 eindhoven/brabant

samen culturele hoofdstad’ dingen we naar de titel van culturele hoofdstad in 2018.

Eindhoven beschikt over fantastische culturele voorzieningen, waaronder uiteraard Muziekgebouw

Frits Philips Eindhoven. Enkele jaren geleden is het ingrijpend gerestyled; een fraai voorbeeld van

Dutch Design. Daarnaast beschikken beide zalen van het Muziekgebouw over een internationaal

TroMP Percussion Eindhoven is daar een goed voorbeeld van. De eerste editie vond plaats in 1971.

In veertig jaar tijd is het uitgegroeid tot een gezaghebbend muzikaal evenement. Dat is ook het

oordeel van de rijksoverheid. Niet voor niets kende het Fonds Podiumkunsten eerder dit jaar

TroMP als enige concours in Nederland een structurele subsidie toe voor de periode 2013-2016.

onlangs selecteerde de internationale jury van TroMP de dertig kandidaten die vanaf 2 november

in Eindhoven met elkaar de strijd aangaan. En zo hoort dat. of het nou gaat om hoogwaardige

kennistechnologie, design, sport of muziek: wie zich wil meten met de top, moet het podium op!

Daar worden de prijzen verdeeld.

renowned. This is why many musicians choose to record their CDs here in

Eindhoven. Together with other cultural bodies, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven

offers the inhabitants of our region a varied and qualitative cultural programme.

TroMP Percussion Eindhoven is another great example of what the city has to

offer. The first edition took place in 1971. During the forty years that followed

it has grown to become a prestigious musical event. And this has now been

recognized by the Dutch government. It is with good reason that the Fonds

Podiumkunsten (Fund for Performing Arts) awarded TroMP a structural subsidy

earlier this year, making it the only competition in the Netherlands to receive

such funding for the period 2013-2016. ‘The festival offers quality, ambiance

and excellent craftsmanship’, said the commission.

The international TroMP jury recently selected the thirty candidates that will

start competing with each other on 2 November. And rightly so. Whether it’s

high-end technology, design, sport or music: if you want to reach the top, you

have to stand in the spotlight! It’s on stage that the prizes are won.

een schenking van naamgever dr. ir. Theo Tromp in combinatie

met een bijdrage van de gemeente eindhoven zorgde veertig

jaar geleden voor het ontstaan van een tweejaarlijks muziek-

concours voor jonge musici. inmiddels is TROMP uitgegroeid

tot een internationaal evenement van allure.

ook in 2012 presenteert TroMP drie hoofdactiviteiten: een concours

van wereldformaat, aansprekende educatieve projecten, en een

festival waarin internationale artiesten in bijzondere muzikale

ontmoetingen buiten hun eigen grenzen en genres treden. Een

succesvolle formule. Niet voor niets kende het Fonds voor de

Podiumkunsten in augustus jongstleden een vierjarige structurele

subsidie aan TroMP toe, het enige Nederlandse concours dat deze

eer te beurt viel.

Niet alleen tijdens de concoursperiode in november, maar ook daarbuiten

opereert TroMP steeds meer wereldwijd. Zo worden er concerten

voor de laureaten georganiseerd in binnen- en buitenland en tijdens

gerenommeerde festivals.

Meer dan 70 jonge slagwerkers uit 21 landen schreven zich in voor

het TroMP Concours 2012. De internationale jury, bestaande uit

onder anderen Lucas Vis, Pete Lockett, Arnold Marinissen en Nancy

Zeltsman, nodigde uiteindelijk 30 kandidaten van zestien verschillende

nationaliteiten uit om met elkaar de strijd aan te gaan. Namens TroMP

Percussion Eindhoven een warm welkom aan al deze deelnemers

die naar Eindhoven zijn gekomen om uit te maken wie zich straks de

muzikale opvolger mag noemen van Alexej Gerassimez, de winnaar

van TroMP 2010.

a waRM welcOMeForty years ago, a donation from the co-founder, dr. ir. Theo

Tromp, combined with a contribution from the eindhoven city

council led to the creation of a biennial music competition

for young musicians. TROMP has now grown to become an

international, alluring event.

The 2012 edition of TroMP once again includes three main

components: a world-class competition, inspiring educational projects

and a festival during which internationally renowned artists perform

in unique musical encounters, beyond their own musical boundaries

and genres. A successful formula and it is with good reason that the

Performing Arts Fund awarded TroMP with a four-yearly structural

subsidy last August; the only Dutch competition to be given this

honour.

TroMP is not only active during the competition in Eindhoven, but also

increasingly further afield. Concerts are organised for the competition

laureates both in the Netherlands and abroad and during famous

festivals.

More than 70 musicians from 21 countries applied to participate in the

TroMP Competition 2012. The international jury, including Lucas Vis,

Pete Lockett, Arnold Marinissen and Nancy Zeltsman, eventually chose

30 candidates with sixteen different nationalities to compete against

each other. on behalf of TroMP Percussion Eindhoven, a warm

welcome to all of these participants who have travelled to Eindhoven

to determine who may call themselves the musical successor of

Alexej Gerassimez, the winner of TroMP 2010.

en opstap voor jong percussietalent. ‘het TROMP concours krijgt veel internationale

aandacht, en als je tijdens zo’n concours opvalt, ben je meteen over de hele wereld in

beeld’, aldus alexej gerassimez, overtuigend winnaar in 2010.

‘A natural born soloist! An artist!’ Dat waren de woorden die de jury bij de vorige editie van

TroMP over had voor de Duitse percussionist Alexej Gerassimez. Hij won glansrijk. ‘Dat was heel

belangrijk’, zegt hij nu. ’De overwinning vertelde mij dat ik op de goede weg was. Ik heb al jong als

percussionist gekozen voor een bepaalde benadering van de muziek en een focus op het solisten-

dom. Dat bleek zijn vruchten af te werpen. Ik wil de muziek transparant maken voor het publiek,

een verhaal vertellen, en dat werd gewaardeerd. ook verder heeft het concours mij veel gebracht.

Het TroMP Concours krijgt heel veel internationale aandacht in de percussiewereld en als je tijdens

zo’n concours opvalt ben je meteen over de hele wereld in beeld. Michael Torke, de componist

van het percussieconcert Mojave dat we tijdens de finale moesten spelen, heeft mij bijvoorbeeld

gevraagd het werk in de Verenigde Staten te komen uitvoeren. ook het contact met andere

slagwerkers is heel verrijkend. Iedereen neemt zijn eigen stijl, zijn eigen gewoonten mee, dat wissel

je uit. Dat is één grootse ervaring geweest. Als musicus vind ik het belangrijk om zoveel mogelijk

informatie op te zuigen. Daar hoort ook bij het delen van ervaringen met andere percussionisten

uit alle delen van de wereld. Dat komt weer terug in mijn interpretatie van de muziek en dat

maakt mijn muzikale verhalen kleurrijker.’

reassured me that I was going in the right direction. As a young percussionist

I have chosen a certain approach to my music, with a focus on playing as a

soloist, and this seems to have paid off! I want to make music transparent for

my audience, to tell a story and this has been appreciated. The contest

has been so beneficial for me. The TroMP Competition receives a lot of

international attention, and those that get noticed during such a contest will

be in the spotlight all over the world. Michael Torke, the composer of the

percussion concert Mojave that we played during the finale, has asked me to

play his piece in the United States. Meeting the other percussionists is also very

enriching. Everyone brings their own style, their own standards, and shares

them. That’s a huge experience. As a musician I find it important to absorb as

much information as possible. This includes sharing experiences with other

percussionists from all corners of the world. This can be heard in my

interpretation of the music and it enriches my musical stories.’

Lucas Vis is een veelgevraagd specialist op het gebied van

hedendaagse muziek. Hij werkte met beroemde componisten

en dirigeerde talrijke wereldpremières. Vis dirigeerde

verscheidene binnen- en buitenlandse orkesten en was van

1979 tot 1982 vaste dirigent van Het Brabants Orkest. Van

1988 tot 1996 was hij chef-dirigent van het Noordhollands

Philharmonisch in Haarlem. Aan het Conservatorium van

Amsterdam, waarvan hij van 1998 tot 2005 artistiek directeur

was, doceert hij orkestdirectie. Lucas Vis fungeert geregeld als

jurylid.

Lucas Vis is a highly sought after specialist in the field of

contemporary music. He has worked with famous composers and

has conducted numerous world premières with both national and

international orchestras. He was permanent conductor for Het

Brabants Orkest from 1979 to 1982 and was head conductor of

the Noordhollands Philharmonic in Haarlem from 1988 to 1996. Vis

teaches orchestral direction at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam,

where he held the position of artistic director from 1998 to 2005.

‘Ik ben net als bij de vorige editie voorzitter van de jury. Ik let er op dat elk jurylid geheel zelfstandig

tot een oordeel komt en dat eventuele discussies strak verlopen. Ook is het belangrijk dat iedereen

zich kan vinden in het uiteindelijke oordeel. Verder laat ik mij ook dit jaar weer volledig verrassen,

want ik was niet bij de voorselectie. Maar afgaande op TROMP 2010 zal het niveau weer hoog tot

zeer hoog zijn. Vooral slagwerkers die in de finale komen, zullen elkaar niet veel ontlopen. Die zijn

reusachtig goed. Bij het eindoordeel gaat het dan om heel kleine dingen, zoals een percussionist die

begeleid door een orkest geheel boven zichzelf uitstijgt of een ander die net iets meer in zijn schulp

kruipt. Verder let ik eigenlijk altijd op dezelfde dingen, en die zijn niet anders dan bij een piano- of een

vioolconcours. Het gaat toch elke keer om een goede techniek, de mate van artisticiteit en de kracht

van de overdracht. Het begrip van de muziek die iemand speelt is heel belangrijk. En wat ik vooral bij

slagwerkers doorslaggevend vind is de mate van professionaliteit. Een percussionist heeft vaak heel

veel voorbereiding nodig omdat hij of zij geregeld meerdere instrumenten bespeelt. Welke

bewegingen moet hij maken, hoe stelt hij zijn instrumentarium op, hoe subtiel beroert hij elk

afzonderlijk instrument. Dat zijn zaken die men nog wel eens vergeet, maar ze kunnen voor een

slagwerker het verschil maken tussen een gemiddelde uitvoering en een topoptreden.’

‘I am lucky enough to be chairman of the jury, just like the previous edition. It is my job to make sure that

each other jury member comes to an independent decision and that any discussions run smoothly. It is also

important that everyone agrees with the final decision. I’m sure I’ll be pleasantly surprised again this year, as

I was not present during the preliminary selection. If TROMP 2010 is anything to go by, the quality will once

again be very high this year. There will be very little between the percussionists that reach the final. They are

all incredibly good. The final decision is then based on the finer details. A percussionist, accompanied by an

orchestra, that surpasses all expectations, for example. Or another that visibly thrives during the contest. I

always look for the same things, and these are no different during a piano or a violin competition. It always

comes down to a good technique, the level of artistry and the power of the delivery. Their personal interpre-

tation of the music is also very important. And what I find particularly crucial with percussionists is their level

of professionalism. A percussionist usually has to spend a great deal of time preparing a piece because he

or she often plays multiple instruments. The movements they make, the positioning of the instruments, the

subtlety with which they approach each separate instrument. These are things that are easily overlooked, but

for a percussionist they can define the difference between an average performance and a great one.’

U zou hem live moeten meemaken, Pedro Estevan. Zijn

gezicht haast verscholen achter de lange grijze baard,

kleppert hij kalm de castagnetten, koestert rustig de

tamboerijn. Ingehouden, stoïcijns… Maar zó raak! De

meester van de suggestie. oude muziek, de Spaanse

vooral, is Estevans grootste liefde. Estevan studeerde

indertijd bij zeer uiteenlopende musici als Silvio Gualda,

de Senegalees Doudou Ndiaye rose en Glen Vélez.

Estevan is de oprichter van La orquestra de las Nubes en

Percussiegroep Madrid. Hij verzorgde en componeerde

de muziek voor diverse theaterproducties.

You really have to see him live, Pedro Estevan. His face

hidden behind a long grey beard, he calmly clatters the

castanets, softly nurtures the tambourine. restrained,

stoic… But so perfect! The master of suggestion. Historical

music, especially Spanish, is Estevan’s greatest love. Estevan

has studied with a diverse assortment of musicians such as

Silvio Gualda, the Senegalese Doudou Ndiaye rose and Glen

Vélez. Estevan is the founder of La orquestra de las Nubes

and percussion group Madrid. He has written the scores for

various theatre productions.

Internationale bekendheid verwierf ze toen ze in 1995

het internationale marimbaconcours in Luxemburg

won. Zes jaar later werd de Japanse Momoko Kamiya

door de Toyota Foundation gekozen als één van The Top

Ten Young Artists Today, en in 2005 kreeg zij voor haar

muzikale verdiensten de Azalea Cultural Prize van

Kawasaki City. Ze gaf talrijke concerten in Japan en

in het buitenland, jureerde bij acht internationale

concoursen en ze bracht vijf cd’s uit, waarvan Marimba

Japanesque en Asian Scene getuigen van haar

Aziatische achtergrond. De cd Marimba Cocktail won in

1996 de Best recording Prize.

She achieved international recognition in 1995 when she

won the international marimba competition in Luxemburg.

Six years later, the Japanese Momoko Kamiya was chosen by

the Toyota Foundation as one of The Top Ten Young Artists

Today, and in 2005 she was awarded the Azalea Cultural

Prize of Kawasaki City for her musical achievements. She

has given numerous concerts in Japan and other countries,

juried at eight international competitions and has released

five CDs, of which Marimba Japanesque and Asian Scene

testify to her Asian roots.

Jean Geoffroy vier ‘topvrienden’: György Ligeti, Susan

Enan, het Kronos Quartet en Steve reich. Twee grote

hedendaagse componisten, een singer-songwriter en

een experimenteel strijkkwartet: dat zegt ook wat over

Geoffroy. Veelzijdig, onderzoekend, bevlogen. Soleerde

tijdens de meest vooraanstaande percussiefestivals

in Europa, doceert aan het conservatorium van Parijs,

geeft wereldwijd masterclasses. Hij maakte vijf spraak-

makende solo-cd’s gewijd aan de complete suites,

The French percussionist Jean Geoffroy has four ‘top friends’

on his MySpace page: György Ligeti, Susan Enan, the Kronos

Quartet and Steve reich. Two great contemporary composers,

a singer-songwriter and an experimental string quartet: this

says a lot about Geoffroy. Multi-faceted, inquisitive, passionate.

Soloist during Europe’s most prominent percussion festivals,

teacher at the Paris conservatorium, giving masterclasses all

over the world. He has recorded five acclaimed solo CDs of

Bach’s complete suites, partita’s and sonatas.

een concert van Arnold Marinissen. Zijn concerten

zijn vaak ware happenings! Van Afrikaanse drums

tot Chinese tomtoms, van Thaise castagnetten tot

Aziatische gongs en Latijns-Amerikaanse koebellen –

waarin zich dan ook nog wel ‘s mondharp, zingende

zaag of Marinissens eigen stem mengen... Hij was

prominent te gast tijdens het Asia Pacific Festival in

Wellington, Nieuw-Zeeland, hij was samen met Terry

Bozzio, ex-drummer van Frank Zappa, artist in residence

tijdens Traces of rhythm en hij deelde het podium met

de Indiase percussiemeester Trilok Gurtu. Samen met

Anthony Fiumara is Marinissen leider van het Brabantse

ensemble Lunapark.

zOlTán Rácz hungaRy

De in 1960 in Boedapest geboren Zoltán rácz is vooral

bekend van de wereldberoemde Amadinda Percussion

Group, die hij in 1984 oprichtte en waarvan hij tot op

heden de artistiek leider is. Als één van de meest

gerenommeerde slagwerkensembles ter wereld, bracht

het de premières van inmiddels ‘klassiek’ geworden

werken als Four4 van John Cage, Mallet Quartet van

Steve reich, en Sippal, dobbal, nádihegedövel van

György Ligeti. In 2004 werd Amadinda onderscheiden met

de Kossúth Prijs, de hoogste culturele onderscheiding van

Hongarije. rácz is tevens als solist en dirigent actief. Hij

maakte opnames van onder meer Bartóks Sonate voor

twee piano’s en percussie (Decca) en het percussie-

concert van Peter Eötvös (Bis).

Pete Lockett is zeker één van de meest veelzijdige

slagwerkers ter wereld. Van traditionele karnatische en

Hindoestaanse muziek uit India tot de Japanse taiko

drums, van rock tot klassiek, van Arabisch tot electronic.

Hij werkte met artiesten als Björk, Peter Gabriel en

The Verve maar ook met het London Philharmonic

orchestra. Pete is bijzonder actief in de filmindustrie; hij

verzorgde de percussie in blockbusters als The Quiet

American, Moulin rouge en James Bondfilms als Casino

royale en Die Another Day. Lockett is geregeld op

tournee, zoals met Kingdom of rhythm, samen met de

Indiase meesterdrummer Bickram Ghosh. Tussen 2008

en 2011 maakte hij in India maar liefst zeven cd’s.

African drums to Chinese tom-toms, from Thai castanets

to Asian gongs and Latin American cow bells. He was a

prominent guest musician during the Asia Pacific Festival in

Wellington, New-Zeeland, he was artist in residence during

Traces of rhythm together with Terry Bozzio, Frank Zappa’s

ex-drummer and he shared the stage with Indian percussion

master Trilok Gurtu. Together with Anthony Fiumara,

Marinissen leads the Brabant-based ensemble Lunapark.

Born in Budapest in 1960, Zoltán rácz is primarily famous

as a member of the world renowned Amadinda Percussion

Group, which he founded in 1984 and for which he has been

artistic director to date. As one of the most revered

percussion ensembles in the world, it has given première

performances of works that have now become ‘classics’,

such as Four4 by John Cage, Mallet Quartet by Steve

reich and Sippal, dobbal, nádihegedövel by György Ligeti.

Amadinda was distinguished in 2004 with the Kossúth Prijs,

Hungary’s highest cultural distinction. rácz performs as

soloist and conductor. He has made various recordings,

including Bartók’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion

(Decca) and the percussion concert by Peter Eötvös (Bis).

Pete Lockett is without a doubt one of the world’s most

versatile percussionists. From traditional Carnatic and Hindu

music from India to the Japanese taiko drums, from rock

Leerlingen van het Pleincollege St. Joris in Eindhoven

kiezen tijdens de finale hun eigen favoriet! Vijf leerlingen

vormen samen de jeugdjury voor deze TroMP editie. Zij

volgen de deelnemers vanaf het begin van het concours.

Voor iedere kandidaat schrijven zij een juryrapport,

gebaseerd op hun eigen beoordelingscriteria.

De jeugdjuryleden 2012 zijn: Stefan Fontijn (18), Mandy

Het Pleincollege St. Joris geeft scholieren in het Kunst &

Prominent marimba player. Studio musician. Music

author, festival director and gifted teacher: the American

percussionist Nancy Zeltsman expresses her great love for

percussion in many ways. She has given mater-classes and

performances all over the world. She has performed more

than 125 première pieces. As such she has inspired

various musicians, including Michael Tilson Thomas, Louis

Andriessen and Paul Simon. Zeltsman has also created a

teaching method for marimba. Another of her unique

projects was Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba:

24 new solo concert works.

Students of the Pleincollege St. Joris in Eindhoven will

choose their own favourite during the final! Five students

form the youth jury for this edition of TroMP. They will follow

the candidates’ progress throughout the competition and

write a jury report for each participant, based on their own

assessment criteria.

De Amerikaanse componist Nico Muhly (1981) is nu al een van de meest gevraagde componisten

ter wereld. Premières van zijn orkestwerken werden reeds uitgevoerd door onder andere het

Boston Pops orchestra, de New York Philharmonic en het Chicago Symphony orchestra. Muhly’s

opera Two Boys die juni 2011 in première ging, zal zijn Metropolitan opera-debuut maken in het

seizoen 13/14. Muhly’s schreef ook diverse werken voor film, waaronder Joshua (2007), en voor de

American composer Nico Muhly (1981) is already one of the most popular

composers in the world. Premières of his orchestral pieces have already been

performed by the Boston Pops orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and

the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Muhly has also written various film scores,

Joey Roukens: ‘Ik zet een popachtige ritmische groove neer, een beat’

een tweede compositieopdracht gaf TROMP aan nederlands aanstormend talent:

componist Joey Roukens. hij schreef het verplichte werk voor de pauken dat wordt

uitgevoerd tijdens de halve finales.

rijzende ster Joey roukens (1982) kan worden gedefinieerd als de koploper van de volgende

generatie Nederlandse componisten. In de afgelopen jaren kreeg hij opdrachten van onder meer

het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, Asko|Schönberg, het Storioni Festival en violiste Janine Jansen.

Colin Currie bracht roukens’ Percussie Concerto in mei 2011 in première. Currie riep het werk uit

tot ‘een van de vijf beste concerten ooit geschreven’.

‘Ik maak in mijn eigen werk heel veel gebruik van slagwerk. Vooral in orkestwerken is het een

essentiële kleur. Maar met het slagwerkconcert dat ik voor Colin Currie schreef, drongen de

solistische kwaliteiten van het slagwerk pas echt tot mij door. Je hebt te maken met een hele familie

aan instrumenten en dat is erg rijk om voor te schrijven’, zegt Joey roukens zelf over het werk.

Voor het opdrachtwerk voor het TroMP Concours heeft hij zich juist wat moeten beperken. ‘Het

moest een werk voor pauk solo worden en dat is veel lastiger dan verwacht’, aldus de componist.

‘Pauken werken vooral in de context van het orkest. Als solo-instrument vind ik het vaak wat wollig

worden, vooral als men zich concentreert op de toonhoogte. Ik ken heel veel solowerken voor

pauken die allemaal min of meer hetzelfde klinken. Daar kan ik nooit langer dan vijf à zes minuten

naar luisteren. Daarom ben ik de pauken veel meer als ritme-instrument gaan gebruiken. op

melodisch gebied blijft alles vanwege de beperkte mogelijkheden toch wat primitief. Dus ik zet een

popachtige ritmische groove, een beat, neer die steeds kleine veranderingen, oftewel ‘mutaties’,

ondergaat, vandaar de titel Beat Mutations.

Daarnaast heb ik geprobeerd verschillende kleuren binnen de normale speelwijze naar voren te

brengen door variatie in dynamiek en sfeer. Er is een heel lyrisch gedeelte en ik ben benieuwd hoe

dat uit gaat pakken. Het eindigt uiteindelijk met rauwe beuken op de pauk. Het is een concoursstuk

en de deelnemers moeten kunnen laten horen wat ze in huis hebben. Dat is ook het leuke voor mij:

tien halvefinalisten spelen het werk en ik hoop dat elke keer op een andere manier de

persoonlijkheid van de musicus naar voren komt.’

TROMP commissioned a second composition from the netherlands’

newest talent: composer Joey Roukens. he has written the compulsory

piece for timpani that will be performed during the semi finals.

rising star Joey roukens (1982) can easily be described as the forerunner of the

next generation of Dutch composers. In recent years he has been commissioned

to write pieces by the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, Asko|Schönberg, the

Storioni Festival and violinist Janine Jansen. Colin Currie performed the

première of roukens’ Percussion Concerto in May 2011. Currie heralded the

piece as ‘one of the five best concertos ever written’.

‘I use a great deal of percussion in my own work. Particularly in orchestral

works, it’s an essential tone. But when I was writing the percussion concerto for

Colin Currie, the solo qualities of the percussion instruments really came to life

for me. There’s a whole family of instruments and that is wonderful to write for’,

says Joey roukens about the piece.

For the TroMP composition assignment he had hold back a little. ‘It was to be

a piece for solo timpani, and this proved far more difficult than expected’,

according to the composer. ‘Timpani work primarily in the context of an or-

chestra. As a solo instrument I often find they become rather woolly,

particularly if you concentrate on the pitch. I know a lot of timpani soloists that

all sound pretty much the same. I can’t listen to them for more than five or six

minutes at a time. This is why I decided to use the timpani more as a rhythm

instrument. on a melodic level, the limited possibilities mean that it all remains

relatively primitive. So I set down a poppy rhythmic groove, a beat, that steadily

undergoes slight changes, or ‘mutations’. Hence the title Beat Mutations.

I also tried to incorporate different ‘colours’ within the normal playing style for

variation in the dynamic and ambience. There is a very lyrical section and I’m

very curious how that’s going to work. It ultimately ends with raw beech wood

on the drum. It is a competition piece and the participants must use it to show

us all they have to offer. That’s also great for me: ten semi finalists playing the

piece and I hope that each performance will showcase each personality in a

different way.’

aan om het repertoire in te studeren met deze ervaren slagwerkers.

Jurylid Arnold Marinissen, – ‘noem mij maar de vraagbaak in allerhande TroMP-zaken’ –

was erg te spreken over de voor de deelnemers zeer heilzame masterclassdagen. ‘De

vorige keer zijn we daar op kleine schaal mee begonnen’, aldus de toppercussionist,

‘deze editie hebben we het uitgebreid naar Boston, Shanghai en Amsterdam.’

Het idee achter de repertoire Days is even logisch als simpel: ‘Een musicus moet zich

voorbereiden op een solo. Dat is heel eenzaam werk. Het doel van deze dagen is

spelers die aan het concours willen deelnemen in contact te brengen met andere

mensen die daar mee bezig zijn en ze ondertussen enige coaching te bieden. Het is in

feite een voorbereiding op de definitieve deelname.’

Het achterliggende streven is vooral om de vertolkingskunst op het hoogst mogelijke

niveau te brengen. ‘Die behoefte is er altijd onder deelnemers en op deze manier

voorzien we daarin. Er zijn over de wereld totaal verschillende percussiescholen en het

is ontzettend leuk om daar kennis van te nemen. Iedereen kent alle belangrijke stukken

en als er dan vanuit een docent in Shanghai extra input komt, werkt dat alleen maar

verrijkend. Zowel in Shanghai als in Boston werken docenten die echt een klas om

zich heen verzameld hebben en school maken. Daardoor worden het broeinesten die

héél inspirerend en stimulerend werken. Veel slagwerkers die naar de repertoire Days

kwamen, hebben zich uiteindelijk ook daadwerkelijk ingeschreven voor het TroMP

Concours.’

MasTeRclasses FROM bOsTOn TO shanghai

Preparations for the TROMP competition 2012 began earlier this year with the

Repertoire days, a series of masterclasses given by members of the jury for the

competitors. The talented percussionists enthusiastically seized this opportunity

to practice the repertoire together with these experienced percussionists.

Jury member Arnold Marinissen, – ‘just call me the oracle in all kinds of TroMP things’ –

was very enthusiastic about the masterclasses, which were extremely beneficial for the

participants. ‘We started this initiative on a small-scale during the previous edition’, said the

top-class percussionist, ‘during this edition we have extended the event to include Boston,

Shanghai and Amsterdam.’ The idea behind repertoire Days is as logical as it is simple: “A

musician must always prepare for a solo performance. It can be lonely work. The aim of these

days is to bring performers who want to participate in this competition into contact with

other people like-minded musicians as well as offering coaching. It is actually a preparation

for participation in the contest.’’

The underlying aim is to elevate the quality of the renditions to the highest possible level.

‘There is always this desire among the competitors and this is our way of meeting these

needs. There are all kinds of different percussion schools around the world and it’s a lot of

fun to get to know them better. Everyone is familiar with all the most important pieces and if

a teacher in Shanghai can offer some extra input, it will only enrich the whole process. Both

in Shanghai and in Boston there are teachers that have gathered a class of students around

them to create a school. This creates breeding grounds that have an extremely inspiring and

stimulating effect. Many percussionists that attended the repertoire Days, also participate in

the TroMP Competition.’

Lucie Antunes (1986) begon haar muzikale opleiding op

haar vijftiende aan het conservatorium van Marseille, en

studeerde bij ondere anderen Anders Loguin en Sylvio

Gualda. op 21-jarige leeftijd kreeg zij de Marcel-Bleustein

Blanchet Fondation toegekend. In 2008 was Lucie één

van de vier finalisten tijdens het ArD Concours in

München en in datzelfde jaar werd zij geselecteerd

voor de Cité des Arts in Parijs. In 2010 was Lucie ook al

geselecteerd als één van de deelnemers van TroMP

Percussion Eindhoven.

Lucie Antunes (1986) began her musical education at the age

of fifteen at the Conservatory of Marseille and studied with

Anders Loguin and Sylvio Gualda, among others. Four years

later she was recognised by the Marcel-Bleustein Blanchet

Fondation. In 2008 Lucie was one of the four finalists during

the ArD Competition in Munich and in the same year was

awarded a one-year residence at the Cité des Arts in Paris.

Lucie was also selected as a participant of TroMP

Percussion Eindhoven 2010.

aRThuR bOnzOn FRance

De pas 18-jarige Arthur Bonzon werd geboren in

Bourg-en-Bresse. Hij studeerde in zijn geboortestad en

in St Maur des Fossés en sinds 2011 aan de Haute École

de Musique in Genève. Naast percussie studeerde hij

piano en jazzvibrafoon. In maart 2010 sleepte Arthur de

eerste prijs in de wacht tijdens het Concours de l’orde

des palmes académiques de l’Ain (Frankrijk), en in 2006

behaalde hij op 11-jarige leeftijd de halve finale tijdens

het Concours International de Marimba in Parijs.

Now just 18 years old, Arthur Bonzon was born in Bourg-en-

Bresse. He studied in his hometown and in St Maur des

Fossés and has been a student at the Haute École de

Musique in Geneva since 2011. Alongside percussion, he

also studied piano and jazz vibraphone. In 2006, at just

11 years old, he reached the semi final of the Concours

International de Marimba in Paris. Arthur won first prize at

the Concours de l’orde des palmes académiques de l’Ain

(France) in 2010.

caRlOTa cáceRes beRMeJO sPain

Carlota Cáceres Bermejo (1988) studeerde cum laude

af aan het Conservatorio Superior de les Illes Balears in

Palma de Mallorca. Momenteel voltooit zij haar opleiding

in Basel bij Christian Diersten. Carlota speelt in onder

meer het orquesta Juvenil Iberoamericana en

remplaceerde bij het Freiburger Barockorchester. Met

ensemble Neopercusión legt zij zich toe op kamermuziek

en met het S’ensemble op hedendaagse muziek. Carlota

nam deel aan tal van masterclasses.

Carlota Cáceres Bermejo (1988) graduated with honours

from the Conservatorio Superior de les Illes Balears in Palma

de Mallorca. She is currently completing her studies in

Basel with Christian Diersten. Carlota has performed in the

orquesta Juvenil Iberoamericana (conducted by Gustavo

Dudamel) and with the Freiburger Barockorchester. She has

collaborated with the chamber music ensemble Neopercusión

and plays contemporary music with S’ensemble. Carlota has

also participated in numerous masterclasses.

Paul changaRnieR FRance

Paul Changarnier (1987) studeert sinds 2009 aan het

Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique te Lyon in

de klas van Jean Geoffroy en Henri-Charles Caget. Paul

was prijswinnaar tijdens de International Percussion

Competition te Cannes in december 2010. In datzelfde

jaar richtte hij het Sr9 trio op, een percussietrio dat de

International Percussion Competition Luxemburg 2012

won. Sinds mei 2011 is Paul lid van TaCTuS Ensemble.

Paul Changarnier (1987) has been studying at the

Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon since

2009, under Jean Geoffroy and Henri-Charles Caget. Paul

was a prize-winner at the International Cannes Percussion

Competition in December 2010 and in the same year he

founded the Sr9 trio, a percussion trio with which he won

the International Percussion Competition Luxemburg 2012.

Paul has been a member of TaCTuS Ensemble since May

2011.

Ting hsun chiu Taiwan

Ting Hsun Chiu (1990) studeerde in Taiwan slagwerk

en piano. Zij behaalde de eerste prijs tijdens de Taiwan

Music Competition, afdeling percussie. Zij vervolgde haar

studie aan het conservatorium van Tours, Frankrijk, bij

Jean-Baptiste Couturier - waar ze in 2009 unaniem de Prix

de perfectionnement kreeg uitgereikt - en aan de Haute

École de Musique in Genéve. Tijdens het festival

Aujourd’hui Musique in Perpignan viel zij op met haar

vertolking van onder andere Ionisation van Edgar Varèse.

Born in 1990, Ting Hsun Chiu studied percussion and piano

in Taiwan. She won first prize in the percussion section of

the Taiwan Music Competition. She then continued her

studies at the conservatory of Tours in France with Jean-

Baptiste Couturier, where she unanimously won the Prix

de perfectionnement in 2009, and at the Haute École de

Musique in Geneva. During the festival Aujourd’hui Musique

in Perpignan she stood out with her rendition of Ionisation

by Edgar Varèse, among others.

ben duinkeR canada

Ben Duinker (1983) is afkomstig uit Montreal en is zowel

solopercussionist als kamermusicus. In 2009 won hij de

eerste prijs in de oSM-Standard Life Competition. Hij trad

als solist op in Canada, VS, Duitsland en Zwitserland met

originally from Montreal, Ben Duinker (1983) is both solo

percussionist and chamber musician. In 2009 he won first prize

at the oSM Standard Life Competition. He has performed as

a soloist in Canada, the USA, Germany and Switzerland and

with orchestras like L’orchestre Francophonie Canadienne, the

McGill Symphony orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia. Ben

performs as marimba duo together with Greg Samek, and they

Alexandre Esperet (1987) werd unaniem aangenomen

aan het conservatorium van Lyon onder de hoede van

Alexandre Esperet (1987) was being unanimously accepted

yukinObu ishikawa JaPan

Yukinobu Ishikawa is geboren in Yokohama (1982). Vóór

hij zich op percussie toelegde, studeerde hij viool en nog

tijdens zijn percussiestudie bekwaamde hij zich op de

piano. ook als percussionist is hij veelzijdig: pauken,

marimba, drums maar ook dejmbé, cajon en jazzvibra-

foon. Zijn leraren waren onder anderen Peter Prommel en

Isao Nakamura. Yukinobu Ishikawa behaalde tevens de

Bachelor of Arts-graad in psychologie aan de Meiji Gakuin

Universiteit in Tokyo.

Yukinobu Ishikawa was born in 1982 in Yokohama, Japan.

Before choosing to focus on percussion he studied the violin

and during his percussion studies he also practised the

piano. As a percussionist he is a versatile musician: timpani,

marimba, drums, dejmbé, cajon and jazz vibraphone. His

teachers include Peter Prommel and Isao Nakamura.

Yukinobu has also achieved a Bachelor of Arts in psychology

from Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo.

MaikO hOsOda JaPan

De Japanse percussionist Maiko Hosoda (1985) studeert

in New York aan de Mannes College New School for

Music. Zij won reeds meerdere prijzen: de Excellent

Performance Award van de Japan Classical Music Society

en eerste prijzen van de Miyanichi Shinbun Company en

tijdens de Mannes Concerto Competition. Hosoda trad

solistisch op, bijvoorbeeld met het Water Concerto van

Tan Dun. In november 2010 gaf zij het Amnesty

International Benefit Concert.

Japanese percussionist Maiko Hosoda (1985) is currently

studying at the Mannes College New School for Music in

New York. She has already won many prizes, including the

Excellent Performance Award from the Japan Classical Music

Society and first prizes from the Miyanichi Shinbun Company

and at the Mannes Concerto Competition. Hosoda has

appeared as a soloist with the Water Concerto by Tan Dun.

In November 2010 she performed the Amnesty International

Benefit Concert.

MeRvyn gROOT The neTheRlands

Mervyn Groot (1989) begon op 8-jarige leeftijd met

slagwerklessen aan de muziekschool in Terneuzen.

Hij studeerde sinds zijn vijftiende aan het Fontys

conservatorium en momenteel aan het conservatorium

van Amsterdam bij onder anderen Arnold Marinissen en

Peter Prommel. Mervyn werkte mee aan projecten van het

Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, het orkest van de 18e Eeuw,

Asko|Schönberg en de radio Kamer Filharmonie. Hij is lid

van de Ligeti Academy van het Asko|Schönberg.

Mervyn Groot (1989) first encountered percussion aged eight at

the music school in Terneuzen. At the age of fifteen he began

studying at the Fontys Conservatory and is currently studying

at the Conservatory of Amsterdam under Arnold Marinissen

and Peter Prommel. Mervyn has participated in projects with

Emil Kuyumcuyan werd in 1993 geboren in Istanbul. Hij

studeerde in zijn geboorteplaats aan het conservatorium

van de Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University bij Mehmet

Sökman. Sinds 2010 studeert hij aan het Conservatorium

van Stuttgart bij onder anderen Marta Klimasara, Klaus

Emil Kuyumcuyan (1993) was born in Istanbul. He studied in his

birthplace at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University with Mehmet

Sökman. In 2010 he began studies at the State Academy for

Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Marta Klimasara,

Klaus Dreher, Harald Löhle and Jürgen Spitschka. With his fellow

classmates Se Mi Hwang and Jessica Porter, he formed the

TalkingDrums Trio. This percussion trio was awarded third prize

at the 2012 International Percussion Competition Luxembourg.

Emil also works regularly with various Turkish composers and

has performed several pieces in première.

zhe lin china

Geboren in 1989 in Qingdao, China ontving Zhe Lin op

haar dertiende een beurs om te kunnen studeren aan

het Beijing Central Conservatory bij Prof. Zhao. Sinds 2007

studeerde zij aan de Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart.

Zij verwierf internationale bekendheid in 2008, toen ze

tweede werd tijdens de vijfde World Marimba Competition

in Stuttgart. In 2010 nam Zhe Lin ook al deel aan TroMP

Percussion Eindhoven. Eerste prijzen won ze bij de

International Marimba Competition China 2010 en de

59ste Deutschen Musikhochschulen Wettbewerb 2011.

Born in 1989 in Qingdao, Zhe Lin received a scholarship at

the age of just thirteen to study at the Beijing Central

Conservatory of Music with Prof. Zhao. In 2007 she started

studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart. She gained

international recognition in 2008 when she was awarded

second prize at the 5th World Marimba Competition in

Stuttgart. She was a participant in TroMP Percussion

Eindhoven 2010 and was awarded first prize at both the 2nd

International Marimba Competition of China in 2010 and the

59th German Conservatory Competition in 2011.

De Canadese Krystina Marcoux (1989) specialiseert zich in

nieuw werk voor percussie, zowel solo als kamermuziek.

Zij is actief lid van het BAM Percussion ensemble waar-

mee zij regelmatig op tournee gaat. Daarnaast speelt zij in

het orchestre Symphonique de Gatineau. Krystina ontving

de Friends of the National Arts Centre of Canada scholar-

ship 2008 en de Bourse du Millénaire en de Médaille du

Lieutenant-Gouverneur du Québec. Zij studeerde aan het

conservatorium van Québec en tegenwoordig aan McGill

University bij Fabrice Marandola en Aiyun Huang.

Canadian Krystina Marcoux (1989) specializes in new works

for percussion, both as a soloist and chamber musician.

Krystina is an active member of the BAM Percussion

ensemble with which she tours extensively. She also

performs in the orchestre Symphonique de Gatineau.

Krystina was honoured with the Friends of the National Arts

Centre of Canada scholarship 2008 and she received the

Bourse du Millénaire and the Médaille du Lieutenant-

Gouverneur du Québec. She has studied at the conservatory

of Québec and is currently studying at McGill University

under Fabrice Marandola and Aiyun Huang.

Garret Mendelow (1989) studeert aan de University of

Michigan. In 2009 won hij de tweede prijs op de PASIC

International Multiple Percussion Competition en werd hij

gekozen als winnaar van de Yamaha Young Performing

Artists Competition in de categorie percussie. In 2010 was

Garret een van de geselecteerde kandidaten van TroMP

Percussion Eindhoven. In 2011 won hij de PAS Armand

Garret Mendelow (1989) is a student at the University

of Michigan. In 2009 he won second prize at the PASIC

as a participant of TroMP Percussion Eindhoven 2010 and

he won the PAS Armand Zildjian Scholarship in 2011. He

is strongly committed to increasing public awareness and

knowledge of percussion music.

shinichi MinaMi JaPan

Shinichi Minami (1984), afkomstig uit Ishikawa, Japan

studeert aan de Hochschule für Musik te Karlsruhe bij

Isao Nakamura. 2011 was een zeer succesvol jaar voor

Shinichi: in januari won hij de eerste prijs en de rainer

Koch Memorial Prijs tijdens het concours van het Cultuur-

fonds Baden, in mei sleepte hij de tweede prijs van het

59ste concours van de Duitse conservatoria in de wacht,

en in september ontving hij de Karlsruher Prijs (voor

studenten aan de hogescholen van deze stad). In 2009

schreef Shinichi een scriptie over Xenakis: ‘Musical Idea

and Generating Processes of Iannis Xenakis.’

Shinichi Minami (1984), originally from Ishikawa, Japan, is a

student at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in the soloist

class with Isao Nakamura. Last year was a very successful

year for Shinichi: in January he won the first prize and the

rainer Koch Memorial Prize at the Cultural Foundation

Baden competition, in May he was awarded second prize

at the 59th competition of German Universities of Music,

and in September he won the Karlsruher Prize for students

of Karlsruher universities. In 2009 Shinichi wrote his thesis

about Xenakis: ‘Musical Idea and Generating Processes of

Masayuki niinO JaPan

De in 1989 geboren Masayuki Niino studeerde voor zijn

bachelor examen percussie aan het Kunitachi College of

Music in Japan. Hij voltooide deze studie met de hoogste

2010 nam hij succesvol deel aan de 7th PAS International

Percussion Competition in Italië, waar hij de Grand Prix

Born in 1989, Masayuki Niino completed his Bachelor of

music studies at Kunitachi College of Music in Japan, where

he graduated with the highest score in the percussion

department and was awarded the Yatabe Prize for best

performance. In 2010 he successfully participated in the 7th

PAS International Percussion Competition in Italy, where he

won the Grand Prix on snare drum. He is currently teaching

at the Tokyo Music Academy.

RObeRT OeTOMO ausTRalia

robert oetomo (1988) maakt een dubbele carrière: als

percussionist en componist. Momenteel studeert hij voor

zijn master percussie aan het conservatorium in

Mannheim. Hij won al vele prijzen, zoals de eerste prijs

zowel in de categorieën open Marimba als open

Vibraphone tijdens Australian Percussion Eisteddfod

2010. robert schreef veel voor slagwerk. Zijn eerste

orkestwerk Spirit of the Dreaming met didgeredoo solo,

ging in première tijdens het Aurora Music Festival in

Sydney 2008.

robert oetomo (1988) has a double career: as a percussionist

and as a composer. He is currently studying for his master’s

in percussion at the Mannheim Conservatory of Music.

robert has won many prizes, including first prize in both the

open Marimba and open Vibraphone categories of the 2010

Australian Percussion Eisteddfod. As a composer, robert has

created numerous works for percussion, performed in many

countries. His first symphonic work, Spirit of the Dreaming

with solo didgeridoo, premiered at the 2008 Aurora Music

Festival in Sydney. yuka OhTa JaPan

Yuka ohta (1986) begon haar opleiding in 2001 aan

Shuji ono, geboren 1982, begon zijn opleiding aan de

Senzoku Gakuen of Music in Kanagawa, Japan. Hier

behaalde hij in 2006 cum laude zijn diploma. In juni 2010

Shuji ono, born 1982, began his education at Senzoku

Gakuen of Music in Kanagawa, Japan where he graduated

with honours in 2006. He completed his soloist master

program at the royal College of Music Stockholm in June

2010 and since then he has been studying there for his

soloist diploma. Shuji was awarded fourth prize at the 2004

Japan Classic Music Competition and in 2009, 2010 and 2011

he won the royal Music Academy Scholarship Competition.

ono was a participant of TroMP Percussion Eindhoven in

2010. He now performs as a soloist and has toured as a

member of the marimba quartet Quartetra.

JOãO caRlOs duaRTe PachecO PORTugal

João Carlos Duarte Pacheco (1988) volgt de master

opleiding in Lissabon bij Pedro Carneiro, nadat hij in 2010

João Carlos Duarte Pacheco (1988) is currently following a

master’s degree in Lissabon with Pedro Carneiro, having

graduated in 2010 from the conservatory in Porto. João

has twice been awarded the first prize (Superior Level) at

the Iberian Tum-pa-tum-pa competition (2007 and 2010). In

September 2007 he won second prize during the 21st Edition

of the Prémio Jovens Musicos (Portuguese radio and televi-

sion). João performs as percussionist with the Leipzig oktett

and Marimbeats Percussion Duo and as principal timpani

percussionist with the Portuguese Chamber orchestra.

alex PeTcu iReland

Alex Petcu (1986), een Ier van roemeense origine, begon

op 5-jarige leeftijd met slagwerk aan de muziekschool

van Cork. Na zijn studie aan het conservatorium van

Nantes, Frankrijk, werkt hij momenteel voor zijn Master

of Arts in Cork. Als solist gaf Alex onder meer recitals in

het West Cork Chamber Music Festival en werkte met

het Irish Composers Collective. ook als orkestmusicus

maakte Alex zich zeer verdienstelijk: hij trad op tijdens de

Lucerne Festival Academy en werd gecoached door het

An Irishman of rumanian origin, Alex Petcu (1986) began his

studies in percussion at the music school of Cork at the

age of five. Having graduated from the Nantes conservatory

in France, he is currently studying for his Master of Arts in

Cork. As a soloist Alex has performed in recitals during the

West Cork Chamber Music Festival and has worked with the

Irish Composers Collective. As an orchestral musician, Alex

performed during the Lucerne Festival Academy and was

coached by the Ensemble Intercontemporain. He reached

the semi finals during the 2010 edition of TroMP.

Simone rubino (1993) studeerde aan het Giuseppe Verdi

conservatorium bij riccardo Balbinutti. Hij soleerde bij het

orkest van de rAI in Turijn en trad in 2008, 17 jaar oud, op

met Peter Sadlo in het rAI Auditorium. Simone speelt in

het percussiekwartet out of Time, dat samenwerkte met

de violist Salvatore Accardo en een cd opnam voor het

label Naïve. Bij de vorige editie van TroMP ontving

Simone de Annelie Aanmoedigingsprijs en de MCN

Willem Vos Prijs voor de beste uitvoering van een

compositie van een Nederlandse componist.

Simone rubino was born 1993 in Chivasso near Turin, and

studied at the Giuseppe Verdi conservatory with riccardo

Balbinutti. He was a soloist with the orchestra of the rAI

in Turin and in 2008, at the age of 17, he performed with

percussionist Peter Sadlo in the rAI Auditorium. Simone is a

member of percussion quartet out of Time, which appeared

with violinist Salvatore Accardo and recorded a CD for the

label Naïve. He was also awarded the Annelie Encourage-

ment Prize and the MCN Willem Vos Prijs during the previous

edition of TroMP.

anTOninO secchia iTaly

Al op zijn twaalfde begon Antonino Secchia (1988) zijn

studie aan het conservatorium van Trapani, Sicilië.

Met behulp van de laptop ontwikkelde Antonino een

nieuwe wijze van musiceren en notatie. Hij treeedt op

als improviserend musicus, speelde bij festivals als Suona

Francese, Live Ixem 08, Acoustic Fields (Graz), Garnison

7 Studio (Wenen). Antonino is lid van AMP2 Ensembles

en van het Institute for the Very, Very Nervous. Aan het

conservatorium in Weimar bereidt hij zich momenteel

voor op zijn Konzertexamen.

Antonino Secchia (1988) began his studies in percussion

aged twelve at the Trapani conservatory in Sicily. Using a

laptop, Antonino developed a new way of writing music and

notes. He now performs as an improvisational musician and

has played at festivals like Suona Francese, Live Ixem 08,

Acoustic Fields (Graz) and Garnison 7 Studio (Vienna). He

is a member of AMP2 Ensembles and the Institute for the

Very, Very Nervous. Antonino is currently preparing for his

Konzertexamen, the highest qualification for soloists, at the

Weimar conservatory. JeFF sTeRn uniTed sTaTes

Jeff Stern (1989) behaalde dit jaar zijn Bachelor of Music

diploma aan de University of Massachusetts. Hij trad

reeds veel solistisch en in kamermuziekverband op, zoals

This year Jeff Stern (1989) got his Bachelor of Music at the

University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has appeared

soloistic and in chamber music; to mention only last year,

he played at Yellow Barn Artist residency, The Boston New

Music Initiative and McCormick Marimba Festival in Tampa,

Florida. New York Magazine put him in their Top Ten Classical

Performers of 2011 with his release of J.L. Adams’ Inuksuit.

With his UMass Marimba Band Jeff won the DownBeat

Award for Best Jazz Combo.

Sabrina Suk Wai Ma, (1985, Hong Kong) mag zich al

de prijswinnares noemen van grote internationale

concoursen; zo won zij de International Competition for

Contemporary Music, Polen (2010), de Classical Marimba

League Solo Artist Competition, VS (2010) en de Inter-

national Performers’ Competition for Marimba, Tsjechië

(2009). In 2011 was zij halvefinalist bij de Concert Artists

Guild Competition in New York. Sabrina behaalde haar

Bachelor of Music diploma aan de Universiteit van

Michigan met de hoogste onderscheiding en studeert

momenteel voor haar Master of Music in Karlsruhe.

Sabrina Suk Wai Ma, a native of Hong Kong, was born in

England in 1985 and now lives there again. She has won

prizes at several international competitions, including first

prize at the International Competition for Contemporary Music

in Poland (2010), the Classical Marimba League Solo Artist

Competition in the US (2010) and the International Performers’

Competition for Marimba in the Czech republic (2009). In 2011

she was semi-finalist at the Concert Artists Guild Competition

in New York. Sabrina completed her Bachelor of Music degree

at the University of Michigan with highest distinction and is

currently studying for her Master of Music in Karlsruhe.

deRek TywOniuk canada/uniTed sTaTes

Derek Tywoniuk (1988) ontving zijn opleiding aan het

Cleveland Institute of Music en bij Jack van Geem aan de

Colburn School, Conservatory of Music. In 2010 ontving

hij de Bruce Collie Award. Derek remplaceerde in onder

meer het Cleveland orchestra en was paukenist/

Derek Tywoniuk (1988) was educated at the Cleveland Institute

of Music (Bachelor of Music 2010) and with Jack van Geem

at Colburn School, Conservatory of Music. In 2010 he was

awarded the Bruce Collie Award. Derek has appeared with

the Cleveland orchestra and last summer performed as

percussionist with the Lucerne Festival Academy orchestra,

directed by Pierre Boulez. Tywoniuk’s composition For Dean

Primmer, which won the ZMF New Music for Marimba

Composition Contest, was published by C.F.Peters.

galdRic subiRana FRance

op zijn vierde begon Galdric Subirana, geboren in 1989,

zijn slagwerkstudie aan het conservatorium van Perpignan;

acht jaar oud kwam hij in de klas van Philippe Spiesser.

Al jong won hij prijzen, zoals op zijn elfde de tweede prijs

van de National Xylophone Competition in Lempdes, drie

jaar later de derde prijs tijdens de International Marimba

Galdric Subirana (1989) began studying percussion at the

Perpignan conservatory at the age of four. At eight years old

he joined the class of Philippe Spiesser. He started winning

prizes at a very young age; second prize at the National

Xylophone Competition in Lempdes aged just 11, third in the

International Marimba Competition in Paris three years later

and the Claude Giot International Vibraphone Competition

in Clermont-Ferrand at the age of 19. He was one of the

participants of TroMP 2010 and is currently studying for his

master’s degree in Lyon.

De 19-jarige Steven White speelde in diverse ensembles

en orkesten, zoals het Nortwestern University Symphony

orchestra en het Northwestern University Percussion

Ensemble. Steven sleepte verscheidene prijzen in de

wacht, zoals de TCWSH Instrumental Department

outstanding Student Award 2010 en was in 2009 Honored

The 19 year-old Steven White has performed with various

ensembles and orchestras, such as the Nortwestern

University Symphony orchestra and the Northwestern

University Percussion Ensemble. Steven has won many

prizes, including the TCWSH Instrumental Department

outstanding Student Award 2010 and was Honoured Soloist

at the Michigan Music Conference in 2009. He achieved

extremely high scores for the Michigan State Solo and

Ensemble Festival ratings (98/100 points) in 2008 and 2010.

De Chinese Long Ye (1989) woont in Boston, Amerika.

In zijn geboorteland studeerde hij aan het Central

Conservatory in Beijing bij Gang Liu en aan het Sichuan

Conservatory in Chengdu, Sichuan bij Yanhjong Bai.

Vervolgens specialiseerde hij zich verder in Amerika:

Idyllwild Arts Academy, Los Angeles en aan het Boston

Conservatory (Bachelor of Music). Momenteel studeert

Long Ye bij Nancy Zeltsman en Keith Aleo. Hij speelde in

het Shenzhen Symphony orchestra (met Tan Dun) en aan

De in Duitsland woonachtige Taiwanese percussioniste

Yu-Ching Wei (1982) studeerde in haar geboorteland aan

de nationale Chia-Yi universiteit in Chiayi. In New York

studeerde zij vervolgens aan Buffalo University en Stony

Brook University. Yu-Ching Wei is veelzijdig: zij treedt

veelvuldig op, doceert aan de University of Buffalo en

de Hochschule für Musik Detmold, zij geeft lezingen en

houdt zich bezig met muziektherapie.

Now living in Germany, Taiwanese percussionist Yu-Ching Wei

(1982) studied in her homeland at the national Chia-Yi University

in Chiayi (Bachelor of Fine Arts). She then continued her studies

at Buffalo University and Stony Brook University in New York

(Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance). Yu-Ching Wei

is a versatile musician. She regularly performs live, teaches at the

University of Buffalo and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, gives

lectures (‘Evolution of Percussion World’, ‘Different Perspectives

of Percussion Music’ at Chia-Yi University) and has an interest in

music therapy.

samenwerkingsproject tussen TROMP Percussion eindhoven en glOw

Festival. Rapper Fresku maakt speciaal voor deze gelegenheid een

Lucas Maassen studeerde in 2002 af aan de Design Academy Eindhoven en

won sindsdien vele prijzen. Zijn werk stond centraal in exposities en musea over

de hele wereld. rapper Fresku won met zijn eerste singel Twijfel (2009) direct de

State Awards 2009 en de Lijn5 Award. Nog geen jaar later stond hij op Lowlands

en eindigde hij als tweede bij de 3voor12 Awards voor beste album.

Componeren voor percussie is – wat je noemt – een vak apart. Jonge componisten die

studeren aan Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, Conservatorium van Amsterdam

en Codarts rotterdam gaan de uitdaging aan en schrijven nieuw werk voor percussie.

Alle inzendingen worden tijdens TroMP uitgevoerd door medestudenten. Wat je noemt

ultiem aanwezig zijn aan het front van de nieuwe muziek.

De winnaar ontvangt een geldprijs, een compositieopdracht van November Music en

een uitgave van zijn werk door Donemus.

Composing for percussion can be described as a unique art form. Young composers studying

at Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Codarts

rotterdam take on the challenge of writing a brand new piece for percussion. All entries will

be performed by fellow students during TroMP. You could call it the ultimate in being at the

forefront of new music.

beats & barrels Talentenklas

Samen het ritme voelen, slaan, rauw en ongelikt zelf

muziek maken en ervaren! Met dit educatieve project

voor het voorgezet onderwijs leren leerlingen hoe het

voelt zelf muziek te maken. Slagwerk is hier vanwege zijn

laagdrempeligheid uitermate geschikt voor. Samen met

slagwerk aan de slag verbindt en bewijst dat zelf muziek

maken een uitlaatklep kan zijn. Voor de realisatie wordt

samengewerkt met Slagwerkgroep Circle Percussion. Het

project bestaat uit diverse hypermoderne leertrajecten en

een grootschalig slotconcert.

TROMP beaTs allbeats & barrels Talent class

Beat the rhythm, feel the rhythm, make and experience raw

and unpolished music together! With this educational project

for primary school students, the children learn what it really

feels like to make music. The accessibility of percussion

makes it the perfect medium for this. Coming together to

learn about percussion connects those involved and proves

that making music can be a truly expressive outlet. This

project is realized together with percussion group Circle

Percussion. It consists of various hyper-modern educational

programs and a large-scale closing concert.

FesTa dO saMba

Festa do Samba is in 1999 ontstaan als het 25-jarig

verjaardagsfeestje van os Malandros uit Eindhoven. Een

festival, georganiseerd door os Malandros, in de binnen-

stad van Eindhoven. Belangrijkste doelen zijn: Elkaar

ontmoeten, samen spelen, naar elkaar luisteren en

van elkaar leren. Vanaf 2012 wordt het Festa do Samba

in samenwerking met TroMP Percussion Eindhoven

gerealiseerd.

FesTa dO saMbaFesta do Samba began in 1999 as the 25th birthday

party of Eindhoven-based os Malandros. A festival organised

by os Malandros in Eindhoven’s city centre. It’s most

important objectives are: To meet, play together, listen to

each other and learn from each other. From 2012, the Festa

do Samba is realized in collaboration with TroMP Percussion

Eindhoven.

Een muzikaal feest voor kinderen, leerkrachten én

bezoekers. Het Zeer Groot Tromp Zelfgemaakt

Schoolplein orkest (GZSo) is een project voor alle

groepen binnen het basisonderwijs. Het project wordt

op school uitgevoerd, waarbij op ongebruikelijke

instrumenten muziek wordt gemaakt. Tenslotte komt

iedereen bij elkaar in een ‘schoolpleinconcert’ voor

ouders, buren en bekenden. Er wordt op van alles

muziek gemaakt: cementkuipen, gestemde steiger-

pijpen, gestemde bierflessen, shakers, klapkokers en

klankplanken worden door de workshopleiders

meegebracht. Daarnaast wordt er gezongen, gerapt,

geklapt en gestampt.

schOOlyaRd ORchesTRaA musical celebration for students, teachers and visitors.

The Huge Tromp Homemade Schoolyard orchestra (GZSo in

Dutch) is a project aimed at all groups of primary education.

The project, which will take place at school, will see children

creating music using unusual instruments. In conclusion,

all the students come together in a ‘schoolyard concert’ to

perform for parents, neighbours and friends. They’ll make

music on all kinds of things. The workshop teachers will

provide cement tubs, tuned scaffolding pipes, tuned beer

bottles, shakers, tubes and boards. These will be combined

with singing, rapping, clapping and stamping.

TROMPbOT

Leerlingen van de ‘technasium afdeling’ van het

Dr. Knippenberg College uit Helmond gaan een

uitdagende opdracht aan: ‘Bouw een drumrobot, maak

een percussie-instrument, componeer een ritme voor

meerdere percussie-instrumenten en programmeer

een performance met samenspel’. Tijdens de grote

slotuitvoering van TroMP Beats All zijn alle creaties te

bewonderen in een heus robotorkest!

TROMPbOTStudents of the ‘technasium’ department of the Dr.

Knippenberg College in Helmond have accepted an

impressive challenge: Construct a drum robot, make a

percussion instrument, compose a rhythm for multiple

percussion instruments and programme a combined

performance together. You can admire all the resulting

creations in a true robot orchestra during the grand closing

performance of TroMP Beats All!

TeaM daRe

Het Team DArE van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

presenteert in een tent op de Markt een grote door

robots aangestuurde slagwerkinstallatie. In de grote

slotuitvoering van TroMP Beats All wordt deze inter-

actief ingezet. De installatie zal ook tijdens het TroMP

festival blijven staan met presentaties op gezette tijden.

TeaM daReTeam DArE from the Technical University Eindhoven

presents a large robot-controlled percussion installation in

a tent on the Market square. The robot-group will play an

interactive role in the grand final performance of TroMP

Beats All. The installation can also be seen during the TroMP

festival, with regular presentations.
